UCSF and UCLA both interview around 500 people to fill classes of about 160-170.

UCLA interviews closer to 750. 250 is a big difference.

You figure there would have to be substantial overlap in interviewed applicants since they both look for many of the same qualities in their students.........I want to say that about 70% of the applicants who interviewed at both will get in to at least one. That's a total guess though.

I know of way too many people who interviewed at UCLA and got skunked at UCSF. I don't think there is too huge of an overlap.

That being said, your chance of getting into at least one of those schools is exactly 65%. I ran a few numbers just for you (MSAR data). So, your estimate of 70% was close. But, don't forget that MSAR data for acceptances includes people taken off the waitlist, which may happen to you. Good luck

Anyone know the phone number for the admission office ? I can't seem to find them anywhere.

thanks

Anyone know when the next round of decisions is coming out? I interviewed 2/24 and am starting to get anxious...😕

who knows....i doubt you hear soon.....BUT with UCLA's timetable anything is possible haha......there are still people who interviewed in October/November that have not heard back from UCLA.

Maybe this weekend since it is once again the middle of a month.

Yeah, put me in the pool of those who interviewed in October and still have not heard. I spoke with someone in the UCLA admissions office on Friday who told me that a decision had been made and that it was awaiting executive approval (anyone have any idea on what that could mean?). I still don't have a status update. Conclusion: I should hear in the next few weeks, so who knows when the next wave of notifications will hit.

They are waiting for God Himself to sign the letter. Have you ever seen the movie The 10 Commandments? He signs it just like the stone tablets.

So, out of the blue, I received an interview invite today! So, all hope is NOT lost, I guess for those who applied late. Although it is rather late to be getting an interview, I am extremely grateful for the opportunity. Hopefully, there are still interviews for actual admission. But with each passing day, that chance looks bleaker and bleaker. I'm just hoping for the waitlist.

BTW...I was complete November 17th.

Does anyone know whether UCLA provides a 'Statement of Confidentiality' form for letters of recommendation? I want to send in one more rec letter but don't want to do it through my school's Letter Service. Thanks.

Do you mean UCLA undergrad or UCLA med school? I went to UCLA undergrad and they provided a confidentiality letter that the writer signed. I believe you could use it even if you didn't use the letter service...

For the record, my status was updated today, saying that yesterday (03/10) my decision letter was sent...

awww crap. i don't have a status update. does that mean i'm rejected or waitlisted. poop.

FINALLY! A status change....letter sent 3/10.......interviewed in November hahaha

anyone know if this batch is a mix of decisions or what

Who knows. seems they are following last year's timeline again by releasing decisions every middle of the month.

Maybe this batch will follow the progression of the february notifications?
i.e. first batch=acceptance, second batch=wait list/hold?

Thank you for replying. I meant for the the UCLA med school. I just called the Admissions office and they said they don't provide a confidentiality form. Oh well.

Anyone who interviewed in February get a status change yet? I interviewed 2/19 and no news yet. I guess its only been three weeks so I shouldn't be freaking myself out. I called the admissions office and the nice lady told me that they are sending out sporatic letters till the end of march. She hinted that there wouldn't be one batch of acceptances and one batch of rejections, etc.

well they've been "hinting" at that for like 2+ years and there still hasnt been a mixed batch (idk completely tho).........this round could always be the first tho LOL

i interviewed on the second week of Feb, no status change. good luck!

nothing in the mail today.....bummer........wait another day i guess

i interviewed in 2nd week of february, but do not want to check the status page. if it comes it'll come, i dont want to face the anxiety of trying to guess what's in the mail. for ucla students, if you get accepted to the medical school, i think from what i hear from a friend, something called the ursa is updated or something. Good luck to people waiting for mail.

hahah lol, i ll tell you a data point from my friend. The friend interviewed late january and has no status update as of 3/10. haha. Good luck bobdogsam, I hope you receive a nice letter in the mail!

Given the fact that the only two people who got status changes that we know of interviewed in November and October, I think it is safe to say that they will be sending more acceptances this month for people who interviewed later. Since Im pretty sure they have not filled the class.

Man, the only thing I have learned about UCLA's admissions process is that they don't give two ****s about who really wants to go to UCLA, who is just casually interested, and who just applied because it was a california school.

-bitter, waitlisted, and only interested in going to UCLA

There are more people who REALLY want to go to UCLA than you think. Something like 800 premeds a year apply from UCLA, and its safe to say AT LEAST 500 of them view UCLA as their top choice. That's enough to fill 3 times the class size. Then you have bitter kids who didn't get into UCLA for undergrad who are at UCSD, UCI, UCD, UCR, USC, who have UCLA as their top choice. On top of that you have kids who left CA for undergrad who are DYING to come back to a top 10 school in their home state for cheap...

Tons of people. That's why when I've spoken to high ranked admissions people at UCLA the sentiment has been that we ASSUME UCLA is your top choice when you apply, and as a result, letters of interest and stuff play a smaller role than at other schools. Under this assumption, they can start to pick people based on merit, life story, experiences, and race (a JOKE...but is it?) and other factors.

Lolz, how self-absorbed. Bitter people who didnt get into UCLA for undergrad? How about intelligent ones that realized undergrad is a stepping stone and took the best deal which didnt happen to be UCLA? Which one of your slobbering mutt catagories does that put me in?

Self absorbed or the truth? Face the facts, most people who went to UCSD, UCD, UCI, etc were not accepted to UCLA for undergrad. If you were accepted and chose not to go for different reasons then you are the exception, not the rule. But that is besides the point, the point is that many people are vying for few spots at UCLA. Many are bitter simply because they did not get the outcome they desired.

Let me take a stab in the dark and say you were waitlisted.

I am going to go ahead and agree with MJ.. the only reason I went to UCSD is because I didn't get into UCLA and a majority of my UCSD friends (i'd say >90%) felt the same way. I'd say the same holds true for medical school. I doubt anybody would pick UCSD over UCLA if given the choice. Haha see you at UCSD next year chessknight (bummer I know).

Wow the arrogance. Please PM me your real name so I can be sure to bow down before you in the event that I am ever graced by your awesome presence and pay your due respect oh great one.

I am facing the facts and most level-headed people follow A) the money and B) the location. Some people (myself included) dont think LA is the best place in socal by a long shot, we just like options for comparison since, as has been repeated over 9000 times, the name of the med school is rather insignificant in the long run, just like the name of your undergrad is. Just because the loudest people are mindlessly devoted to UCLA for some undefinable reason does not mean the majority are.

There are also out-of-staters who have never been to California for more than the interview day, who really want to go to UCLA as well, because the school seemed really laid back and friendly.

I got into UCLA for undergrad but chose UCSD because UCLA is 10 mins from my house and I wanted to get away for a while.

I think your argument makes it sound like UCSD is a second-rate school that people are resigned to go to, rather than would want to go to. Just because it's someone's second choice (which can be for a ton of different reasons, both personal and academic), does not mean that people feel as if they are being forced to go to UCSD as that is the only place they got into. Most likely, UCSD isn't the only acceptance they have.

What I will never understand, is why UCSD seems to be so highly disregarded. It has consistently been ranked number 14. It's ranking is above schools like Emory, Cornell, Vanderbilt, Mayo, Mt Sinai etc...schools where people are falling over themselves to go to. Yet, the majority of people on this forum act as though UCSD is a crap school. Heck, if you think about it, UCLA only entered the top ten for medical school two years ago. Before that, it was ranked number 13, just right above UCSD. So, is it really all that much better of a school, or is silly undergrad ideology just carrying through?

My 03/10 update friend,

Mail status? My town has a notoriously inefficient post office, but hopefully I'll receive something today. The mail does not usually come until mid-afternoon though.

yooo,

no mail delivery yet....my post office is notoriously slow too. At least the letter is in the mail......(hopefully).

if i got the "letter sent" application status and haven't been invited for an interview yet, does that mean its a rejection?

🙁 It most likely is. Interviews come by email or phone only I think.

My original post was simply a response to the opinion that UCLA does not care about how interested you are in their program and was based in FACTS I have heard from various adcom. You went ahead and turned this into a discussion of whether or not all people love LA and how it compares to other schools etc. If you don't like LA for whatever reason and were accepted at UCSD then you should be ecstatic and have no reason to argue with me on the UCLA thread. However, I highly doubt that IF offered an acceptance at UCLA, you would take UCSD over it. This is because, like I have said before, 95% or more of people would take a UCLA acceptance over one at UCSD med. Who are you to say that the devotion of people such as myself to UCLA is mindless? If you don't care for the school then why don't you withdraw from the WL?

In response to the other posters comments about UCSD. I think UCSD is a great program, I really do. It was one of my top choices going into the application process due to its great location, prestige, and research opportunities. Many people would love to go to UCSD for med school. However, when compared against UCLA, the vast majority prefer UCLA because, although the differences are small, they generally favor UCLA. Ranking of UCLAs program is higher, overall name recognition is higher, grading is true P/F as opposed to Honors, etc, affiliated hospitals are more renowned (3rd best hospital in the nation), most, not all, prefer living in LA to SD, and finally the consensus is that the environment at UCLA is more laid back and less competitive.

Now, this is not to take anything away from UCSD. There are tons of applicants from CA that would kill to have a UCSD acceptance and not be forced to leave the state. Its simply that very few would prefer UCSD over UCLA, assuming they come out to be the same price (meaning you don't have a scholarship offer from UCSD). Most people on the UCSD thread who have been discussing this issue have also reached this conclusion.

That is all.

Im pretty sure there is some fancy logical fallacy word for your continuous use of "most people" but I am not a fan of latin phrases so Ill just leave it at no, none of what you said is correct for "most people" just the people on SDN.
