Yeah I would probably die of a heart attack if that actually happened, haha. Or I might die of a heart attack waiting.

Although, I thought they gave out acceptances based on a "rank" of sorts; after everyone is assigned a score, the top ~100 are given acceptances, the next ~100 are given waitlists, and everyone below them is rejected. Those numbers are completely approximate (I'm hoping they actually send out more than 100 acceptances initially, but I don't know the exact number). Are you sure about the "admit score" thing? Not that it really changes much, but I guess the rank system would make it seem more like you're competing against everyone else to be the best, while the "admit score" idea would make it more on you to score the best you possibly could, and in theory everyone who scored above that certain cut would be in.

Much like you, I sincerely hope those numbers are wrong, since it means only about ~10% of people are going to get accepted within the next few weeks. Also, it would mean their yield can't be below 50%, and is close enough to 100% that they would bother not overaccepting. 😕

Eduers and USNews states that Duke accepts about 200 people or a few less. This includes the waitlist. I would assume that Dukes initial acceptances will be around 150-170. I am pretty sure they have minimal waitlist movement.....so that would cover the remaining 30-50 difference in seats.

Again, total speculation.....based on these numbers: 5309 applied, 739 interviewed, 196 were accepted, 101 enrolled. (Eduers.com)

Okay.....I need to step away from SDN....backing away slowly.....

yeah, numbers like that make me feel like there's no chance! the people in my interview group were all exceptional and very cool people, it is hard to think about outscoring 70-75% of them.

at least i can mentally prepare myself for that, though 😉

If you made it to the interview then you have something to offer....don't sell yourself too short. Good luck. :luck:

I thought you were backing away from SDN, LIDO... :laugh:. This thread has become like crack...these decisions need to hurry up and come out so I can actually get work done at work. Ok back to work now...
 
Probably a LOI is useless, unless you can combine it with a significant update of your activities that would influence your application. For example, if you had a manuscript accepted or won a significant award or something.

For the Duke people on this thread, feel free to share your insight.
 
I know for a fact that they don't like LOIs. I was talking with Jeanine Holland, the admissions secretary after my interview about an LOI and she showed me a big pile of them that will never be read. She strongly encouraged me not to send one. They assume if you haven't withdrawn you are interested in Duke still.

I don't know, I sent an update letter earlier and got a quick response thanking me and saying it would be added to my file. Maybe LOIs are different, so I'm not 100% sure, but it also might be the difference if you send it to the general address via snail mail or if you actually email it in.

They never replied to my update email, but they did confirm that it was added to my file when I called.

have we figured out whether its snail mail ,email etc ?
 
Now let's see if Duke sticks to that date. Last year they delayed and everybody frieked out on the forum. Zen thoughts 🙂. G/L. :luck:
 
I might be getting really paranoid, but did anyone ever receive confirmation that letters of recommendation were received? Mine were sent a month before my interview, but I don't remember getting a confirmation...

ms holland confirmed with us that all of our letters were received on our interview day.
 
ahhhhhhhhhh I really hope I don't see an email from Duke in my inbox..I hate knowing before I even read it...I wish the responses were given out in the same way

Personally, I'm preparing myself for an email. And I'm not gonna get excited until (unless) there's a letter in my mailbox. None of this "I didn't get an email, so I'm in!!" bull-crap for me.

I'd like to think I can do that, but I know I won't be able to help myself from getting my hopes up if I don't get the email.

Apparently from last year's thread some people waited for days for the email? That doesn't really seem plausible with a vaguely decent mail server - I sure hope they aren't sending multiple waves of them! I mean, it shouldn't be that hard to send 600 emails..

Same for me, I'm gonna be excited for sure, but not counting my acceptances till they hatch into envelopes. 🙂

I wanted to post and say how proud I am of all of you. The neuroticism has been greatly reduced since a couple weeks ago. It seems as though this is the calm before the storm in which applicants enter a zombified state as an adaptation mechanism to prevent potential fatal neurotoxic effects.

On a side note, I am proposing that someone use any neuroticism they have left to begin a hunger strike on March 8th outside of Duke hospital until every candidate is actually notified of their decision. The tragedy of last year should be prevented at all costs as the Neurotic Premed is a delicate breed.

I second this. Perhaps more-or-less a Krzyzewskiville-like mob that refuses to end its hunger strike until all students taking part are admitted.

In fact, I think being able to spell Coach K's name correctly should be enough for an offer of admittance.
 
Heck, I think being able to pronounce Coach K's name correctly should get you in. Couple that with an inherent dislike of UNC, and you're a lock for a spot in the class.
 
i honestly don't understand how a fan of basketball can enjoy duke bball. that stuff makes me cringe man.

over/under sweet 16 for the blue devils this year?
 
Coach K is awesome but Duke has majorly underperformed in the recent tourney runs. They're always the first high seed to drop out.
 
I mean Coach K is up there in the top, but I'm in a town that's very much about professional basketball and from that perspective, he has done a pretty mediocre job of producing NBA talent given the # of players that would easily come to Duke. I think if you are given that much media attention, you should do a little more to highlight players.

You can say Cal is dirty and all but the guy does a great job of marketing young talent to the NBA consumers + he goes pretty far in the march madness. If you have limited attention span to college bball (but still enjoy a good game), his teams are pretty fun to watch and you can actually follow their players to the NBA draft and then be a fan of them throughout their professional careers. It makes it lot easier on the fan.

I know Coach K is trying to recruit 4 year players and get people to graduate and all, but you can question his recent success. I don't root for UNC at all, but I think Roy has a good balance of keeping his players and sending some to the NBA - that team will be great next year.

With that said, Duke has had a great year so far.

Dude this argument is lame and overused. Duke is tied with UCLA with most players on NBA rosters in 2009-2010 (http://www.rpiratings.com/NBA.html). This is not a new development, either, they've been either 1st or 2nd for several years running. If your argument is that Coach K doesn't "highlight" the players enough to get them into the NBA, I think you're wrong.

I second that. Coach K is a class act, all around. Scum like Calipari of Kentucky could certainly learn a thing or two from the man, about life and about coaching basketball.

I'm not really in a zombified state, I'm just momentarily stunned that Duke could not make a decision by March 1.

As a Jayhawk fan for my entire life, I have to dislike Roy Traitor Williams with all my heart and soul. Therefore, by default, I am a Duke fan. And Coach K has coached the Olympics, and is a classy person, unlike Roy or Calipari. If I get into Duke, I will be one of those Cameron Crazies ESPN likes to talk about all the time. You know, in all my spare time as a med student.

The great thing about Duke...there is plenty of time 3rd and 4th years to go to games 🙂

I think Roy is a great coach and has out-recruited Coach K the past few years, as much as I hate to admit it. But at least K doesn't cry whenever we lose and even put Haiti in the same discussion as this basketball season to his massage therapist 😕
 
In all the neuroticism on SDN, the first time I've been compelled to speak. Coach Kryzyzezwzskzeiz is Americanized for Chauchescu. He breeds young boys to be over confident, mostly arrogant, marginally talented cry-babies. He manages to have a decent record by fondling the refs, the media (I call this the Dickie V two stroke), and anyone who looks like Christian Laetner.

most Romanians loved Chauchescu. Coach Kay is exceptionally good at this charade...which is irksome.

Not sure if this has been brought up... does anyone know when/if Duke is planning a revisit weekend? Any current med students hear tentative dates?

are you gonna give up kansas basketball to be a duke fan? c'mon you guys have a strong team and another title run this year. how is that any different from what roy did?
