I just interviewed at UCLA several days ago and I am curious if any of you know how the ADCOMM at UCLA works in extending acceptance letter ?
I did fairly well at the interview (I think), my interviewee mentioned several times that he/she was surprised that I only received one interview so far (despite my 3.3 gpa and 30 MCAT) and that we talked for more than 60+ minutes about everything (books, camping, and obama inauguration). Do you know who has the final say in extending the acceptance ? Will my interviewer have the final say or does it go to the committee for a vote similar to UC Davis ?

any input would be greatly appreciated.

I interviewed back in October with one of the big admission committee dogs and he spent the first 20 minutes explaining the process to me. The notes that the interviewer makes get placed in your file and your whole file is reviewed by a committee of faculty, students, and private practice physicians in the community who are leaders in their field. Each committee member ranks you in some undisclosed manner and you are given a total rank which is imputed into a computer. The computer compiles a list of the top-ranked people and decisions are made from there.

when you say the "whole file" does that imply that my MCAT score and GPA (not as competitive) are reflected along with the summary the interviewer wrote ?
I am just curious because all the first year students that I met at the interview had an upstanding academic record and MCAT score while mine is on the border line, I am trying to see if i have a chance of getting in to UCLA or not.

Yes,
I talked to a first year students who got their interview invite and their interview in March, who got in June.

Thanks for the info wontonman. so does that mean the committee members do not even know who will ultimately be admitted? Or they may have only a general idea if you were discussed favorably prior to voting?

To answer the above question, yes, whole file means your primary, LOR, secondary, etc etc.

To answer this question, I was under the impression that some discussion would take place since my interviewer mentioned that someone always liked to ask "did this applicant get their hands dirty, ie did they get into the field". Though a member might have an idea of who was discussed favorably, I think you're right in that no one knows who ultimately gets admitted. This is especially since there are multiple committees. Even if your committee reviews someone favorably, that applicant might not cut it when compared to the rankings by all the other committees. He also said that committees have a pretty good feel for good/not as good applicants which prevents any one committee from over-ranking/under-ranking into the system.

i've never posted but today I got the same thing like Dulcina. it says the letter was sent on Jan 20........

Well, for the last batch (the one that went out late december) getting the "letter sent" status update meant an acceptance. Preemptive congratulations and a bummer for me because mine hasn't been updated. 🙁

i think at this point it could mean anything based on what peeps have heard from the admissions office....but who knows

At this point if you have interviewed and it says final decision letter sent, then you are in. Congratulations.

I can't take this anymore. I am not going to check this thread until April, when they assemble the waitlist. As far as I'm concerned, I'm going to UCSD.

someone posted on the last page that starting this week all decisions would be mailed....so i wouldnt lose hope yet.
 
I just told my friend who interviewed at UCLA in Nov to check her status page, and she also has no status update.

Before people start freaking out... did *anybody else* besides luvumisu get a status update that said "letter sent -jan20th"? If a couple other people got the same message, then it confirms that indeed a batch of letters were sent out on Jan 20th....

This is supposed to be the "big batch" so I assumed a whole bunch of SDN-ers would get it, once it was time. Maybe they haven't sent anything yet?
 
I also have no change on my status update. Is it possible that they didn't update the website for everyone at the same time? Or that this batch will be continuing until early Feb, or do they really send all 1st batch letters at the same time?
 
Could be acceptances one day, rejections another, and waitlists/deferred decisions on yet another.. probably best that we just sit back and roll with the punches.
 
but only 2 people said they have acceptances, that's less than the supposedly small "recruiting batch" from December, which had like 15 people. but yeah, we'll have to just sit and wait on it.

Dulcina does not have the status update. She was just wondering if anybody else did. (I g-chatted her to ask).

So, only ONE person supposedly got an update, which is why I'm a little bit suspicious.

Possibly... my philosophy was that if Dulcina did not get in this batch, what chance do I have, and I need a little glimmer of hope that I might be able to stay in California...

Hi, I rarely post, so please don't attack me! 🙂 But I wanted to confirm that this is true...

My status page was also changed to Letter Sent ---1/20/1009. I interviewed in October. I also had this confirmed (yet rather vaguely) with the adm. office. Don't know what it implies but I'm trying not to read into things too much. I hope it means something good!!! Good luck to everyone else🙂

When you contacted the admin office, what did they say? Did they say this was the first batch, or that they are just beginning to inform the first batch. only 2 people does sound like a tiny batch.

If you don't mind saying, are you confident with your stats and app? Anyway, good luck!
 
Ugh, I feel so anxious and sick. I know as an out-of-stater with my stats, it wasn't likely I'd get accepted anyway...but my can I only hope. :0(.

Seriously, I should mentally prepare my self to leave California...🙁 Oh well, UTSW is cheaper anyway... so I will be in less debt...
 
I interviewed in September and no letter sent on update page🙁. But I think we should all try and be patient (even thought it's impossible) because UCSF is apparently sending letters of rejection first then later acceptances. My point is it seems kinda random when schools send whatever they send.

Congrats to all who have got the great news!!! Good luck to those who are waiting, myself included.

Yea, I agree. But then UCSF also doesn't even update its status page if they send you a letter...

Instead of calling home every day to ask my parents "can you check to see if I got any mail from UCSF?!" now I'm going to call home every day (for the next week) and ask "I didn't get any mail, right?!" and then revert back to "did I get any mail?!" next Thursday...

I am mentally preparing myself... but generally I am always unluckily in the category of the other who doesn't get in... it happened for undergrad, and for some of my interviews or lack of (Mayo🙁)... so I would prefer not to get too attached...

Let me rephrase what really happened. I actually contacted them for a different reason before I checked my status page today, so I cannot answer the first question. It was a pretty unique situation - and afterwards I decided to check my page.

As for the second question, I have been through a roller coaster just like everyone else. My spirits are up one minute and down the next. Throughout the whole process, I have sometimes questioned how "competitive" I really am. Sometimes I feel I am and other times not so much. I scored in the lower 30s with a 3.9, in case you were wondering - and have had some unique hardships along the way (like many others out there). I dunno, I just feel I really clicked with the school and the people. All in all, my day at UCLA was pretty awesome.

I'll come back and let you guys know one way or another. I am predicting the letter might come in the mail tomorrow - maybe at the latest Saturday if it was really sent on the 20th. It will be here soon, which ever news it is!!! :xf:

This thread gets a LOT of action, wow, 15 pages worth! Good luck to those of you still waiting, I talked to a few people and heard that a batch went out in mid Jan so its definitely a reality. More acceptances will come in feb/march before a waitlist is assembled and ppl are put on hold. UCLA has a long process so it could take through july.

Anyways, congrats to those accepted!! and gluck to those waiting!

(Dulcina - im shocked you haven't been accepted yet! I'm sure its coming soon... 🙂)

hello, i just called the adm office

the lady said that final decision letters are being sent out almost everyday from now till mid march. so there's no particular day of the week where they send a bunch out. if your status hasn't changed, that just means the adcom hasn't got to your file yet. the adcom meets 'sporadically' so we just have to sit tight.

she assured me that there are A LOT of seats left for the 2012 class. she wouldn't give me the percentage but from the way she said it im guessing like 60%-70%.

she also told me that the decisions from here on out will be mixed bag (acceptaces, waitlists, rejections) and that the 5k is given to ALL matriculating students.

This is vague. People like office people? And a single batch sent on one day or over a period of days?
 
Sorry to interrupt the speculation. But got an invite today (1/23). I've been complete since like august/sept.

It would have been really embarrassing if I didn't even get an interview at my brother's med school... he could hold that over my head forever.😉

hey! when was your interview day? I wonder if they decide on people as they interviewed, or if its just totally random. Ack im scared, i had a really early interview day and no decision yet :scared:
 
So, as of now, only 2ppl have been confirmed as to having status updates for the supposed "big batch" of acceptances?
 
OMG...I just wanted to report back that the letter is an acceptance :soexcited:. I am beaming with joy right now...this is a dream come true!!!

how did you get your invite? (ie email, phone call, etc.) i've been complete since sept and i just wanted to know whether if i still have a chance thanks

My interview was in mid-October. What I heard (though take it with a grain of salt) was that they don't even start making decisions until december, first of all. Second of all, that my file might get looked at in January, but it may be possible to get bumped to February. A med student there said that the prior year, she interviewed in November and found out in early February. Good luck to all!!!:luck:

Congrats, what dates did they give you for an interview?
 
Ok. My last post was a little vague so here's what I forgot:

I got the invite via email this morning (7:45am PST).

There is no date set for the interview yet. I get to pick my top three choices for which day of the week. And any dates I am unavailable I am supposed to fill in. Then they get back to me I guess.

Oh and I was complete 9/9/08.
