2009-2010 Grad School Interview Invite Thread!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Yay! First interview invite! 🙂 Coincidentally, I was pretty much a wreck until yesterday when a 'very wise person' (i know 🙄) told me what her mentor told her; "To worry about tomorrow is to be unhappy about today". Wierdly enough, that one stuck with me and I calmed down. Cut to today, I got my first invite!! I know it was probably more coincidence than anything else but.......it still feels good 🙂

Just enjoy and utilize the wait the best you can, whatever happens will happen inevitably. Just work on your Plan B and I guess, we'll see.

Hi everyone! Are there any reasons to currently be logging into and checking the on-line application sites at each school? Unfortunately, I discovered today that Northwestern - Evanston has posted rejections this way. 🙁 I did not see any notifications of other schools doing this on the Rejections thread. Does anybody know other schools that do or any other reasons for adding these sites to the constant rounds of email/phone/SDN monitoring?

Did you find out this way because you logged in and got bad news yourself, or you've heard other people found out this way? I think there is usually an automated email telling you there's a status update - at least I think I recall that from my last time applying. If not, that's a brutal way to find out. And, I think the schools that use "ApplyYourself" have that application status update feature.

Okay I may not want this info, but I'm going to ask for it anyway. Could those who received an invite to Drexel and Fordham PM their POI? I heard that Drexel is reviewing apps from the 18th-25th, so I have four days to go. I'm going crazy here. Only one interview so far!

Thank you so so much!😕

Fordham sent out mass invites, remember this program isnt a POI based program, its about match overall... sorry 🙁

Hey! What's up with Wyoming? I thought that they weren't supposed to be reviewing apps until the end of the month and then sending out invites for a campus interview instead of the phone. Anyone have any other info??

Hi Everyone!

Just joined! I'm getting pretty nervous over here! Congrats to all who have interviews! Very exciting! 😀

Would those who were invited to the following clinical schools mind PMing me their POI? That would be helpful/stressfull! Ahh you all know how it is! I haven't heard ANYTHING YET

FSU
UVM
Penn State
UConn
UMass Amherst

Look forward to hearing from you / scared.

FSU's interviews is coming up really quick and if I remember right they sent out mass invites...

UVM was this morning, but I honestly am not sure if it was a mass invite or not, but considering my invite came from someone not my own POI, I must imagine it was a mass invite.

A note about UVM, I had said yesterday that UVM was meeting that day, and I was guessing they might release invites today or tomorrow, and it appears they have today. So although I am in no place to say for sure, I have to guess that this was a mass invite and not POI specific.

Sorry I am just full of negative news today for you all 🙁

This happened to me a couple of times, and I just emailed them and said in the email that I had first overlooked them, but upon further review of the website you came across their work.

Having already sent her an email, dont worry about it much, if it is brought up (or you could casually bring it up at an interview)you could say just what I said, that you overlooked it at first but then found professor X's work and really liked it.

More matches at a program the better IMO

I thought I was catching on to the abbreviations but would you mind telling me what IMO stands for?

I hate to tell you this, but Drexel invitations started going out 2 weeks ago.

On a better note, I got an email from my POI at Minnesota today saying he just started to review my application and will be getting back to me!!! So all you U minnesota twin-cities clinical sciences phd applicants keep your hopes up!

Congrats! I really like this quote - now I'm going to try and live by it for the next few weeks... let's see what happens 😉

Hi everyone,

I just figured I would start this thread because I'm having a hard time keeping track of Canadian school info.

I've heard from a couple schools, but am becoming more anxious with each passing day! Maybe we can post our updates here?

Best of luck! 🙂

Queen's - Invite received via email December 23rd (from POI); In-person interview January 8th
Waterloo - Invite received via email January 21st (from POI); phone interview to follow soon.

You're not alone in the Temple waiting game - rumor has it they aren't completely finished with invites. The suspense is killing me.

i'm almost sure temple is all done. they sent out confirmations of interview sessions today and the interviews are next week 😎

I got my first invite!!! PHEW!!! What a sigh of relief!😍😍😍

Hello - if at all possible - and I would understand if you are uncomfortable doing this....would those with DePaul and Harvard invites please PM me their POI....I'd greatly appreciate it. This is my first experience with any of my schools appearing on "the list" - it would give me some piece of mind.😕

Hmmm, I received this info from the graduate assistant, "you should expect to hear sometime between Jan 18 and Jan 25." Perhaps, they have waves of interviews? Yes, I will rationalize anything until I get a rejection. LOL 🙂

Hey everyone waiting on DePaul. I am waiting as well. I spoke with someone in the office today and they said they are hoping to be done extending invites on Monday, 1/25/10. So...don't give up hope. There are still 2 more days! 🙂

Thanks 🙂 and that's exactly what I thought! Especially at a time like this, it just hit me like a ton of bricks; she's right. Maybe because we were standing under a tree at night and she looked like a ninja when she said it but, it resonates. No need being constantly miserable, schedule that for when, if ever, you get the bad news. But hopefully, it won't come to that, haha.

Can those of you who have heard from Oregon (clinical) please pm me your POIs? It would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Drexel is still reviewing apps and giving invites. I think that they do it by POI or research group, so some started early and some are on the later end. Hang in there! 🙂

Concordia - Invites/rejections for interview received January 11-15 (from particular POI). Interviews arranged by individual professors.

* I was actually rejected by this POI only but not from another POI or the department.

I was reading the old thread, I think a lot of them wait to see if people actually manage to get their CIHR/SSHRC/NSERC grants forwarded to Ottawa. I agree, it's anxiety-provoking.

I will take that as good news! Thank you so much! I'm safe another day. Pheww!

Ugh, really? I applied to CIHR, but I was totally banking on OGS rather than CIHR.

Hi Multicultpsyc, thanks for the info. Do you know if this statement applies to both the clinical-child and clinical-community tracks, or just to the clinical-child track?

I'll split this into Clinical PhD, Clinical PsyD, Counseling Psych, School Psych, and Combined sections. There's also a "non-applied" (social, developmental, experimental, etc.) section. Good luck to everyone! :luck:

MOD NOTE: I moved over a thread about Canadian apps, and I was hoping you can add the above schools to your list (if they aren't there already). -t4c

hmm but the person received a mailed letter? once they mail letters isnt that kinda it for the first round of invites to a school?

Correct - received letter via snail mail from the department. Granted, had already received an electronic copy of the letter from POI when invited to interview (via email).

BTW last day to confirm you will attend FSU interview is the 29th of Jan. So still some slim chance someone could turn it down and they invite others. That being said, my POI had us confirm via e-mail response originally; the 29th deadline is more for making arrangements. Because the interview is so close, unless something unexpected comes up for people - chance of more invites are getting low.

Updated! Congrats to all, especially the U Kansas child people as you may be meeting my awesome co-RA there! 🙂

To those of you wondering why you didn't get my customary congrats reply, my inbox was being incredibly slow. If I missed your invite, please PM me again.

Actually, I applied to the clinical-community track. However, I didn't ask about tracks and just asked about clinical invites. So, I have no idea, but I'd say it's safe to say that invites for both tracks are still going out. Good luck! 🙂

Could the lucky person who got a Washington (Saint Louis) invite PM me the POI! Thanks in advance :luck:

could the individuals with wash state interviews pm me their POIs

yesterday i had a washington state call, but was too nervous to pick up....whoever it was, did not leave a message 🙁

Can the IIT people pm their poi's?

Thanks and congrats!

I second this request. I don't understand how they've already made their decisions; applications were due less than a week ago!

Congratulations to the lucky and talented invitee. 🙂

Would the IIT invitee(s) allow me to privately disclose my POI so as to tell me if we identified the same professor(s)?

Wondering if any current graduate students have insight into this predicament:

I submitted an app for a clinical phd program and in retrospect decided there was another faculty member with whom I would enjoy working so I contacted them to introduce myself and let them know I was interested in their research. This faculty member has responded and said they would look out for my app, but what do you think their reaction will be when they see their name isn't mentioned in my statement?

I'll field this one. I did not contact my advisor prior to applying last year (I'm a first year), I had contacted another faculty member at my program. However, I did list him (my advisor) in my personal statement. Turns out he was a better match for me than the person I had contacted ahead of time and my program was able to figure this out prior to the interview. In my experience, this seems to be the case. If you were honest and accurate in your personal statement, the powers that be will make sure your application ends up in the right hands. However, if your research interests have shifted since you wrote the statement, that could be another issue...

But since you brought it to his attention, I think you're in good shape. I certainly don't think he'll be offended.

He/She is saying that they did NOT mention this new persons name in the personal statement, and found out about them AFTER already submitting everything...

Like I said in my previous answer, IF oyu get the interview you can explain it then... if it even comes up.

I know, but no one (who's in grad school, which is what the poster was asking for) had responded and I figured I had the most similar experience. And if you read my response you'd see that I said it would likely be forwarded on anyway. Most programs will invite you out to interview with a particular person so it's NOT a good idea to wait until the interview lest you stir the waters and the faculty member who invited you out gets ticked.

Hello! Sorry if this is posted somewhere already, but I just have to ask. What do the acronyms "POI" and "DCT" mean?

Congrats to the person who heard back from Boston College. I'm biting my nails on that one as it is one of my top choices. I hope to get that call tomorrow!!

UCSB interview is tomorrow. Trying to stay relaxed over it! =)

I would agree - plus, schedules for interviews are made before you get there, so if your personal statement says X and now you think you'd like to meet with Y, it's a good idea to let Y know ahead of time that you are interested in both X and Y, so that you get on both of their schedules.

Although, if X and Y do similar work or collaborate, your application was probably forwarded to both of them and you'll be fine.
