Just got the letter in the mail saying I'm on the 'hold for spring consideration' list

Vulcan, think there's any chance of being able to do the shadow a student for a day? I realize there's probably very limited spots for only people actually accepted, but does the program go on until spring or nah? I was really looking forward to it, now looks like I'll just be pitying myself until I get an actual acceptance.+pity+

Oh don't worry about the shadow program dates. The program is mean to be flexible, as a extra service to students so they can get a realistic feel for what Downstate is like. The program runs for as long as students want to come shadow. The only limiting factor is how free the hosts' schedules are 🙂

damn.... when did you interview? I interviewed back on Nov 24 and still haven't heard a word.

didn't someone say somewhere though that a ton of people got off the hold list last year and got in?

I might as well just toss this one out there, since i realllyyy like this school and want to go there lol:

I called monday, and they said a decision had been made but it hadn't been put into the system yet... and the lady on the phone thus did not know what the decision is.

on my status page, i don't have the red x's, so that means it may not be an acceptance, but if its not in the system, then it can't change my status page...

Haven't seen anything in my mail yet.

Considering the above facts, I feel incredibly 'on the cusp' right now, haha.

But like idk, i don't wanna sound too ridic but my stats and ec's are quite good and I thought my interview went phenomenally (to be totally honest lol) so if I don't get accepted I am going have a "what. the. eff. am. I. doing wrong" moment, ahahaha

If it's any help, i already got the acceptance letter and my status page hasn't changed yet. Also, just to give you a time line, the letter was dated jan4, postmarked jan 8, and i got it jan 11. so you'll definitely be getting it soon. you must be sooo excited. good luck!!!:luck:

Just got an interview invite yesterday (1/15) for February 3rd! Sucks a little, since I was just near NYC for another interview on the 11th, but since this is in the middle of class it'll just be a quick plane up and back. I hate to ask since it's probably been asked a thousand times, but is there any quick advice on which hotels and airport to use?

How long does it take on an average to hear back post interview?? I dont remember it being mentioned during my interview. (I:1/12)

LOL, congrats! Searching this thread will probably give some good advice about airports, not sure about hotels. Airports: LGA and JFK are more or less the same, so chose based on flight cost/convenience. Hotels: Are expensive in NY. Not sure if there is a student host program (b/c I'm an NYer) but I would try that. There are likely some reasonably unsketch and cheapish hotels near midtown east, get something convenient to Downstate's subway lines, call hotels to try to get discounts for business/interviewing.

As I'm sure you know hotels in NY are expensive so I would try to hit up a friend. But if you need a hotel, try the Best Western Gregory Hotel, which is on 4th avenue in Park Slope. It's pretty convenient for the interview day because you can take the M,R subway to Atlantic terminal (1 stop) then take the 2,5 train to Winthrop (~20 min). Then 5-minute walk to Downstate. Good luck on your interview!

I interviewed a few days before you did and when I asked they told me to wait 6-8 weeks for a decision

Try the student host because if they do not find one for you they will at least set you up with a complimentary room for the night. When I interviewed OOS they did not have anyone available so I got the complimentary room which was one of the dorm rooms.

I second this. I stayed with a host when I interviewed and its so convenient, the dorms are right across from the street from the building where the interviews are, plus, its free! Good luck!

Just got my first acceptance here on Friday after my 12/1 interview! So excited! 🙂

Congrats!

Damn you interviewed 12/1 and heard back? I interviewed back on the 24th of the November and still haven't heard anything, though I was told on the phone that a decision was made... so who knows lol.

Hi Guys

I was lucky enough to get an interview at SUNY for the end of January. Found out a week ago. Any tips on the interview? I'm OOS but I attended undergrad. in and now currently live in NYC. Any advice welcomed...Thanks

Yeah, but my letter was dated Jan 4th and I didn't get it until the 15th, so maybe your letter is still in the mail! I hope you find out soon!

damn, got rejected.... i thought my interview went phenomenally (no hyperbole, i thought i nailed it in almost every way - even showed interest in the school), my gpa and mcat are way above their average..... damn.

got another interview 2morrow at weill, so we'll see how this goes.

aww that sucks, I'm sorry. Good luck w/ your interview tomorrow though!

Rejected today, pre-interview. Felt I was pretty competitive here and went to a SUNY for undergrad too. This process continues to baffle me. Good luck to everyone else, I have a friend who goes here and she really likes it.

I'm sorry to those of you who got rejected. I hope you'll find a different school to go to and that it will be a great fit for you.

If there's one thing I've learned about the application process, it's that it is, more than anything, a crap shoot. All you can do is try to weight the odds in your favors with good stats and EC's and hope that you get lucky.

Again, best of luck to you.

hey aspiring doc, you have nothing to worry about, my interview at downstate was totally relaxed and conversational. just be yourself and im sure youll do fine

Signed up for the shadow a student program. Will be going next month.

So we got contacted about 2 ppl that are gonna be shadowing...I picked up one of them so if anyone here is shadowing soon, you might get me 😀

I second this, I actually really enjoyed my interview. My interviewer was incredibly nice and it didn't feel like an "interview" at all. Good luck!

First time posting on this thread, been observing for a while
I was completed since late Oct, IS, went to a SUNY for undergrad too...
haven't heard back anything... anyone on the same boat? =[

Three years ago I was in the same position and I got an interview for early February.

But just for reference, they could care less if you're from SUNY. They do weigh your IS status a bit, but when I went to interview I was the only person who had attended a SUNY (out of about 8-10).

It's actually shame though, because I think people who went to SUNY would be much more likely to go to SUNY for medical school.

not exactly the same boat, but i'm a ny'er and was complete way back in july and just got an interview invite about 3 weeks ago. try not to get discouraged, it seems like it takes them a while sometimes but that doesn't mean they've forgotton about you. good luck, i hope you get an invite!🙂

Thanks! I wish I can say the same 3 years from now.
I totally agree with u... if anyone values a SUNY education, SUNY med schools should be the first ones to do so.

Thanks for the encouragement!🙂 I am from Brooklyn... Being the only med school in the borough, thought they would show me some love. Downstate, why are you so slow!?😏 How are ur stats like if you don't mind me asking? 31/3.73c/3.66s here...

sure, no problem-31/3.9

Thanks Reekneee and blondy for the info. I've heard that a lot, that the interviews at SUNY Downstate are conversational and low-stress. Has anyone had an interviewer at SUNY Downstate who wanted to know more specifics and details about things - like in someone's research, clinical experiences, transcript, etc. Thanks again!

Yea my interviewer grilled me on research and a bunch of other things. It seems that most of the interviews are low-stress.

I interviewed here last week and it seems my interviewer doesn't have an email account (at least I can't find it). So if I want to send a thank-you card, to whom or where should I send it to? Should I send it to admission office and tell them to forward it to my interviewer? Please answer me question and thanks in advance!

Got an invite to interview last friday for feb 9th. Anyone else that date?

Vulcan or anyone, please answer my question. Where should I send my thank-you card, since my interviewer doesn't seem to have an email account?

PM me the name of the person who interviewed you.

I was on hold for fall grades and they just got processed about a week ago...:xf:

However I also realized that my committee letter was not showing up on my status page so I emailed to check on it...turns out the never downloaded it from amcas (probably another reason I was on hold!). The only two rec's I had outside of my comittee letter were from my research PI and my regular job boss--pretty empty app! Still isn't showing up on my status page but I emailed them again to check up...jeeeeez people. 👎

Why don't you just send it to the admissions office, c/o it to your interviewer.....

For those who interviewed and were accepted and rejected, is the response via mail? And if so, are they letters or packets??

So do they give post denial feedback here?

I'm in the same boat as you. I thought my interview went amazing and my stats are higher than average. So, I too was/am very confused. I called the admissions office today and apparently April-August you can send an email to admissions asking for them to pull your file and explain/outline areas of weakness.

I was accepted through snail mail, and it wasn't a packet, just a congratulatory letter and a statement of intent sheet.

Good luck everyone!

Same with me and apparently I just got a packet with shadowing info last week, so its been about 3 weeks since I got the acceptance.

My status page is still the same as before.

Where is this status page you're talking about? Also, Octavian, when was your interview?

Wooot! Interview invite today for 3/4 =]
Downstate is one of my top choices. Almost thought they forgot about me...

Just wondering if anyone has heard from SUNY yet who was waitlisted for spring consideration, pre-interview, pending fall grades??

Anxiously awaiting them, my #1 choice...

Has anyone who interviewed 12.1 heard back? Or has anyone called the admissions office I have not been able to get through to them...

So will they start looking at the post-interview hold people soon?
