Seriously?? That's ridiculous for MSTPers. lol, you get 4 extra years of interest accrual AND you lose 4 years of earning power...

Loss of earning power for four years is a true statement. Interest accrual is out of question, since MSTP students get tuition waiver and get a monthly stipend.:scared:

Oh haha, so I misunderstood. I thought his post meant he had to pay in full during the 4 MD years. I guess he just won't get a living stipend for those years? If that's the case, then it's not that bad.

Yeah, tuition is payed for but a living expenses stipend is not.

MSTPs pay a living stipend throughout all 7+ years of the program. Boston does not yet have NIH funding so it isn't an MSTP, just an MD/PhD.
 
Anyone have an update on how much longer they'll be interviewing?

It's so weird to have heard nothing since August.
 
For those who called were you able to get through to a person... or did you have to leave a message with that automated A-H or H-Z thing or whatever the letters are....

I think interviews go until April 8th, but they are pretty booked... I still haven't heard anything either. I'm trying not to get down about it, but the chances for interview at this point seem pretty slim...
 
Well, I just got a rejection letter out on the East Coast today, so if you haven't received one perhaps you're still in the running.

It pains me, but I am withdrawing. I hope that my interview invite goes to an SDNer.

To those still in limbo, chin up! I was in your same position last year. Got an interview invite over my Spring Break, flew out the first week of April, and was accepted soon after. We're not a school who's ever in a terribly big rush. 😉
 
any new post-interview news lately? i was thinking that we're probably expecting to hear back soon for last week of feb/first week of mar interviews coming up.

Unfortunately I've been hearing some disheartening things on the MD/PhD threads. The conclusion seems to be that Stanford is accepting less MSTPers and instead inviting them to interview for MD-only. I hope this doesn't affect waitlist movement.

Liked...waitlisting them for MD/PhD but asking if they still want to go as MD-only? And re-interviewing them? If they're great candidates I think it'd be hard to pass up a fully-funded/stipend 7-8 year program for the 4 year Stanford route (debt) if they're actually serious about MD/PhD.

No, I meant that they would reject them pre-interview from the MSTP, but invite them to interview MD-only. This would make the applicant pool full of high achieving MSTP-caliber applicants interviewing for regular MD-spots.

Also, I was one such applicant...just not that high acheiving. 🙄

Shouldn't make too much of a difference. I'd imagine MD only candidates are just about as good as MD/PhD candidates at Stanford...and in fact, might be more well-rounded than MSTPers. I don't think the waitlist is ranked...and considering that I still think it would be silly for a MSTPer at Stanford (with acceptances at other great places) to give up a 7-8 year fully funded program for the 4 year program at Stanford, I guess it's possible. If they're high achieving, I bet they interviewed elsewhere and got accepted to some equally amazing places.

Someone earlier mentioned that last year Stanford selected 50 students from the wait list. Is there any documentation to this fact, or is this a "hear say" number?

Well someone above said this:
on interview day i was told that they accept ~150 students outright and pull from the waitlist to fill the 86-seat class. so if you get put on the waitlist chances are not good, but its still possible

And USNews says that they accepted 172 total...so 172-150 = 22 people accepted off of the waitlist.

I should also tell you guys that my Harvard HST Reject email said that this year they had 900 applicants, as compared to the 700 last year...assuming the same thing happened at Stanford, that's also bad news.

I think 150 may be an over-estimate to be honest. Considering that their class size is only 86, they have a pretty high matriculation rate (this it a TOP, TOP program), and that most students won't withdraw acceptances until May...it'd be kind of risky for Stanford to accept nearly 2x it's class size initially if it's really worried about keeping that 86 number.

That's positive thinking 👍

I'm just really tired of the waiting process because I need to get on with my life and it's frustrating not knowing.

One positive thing I can say is that it seems like everyone on SDN who was waitlisted and still posting last April ended up getting accepted.
 
Was anyone rejected pre-interview, or does Stanford just leave us hanging until the very end? If I haven't been invited for an interview by now, I am done...right?

I want to go look for houses at another school, but not if there is still a chance I could still get a Stanford interview.

check above - plenty of rejections pre-interview; you still have a shot at an interview though. i'd wager that theres maybe a handful (literally like 5 spots) left. my friend picked up an interview on friday so while unlikely, its still possible

I know how you feel even though I'm waitlisted...I really want closure, and of course acceptance closure would be best!

Yes, I submitted an update with a few new clinical experiences, extracurricular leadership updates, and a detailed description of my job that I've worked for almost 2 semesters since AMCAS (molecular biology for a start-up pharmaceutical company).

I'll say yes, potentially, Palo Alto can be a fantastic area to go to medical school. But of course that all depends on what you're looking for.

It's definitely suburbia (sleepy, quiet, everything shuts down early), you definitely need a car, and it's outrageously expensive.

For some people those are pluses, but for some they're not.

If you do come here, don't bank on San Francisco being so close. 40 minutes may not sound like much (that's if you have a car), but it's further than you think.

I never really started exploring the city until after I graduated and had more free time.
