2009-2010 Grad School Interview Invite Thread!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Has anyone heard from the counseling psych phd program at University of Maryland?

I have a friend who goes to Maryland (she is in counseling Ph.D). She thinks that they have already finished phone interviewing candidates. This year, they do phone interviews first and then invite for in-person. I saw the post from the gradcafe who received phone interview invite on Feb 4. I did not get either. This year's competition rate is higher than ever before.

Any news about Purdue Clinical? I noticed that on the first page it states interviews were given, BUT I spoke with my POI about 3 weeks ago (I guess in what you could consider a phone interview) and they were still trying to figure out if they were going to have people come out.

Purdue's clinical interviews were on Friday (2/12).

I am a newbie, so if this was discussed elsewhere, I apologize! Still trying to figure out how to best use the search engine...
Ok, my question is that I received an interview invite for Adelphi's PhD clinical psych program and I wanted to know if anyone out there knows what they do for it. I was told Adelphi drops you all in a room and watch you interact. Is this true??? :scared: Any tips on succeeding in this interview?
thanks all in advance!

Quote removed.

There is a very fine line between being excited and wanting to share your excitement and bragging. I think you have crossed that line. . . . Everyone on this forum knows how successful you have been, and I am incredibly happy for you. But, IMO this post of yours just pours salt on the wounds of those who have not received any invites.

In a prior email, a while back, you wrote: "And do you all think it's off-putting/arrogant or me to post my number of invites? I really would hate for it to seem that way! 😳"

I totally disagree. The whole point of this forum is to share our experiences: the good, the bad, and the ugly. I'm excited for her (him??), and think that if you are not able to share in the happiness of others, as well as commensurate with those not as lucky, then maybe you shouldn't open this thread. That's just my two cents! 🙄

Like I said in my post, it is just MY opinion. I know that others will disagree. . . . I would not have made my opinion known, if she hadn't asked for our thoughts in one of her previous posts.

But, I also don't like censorship, and I certainly did not mean for futureapppsy2 to remove her post. Again, it was just MY opinion, and I am sure that many other people on this board would have agreed with ygolohcysp rather than me.

@happyinpsych, it is understandable where you are coming from. It is not condoned, but it is understandable. Everyone has the right to be bitter every now and then.

@futureapppsych, you did NOT have to take down the post. Out of everyone on this forum, one person voiced discontent. It was bound to happen sooner or later but just know that majority of us here are majorly rooting for you :luck:

just sayin'.

Seriously, you are the gold medal Olympian of the forum. I like getting your updates and though I may like to imagine having what it takes to be in your spot on the podium, I know who I am even though I may not know where I'm going.

Does anyone know when Ferkauf sends out their yays and nays out? (post interview) 🙄
Does anyone have any tips for Adelphi's interview? I am just soooo nervous here since some schools did not send out anything yet about interviews... They have almost 2 weeks of interviews and they're not for a few weeks, so I better calm down... or else it will be a messy month for me! 😱

congrats everyone on those who had interviews and good luck to those who haven't yet heard anything!

I'm not bitter. I have gotten interviews. . . . My concern was not for me personally. It was for those who have not received a single interview. Often it isn't what is said. It's how it is said. And, it came across--at least to me--as bragging.

She has removed her post. I wish she hadn't done that. She has a right to her post--just as much as I have a right to comment on it. But, since the post has been removed, I will honor her choice and not discuss it any longer.

Although I cannot speak to others' state of mind when they write things, I know myself, and when I read people bragging about numbers it annoys me, like the one post where people were complaining about how all their interviews were on the same date (the 19th) and I responded how do you think that the people who received no interviews must feel...

The recent argument makes me wonder if I had said anything that might constitute bragging... I will be the first to admit I have been extremely fortunate thus far in the process... and I will be the first to admit such a fact, I do not consider myself a better applicant, I was just more fortunate (I feel like if I were to apply next year with the same application elements I might not get in anywhere)...

So if I have bragged I want to first apologize, but I do not think I have... and frankly I will say that anyone that says things like "oh that was my 13th interview blah blah" is bragging, flat out...

I know personally I feel like **** when I get emails from people that apply to the same places as I have and havent heard anything, I think some of us take it too far over the line of informing others and bragging, and I think we have NO right to do such a thing, especially when there are no grounds to do so to begin with...

cheers

I agree that it was an abuse of forum power... if you have the nerve to post something for people to read and feel bad about, then you damn sure should leave it up for the criticisms too... this goes for everyone including moderators...

True, true and true-depending on how you look at it, it could seem braggy. I believe you and kudos for saying out loud (~) what obviously some people are thinking. Don't get me wrong. I am not commenting on your post with malice. I'm just an observer. Like you said its not what is said but how it is said. To 'me', initially you came off as sounding a little bitter but I'll take your word for it. I just think people were like "futureapppsy, let me know how many schools you applied to, how many you get into, your age, height, allergies and turn-offs!". Ze finally shares and people get offended. But I totally get your point though. I just felt like I had to defend hir since I was one of those people wanting to know hir stats 🙂

I agree that it was an abuse of forum power... if you have the nerve to post something for people to read and feel bad about

Not too sure that was hir intention but yes, it is an open forum. Everybody has the right to criticize and be criticized (?)

Alaska, check out your post on page 18 of this thread. I'm sorry, but I had to make an example of you to support my argument. Even the best of us get lost in our excitement sometimes. Personally, I don't think this was excessive bragging and I share your excitement for having such success. It's absolutely something to be proud of - becoming such a strong candidate is an accomplishment that you achieved on your own.

Everyone should understand that those who have received interviews are proud and want to share their joy with others in the same boat. They don't say these things to intentionally upset those who are having a less fortunate application process and certainly shouldn't be made to feel ashamed for being proud of themselves.

I think anyone who posts here (and in the acceptance and rejection threads) should be given a LOT of latitude before anyone accuses them of bragging.

There's really no way for any of us to know who's going to be upset by our posts. For instance, I couldn't care less if other people got lots more interviews than I did. I was very upset, though, when a few people posted about getting invitations from my absolute #1 top choice perfect-fit I'm-desperate-to-go-there school, while my inbox remained empty. But they had no way of knowing that, and shouldn't have refrained from posting even if they did. The whole point of these threads is to share information, and if we're all paralyzed worrying about who we might offend, rather than considering whether our posts are helpful or interesting to someone, the process breaks down.

More importantly, I'm the one who's responsible for my feelings; it's not up to anyone else to take that on. No one else "made" me feel upset by posting about their interviews at that school. I make the choice to read these threads, because I want the information offered, even knowing that I'm likely to feel upset over some of it. These threads can be rough going; most of us are going to feel upset, angry, disappointed, and the like, at various times. But I hope that people are either able to own their feelings, and practice good self-care to cope with the disappointments, or make the decision to avoid these threads entirely. Blaming other people for posting their information isn't healthy, in my opinion.

I love seeing how many interviews she has gotten. I am very excited for futureapppsych.

If it bothers you, don't read it? Its a public forum people can post what they want, as long as its appropriate.

Seriously, guys, there's no need to start pointing fingers. The moderator had specifically asked how she was coming across in an earlier post, and so a couple of people chimed in with opinions on her latest update. There's nothing wrong with that. Some people agree that it was unnecessary bragging and others don't. We're all individuals with our own opinions... nobody's "wrong" here.

Everyone should understand that those who have received interviews are proud and want to share their joy with others in the same boat. They don't say these things to intentionally upset those who are having a less fortunate application process and certainly shouldn't be made to feel ashamed for being proud of themselves.

And we shouldn't be talking about anyone else's "intention" for writing something because we simply don't know it unless we're sitting in their shoes. Happyinpsych simply let the moderator know how she thought the post might be interpreted, and I happen to agree with her. And I'm not "bitter" either. I've gotten interviews myself. I'm just compassionate about what others who haven't gotten interviews might be feeling.

No I am glad you found it, I even said in my post that I feel like I have probably done this as well... and feel bad for it....

I move that we start posting about our OWN interview invites. Best of luck to futureapp and the rest of us on the forum.

Any seconds?

I'd rather not, as there are already too many daily threads started about various program interview dates, and that just causes me more work to merge them into this thread.

Invite season can be a tough time, so before people get too worked up, I'd recommend taking some time off to decompress. If there is still a legitimate issue after that, feel free to PM me, though understand that it may take me awhile to get back because I'm busy.

FWIW, people have gotten invites and acceptances to programs that I've been rejected at. It's not pleasant, but it's still valuable info.

Can we move on now? I deleted my post--and, as many of you have pointed out, I'm applying to less competitive breed of program, so...

In other news, Rutgers Clinical PsyD invites went out today via mass email, and I've also emailed UVA to see what's up.

After going on an interview, should you send a thank you note to the professor/program via email or is it more appropriate to send a letter by mail? I've read that both ways are acceptable, but I was wondering what you guys think?

Email is the norm in both academia and the professional world in general. Although, no one would ever turn their noses up to a snail mail thanks!

Plus you want them to get the thank you sooner rather than later (i.e. within 5 business days).

This wouldn't work, IMO--you'd be surprised (or at least I have been) how much invite info comes from lurkers, for one, and I think a lot of people wouldn't want to post their invite info publically.

What I meant by this was: let's stop worrying about other's invites and attitudes and just stick to the thread topic. T4C was right when he urged us not to let the stress of applying and interviewing get the best of us.

Anyone going to be at the interview this weekend?

Who knows what to expect? Obviously we've got the schedule of events, but anyone with any other knowledge, tips, etc. would be much appreciated!

Also, I know it's currently snowing again in the DC area....any chance our interview is postponed? I sure hope not!

I am an undergrad at Loyola. Theres a lot of snow still here but we aren't expected to get any more major snow. They are definitely still planning to have the interview. If you have any questions about the school let me know and I'll answer as much as I can. Good luck 🙂

Oh, okay. In that case, I agree. 🙂

Umm.. is Rutgers done sending invites out?
I didn't receive any emails today... :scared:

I haven't been on for about a week but it seems like the pressure may really be getting to some people. I hope you can all keep your cool and if you don't get invites keep working hard and try again next year.

This is round two for me and I have a few interviews and really nervous. I got no interviews last year.

Anyone heard anything from Colorado Counseling program yet?

Hi,

I thought I saw some buzz a little while back that said that St. John's was going to start sending out some invites soon... Any idea if that has happened yet? My application has been complete there for since November 1st!

All I know is that interviews are scheduled on March 1st and 2nd. I believe interview invites are sent out 2 weeks before, so hopefully some time this week?

ugh. stuck in DC due to weather after a long day of interviewing and cannot get to work tomorrow.

hmmm cant be because of weather IN DC I just left from their late last night and Reagan was fine... is it because of Midwest weather?

Does anyone know when Ferkauf sends out their yays and nays out? (post interview) 🙄

I haven't heard anything back from them yet either... but looking at last year's thread it seems like acceptances went out throughout march.

Good luck!

Hey All

I just got an invite To St. John’s University Clinical PhD! Via mass email

Interview Dates Monday March 1st & Tuesday March 2nd

Could whoever got the in-person invite to U. of Montana (clinical) please let me know when the interview is? Thanks!

0 for 3 so far regarding CW Post, Rutgers and St Johns invites. When I checked my application status at Rutgers this morning it still said "no decision"

Hi,

Unreal, some of these schools are so disorganized.

Well, they're still doing interviews b/c of the snow storm.

I received and invite yesterday, 2/15, by phone call then a personal email for an interview on 2/24, 3/5 or 3/8 at PGSP-Stanford Consortium, PsyD. Can anyone tell me more about this program than what the website offers? I'm coming all the way from NY and I have concerns about tuition and general expenses in that area. Any opinions on whether it is totally worth it?

Disappointed not to have heard from U of Denver or CW Post but I'm hoping CW Post has only just begun to send them out?

Any news from Canadian schools (Ryerson, York, Concordia, Mcgill, Queen's...)??

Thanks, good luck to all!
