the bakke case only says that schools can't use quota systems. they can however consider race along with other categories like mcat, ec, gpa, lor's.

As for the URM controversy, while the UCs say that they dont consider URM status and race in the admissions process, how else can you justify the differences in stats between accepted URMs at UCs vs other racial groups(compare the mdapplicants profiles for URMs accepted at UCLA vs asians)? I think AA is done on a more subjective/less quantifiable form nowadays as compared to the quota systems deployed by the UCs during Bakke. I not trying to argue if AA/racial consideration is right or wrong, but I think it is naive to assume that the UCs arent still considering race in the admissions process.

As for residency topic, I think the admissions process is slightly misleading in the sense that while the selection percentages for invites for IS vs OOS is roughly the same on MSAR, those OOS applicants on avg probably had stronger applications. I think its the same policy at all public medical schools.

Personally, I think the UCs make those claims of nondiscrimination based on race/state/etc for legal reasons.

I wasn't trying to say they don't take URM status under consideration. I'm sure they do. I just pointed out that they can't legally say they do whereas they can be open about state residency.

From UCI: Preference is given to California residents and applicants who are either United States citizens or permanent residents.

From UCSF: The Committee on Admissions gives preference to California residents, who make up about 80 percent of the entering class annually.

From UCD: UC Davis School of Medicine gives preference to California residents and to applicants who are United States citizens or permanent residents.

From UCSD: Preference is necessarily afforded to California residents

That's right. I was thinking about prop 209, which prohibits any consideration of race. Like someone above me pointed out, that's probably why they developed the PRIME programs.

quick question about UCLA curriculum: Are electives only for the senior yr? Is that what was refered to as "selectives"?

Btw, Adizz, congrats on Northwestern, but how did you not get invites/acceptances from all those schools. Your stats are ridiculous.

No, selectives (which are pretty much elective classes, but you need to take at least 1) begin first year.

Also, UCLA is the only US which unfortunately does not favor in-state residents.

Congrats, LittleRocker!

I've been staring at my gmail notifier hoping for it to turn blue with an email from DGSOM for the past few days. Maybe next week will bring some good news.

Just got an interview invite by email 20 mins ago!

Congrats!! I just got one too! Does anyone know how far they're backed up with interviews? I'm hoping for an early Feb visit 🙂

Good luck to everyone still waiting! I'm OOS and have been complete since early late September. There is still hope!! :luck::luck:

i got an invite a few days ago and they gave me a mid feb date

anyone want to have a class of 2013 get-together this weekend?? I'm in town, have nothing to do, am completely unfamiliar with UCLA (and LA for that matter), and would love to meet potential classmates. Step right up! PM me!

That prior invitation goes out to current UCLA med students too! I'd love to meet someone who knows whats going on at UCLA! Thanks🙂

Unfortunately I'm living in Northern CA right now, otherwise I'd be there!

Well if the sole purpose of creating a dual degree program to serve the underserved is to find a way to do secret affirmative action 🙄 they're certainly doing a terrible job. Those programs are tiny (about 10 per school) and there are certainly a good number of Asian and Caucasian participants.

People need to get over themselves.

just got me email invite today. So happy! I went UCLA for undergrad...I don't remember Westwood being a gang area. It's right next to Bel Air!

I don't think it was the sole reason they created the PRIME programs. I certainly didn't mean to make it sound like that. They're totally admirable programs with noble goals, but you're kidding yourself if you think increasing the diversity of the class wasn't one of their goals in creating these.

This whole discussion was about whether UCLA takes state of residency into account in admissions decisions. I'm not sure how it got to this point.

People need to get over themselves.
Indeed

Well your quoted statement certainly made it seem like you thought it was the main reason. (" I was thinking about prop 209, which prohibits any consideration of race. Like someone above me pointed out, that's probably why they developed the PRIME programs.")

Fear not AA opponents! Like I said, it's about 15 spots, and you probably didn't want to spend that extra year talking about health disparities anyway.

Thank you! This is really good information. I'm curious about UCLA's financial aid? The school's average indebtedness is really low (especially considering how expensive it is to live in westwood)! I think it was at about 85k give or take. Have you found the school to be quite generous with financial aid and do you think tuition will remain affordable despite california's budget problems? Thanks!

You're right about UCLA having a low indebtedness. It is a relative bargain amongst medical schools and does indeed give all accepted first year students a $5,000 scholarship for their first year.

Regarding financial aid, how much aid you receive obviously depends on many things, such as your parent's income, assets, etc. I'm paying for things mostly through loans and some modest savings, and wasn't awarded any grants or scholarships (other than the aforementioned $5,000 that everyone gets), so I don't have much knowledge about financial aid, though I do know of friends who have received grants, scholarships, etc. I'm sorry I can't give you much more info about financial aid than this.

I do think the tuition will increase over the next few years. I have no inside information on this, but I imagine that the budget problems will result in tuition increases beyond what one might expect for inflation.

I realize that the prospect of paying a lot of money to attend medical school can be quite daunting. But, I personally don't worry about it and advise the rest of you not to worry about it either. The debts you will incur are well spent on an education that will allow you to earn comparatively handsome salaries once your entire course of medical training is complete, and it should be quite possible to pay off these debts over the first several years after you start working as long as you borrow wisely and don't live beyond your means as a student. And this is even more true if you attend a school with fairly low tuition like UCLA or the other UCs.

by invitation I mean pretty please! Self-guided tours are getting old

I would give you a tour, but I have not heard my decision yet... if by some miracle I do get in, I would be happy to give you a tour...😀

thanks. and i don't really know why i havent gotten any invites from those schools. i wish i could tell you whats wrong with my app, but that would i guess kinda defeat the point of sdn haha

First batch of decisions will go out NEXT WEEK!😱 And this will include ALL correspondences...not just acceptances...:wow: I just went to the admissions office... Also the letters will be going out over the next few weeks!

Be Prepared!

Good luck!:luck::xf:

Do you think they meant they will start next week and the "first batch" will continue for several weeks?

ah okay, for some reason i had thought first batch means they send all the letters out the same day or same time.

does anyone know if it's true that for ucla students, URSA indicates if you have been admitted a few days before you get the letter? That is what it said on last year's thread, but I don't know where on URSA or what it says.

shoot--i just noticed today that my transcripts are still "requested" and not "received". I asked the guy with the british accent when they were needed, and he said they are needed for matriculation, not acceptance. Odd thing is... I sent my transcripts to AMCAS, and all the other schools got them. Does UCLA need something special... like do I need to send it directly to them?

On a side note, he said decisions would be coming out february for ppl that have already interviewed =(

I think he has already told that to several people but others have been told it will be sooner.

Yeah, you need to send your transcripts directly to UCLA.

I was also wondering about the transcripts before, I was also told that you send them when you enroll to UCLA, but they don't need them yet

Hey does anyone have the fax number or address to send update letters to??? I cant seem to find it.

Thanks!

Hey, So did anyone else get a AMCAS background check notification this morning? The only school on the list that I am waiting to hear from is UCLA. Good news? No news? Any insights?

Thanks!

Is it possible that one of the schools that has already extended you an admission is just getting around to it now? Or is UCLA the only possibility/school that runs a CBC that you've applied to? Either way it only means good news for you.

(no CBC verification or status update here).

Ah yes...There is one other school that I have already heard from on that list (a while ago though). Looks like a false alarm. Thanks!

I also received a background check email, and I haven't even been interviewed at UCLA 😛. I think it may have been for BU, which is the only school I know I've been accepted at.

It's possible that yours is for UCLA, and mine is for UCSD (the only other school I've finished my interview at that does background checks), but given that I only interviewed there a week ago I'm thinking it's for BU.

Besides, are you really worried about UCLA? Looks like you've got plenty of acceptances elsewhere 😛.

does the school name even appear on a CBC?

Does anyone know about how late last year they stopped extending interview invitations?

Thanks for freaking me out😡

ucla is making me so anxious!! I wish I knew when we were going to find out! :scared::scared:

I sometimes think about what this thread will look like the day decisions are given out, all painted red with the blood of the fallen and illuminated by the glow of the victorious. It will be hilarious and terrible at the same time.

You need to go into the office and tell them to hand you your letter right then instead of mail it because they cant seem to find the post office. Pick up mine too.

Seriously, it's time to be proactive about this whole thing. I am going to the office on Fri. and demanding to be interviewed right then and there. We all need to storm that admissions office and get some answers from those people.

I would, but I do not think they are allowed to...

Actually that seems like a pretty good idea...

hahahah

seriously though, I think n3opologist is right and we won't know until early feb

Hi folks,

I just interviewed at UCLA several days ago and I am curious if any of you know how the ADCOMM at UCLA works in extending acceptance letter ?
I did fairly well at the interview (I think), my interviewee mentioned several times that he/she was surprised that I only received one interview so far (despite my 3.3 gpa and 30 MCAT) and that we talked for more than 60+ minutes about everything (books, camping, and obama inauguration). Do you know who has the final say in extending the acceptance ? Will my interviewer have the final say or does it go to the committee for a vote similar to UC Davis ?

any input would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,
D
