Really? I'm not trying to kick up a fuss, and I don't care about the rest of the debate, but LA as a location over San Diego?
And you would know because you've surveyed all the premeds in America?
Nice attempt to avoid having to make an argument...
Once again, leave the UCLA thread if you don't care for the school, I'm not gonna continue debating with you.
With the logic that people pick UCSD if they don't get into UCLA, does it follow that people pick UCLA if they don't get into UCSF?
I don't think it does. I think that there are people who prefer different locations, be it SD, LA, or SF.
So I interviewed on 2/20 and my status page was recently updated saying that the final decision letter was sent on the 3/12. Has anyone else received this 3/12 status change?
Thank you! All of our state schools are incredible and while UCLA might have the most "name recognition" to laypeople, that is a really paltry factor in school selection (at least for me) since it has no bearing on what kind of residency/experience I will get.
Bottom line is that UCSD, UCLA, UCSF are all great schools. I have no problem admitting that lots of those accepted to SF will take that program over LA.
The funny thing is that chessknt himself would choose UCLA over UCSD (as evident by his post history and the replies he made in his Mdapps), so I'm not sure if you are the right person to be making these arguments...

I noticed the update today, but I dont think I checked my status page yesterday.
Sounds like this mini-batch is acceptances so congrats! Looks like you had a bunch of great interviews and no acceptances as of yet, so hopefully this is your first. Nice application.
No. When I got my acceptance, they only let me know from the letter, no phone call.don't we get a phone call if it was an acceptance
it still hasn't hit me that I got in......99.999% sure I'll be there next year
hey bobdogsam,
my status was updated 3/10 as well, but still no letter. How far do u live from UCLA? and just for heads up, big or small envelope?
Thanks!

My original post was simply a response to the opinion that UCLA does not care about how interested you are in their program and was based in FACTS I have heard from various adcom. You went ahead and turned this into a discussion of whether or not all people love LA and how it compares to other schools etc. If you don't like LA for whatever reason and were accepted at UCSD then you should be ecstatic and have no reason to argue with me on the UCLA thread. However, I highly doubt that IF offered an acceptance at UCLA, you would take UCSD over it. This is because, like I have said before, 95% or more of people would take a UCLA acceptance over one at UCSD med. Who are you to say that the devotion of people such as myself to UCLA is mindless? If you don't care for the school then why don't you withdraw from the WL?
In response to the other posters comments about UCSD. I think UCSD is a great program, I really do. It was one of my top choices going into the application process due to its great location, prestige, and research opportunities. Many people would love to go to UCSD for med school. However, when compared against UCLA, the vast majority prefer UCLA because, although the differences are small, they generally favor UCLA. Ranking of UCLAs program is higher, overall name recognition is higher, grading is true P/F as opposed to Honors, etc, affiliated hospitals are more renowned (3rd best hospital in the nation), most, not all, prefer living in LA to SD, and finally the consensus is that the environment at UCLA is more laid back and less competitive.
Now, this is not to take anything away from UCSD. There are tons of applicants from CA that would kill to have a UCSD acceptance and not be forced to leave the state. Its simply that very few would prefer UCSD over UCLA, assuming they come out to be the same price (meaning you don't have a scholarship offer from UCSD). Most people on the UCSD thread who have been discussing this issue have also reached this conclusion.
That is all.
Hey, when did you interview?
I interviewed October 23, you?
2/19. no status change for me tho 🙁
I thought my interview was one of the best I've ever had. My interviewer told me I was a phenomenal applicant and that if I ever want to go into derm I should go find her later. But Ive heard time and time again that the interview is just a formality so Im not betting too much on it. Im very much a realist in terms of hopefulness because UCLA is really hard to get into regardless of your interview. UCLA is hands down the place I want to go so I'm very very sad I didnt get a status change. Does that mean I'm waitlisted or rejected?
Speaking of derm, did your interviewer happen to be Dr. Jennifer Haley? She was mine. She is a dermatologist/dermasurgeon.
Yes, actually.
There may still be updates this week, but I'm not sure they may be good..judging from the past. They sent out acceptances before the weekend of the middle of the month and waitlist/hold after the weekend.. =(
My mail finally came, and the letter that was sent on 3/12 is an acceptance! I am so happy, this is my first! I wish everyone good luck with their decisions from UCLA![]()

At this point it appears that everyone receiving letters later this month will not be receiving good news. 🙁
Congrats bobdogsam and bluestar (and anyone else!), join the facebook group when you have a chance! 🙂
