2009-2010 Internship Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Got another interview today....clearly, sites vary tremendously on when they let you know. I wish there were one day when everyone let you know so we could schedule everything more easily. I'm not complaining, though!

Congratulations on hearing so early - I'm still waiting (im)patiently!

I got my first interview invite yesterday. I was surprised that it came by mail, since most programs seem to call or email.

I'm wondering if this week will bring more activity from sites. After Thanksgiving it's December already.

Congrats on your first invitation! So weird that's by mail though-- why would they choose a notification that's both more costly and more inefficient than email or phone. I'm still wondering how much I even need to monitor my voicemail, since most programs tend to use email.

My feeling is that we'll hear more next week than this week (with the holiday and all), but hopefully we'll all get one or two to hold us over the long weekend.

I'm still getting, "we received your application" e-mails. I'm guessing the week after t'giving will be a whirl wind of invites. I guess that is the downside to all of the Nov 15th deadlines. I only had 3-4 sites that were before the 15th, and they are all very competitive and already said they would take awhile.

I agree the mail notification was strange -- although they suggested in their letter that I respond by email for a quicker response 😕. Oh well, I won't look a gift horse in the mouth. I think you're right that the bulk of the invites will be after Thanksgiving. Good luck!

I thought I would pass along information I've heard from peers in my program. The following sites have started to send out invitations for interviews:

U of Wisconsin
Vanderbilt
Cincy VA
Cincy Children's Hospital

Well I just lost an internship site to the economy. The Florida Mental Health Institute just informed all applicants that the state has cut their funding and they will not be able to offer an internship program this year!

That sucks about the economy - I saw the APPIC bulletin and immediately felt bad for people who applied to those sites. 🙁

To add to the list of places that have sent some invites, University of Chicago and NYU

I'm still waiting, but at least no rejections yet...

I have yet to receive an email confirmation re receipt of my app materials from any site - and I sent out 10 prior to the 15th deadline and four since then. Wow....😕

I did get usps delivery confirmations (but not for all) and an invite from one so I am sure that some of the packets reached their destinations...

When you say NYU, do you mean Bellevue Hospital?

Sorry, I'm not sure 🙁 I just heard my two friends who are in the clinical program here both got invites

Thanks anyway. I think there may be two NYU sites, one at Bellevue and another in neuropsych? anyway... guess I'll just have to wait it out and see.😉

Did anyone not have their Match ID number when they sent off their APPIs? I received my # last week, so I didn't include it on my apps. I'm unsure if I should pro-actively contact each site with it, of it that is something that I just need if/when I am invited for an interview?

Hey, tfc, I am interning at a site and got to see the applications that came in. 90 percent did not have their match ID numbers on the AAPI. Most people do not know this, but your match id number actually pops up when the site enters your name for their rankings. In short, you definitely do not need to proactively contact each site and give it your match number. I would just wait until you actually interviewed there

Thanks!

I heard that it was easy enough for them to see, but then I had a site e-mail me specifically about it.

Me either! I have been glued to my computer for days and checking email *way* too often. Thanksgiving will be a nice and welcomed distraction. I am new to this forum - thank you for creating it T4C. Now I have a place to hang out when I am not checking my email....lol.

Arg!

I'd like to just know where I have interviews, and where I do not. I am not a fan of this "waiting" thing. 😀

I suspect that we won't hear anything today because it's practically the holiday (people have one foot over the door), so we have a little break. I didn't hear anything this week, anyway.
I applied to 4 New England sites and haven't heard from any.....I think next week will be even more nerve-wrecking-- it'll be go time!

Welcome ClapYourHands....you'll find SDN to be a nice bridge between undergrad, grad, and post-grad. We are still growing, so hopefully we can retain some of the people on the tail end to help give early professional development help, etc.

just finished my last apps. 21 of them done and sent out 🙂

Interestingly- I had received a lot of "we received your app" e-mails a few weeks ago and then it abruptly STOPPED. Haven't received any in about 2 weeks!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Time to take a break from checking my e-mail every 3 seconds...maybe I can extend it to every 10 seconds...

JUST got my first interview!!!! Need to get a flight out to CA in the next week....but in my excitement I didn't ask which airport is closest! Ugh.

I ended up getting another one today too....Now hopefully I can relax and enjoy tomorrow's binge.

I also got one today. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Some morbid humor.....

GL to all, this coming week should be a big one for interviews, etc.

Great comic! Hopefully, this week will bring some much needed relief! Good luck to everyone!

I received an email from VA Western New York Healthcare System that said my file was complete and that due to the extraordinary amt of applicants, that the site was going to extend the "hear by" date. "However, like most sites in the APPIC matching process, we are experiencing yet another significant increase in applications over last year, such that we may be delayed into the week of December 15-19 in notifying interviewees.

Just thought I'd pass this along...

All right! Who is ready for Monday? Showtime, folks! Good luck all...

I think it will be a busy (and stressful!) two weeks.

I heard from another this a.m.

If any neuropsych track folks have heard from Boston Consortium, could you post or PM me?

Received a rejection from Brown this morning...

My advisor has taken to telling his students this helpful snippet when they receive rejections:

"well, it will be the first of many!"

Harsh! I'm sure you'll get lots of interviews as well!

Yeah, and it was for the medical psych rotation.

I heard from BC this afternoon too, and it was for a different rotation. Not neuro either. Hope that helps....and hope it's good news. I know they get a lot of applications and they said in the email that they interview over 120 (remember they have a lot of slots), so I bet it will takes a while for them to get back to everyone.

Harsh indeed....but true. Not even the very best students get interviews everywhere. It's best that we're all prepped to receive a slew of rejection letters (and just hope that they're accommodated by some good interviews).

Oklahoma Health Consortium just sent out invites, as did CAVHCS.
Congrats!

Hey all. Thought I'd share that I'm running about 60:40 in the interview: reject ratio so far. Still many more to hear from though.

On the bright side, I guess the rejects help me narrow down my options🙄.

Hi psychmama. Do you mind saying what sites you've heard from?

Since I've been checking this board specifically for info regarding interview notices, I'll let you all know that I've heard from U of Oregon counseling center, UIC, and Univ. of Wisconsin.

My classmates have heard from UCSF, Univ of Minn, Duke, medical college of georgia, and Brown.
