2009-2010 Grad School Interview Invite Thread!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Is hope lost for people who did not hear from a school that is listed? Or do invites come out over the course of a week or so? I am also interested in who the POI is for for the University of Vermont people. Congratulates on the invite though!

Hope is not lost -- I've been proof of that twice over this year already!

It depends entirely on the school. Usually if people heard from someone other than directly their POI, it means they all went out at once, though that's not ALWAYS true. I would say your odds are significantly reduced if it's been a week or 2 since people got invited AND the invites were sent from a central person, like a DCT or graduate secretary (not individual POI).

However, if people have heard directly from their POI, all bets are off unless the POI mentions something specific about how other people are getting invites (e.g., all this week, scattered, etc.). Some schools just let the POIs do it as they decide. Most schools do generally give you at LEAST 2 weeks notice on the interview, if not an entire month, so if the interview is less than 2 weeks away, the odds are low.

That's just my opinion on the whole thing.

Hey Everyone -- I just started an Acceptance & Waitlist thread for 2010! Good luck everyone!

I've also heard that there can be a second wave of interviews i.e. if they did not have enough people they liked on the first round (I assume those odds would be low). And as we get later into the season, there may be interviews/ acceptances from schools who have extended invites/ acceptances earlier and have been turned down. I have seen many people on here get accepted off an unofficial or official wait list. So I wouldn't give up hope entirely.

I know it is hard not to feel defeated but if you can, prepare for/ assume the worst but still hope for the best.

Their committee usually meets on a Tuesday, and probably next week. Historically, their interviews are a Thursday-Saturday thing during the first full week of February.

Thanks for the info. Do you work there? Or is this info extrapolated from previous years? I'm particularly interested to know how you know when the faculty meets

Yeah I am guessing this is why they dont send as many "rect" letters as say med school does... they want to keep their options open? Just a guess though

I totally made it up.

In all seriousness, I know someone who was on the admissions committee for two years.

Just to directly address your Vermont question, who knows with those guys... two POIs are doing pre-screen interviews, but those arent official interviews because they havent released an official interview date. Someone else was told the committee is meeting next week (20th) so that is when they will make final decisions.

Based on last year this date makes sense, this is a direct quote from the interview thread of last year:

"University of Vermont - email from head of admissions on 1/21, interview on 2/27"

So the time course follows, remember some POIs might just be trying to decide on their couple of interviewess etc, you just dont know until you get that letter saying you will not be receiving an interview invite.

I think that is definitely the case. Unless there is no way they would ever admit you- I think they tend to keep you in the maybe pile.

I received an invite from Yeshiva University from an admissions secretary. The e-mail says I have an individual interview with a faculty member on 2/1 and it gives the name of the faculty member but it is not one of the POIs that I indicated on my application. Does that mean they are matching me with someone else or is your individual interview routinely with a faculty member other than your POI??

It doesn't look like anyone responeded yet, so I'll throw in what I know:

Sometimes, the faculty might be interested in you as a student, but for whatever reasons think another POI is a better fit (either due to funding or research interests). Maybe this POI is going in a different direction or believes s/he could use your past experience in the lab.

I think people usually get interviews with their POI, but your case is not exactly rare. It happened to me a few years ago. Often, you meet with several POIs anyway. Maybe you will get the chance to interview with both while you're there.

If you're worried, you could always verify the information with the school. I might steer away from this though b/c it could make you look like you aren't too excited about the POI they set you up with (but that's just me being overly cautious).

Has anyone heard anything from Emory yet? I'm getting anxious as their contact date for last year's interview invites was 1/11. Thanks!

Hey--I'm new here. I got an email and phone calls yesterday (1/12) from Penn State telling me they want me to interview 2/19-2/20.

Some of my other schools are on the list posted above and I'm nervous. ETS screwed up sending my GRE Psych scores, and I'm worried that killed my chances at a bunch of schools because they might have just received the scores last week (I saw U mass Boston only posted mine on the 11th....) Do you think I can still get an interview?

Also, for anyone interested-- Eastern Michigan U said they would alert you if you receive an interview tomorrow (1/14) night. Good luck!!

Eeeek, another Penn State interview! Congrats nonetheless! Would you mind pm'ing your POI? Thanks!

Just an FYI - I was on the UVM website earlier today and found that clinical applicant interviews are slated for 2/12 this year. http://www.uvm.edu/psychology/?Page=dept_calendar.html:xf:

Starting to freak from having heard nothing, good or bad...

Anyone know anything about Boston University, University of Virginia, or Fordham?

Thanks! :luck:

Could the people with invites to Florida State, Ohio State, U Miami, and Vermont please PM me their POI if they're comfortable, Thanks!

In regards to Boston University, I received the following email about interview invites:

"Interview invitation will begin going out during the week of January 25th. We expect to have all go out (by phone) by the end of the month."

This at least helped relieve some of my anxiety for the this week and next, hope it helps you too!

Ugh, now I'm concerned because I didn't receive an information from the school :scared:

Wow, this is torture 🙄...So far I have been officially rejected from Oklahoma State.
Now I see that Michigan State and U of VM already sent out interviews...
This really sucks.
I knew it wouldn't be an easy process, but I didn't expect it to be so anxiety inducing 😱

please either post to the rejection thread or pm me with the details of the notice you received from Oklahoma State so that I can update the rejection thread accordingly (and sorry to hear it)!

So you should investigate last few years threads, next week is when it is expected that the clinical director from Fordham will send out a mass email invite... so be patient 🙂 we should know for sure next week

Anyone hear from GWU Psyd today? Just wondering if they extended any additional interviews today. Thanks! 🙂

So I did not get an invite to UCSB, but saw that at least one rejection email went out on Monday. Does that mean I'm in the dreaded "maybe" pile? Do I have any chance if so?

I definitely checked my email about 150 times today... no news on any of my ten schools! And had something close to a panic attack since our futures are COMPLETELY out of our control at this point... good luck everyone!

You guys should read last year's waitlist thread - it could be inspiring to see how many were accepted at the last minute after hearing nothing. I was especially encouraged by cara susanna.

I'll take a gander, if you have a link, post that too. *off to search*

Ahh, my near mental breakdown. Good times, good times.

Btw, I didn't get my first interview invite until late January or early February.

Rumor has it that UCLA will meet on 2/21 to make final decisions on who to invite, with interviews to occur on 2/5 & 2/6. Not sure how reliable this is, but next Friday could be a very interesting day....

Many people got in after being waitlisted, but the first hurdle is getting the interview...so far nothin'

Sometimes getting an interview isn't necessary. I know of people who have been accepted after not even interviewing. It is rare, but it does happen. Sometimes a POI may not be happy with the people he/she interviewed and then accepts someone else.

I didn't get an invite OR a rejection either... which program did you look at? I noticed the rejection was for school, and I applied for counseling...

Thanks for posting the link. Though I must admit I'm torn on whether it calms my nerves.

What is everyone doing while their waiting?? (I mean BESIDES checking your email, phone, and this site every few minutes)

:luck:

Sitting at work all day doesn't really help to whole "not checking every five seconds" thing. When I go home I just (try to) relax, hang out with friends, work out, etc.

By the way, it really sucks when you get e-mails on your phone and every time it vibrates you think it might be an invite. I get disappointed about 25 times a day 😀

Quick question...when is the "list" updated and how frequently? Thanks in advance 🙄

I didn't get one either. This is actually making me feel a little better.

Sorry for the confusion everyone. In my attempt to quickly post that message I failed to carefully consider my wording and explanation of the email.

The message I quoted was sent in response to an email I sent regarding interviews, so no one else would have received it.

Sorry again!

Hello!

Like the rest of you, I'm currently in the boat of waiting to hear back from grad schools (doctoral counseling psych programs to be exact). I just found this forum and thought it was very informative and decided to join.

I have an interview for UCSB on the 22nd, and I'm very excited. Good luck everyone! 🙂

Could the person with the invite to American please PM me your POI? Thanks!

I know this is asking a lot, but could the lucky person who was invited to interview on 2/1 at USC post here or PM me with more info about that? Did the invite come from your POI? Is this an official interview weekend? (Seems like it since there is a grad student reception the day before.) Did you already do a phone interview?

Did anyone hear from the schools below?

Boston
Fordham
Yale
Penn
Yeshiva
Columbia

😕😕😕

Hi, can the person who received the USC invite send me a pm regarding who's their POI? I would be extremely grateful! If you don't feel comfortable with that, can I at least tell you my POI and you can just tell me if it's that one? Thanks.

I applied for the CCSP program - specifically, clinical...

Same here!! And when my one invite called, I didn't even have my phone on me...
