2007 Non-Trad Applicants' Progress Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Could you tell us what they asked that got you all flustered and which school?

Well, after you get the first bad one out of the way, everything else should seem easier.

Got my first rejection today. The good news is that it was at what I considered to be the absolutely crappiest school I've ever been to. Horrible facilities located in an expensive town in a terrible neighborhood. I also had a terrible interview.

thanks MVDM! i definitely think you will have some interviews coming in soon. 🙂

congrats Y! mayo is an awesome school. good luck on the interview!

Thanks scentiment & MVDM! What a week this has been - I got an interview invite from SLU today.

Just a heads up they interview only on Tuesdays. It's crunch time at work so I'm not sure how to deal with this. SLU is rolling right?

On other news, I hit elite frequent flyer status with my air carrier. Complimentary first class upgrades here I come! Though in my low tier, I still need to rack up a ton more miles before I have a better chance for the upgrade, but atleast I'm in the running even though the upgrade list at my tier is a mile long

wow, first class upgrades rock! 🙂 i'm so far away from having enough miles to qualify for that.

So looks like my boss isn't going to let me take Tuesday off so I can go interview @ St. Louis Univ and thats the only day they interview. What's worse is they are rolling admissions. It's crunch time at work so it's going to be awfully hard to take off during the middle of the week - so says "the man." I could quit my job for the interview but that seems like a drastic step. On the other hand, I really don't want to re-apply next year. I've gotten quite a few interviews but no acceptances yet and the word on the street is to keep interviewing till you get an acceptance. So this puts me in quite a pickle. What to do???

<<So this puts me in quite a pickle. What to do???>>

Call in sick and go to interview. You are going to quit anyway and your future is more important. Boss can't fire you if you call in sick.

I hate to say it, but you never should have asked your boss in the first place. You should have told him 2-3 weeks in advance, I need this date: xx/xx/xxxx off for family/personal business. If you're suspiciously sick on a Tuesday, it'll look bad on your part.

Actually that's exactly what I did. I told him I need xx/xx/xxxx off 4 weeks in advance for family/personal reasons. Since I'm already taking all Fridays off till Nov (for the other interviews) he's not willing to give up yet another day. The flip side is I have to make up atleast 40 hours during the days I'm there. So that makes for some really long days.

As a consultant, you're really supposed to be at the client - no sick time per se. Well let me clarify that you can get sick and take time off during the weekend 🙂

Interview scheduling with a full time job sucketh bigeth timeth!

wish i had that problem

Nothing but extremely difficult ethical questions and why I wanted to change careers. They came at me like they did not want me there. Another applicant had the same interviewers and pretty much said the same thing about her interview. Hopefully she was better prepared than I.

Since I slammed the school I prefer not to say which school it was.

So - I am an EDP applicant. The notification deadline was today. Do I know if they accepted me or deferred me to the regular applicant pool? Ummm, NO! 😡

Hi there...

I just found this thread. Had been wondering where all the people like me were hiding out, and here you all are!!!

I'm 35, married w/ one child, and am applying this year. I was slow getting my applications in, but am more or less done (except for non-rolling Columbia and NYU).

I'm a little bummed today, since I just got my first rejection notice from Georgetown, and we live in DC and are hoping not to move. I don't know what I said that they didn't like - I have a 37 MCAT and 3.95 Post-bacc GPA (although my undergrad ave. was much lower - around 3.2) and two years of volunteer experience. They didn't even bother to interview me. 🙁

Are any of you following up with schools that rejected you to find out what their issue was?

🙁 Sad day for me, but sounds like a good day for some others! 🙂

Later,
Christine

I've hit a rut...I have 6 or 7 secondaries to fill out...and have had them for about 2 weeks now. Some are pretty much complete, but I've hit a rut recently...slight burnout from no breaks in a long time.

I've got an Org. II test tomorrow, and I fear the worst...Been studying, but very burned out and tired.

I plan to fill out the secondaries and have them to the schools by the time MCAT scores come out, however.

Got an email from DMU letting me know that I've been accepted!

Congrats! This thread is bursting with good news this week 🙂 👍

And I have a milder dose of it myself: all my transcripts were finally received by AACOMAS (only took a month...) and I didn't get the "correspondance" from Pitt that we're theorizing is a Hold. I sent them an update letter a couple weeks ago and I'm hoping it somehow saved my skin for the time being. Keep hope alive...

sweet, congrats!! 😀

MVDM, i hope you hear something (good) from Pitt soon! I think it will definitely help that you sent them an update letter. :luck:

I just spent some time playing catch up on the boards. I've been a little out of touch the last few weeks between the baby, school, and interview travel. I'm so happy to see those acceptances are rolling in already!!! Congrats to Y and Ox!!! 😍 😍

Here's to those of us who are still waiting... :luck: :luck:

As an update: I have one interview left - my big reach school - but I'm happy with the ones that have gone so far and I think I'll be happy anywhere I'm accepted. Quite frankly - med school has always been such a huge dream for me that I'm almost pinching myself these days as it is...... an acceptance might send me over the edge! 😀

Congratulations Y!!!

I got more good news a few days ago that I forgot to post here too. The medical school where I was accepted awarded me a full tuition scholarship for the first year. I never in my wildest dreams expected that to happen.

That's going to help out a lot. I'll still have to take out a loan the first year to pay for childcare, but tuition was really a huge chunk of what I was planning to borrow.

YEAH YEAH YEAH!!! That is SO great!! CONGRATS!!!

congrats on the acceptances guys. I've had a couple of interviews but no news otherwise.

Congrats to the acceptances!

Still waiting for the MCAT results; Friday can't come soon enough...

If Pitt asks us to have an Ultimate Fighting style fight to the death in order to decide which one of us they'll let in, you should know I will give it my all. And if you win, my sons will come seeking revenge one day.

And yet, a fight to the death is less intimidating than the thought of waiting for MCAT scores again. Good luck with the waaaaaaaait!:luck:

yo, dude you 2007 applicants have it set!

Got all my secondaries in except KU, OSU-COM, and AZ-COM...KU is waiting on MCAT, and OSU apparently is too...haven't heard a thing from them. I'm waiting on MCAT before I spend the money on the AZ secondary.

Good luck to all, and congrats to all those with good news!

Just missed an A on my first Org. II test last week, so a little disappointed, but not too much, considering I've had no time to study lately.

Thanks!

Now that I have a score, I was finally able to hop on the MD Applicant bandwagon.

EDIT: That's weird - I apparently have a quantum signature: sometimes it's there, sometimes it's not. Hmm...

EDIT 2: Bandwagon

Thanks!

the old deal was that they only showed up once per page. but i'm not sure what's going on now. weird! 😛

I'm a non-trad and have been following this thread for a while, just have only posted on it a few times.

Got my MCAT results last night: 32Q (PS11/VR11/BS10). Exact same as Quix, I just can't bust out as good an essay!

This makes me officially complete at all the schools that I have applied to (15MD, 4 DO). Hopefully I'll start getting interview invites in the near future. I really want to get the ball rolling and find out where I am (and am not) going to be next year.

Thanks, guys. I really do appreciate it. I was hoping for a 30 (there was something karmic about getting a 30, considering the scores were coming out the week of my 30th b-day), so the extra points and the essay score had me dancing in the shower. 😀

Quix, when is your B-day? Mine is tommorrow (turning 29).

Quix, when is your B-day? Mine is tommorrow (turning 29).

It was Monday (Oct. 9); but that sucked for everybody, so I decided to turn 30 tomorrow (I rented out two tables at a local pool hall/restaurant and invited family and friends. Now that I have my score, the ETOH will be celebratory instead of mournful.

Sounds fun in a Roadhouse kind of way. I haven't played pool in years.

Happy 30th!

Congrats to everyone on their great scores! I obviously didn't go that high, but got about what I expected, and it should make me competitive for DO...and maybe for my state schools

I may have a couple of "ins" at my favorite, but I'm not gettin' my hopes up yet.

Just got an invitation to interview at University of Kentucy! Wow, that was a fast turnaround after receiving my August MCAT scores.

Two acceptances. Four more interviews to go, maybe.

just had my pitt interview yesterday...and loved it! i really hope i hear something good from them soon. i also hope to set up some md/phd interviews elsewhere...but there's still plenty of time.

Very cool to hear.

I'm in the post-MCAT, pre-correspondence limbo; every day brings the question: Who will be sucker enough to grant me an interview?

I hate waiting... 🙁

EDIT

I'm wearing out my mouse by clicking Refresh on my INBOX. Maybe they waited an additional ten seconds before sending the invite, you know?

This has been, by far, the worst part for me thus far....I'm waiting on MCAT scores to get there...and LOR'S to get there..and it's driving me nuts...The LOR's should have been in weeks ago...really hackin' me off because I busted my ass to have the secondaries in before the MCAT score came back so I could keep the ball rolling.

I've been clicking "Refresh" about every three minutes for the past hour. That can't be healthy.

It occurs to me that I'm also slacking off a bit - I have to write a mid-term exam for my Intro to Philosophy kids tomorrow morning, as well as print out my lecture notes for tonight, on top of needing to get work done on my IRB documents and book chapters. Instead, here I sit, posting and clicking refresh. Now, shall we take bets as to what I'll be doing in ten minutes?

EDIT:

Enough! I run the risk of my finger fusing to the mouse. I closed the e-mail window, and am about to get productive. A bien tot, mes ami. A ce soir ou demain!
