2008 Match Lists

Hi everyone,
General Stats:

90 matched this year: 60% at 3 places: Stanford (30), Harvard programs (14), UCSF (8). 93% got their top 3. the link is below. 🙂

http://deansnewsletter.stanford.edu/#1

Displaying my ignorance of the match process, but when it says 93 percent matched into one of their top 3 choices, does that mean 7 percent had to scramble? How many choices do students rank? 3?

No, there is no limit to the number of programs one may rank (although there is a fee for over 20). The average number would depend on specialty and competitiveness of the applicant, but 3 would be unusually low.

Thanks for that...I have much to learn.

And that does make it quite impressive that 93 percent matched into their top 3...wow, especially considering the schools where they matched...

Which kind of begs a question - I watched some of the choppy live feed of the Vanderbilt match last week, and some of the people seemed to have a pretty good idea of where they matched (had T shirts on, held up sweatshirts, etc.). Is there a lot of "winking and nodding" going on with these matches - informal understandings - or is it a truly black box process?

Some programs treat it as a black box, but I got letters and calls from a bunch of programs as well assuring me I would match and encouraging me to rank them highly. One chairman invited me to dinner one on one.

However, they are strictly forbidden from making binding agreements, and the process is notorious for programs that lie to you about your prospects (because they think it might raise them on your match list).

The results also come out as an e-mail, so it's possible that they knew where they were going before the celebration.

Rosalind Franklin is like 70% west coast!! what's up with that?

Places like RFU and NYMC get populations of Californians who were "overlooked" by the UCs.
If they all have the same plan as I do, they have all been working hard for 4 years to return for residency.

That and there's just a large number of UC grads. I've met fellow UC grads at every interview I've been on. And I didn't get an interview at a UC.

Does where you match have any correlation with where you end up working/practicing?

I'm wondering if I should go to a school that matches well in state because I want to live there. Or would it be worth it more to go to a more prestigious more competitively matching school outside that state?

I'm wondering if I should go to a school that matches well in state because I want to live there. Or would it be worth it more to go to a more prestigious more competitively matching school outside that state?

My greatest criterion in picking a residency was being able to get the best jobs in my area of choice. My #1 was the program with an amazing national/global reputation, and asking around I learned that they were getting excellent jobs in my area. #2 was the local program.

My perception is that alumni network is very important for getting a lot of desirable jobs, at least in Anesthesia.

From the more prestigious school you should have no problem returning to your local area if that is what you want. The question is if there is value in leaving. How much flexibility do you want? If you are set on a location for life, I think there is merit in sticking around, settling down, and making your connections.

match lists are a fair criteria for judging a school. Sure, just cause a school sends x amount of people into neurosurg doesnt mean admission to that school guarantees your career as a neurosurgeon, but at least you know its possible. where else can you get a sense of where graduates from certain programs are going, and into which types of fields? I dont blame applicatns from wanting to see matchlists, theres a lot of info there

Although I think comparing most match lists is voodoo, this one is clearly better than most. (I'm jealous)
in terms of what 😱? 2 derms and 2 plastics?

other schools have 2x or 3x that many people in derm of plastics

Yes, it's interesting to look at a list but that should be way down on the list of why one would attend a certain school. Each school from the #1 to so called crappier schools place students in all the specialties in relatively similar numbers over the years.

For those interested here is how SLU ppl matched this year, we don't have an electronic version yet so I won't list locations

I'm looking at where people are going in various fields. I have no interest in what they want to do when they grow up.

Match lists are important to a point, however they should RARELY be a deciding factor. I consider it more of a gauge of what type of students the school lets in and what where they are interested in going.

Match lists can be helpful, but people often compare numbers between schools in certain specialties. That's when you get into trouble.

A good example of this is an earlier poster questioning Stanford's reputation on the basis of the #of SMS students that chose to match into Derm/plastics this year.

Match lists are not useful because of selection bias. Schools don't do well in the match, students do. Schools that have a lot of high-achieving students are going to have a lot of students going into prestigious programs. Those students probably would have done well had they gone elsewhere. It really is all about individual achievement.

If you think this whole point about selection bias is some sort of trivial technicality, you're probably not going to do very well on Step I and your prospects will be limited wherever you go.

Certainly what you are saying has some degree of truth. But it is hard for me to believe that every single person admitted to Johns Hopkins does ridiculously well on the boards. In fact, I know this not to be true. However, these people still end up matching incredibly well. Even admissions ppl at Hopkins admitted to me on my interview day that the students dont have to worry so much about grades, scores, competition etc. because the reputation of the school carries enormous weight. It may not seem fair, but thats simply how the system works. The better the school that you go to, the better off you will be.

well ok, for me personally it's what, not where. Matching into the specialty I really want anywhere in the US is waay better than matching IM or FP at MGH

So if 2/2 derm applicants from Stanford and 5/25 derm applicants from Podunk successfully matched, you'd go to Podunk?

These match lists give you numerators but no denominators (ie. how many applied), so your interpretation method is severely limited.

If I was interested in Derm I would compare the quality of programs that Stanford people matched in with those that the Podunk people matched in. Even then, I don't know their geographic needs, nor am I particularly familiar with where the derm powerhouses are nationally.

ok, I concede, it's pointless to interpret match lists in terms what specialties people get into because we don't know how many applied, how many matched/not matched etc.

peace

Funny, some people claim that what school you go to matters because you'll "be better prepared for the boards" which is also generally based on no evidence.

Also, you're talking now about gross differences in reputation. You don't need to scrutinize match lists to know that Hopkins has a big name.

I think you overestimate the value of a big name though. For some reason people in medicine are obsessed with the idea that once you get to a certain level of prestige, it will carry you for the rest of your career. It ain't so.

I'm at UCSF .. a lot of us do ridiculously well on the boards .. many of us score below national average .. how well you do on the boards is entirely up to you .. some of us studied hard the first 2 years, some of us obviously didn't .. this year 49 out of 143 matched at UCSF (mostly IM and peds ... I'll post the match list soon), so in some cases it helps to go to med school here if you want to stay here (or in the bay area) .. we have a few ppl who made connections here and stayed for surgery, derm, and plastics .. but you still have to kick *** while you're here .. we had a few who scrambled this year .. nothing is ever certain .. all you can do is go to the best school that you think you'll be happy at and work hard while you're there ..

in terms of what 😱? 2 derms and 2 plastics?

That does not matter. Those same people could have picked plastics or derm and could have easily matched. I guess students weren't interested in derm or plastics this year, that's all.

Looking at the Harvard match list, I wonder if the 2 people who matched into Mayo were the couple in the NYTimes article who were trying to couples match into derm. Anyone know?
