can someone let me know what the dorms are like at nyu? im applying next cycle, not this one, but it would be helpful to know now. are they like undergrad dorms, just two beds in a single room? are they singles? and how much do they cost?

thanks

The "dorms" are singles with one bed per room that opens out to a hallway. Cost from what I remember was between 600-700 (room prices varied slightly room to room). The building is old and kind of run down....but I mean...it's a dorm. What do you expect? There's also studio/apartment housing for upper class students via lottery. For the location, quality, and size it's about the same as any $2000/month studio apartment...so the price is really good for what you get. I would say my undergraduate dorms were way nicer, but what can you do?

Singles... about undergrad size or smaller. They are under 700 a month and over 650. Huge negative is communal bathrooms.

They pretty much stink, but are in the same building as the med school and are 600 dollars a month less than the nicer apartments across the street (according to the tour guide at my interview).

haha, not if you went to undergrad in NYC! those rooms looked spacious enough to me

the first-year rooms are like a closet compared to my undergrad single..and the building is kind of depressing at least from the inside...and the gym wasnt really appealing either though it had more than enough equipment in it..it was just all really run-down and not very clean looking..and the communal bathrooms (males and females use the same bathroom) will be interesting..unfortunately my ideal world view that girls do not use the toilet will be shattered but taking a huge wet dump while a girl is sitting in the next stall reading her cosmopolitan shall be awkwardly fun...at least itll be nice to take showers alongside some hot girls..hey a man can dream no??

how much is the upper class student housing? And the nearby non-student apartments are about $1300/mo, then (deducing this from pedie's post)? I was under the impression that rent was even higher than that in nyc...

Does anyone know whether you can have a hot plate or toaster oven in your dorm room?

Anyone know what sort of living arrangement is the norm for medical school (in nyu, but also other med schools that offer housing). Is it pretty much assumed that 99% of the students will be dorming, or does a large portion of students commute?

I live in nyc and am trying to figure out how prevalent dorming is post-undergrad. Would be helpful to here from current med students here...

Thanks!

Congrats to those accepted! For the rest of us...can anyone comment on the interview invite situation right now? For those invited recently, could you share your completion date? I was complete Oct 9 (kinda late).

I think it's possible that my relatively late completion dates (Sept, early Oct) screwed me over for the NYC schools that I applied to...oh well...

I think our tour guide said the vast majority (~ 90% ?) of M1s dorm. But that's probably because most students aren't local and can't find equally-affordable housing within reasonable distance.

Hey Everybody!

I'm a current first year at NYU, home for the holidays and finally having time to reconnect on SDN.

Hope the application cycle is going well for all of you. Feel free to ask me anything you want.

I see alot of conversation the past few days about the dorms so I'm gonna throw in my opinion. Yes Rubin Hall is kinda run down, the building is old, BUT the people in the building are awesome, and the price is even more awesome. I actually plan to live in Rubin again next year because there is just NO WAY to justify the 200%-300% increase in rent just to have my own bathroom (granted I am a male 😛 and don't find the bathroom situation to be a sensitive issue)

Anyway, I came from far away, and I have no friends from home in the city, so it was amazing to have a great community of people the instant I came to school. It really is fun in rubin, there are always people watching shows/movies/sports down in the lounge on any given night, also it is the go-to place before we go out (most people who life elsewhere end up showing up to the lounge pre-game gatherings as well).

Though Rubin is great socially, its also perfect for studying. We just started anatomy after thanksgiving, and being able to instantly run down for a 1 hr session in the lab late night with a couple of friends was a great asset. You literally have instant access to anything at school, whereas many people who live further off have to put a bit more consideration into their daily routine in terms of when and how long they come to school. Granted the flip side to this is that we often find our selves tired of the med center "bubble", but that is pretty quickly remedied with a trip downtown or up to central park 🙂

Ok sorry for the long-winded response, but as I said feel free to send me questions on here or as a PM, and have a Merry Christmas!!

Thanks 👍. This is great first hand feedback. I personally like the dorm lifestyle too... or maybe I'm just nostalgic about freshman year haha. But I think it would be fun to live in Rubin as long as the students are outgoing. And you're right, I'm sure there are plenty of outlets to get out of the "bubble" if you ever needed to.

Now... if they would only accept me... 🙄

Happy Holidays to all you NYU'ers... and good luck 🙂

Ditto, interviewed 11/16 and am absolutely crapping myself. I know last year they had two acceptance days in December, so I'm really hoping there's another wave before Christmas. Not holding my breath though, and waiting till March for a decision would be so difficult. Bah.

11/20 interviewee here too. No news on Dec 18...I think means bad news for me. Congrats to everyone else!

Same situation... anyone knows more specifics on the chances of being accepted in March if we were passed over in December? My status page still says Final Decision Pending.. 🙁

Thank you for your first-hand information as a NYU med student! As a girl, I am a bit more worried about the communal bathrooms and dorm situation. But living on campus has a lot of benefits that can outweight that. Anyway I am still hoping to get into NYU. Interviewed 11/16. Haven't heard anything. 🙁

When's the best time to send an update letter to this school? I interviewed end of Nov.; would sending one now vs. mid-January make any difference, so long as it's well before March?

Also, does anyone know where to send updates?

I was complete July 21. No word yet.

Should I give up hope for an interview? *sigh*

MSTP interview 11/20. No word.

Might it take longer for MSTP or might they do a second round of emails in Jan? or do we have to wait until March?

No one that interviewed in late November has heard yet.
From what they told me during my interview, we'll probably end up hearing sometime in January, but there was no set date. Just that they would start one round in December, and then make more decision when they got around to it.

Interview Invite today!!!!!!! its a post christmas miracle. I am so in love its not even funny. Complete 09/30.

😍😍😍😍😍😍

I interviewed in late November (11/20) and have already heard back. I dont think that they're doing it in COMPLETE chronologic order because people who interviewed before me have not heard back. Who really knows how this works??? 😕

Anyone been waitlisted or rejected post-interview?

Is NYU you first choice? I see that you've also been accepted to a few other schools + interviews at amazing places!

Congrats on the acceptance! I was thinking of 11/20 as still kinda "mid" November, and I think that's right around the cutoff date. Were there people from 11/20 who didn't hear? I interviewed 11/30 ("late" November), and I don't think anyone who interviewed around then has heard yet.

Happy New Year everyone! 🙂

To current NYU med students/others in the know - how long does the school give you to study for boards, and where in the schedule does it fit? It looks like all core pre-clinical knowledge ends at the end of April of 2nd year - is after this "free time" to study?

you got it. most people take the boards in early june, so you're looking at 5-7 weeks of prep-time (about normal from what I understand, and definitely about as much as you can stand) 👍

I've also heard to take the boards as early as possible, because as soon as some of your friends have taken it and you have another 10 days of lock-down studying during the beautiful summer weather, it can get to you

Thanks! As of right now NYU is up there with my choices of where I would go.. The anatomy lab and living situation are the only things that kinda throws me off. Its hard t say where I would go at this point because the 3 schools that i have to wait until MArch to hear back from are pretty high on my list too.:luck:

What throws you off about the anatomy lab? That there are six people per prosection? or that dissection is less? (I think I read that somewhere but I have no idea how credible that info is)

I think I know what throws you off about the living situation. 😉 Co-ed bathrooms anyone? I guess it's a trade-off where you get to live right on campus but don't have ur own bathroom/shower/kitchen etc. Some people care more than others and I'm trying to figure out which kind I am. 🙂

-Good luck with the other schools! Harvard/Hopkins/UPenn/Yale. I am really impressed! 🙂

Yup. Interviewed 11/16 - heard nothing. Thankfully I have another acceptance so I'm not freaking out!

Yea., I dont think its the numbers that bother me, but rather the overall presentation of the anatomy lab (walking down into the basement and not so up-to-date technology). I think the technology thing bothers me because NYU was one of my later interviews and just about every other anatomy lab that i saw was AMAZING.

And yea, the bathroom situation really sucks. I have lived in a dorm for the majority of undergrad but this year i have an off-campus apartment. I really dont know if i COULD go back to the dorming situation. and idk how serious off campus housing is in NYC. i guess that also depends on my financial aid/ scholarship money. when would we find that out??

Well, I didn't have much to compare the anatomy lab to since it was only my second interview. Seemed okay - nothing amazing, but nothing horrible either. We walked in on some people doing preliminary dissections for the med students (since students don't really have all that much time to dissect, and dissection takes forever).

What did the amazing labs look like? I've heard some schools like Yale have computers that show 3D images and you can dissect away the body and compare it to the one you're actually dissecting. Sounds pretty cool!

You can get off-campus housing but I would assume it is pretty expensive, and it would be hard to find a roommate since most would be living in Rubin (the dorms). I would be a little worried about feeling like I wasn't part of the group since most people would live in the dorms and maybe it would be harder to make friends. But that's just me. But dorms = no privacy. It might be annoying to ALWAYS be around studnets. Especially during exam time. Your quality of living would probably be a lot better off-campus in terms of heating/air-conditioner as well as having ur own bathroom. Although you would have to go outside more often. 😀

Not sure about finaid. The forms are up and every1 should fill them out asap. I have to get on that. I assume you find out in march or april maybe? Then you have a few weeks to decide before the May deadline.

Anyone completed in July and hasn't heard anything yet?
Is this silent rejection? :scared::scared:
I know some people got an invite last week... so i guess invite is still going on...but my complete date was in July :scared::scared:

Complete like Nov 16th ish, and my status just changed from 'complete' to 'under review'

OoooOoooOo

I guess this means I have a shot? They interview through feb, so there have got to be some invitations still to come out....

Does NYU reject pre-interview?

could someone remind me what is/are the time(s) that the interview day starts?

Interview invite today!! YAY!

herestohoping -- do you have a morning or afternoon interview? I scheduled mine for the afternoon, and am supposed to arrive at 10:45 for an 11:00 tour. My interview is at 2:15.

congrats moonflower! can i ask when you were complete?

I was complete on 9/24.

I am an NYC native and a reapplicant - my EC's are really good, but my numbers are meh (3.6 cum/3.2 sci/32P), so I am ecstatic to have an interview here!!! 😀

Don't give up hope if you haven't heard yet! The email I got gave me a choice of interview dates any time between 1/11 and 1/29, so it sounds like they are filling up the January spots now.

I have not heard anything back from NYU yet...is it worth it to send an update letter that consists of 2 fall marks, 3 SUBMITTED abstracts (not accepted just yet - will have to wait till mid Feb).

I ask about the abstracts because I think it'll be too late to send any updates in mid Feb.

my application has been under review forevvvvvvver. i was starting to give up hope for an interview, but it looks like they are still being given out. did you find out on the site or did they contact you?

thanks, moonflower. I emailed them just to make sure and I'm supposed to be there at 11:45 with a 3:00 interview. best of luck to you!

Got an email from NYU today and was super excited, thought maybe it was an acceptance. It was only an invitation to fill out an interview day survey. Sigh.

same here. they really shouldn't do that to us.

Did anyone interview in DECEMBER and hear back? I interviewed 12/2 and haven't heard anything. I'm hoping that its not a bad sign that I haven't heard anything, but that they havent gotten to our pile of interviews yet- hopefully
