Rowdy, that was the most G-d awful noise I have ever heard! If trash cans could have sex, it would sound like that. I can't believe I actually paused Carole King to listen to that! 😛

I did like the hair though... apparently long flowing locks didn't die with the 80s...

by the way, trash cans CAN have sex... why do you think there are so many of them?!? duh!

As for the people popping in and out of a thread - well, for the secondary threads, once you aren't waiting on a decision from the school, there isn't much to discuss/obsess about anymore. Those who are rejected don't want to pick a scab, and those who are accepted can just provide encouragement from time to time. Can't wait to see EVERYONE in the class thread though!

Yeah, you're completely right. We're totally spoiled by people like you, linguini, scrubslover, et al. and I do think it's above and beyond (true to this thread's form) to keep on posting in the secondary thread after an acceptance. I was mostly just bending my observations to lend some extra optimism to the thread (and make myself feel better about my own lack of news).

I really do wonder about the other group though, and if there aren't SOME applicants out there who heard back from umass, and not in the happy way, and we just never hear about it. I think that if/when I hear back in that sad sort of way, I will let you guys know.

Also, welcome skyline! Thanks for chiming in🙂

HAHAHA ok so next you have to request the web-traffic stats from SDN and look at the changes/time in visitors to this thread. Then do the same thing for previous years and track the posts of everyone that posted to UMass thread, what schools they went to and their stats. Then report back. Thanks

Can I really do this??? I'm all over it.

Lol, Sorry, too oblique a reference I guess. That was Hayseed Dixie, a bluegrass band that covers 70s/80s hair/metal bands. That vid was aerosmith, walk this way. See?? 😉 girlschool is classic. How about warrant cherry pie.

I never thought of Aerosmith as a hair/glam band... I mean, they formed in the late 60s and the hair didn't fully grow out until really the 80s... but some do categorize them that way.

I did like Hayseed Dixie's cover of War Pigs!

I have finished making my nanoparticles and have nothing to do for the next several hours and I am finding myself stressing about tomorrow more than usual. Anyone else anticipating tomorrow even more than normal?

South Florida is pretty distracting, have fun! I don't have a vacation for about another month, so its just good old fashioned neurotic obsessing tomorrow. 😛

If you want something distracting, you are all invited to help me research Coxsackie B virus infection resulting in cardiomyopathy. This happened to my roommate's sister :scared:(age early 30s) and I am trying to help them figure out her prognosis and what her life will be like after transplant (she's on the list). I read she could need long-term care and that she could still be infectious and there is no cure? but would like some help looking into this...

Not to be a downer, but I figured if anyone would be interested in such a thing... they would be on SDN 👍

Thanks in advance for warm thoughts/wishes/prayers/meditations/etc.

I am an emotional wreck today. Not sure if it's the impending friday doom blues, but it seems likely.

Hey everyone! I've been on vacation all week and haven't been able to check in here... what's going on? (So far all I've glanced at is something about trash can sex? Nice...)

Anyway good luck tomorrow all!!!!!! :luck:

The police just found my car that was stolen a month and a half ago!!! This bodes well for today being a great day, and the recovery (and costly ignition replacement) should keep me away from the status check for a good portion of the day. Off to find my car and start it with a screwdriver! Good luck today everyone:luck:

A lot of their music, including their original stuff, is awesome. But then again, I love bluegrass. I agree that Aerosmith is definitely on the line for hair bands, but Black Sabbath is no where near it, hence no war pigs. 😀

Wow, that's awesome they found your car - a month and a half later no less. I didn't think that ever happened! Good luck recovering it, and I hope you come home to good news. :luck::luck:

I'm jealous of everyone who's on vacay.

Grrr! Yet another week of no status change!

I actually haven't had a great couple of days, and I am in the mood for venting, so here is a list of things that have recently annoyed/irritated/pissed off/otherwise impinged upon the peace of mind of virusgirl (in chronological order):

1.) Propionic anhydride
2.) Spiders
3.) BU taking longer than expected to make my admissions decision
4.) My ex
5.) Spiders again
6.) UMass taking longer than expected to make my admissions decision

All other disgruntled parties are welcome to chime in with their own lists of frustration should they so choose.

And with that said, I wish everyone the best of luck today!

Yeah, I think it would be insulting to the Sabbath to call them a hair band. Still, I liked the cover.

Well, those things can certainly be irritating, but try to keep it in perspective - at least you don't have to deal with ideopathic dilated cardiomyopathy with a 10% ejection fraction. On the flip side, it does make for really interesting research… and the MGH library (no ID reqd) is really nice for that!

There's this big nasty sumb*tch living in my bedroom. I would squish him, but I am a very little person, and he is a very big spider who keeps making aggressive overtures. He definitely wears the eight-legged pants in this relationship.

This is basically my worst nightmare. I feel for you.

Aw...just remember that it's more afraid of you than you are of it. 🙂

well, i'm in florida now, and i can't seem to keep my mind off the fact that i could have heard from umass, bu, and vcu today! maybe there's still hope. i'm considering calling brenda and just flat out asking if any acceptances are going out today🙄

is this happening to anyone else? when i check my status on the umass page it keeps kicking me off and saying: "Your PeopleSoft connection has expired. For increased security on this site, connections are expired after a delay of 240 minutes." i haven't been logged on all day!:scared:

Well, I can't speak to your UMass acceptance. Maybe try a different Internet browser?

No one heard from BU today (although word on the street has it that letters are possibly going in the mail Monday). No word from VCU either, although that barely counts because if we'd been accepted or rejected, we'd have been notified. Everyone is just waiting around for wait-lists.

Hi all,

I have been one of those silent listeners. I interviewed at UMASS at the beginning of February and have not heard back. I've been wondering though, how diverse is UMASS? I guess the question is specially targeted to current students, as the stats can only give you a basic view. Is there a large presence of students of diverse backgrounds, or students born outside of the US?

Thanks!

Hi Chocolate -

It's interesting you brought that up. I'm an applicant, not a current student, but of the 6 schools I interviewed at, UMass was by FAR the most diverse interview group, particularly with URM representing. It was also quite diverse in terms of undergrad schools represented. I felt it was a particularly positive thing, and have been meaning to ask the same question.

Hey so, I know this is a UMass forum and everything, but I'm in a masters program at BU med, so if you guys have any questions about BU I'd be happy to try to field them. Because really, this is the happiest and most supportive admissions forum on this site, so why not?

I did the Medical Science masters (I think it has it's own little page on this site somewhere) so a lot of our courses are the same as the first year med students'.

Administratively they tend to be a bit of a nightmare, nearly as bad as UMass when it comes to sending out acceptances/rejections/etc.

Anyway, figure I'd throw it out there as something to distract us.

Pssh, that's impossible. Our single minded dedication to this UMass admissions process is as unwavering as.....Oooh! Shiny!!

Where was I?

Oh yes, I'm writing my second letter of intent this week, if only this blinking light would stop distracting me.

Hi all,

I know I asked before, but I'm throwing it out there again now that our thread seems to be gaining some momentum with new posters ...

Did anyone here apply MD/PhD to UMass? I'm going out of my mind waiting to hear back!

I think UMass is playing "hard to get" with us ... and it's totally working/making us more obsessed with it ... ha:laugh:

I did MD/PhD. Interviewed in December. Didn't hear back, and neither did my friend.

Me too! What an agonizing almost-four months! I think there is still hope though -- most of the current students who took us out to dinner said they heard in April.

Since April is nearly upon us, here is some info from the spring 08 UMass thread to help set expectations and hopefully slightly alleviate the anxiety level.
I am sure someone will exact my estimates and look up all years going back to SDN founding 😉 but here is the general info:

4/3 - first friday of April - no news; lots of posts bemoaning the long process, several plots to exact revenge on admissions, one spontaneous combustion.

4/11 (Second Friday in April) Small number of acceptances

No reported news the next week

4/24 - Fourth Friday in April - 18 or so waitlist notifications, 1 noted acceptance

4/29 - the next tues/weds - several acceptances

5/02 - First Friday in May - 11 or so rejections(including me last year), i believe snail mail maybe email

Note, a few people did not hear anything at this point even after big batch of rejections. Not sure what happened to them, I had a slow mail and didn't get my rejection until 5/9, not sure about others.

5/12 - waitlist movement --> 4 or so acceptances

5/16 - final notifications sent out, no notifications noted last year but likely more waitlist/rejections? maybe random acceptance?

Beyond 5/16 - end of May had some waitlist movement and continued at a trickle over the summer

Thanks for posting this! I'm a little sad about how few people actually got accepted during April... in some weird way my brain has been looking at this like "if you can seriously wait six months, then it will all obviously work out in your favor," which doesn't seem to match very well with reality. Oh April, how filled with dashed hopes you are.

Hi Hopeful UMass-ers

For all of you who interviewed in December or even February... I have been waiting since October! I am really hoping that the length of wait isn't indicative of anything. The timeline posted below (thank you!) is making me nervous. Somehow the long wait seemed protective and now that the cycle truly is winding down it is getting scary!

Hope everyone is having a fabulous week...

I got accepted last year at the end of April and never wrote anything on these forums about it so don't take what happened last year to mean that only a few people got accepted this late. My roommate didn't get accepted until early May and I don't believe they were on this forum either.

There should be quite a few acceptances towards the end of April. I know a lot of current students who got accepted after Second Look Day (which was in middle of April last year).

UMASS can't overfill the class since it is a state school so things tend to take longer but good news is I believe the incoming class size is going to be increased over ours which was about 114.

Pretty far up the top. I applied to 3 MD/PhD schools. Rejected at one. Interviewed (with bad news) at the other. Interviewed with no news here.

Can I ask if you guys are OOS or IS? I also interviewed for the MD/PhD in Feb and haven't heard a single thing, although I did email them to ask if we can still send in updates/supplements to our apps and Anne said that the committee is still reviewing. I hope that means they are still chugging away.

Hey everyone -

I have been a silent reader of these posts since the fall. I interviewed at UMass in early Sept, and was accepted 1/23.

First I just wanted to keep everyone optimistic by saying that another student I know interviewed that same day as me, and was recently accepted! (last week I think?)

Second, I have some questions, specifically about FinAid. The application is due 4/15, and I keep getting emails about having to complete a Stafford Loan Entrance Interview and pick a loan lender. I emailed the Stafford people and they said to wait until you know which school you are attending before completing this. I am about 99% sure on UMass, so I'm not quite sure if I should fill this in yet.... Also, I have no idea how to go about choosing a lender for my loans.

If anybody could steer me in the right direction that would be a great help!

Thanks a lot and good luck in advance this Friday!

Hi floffles - first of all - come on over to the class thread in allopathic, you may get more responses over there. Second, you should do the entrance interview and pick a lender, but don't sign the MPN. Do the entrance interview from the UMass finaid site (different schools have their own portals for it). Doing the interview and picking a lender don't mean anything if you don't end up going to UMass, and getting it out of the way isn't a bad thing. I don't think they're absolutely necessary to get an award package though. I would write or call the finaid office to make sure, they're very helpful.

Congrats on your acceptance! It's nice to know that there's still hope for those of us who interviewed all the way back in September!

In regard to picking a loan lender, it really doesn't matter which one you pick. The lenders used to have different "perks" if you will, related to whether you used direct deposit, paid on time, etc. These perks included reductions in interest rate, reduction in principal upon graduation, etc. But, those perks are largely gone now, thanks to our craptastic economy. I made some phone calls when I was filling out my Tulane paperwork, and they all said the same thing. So, you will get the same money, with the same interest, no matter who you go with.

The only reason your particular school choice is at all relevant is because some schools already have a streamlined process in place with certain lenders -- that is, you don't have to fill out a lot of paperwork because the school is used to working with them. But I don't think any school can require you to use a particular lender, so school choice is sort of a moot point. Maybe you could call the schools you're deciding between and see if they have any lenders in common that they're used to working with. Or talk to current UMass students and see which lenders students tend to use. But ultimately, none of this will make a huge difference. (I think) any school can work with any lender, and your lender choice is absolutely irrelevant as they are all currently the same.

Has anyone noticed that we have a "reputation" thingy in our profiles?

I have one gray box. Apparently I am so boring that I don't even merit a color?
