Duke has much more in the way of attractive guys, undergrad and grad/prof school. Just sayin

Hahaha. False.
Law school - mostly ugly
Business school - less ugly than law school but not great
Grad school - less ugly than business school but still not great
Undergrad - too young.
Residents - mostly married

The nursing school is almost 100% female, and the PT and PA schools are also mostly female. You will interact with a lot more female grad students than male grad students, unless you go out of your way to attend law school or business school functions. And most male med students find it acceptable to date undergrads, but most female med students do not, which opens up a whole other set of possibilities. Therefore, one would predict that the men would have better luck than the women.

That's generally true for all school, not just for Duke.

Ok well I didn't know that you had such high standards. And I'm not sure if you are equating being old with being ugly. Anyways, Duke is a relatively small, selective, private school; if you want the absolute most attractive people, don't go to a school like that.

Just to reassure people, I have actually met a number of very good looking Duke med and grad students (male and female). Are they the norm? Maybe not, but they ARE there. I would say the undergrad guys actually hold their own against many other universities, if you like the jock/frat type (sure, I would date one, for fun).

No, I am not equating being old with ugly, although I'm not sure what your definition of "old" is, considering a lot of the grad students here are in their mid to late 20s, which I don't think is old.

The problem is not that Duke is a small, selective private school. As stated, the majority of top med schools are going to be similar. The problem is that Duke is in a small town and if you can't find someone you're interested in at Duke, then you're not going to have much luck, because the townies are likely not going to be up your alley. Durham is not NY, LA, SF, Boston or even Philly. I would equate it more along the lines of New Haven or some other college town. The university is the only game in town. In addition, it seems that many of the people at Duke come from the south or midwest, where getting married at age 21-23 is significantly more common than in the west or northeast, limiting the number of single people in the grad school age range.

Fortunately, I came to medical school for an education, not a husband.

offtopic, but philly is so much more better than boston (and much - 3 times - bigger, people usually don't know this for some reason)

anyway, girls at chapel hill are pretty cute. some duke girls aren't that bad

Mr. Williams reports that result of the disparity is that women feel greater pressure to find and hold onto an available male, as described by Kate Andrew, a senior at the University of North Carolina, and her friends.
"My parents think there is something wrong with me because I don't have a boyfriend, and I don't hang out with a lot of guys," said Ms. Andrew, who had a large circle of male friends in high school.
Jayne Dallas, a senior studying advertising who was seated across the table, grumbled that the population of male undergraduates was even smaller when you looked at it as a dating pool. "Out of that 40 percent, there are maybe 20 percent that we would consider, and out of those 20, 10 have girlfriends, so all the girls are fighting over that other 10 percent," she said.

Many women, like Kelly Lynch, a junior at North Carolina, told Mr. Williams that the competition for men can get fierce.
"A lot of my friends will meet someone and go home for the night and just hope for the best the next morning," Ms. Lynch said. "They'll text them and say: ‘I had a great time. Want to hang out next week?' And they don't respond."
Even worse, "Girls feel pressured to do more than they're comfortable with, to lock it down," Ms. Lynch said.

I find people in bars to be really approachable there too

hmm you guys are misconceived, on my visit i thought only the prettiest got into Duke. Not just beautiful  but very cordial as one helped me with directions as we were driving side by side right down Erwin... and then when i came to the med school saw more than my share of 😀😀

now i'm praying harder to get an acceptance 😉

Sorry if this has been talked about, I don't follow the thread very often...
I just talked to admissions and they said it was ok to send an update, but I forgot to ask when it should be there by to be included in the adcom's decision.

So does anyone know when the adcom meets?

fail thread.

Maybe the entering class of mstaco. diosa. caramba... are just soooo hawwwt XD

^yeah. usually girls that get mad and complain about "frat-boy misogynist" on anonymous forums are usually the ones that nobody hits on 🙁

i sure hope (for them) that they are the outliers tho😀

Is this discussion really happening? these are the future doctors of america... frat boy pigs... and bannie, i'm a guy... not all guys are red-state jocky meatheads...

I don't care if you call me hawwwt but I would very much like to be in this entering class 🙂)))

While I disagree with SwineSue's indictment of your attitudes, I don't think this is the proper channel to discuss this stuff, guys. Leave the "guy conversations" for Facebook chat and the bars. This thread is for discussing applying to Duke.

Whoo hoo, Im in the entering class, and I'm hawt?? This is my lucky day...thanks guys!

This thread is ridiculous.

I really didn't notice it being bad at all (I'm a guy). However, I did study engineering, where there aren't really many girls, let alone many attractive girls, so maybe my standards are totally ruined.

Anyway, I almost feel bad for interrupting this conversation, but I hear they're going to take a look at our files sometime in the middle of this month and take into consideration any updates sent. Can anyone confirm this, and in that case, does that mean we should be sending all our updates really soon?

Hey I have a follow up question, i can't remember if they said email the updates to Mr. Wallace or whom at Duke?? Any clues guys??

hmm, i guess we have different reasons for going to grad school, jk
hard to find another man to marry, or even a place that it's legal, lol

I don't actually know the answer to this...I just wanted to point out that the real Duke application questions are currently being ignored in favor of our frat boy discussion.

I sent the update to Dean Wallace directly. He responded quickly and said it was added to my file. Hope that helps!

Hmm...I'd like to jump on this update bandwagon. Quick question though...I've been doing research this year and I have a lot of "irons in the fire," as my boss would put it, but nothing quite published yet. I'm third author on an invited review that's been sorta pre-approved, so I know that will go to press soon, second author on a paper that will be ready for submission in about a month, and kinda random author on several more big projects that aren't ready for publication. Are any of those worth updating? My amcas didn't even include this job, but I talked about it in my interview. I am not really even going for the "wow-factor" of a publication--I know none of those are really wow-factor anyways...would just like to show that Ive at least been productive in this job, esp since Duke is such a research focused school. Thoughts?

Look, at this point there isn't a whole lot you can do to gain admission to Duke. Applications are in, interviews are done, your application has probably been ranked already. So what we are doing is focusing on the next step - should I do to Duke if admitted? And the environment at Duke is key to making that decision, including the fauna. I for one, want to know what the chick-a-dees are like at a school. So chill out.

To answer your research question, I would probably say no, you shouldn't say you have a good chance for a publication. Frankly, anyone can say (and way too many people genuinely think), that they have a Nature or Science paper in the works. I don't think a manuscript, unless it's at least in revision, is worth bringing up. That's just me though.

Fair enough. Maybe if I send my semi-worthless update I'll annoy them and you won't have to worry about one chick-a-dee at your school...or maybe you'll be missing out on some pretty fauna 😛

And I believe we were discussing whether there, is, in fact, anything we can do to up our chances of getting in...since FluffyRabbit mentioned they *might* be accepting updates right now...seems to be a worthwhile discussion, at least more-so than a hypothetical discussion about what the girls look like at a school that you haven't gotten into yet 🙄

For the record, I like chick-a-dees.

I had the same thought as you, and I came to the conclusion that it wouldn't do much good if I said "I will have some more really awesome publications...soon".

Isn't the stereotype that the pretty girls go to UNC and the ugly chicks go to Duke?

And that Duke girls are usually overweight soccer-mom types that always come from New Jersey? Haha

Its all over the internet what people think of Duke girls, generally speaking.

Still, I'm sure they end up being great doctors.

Look what I started. 😛

White girls wont pick a yellow guy, so I dun care if the girls @Duke are really that cute or not afterall.🙄

But, but... what about the yellow girls @Duke? 😀

Actually, shouldn't I wait until March before deciding whether I even want to waste my time thinking about this silly topic?

In terms of yellow girls, I guess you cant beat those in the westcoast?😛j/k

You know what, its a great way to kill some time while waiting March to come.

Congratulations on your UCLA acceptance anyway. 🙂 Good luck to all of us, and hopefully you'll have some difficult decisions soon!

No yellow girls at Duke? 🙁

Then I guess I'm going elsewhere then.

Why are you going to Duke if you have UCLA? =(

Oye. I leave this forum for a day and its already out of control. There's no stopping it until a week or so after admissions decisions are sent out. Remember guys, think NEGATIVE thoughts. No chance any of us are getting in. No reason to even THINK about Duke. In fact, I'm going to do myself a favor an post my future admissions status already so that I won't even be tempted to consider any hope.

[Rejected 🙁. Good luck to all you other fine applicants 👍]

Now that you've turned it back all serious and stuff 🙁, where do we submit our updates again?

Good lord, you got into UCLA and you are talking about Duke girls? Are you mad? UCLA is known more for it's women than anything else, including its medical school. I really hope I get into UCLA too, I loved the fauna and flora over there. Duke has even better flora, not so good fauna.

As for your other comment, just remember white girls won't go for a yellow guy as their first choice. You are not out of consideration just because you are yellow. You can do it!

all this talk of technicolor girls made me think of this song:

First time I see the vid/band though...they need to ease up on the eyeliner lol

Why is it mysogynistic to say that these chicks are ugly? They are.

They're probably very smart too and probably nice. BUT they are ugly.

That couldn't be further from the truth...the gym is always packed.

Duke girls = brown region?

Actually, I could live with the Annoying one. Girls don't have to be nice for me to like them.

She could come at me with a huge knife wanting to kill me and I probably wouldn't care much if she was smart and hot.

Lol. Slightly more than 2 weeks left.
Just get it over with.
This wait thing is killing my life. Honestly.
