2009-2010 Grad School Interview Invite Thread!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Is it rude to retract your acceptance of an interview? For instance, if you get accepted to your first choice and you already have interviews scheduled elsewhere, would it be okay to contact the schools where you have interviews and explain the situation? If so, how would you go about doing this?

I would rather have someone else have an opportunity to interview if I do not plan on going to that school. Hope this makes sense!

Wait, I just want to clarify, do you have an ADMISSION offer from your preferred school or an INTERVIEW offer? Because unless your top choice school has offered you admission I would do everything in your power to interview at both. Don't count your eggs before they hatch.

But I agree with Cara Susanna, unless you know there is no chance you will go to the school, I would interview there either way.

Anyone know if Ryerson or York (Toronto, Canada) has sent out any interview requests or when they were sent out last year?

Thanks!

The link on the first page gives out dates from last year.

I checked the page with last years dates, however Ryerson and York aren't listed.

It sounds like most of y'all are waiting to hear from PhD programs. Has anyone gotten interview invitations from any PsyD programs? In particular, Baylor, GWU, Rutgers, or Argosy Atlanta??

Thanks for any info and best of luck!

It is a formal admission offer. I would not decline other interviews if I did not have a definitive admission offer.

This is my top choice in terms of location, funding, and match of research interests. Therefore, any other interviews would not sway my decision. I applied to other schools just in case I did not get into my first choice (the one I have been referring to). As others have mentioned in this thread, there are others vying for those interview slots so I would rather free up that spot for them.

Wow, accepted into your top choice already? Congrats! Did you interview there and like it as much in person as on paper?

After this morning's updates, I decided to email the program assistant at Yale and this was her response:

"Actually we never hold in person interviews. Invites will start by the end of next week. The only date you might need to hold is March 1st, which is the visiting day for invited applicants.
good luck."

Good to know 🙂

i'm confused -- haven't some invites already gone out? and if they don't have in person interviews, what is the purpose of the visiting day? is it just to help applicants decide if they want to attend (and is the assumption that you've already been admited at that point)?

thanks so much for posting this info!

So are the Yale 'invites' being sent out admission invites?? Interview info is stressful enough, I don't know if I can handle the wait for admission info!! 😛

I think they do phone interviews so that may be what the invites are for.

Thanks for the congrats. I already knew the program very well because they had a prospective student day where I met with each faculty member and current grad students. I definitely had a different view of the program after going there in person.

I'm still slightly confused as well. The question that I posed was that I heard that Yale is only doing phone interviews with no in-person interviews. She said that is accurate and didn't correct me. Therefore I'm assuming that they hold phone interviews. I'm guessing that the visit day is for people who are accepted after phone interviews.

I know that at least one person received an invite already, but their POI must just be early.

Speaking oh which, if you are the person who received the invite, could you please PM me your POI? Thanks!

Wow, congrats! I didn't think offers had been made yet either. In that case, just contact the people at the other programs and inform them of your acceptance and decision. Just call whoever extended you the interview (your POI, the DCT, etc.) and tell them that you have accepted an offer elsewhere and would like to decline your interview. If they press you for more information (which they likely won't) I would frame it as you don't want to waste their time and money and (as you said) would like to free up the spot for another applicant. They may or may not actually invite anyone else to interview, but that's none of your concern (this is a selfish process, unfortunately).

Just heard from the Departmental Secretary at Northwestern - Feinberg School of Medicine, asking me to e-mail a copy of my CV. This is after hearing from her last week, letting me know that one of my letters of recommendation wasn't printing out properly, and requesting that I have the recommender resend it in a different format. (Got it resubmitted ASAP, of course) I figure the fact that someone over there wants additional information can't be a BAD sign at this point in the process, no?

Trying not to get my hopes up too much, but failing somewhat miserably. No invites yet (though most of my schools haven't started sending invites). This would be a BIG one.

hmmmmmmmmmmmm is this the same world class medical school? I joke, but seriously, schools that are organized and on top of their game compared to schools that lose things and mess things up is an interesting dynamic... makes you wonder how the rest of your time at such a program would be? Not to diss on NW Feinberg, but I wonder if their reputation precedes them because of the med school, but might not necessarily reflect the quality of their psych program...

I actually question this about a lot of schools that have the "big names"

I have been holding on to the edge of my seat about Temple for about 2 weeks. I've suspended scheduling my flight to another interview in waiting for a possible (holding breath) multi-flight...I think that the last update was yesterday...Could those who received an invite please send me a message to let me know their POI, if you feel comfortable doing so? Thank you!!

You're not alone in the Temple waiting game - rumor has it they aren't completely finished with invites. The suspense is killing me.

Has anyone heard from University of Connecticut or University of Mass, Amherst regarding their School Psychology programs?

If so, please reply.

Thank you very much!

Well, I don't think that one person's lack of organization or technological ineptitude should reflect badly on the research that a program's faculty are doing, or a the ability to provide great graduate education. Though it's certainly worth asking current students about if you get an interview.

Hi Everyone --

Also I saw that someone asked about BU -- I know they met yesterday (insider's tip) so I'm sure they'll start contacting people within the next few days (someone else said the 25th?). Crossing fingers!

Not to make anyone nervous - but I just found out that my coworker got an interview invite to BU today. I don't have more info. than that.

i totally agree. i have a friend in the program at feinberg and she has only wonderful things to say about it.

So I see that the rummer is the University of Vermont looked at aps yesterday, and I saw one person got a response today. Has anyone else? Also how long should I wait before giving up hope on that school? Its my favorit so im very nervus.

Also has anyone recently heard from Penn State? I know they send out some invitations a week ago, but it looks like there interview day is in late Feb. Are people still getting invites.

Also, does anyone know why Suny Stony Brook send out invites to interviews three days after their application deadline? Were they doing a rollling admintions type thing? Or could they really have looked at all their aps in three days?

I have a friend who works there and said to not expect them before February believe it or not.

I don't think that was disorganization... better that they ask for a new copy than just decide to not review the app because it's missing a LOR like a lot of schools do.

The professors individually looked at applications so some got to them faster than others.

Wondering if any current graduate students have insight into this predicament:

I submitted an app for a clinical phd program and in retrospect decided there was another faculty member with whom I would enjoy working so I contacted them to introduce myself and let them know I was interested in their research. This faculty member has responded and said they would look out for my app, but what do you think their reaction will be when they see their name isn't mentioned in my statement?

I'm also wondering about Penn State. I called yesterday and asked one of the graduate coordinator people about it and she said they were still looking at applications and she hadn't heard that they'd given out any interview invites yet, but I know there's been a couple on here that have gotten invites.

Does anyone else get really excited by the weekly email updates from Duke, only to realize they're just letting you know that your application is STILL complete?

That's happened to me twice, and I've just asked the initial POI if they had any collaborative efforts with that faculty member, and then they responded and suggested I contact them as well. I put both members in my personal statement both times though. I wasn't sure if that had affected me negatively, but now I have interviews at both so I can't complain. I think it's best to be honest up front about that kind of thing. Really good question though, and I grappled with it for like two days before finally shooting an email of interest. It feels like i'm grappling with everything like that these days though.

I have the same thing with nebraska! Today they e-mailed to say that my application was reviewed, but that I would be contacted about further info. Other people have invites here, and other people have been rejected! I'm am in some weird limbo! Ugh!! I have a feeling this is going to be a really long couple of months!!! :scared:

Can the lucky ladies and gents who got Harvard invites shoot me a PM with who from? I could always tell you first and you can say yay or nay if you prefer. I'm also quite mournful about the $104 application fee if it's the same person, I could really use that money now.

I also would love to know what POI(s) have issued invites from WVU...

I also have yet to hear from York or Ryerson. Although I have heard from a couple other schools.

Maybe we should start a Canadian schools thread - thoughts?

Anyone know if Ryerson or York (Toronto, Canada) has sent out any interview requests or when they were sent out last year?

Thanks!

Honestly, I was really confused (i.e. why are they sending this to me again... is something not complete now?)! I even called to check - paranoia much?

For the Canadian schools I've heard from Queen's, still waiting on Simon Fraiser, York and Ryerson. How about everyone else?

Hi everyone! Are there any reasons to currently be logging into and checking the on-line application sites at each school? Unfortunately, I discovered today that Northwestern - Evanston has posted rejections this way. 🙁 I did not see any notifications of other schools doing this on the Rejections thread. Does anybody know other schools that do or any other reasons for adding these sites to the constant rounds of email/phone/SDN monitoring?

Hi Everyone!

Just joined! I'm getting pretty nervous over here! Congrats to all who have interviews! Very exciting! 😀

Would those who were invited to the following clinical schools mind PMing me their POI? That would be helpful/stressfull! Ahh you all know how it is! I haven't heard ANYTHING YET

FSU
UVM
Penn State
UConn
UMass Amherst

Look forward to hearing from you / scared.

Okay I may not want this info, but I'm going to ask for it anyway. Could those who received an invite to Drexel and Fordham PM their POI? I heard that Drexel is reviewing apps from the 18th-25th, so I have four days to go. I'm going crazy here. Only one interview so far!

Thank you so so much!😕

Is it a bad sign if you get an invite a few weeks after a school has been posted? Am I a second tier applicant? Additionally, I am working at a pediatric hospital that this University uses as a practicum site. I "know" (ok, from word of mouth) that they bring in ~70 ppl to interview for ~7 slots during their interview process 🙂eek🙂.

Lastly, I have recently been given permission to conduct a study by a dept's Medical Director (clearly, I have a long way to go with this study, IRB submissions, etc). Would it be pushy of me to email my POI with the study proposal? Also one of the poster presentations that I made is being submitted to journals. Should I give a brief update of my progress since I submitted my app? Part of me thinks that I am freaking out & subconsciously want to irrationally contact everyone at said Uni. to stave off a rejection letter....

If I am accepted anywhere, I hope that I learn some coping skills to recover from this app/interview process. 😛

This happened to me a couple of times, and I just emailed them and said in the email that I had first overlooked them, but upon further review of the website you came across their work.

Having already sent her an email, dont worry about it much, if it is brought up (or you could casually bring it up at an interview)you could say just what I said, that you overlooked it at first but then found professor X's work and really liked it.

More matches at a program the better IMO
