I haven't received an email either.

Although I already sent them an update about my grades/research/etc. before Christmas.

ok, so today I got an email from Downstate that asked me to reconfirm my interest in their school. They specifically said if I wish to not attend and "This will release your place and benefit others who wish to attend". So of course, in a typical pre-med fashion I am overanalyzing and don't know what this means. I have not checked my mail in 3 days so I don't know if i have received anything or if something got lost in the mail, but does this mean I am in, or that they are simply going over my application? Has anyone else gotten this email?! HELPP! 😱

I don't think it's anything to worry about. I assumed that it was sent to accepted applicants so that it would prompt us to re-assess our desire to hold the spot, and thus potentially open up spots for folks who are waiting. Circumstances may have changed for each applicant from when the spot was originally held, so this is just a way of 'checking in' and making sure that our intention still stands.

If you're sure that you want to hold the spot, just send them a quick email to that effect and you should be all set. 👍

Haha omg i opened that email up this morning and was freaking out too cuz i thought i didnt understand what it meant. But i sent a response anyway saying that i was still interested and i look forward to hearing from them soon. it sounds like they're ready to make a decision but don't want to waste their time if you dont want to go to downstate anyway.

For those that received the email, are you guys post-interview and on hold?

Well, on my email it says that my application is a post-interview hold pending until they receive my fall grades.

Does anyone know if it's realistically possible for OOS students to get IS tuition after 1st year?

i was told that it was just filling out a bunch of paperwork and providing proof of residency

i'm guessing you might wanna get professional help since if you do it wrong or it gets screwed up it could mean going another year as an out-of-state resident costing you another $20,000

They said that you have to live off campus for your first year to obtain new york state residence. then you can get your instate tuition but ask someone in admissions im sure they can help u with that.

The email that I received was post-acceptance, post-deposit. Basically a weird, reconfirmation that you'd still like to hold a place in the class.

I received a friendly reminder to send them my fall grades (which are still not all in 😡). This is a pre-interview hold.

Yea, I received the same thing. Kinda weird. Wonder what's behind it. Maybe they want to see how many interviews they should still give out based on who wants to stay on the list. Or maybe that had trouble before with a lot of people not letting them know if they rejected their seat until late in the season and they want to see who really wants to hold a seat early. Who knows?

yeah, I was a little scared upon seeing that as I'm also post-acceptance/post-deposit. would this mean if I hadn't seen it, I would've lost my place? Probably not but it's the only acceptance I have, so I have reason to be freaked out! I hope they didn't overfill the number of seats already...

I've seen this on here multiple times from various people so I figured I'd clarify.

The class is nowhere near full, people! Don't worry about us running out of seats. I was just informed that interviews are going multiple days each week through April. This means that there are plenty of seats to fill. 🙂

Hang in there guys!

i feel like they couldnt be using it to determine interviews. most people wouldnt withdraw themselves until may 15 anyway.

wonder why they really did it.

Today I received an email request for my fall grades post-interview. Anyone had similar experiences?

Eugh. I interviewed November 24th... haven't heard back.... and ended up getting shat grades fall semester 09. Hopefully they won't ask for mine.

If you don't mind me asking: why did they ask you for fall grades? are you missing a pre-req? Was your gpa borderlineish at time of application (~3.5 or lower?) was your mcat borderlineish?

That's my fear too. My fall grades are total crap, and I would be screwed if they asked for them. So far they didn't, so hopefully they'll let it pass for me.

damn, i'm post interview, haven't heard back, and didnt get that email... i guess that means they really haven't discussed me yet? hopefully that doesn't mean rejection lol. Though I interviewed on nov 24th, and the last person who posted a decision on hear said they interviewed nov 4, so i doubt i've even been looked at yet.

Apparently I have the worst luck this cycle. My grades are not up for the fall due to circumstances out of my control. Will Downstate mind if I send it to them within the next week? 😕

anyone remember when the second look is?

they dont have one but you can do a shadow a student thing. i think it starts this month and goes through april so you can set it up for whenever works for you

For those of you who have been accepted/ post-int hold, about how long did it take for you to get your acceptance or hold letter in the mail?? just curious...been anxiously waiting for 6 weeks now.

Took 8 weeks for me so hang in there! I emailed them at the 7 week mark and asked what the status was on my application. They told me, "we mailed your letter last week...if you don't receive it by the end of the week email us again and we will overnight it to you." Maybe you should try calling/e-mailing them.

Congrats NEWHER!!!

Thanks JMill87! I guess i could give them a call next week then or maybe even now 🙂

Does anyone know what the dorms are like and how much they cost?

Where do most students live? Are people basically spread out throughout Brooklyn or are there a few popular areas? And whats the rent like in those areas?

Also, how is parking in the area. One of my options is to live at home and commute from Westchester, which I was told takes 35 min. without traffic but up to 1 hour with traffic. Is that too much?

Have you considered taking the Metro-North? The traffic can be atrocious. On the train you can take care of stuff, read. etc.

Metro North will only get me to Grand central, and its still over an hour each way. If traffic takes >40min to drive I would just move to Brooklyn.

Do students like to live in Brooklyn. I don't know too much about it but the area around the school is definitely not my top choice on where to live and the rent is still pretty expensive there.

If you had to drive I think you'd have to go through some nasty roads, like the Cross Bronx (it's a parking lot 8AM-7PM M-F), FDR, BQE, etc. You should only do that if you have nerves of steel.

The area around the school is definitely not representative of the rest of Brooklyn. I live in a leafy suburban area (looks like Westchester 😀). There are some cool, hip neighborhoods like Park Slope, Williamsburg, Ditmas Park (also Downtown Brooklyn if you like really busy places). There's always Manhattan, if you have exceptionally deep pockets 😉. I don't know where most students live.

Most MS1's live in the dorms. You have a choice of a regular single or double, a double two-room apartment, or a single or double studio apartment.

The dorms are a bit run-down. The good news is that the staff is very good about fixing things up. The location cannot be beat. It is across the street from the education building, where you will make your formal sacrifice of your free time to the MS1 G-ds. It is 2 blocks from Kings County Hospital, where you will most likely have your PCP.

For many students, the carrels are a great place to study (especially if you prefer study groups), and living near them can be an absolute lifesaver on a test week during winter when it snows and/or is bitter cold.

Vulcan-

Do you think living in the Downstate dorms would work for a married couple?

If not, what areas would you suggest? Technically, I live in NYC, but I'd want to live a bit closer to the school than I do now.

I live in Ditmas Park, Brooklyn (Isch you're in Midwood?) and I can tell you Bklyn is extremely varied. There is yuppie-ville, the ghetto, the slums, the avg neighborhood, and the metro complex neighborhood.

I'm coming tomorrow so I'll see you Vulcan (how can I rec you?) for an MD/PhD intvw. I've seen the dorms and I can tell you, they're a lot better than NYU's. I really like how the dorm building and rec building are within their own little gated area so you can safely go from your bed to the gym, even at midnight to burn stress. The dorms are cozy and the school facilities are really nice, regardless of what you think of the neighborhood.

I've actually taken a class with the students there, I like the buildings, the professors and even the ER docs (what-up Dr.Gore!) I worked with. I'd be on cloud 9 with an acceptance to Downstate.

Excited for tomorrow!

Close! I'm in Fiske Terrace.

Actually some of the first good friends I made here are a married couple living in the dorms. I think they have a special deal for married couples.

ahhh snap man, I'm also at the 6 week mark and didn't get that email about reconfirming my interest... this may not be a good thing...

did you interview on the 24th? cuz thats when I was there....

nope no decision yet...but im getting anxious! lol hope we hear some news soon or else i guess i'll be calling admissions to see whats up.

u did get the email though, and I didn't, which really worries me.....

though i did indicate 'strong' interest in the school in the interview, so maybe they figured that was enough?

anyone else still waiting on a decision get this email?

As said earlier in the is thread, it looks like ONLY two types of people got emails:

1) Reminder to submit fall grades among pre-interview folks who had previously been asked to send in grades when they were available.

2) Request to restate interest in holding a seat in the class for folks who were already accepted and had already reserved a seat in the class.

Doesn't seem like you're in either of these groups, so I wouldn't worry about the email.

well i think dontstopbelievin got the email, and he/she hasn't got a decision back and they aren't interested in his fall grades....

w.e. its all good tho

I got the email as well and I am post-interview, but no news at all. Curse this process. It's so unncessarily long and confusing!

Wait, got what email? An email from Downstate asking you about your interest in the school w/o having a decision from them?

SUNY sent out an email to all accepted applicants (and perhaps waitlist?) confirming that they are still interested in the school. I am sure this is probably for a check on spots so that if someone had gotten into a new school they prefer but hadn't notified SUNY, they could now do so. I do not think its a big deal for people who are yet to hear back.
