Hey guys! Greetings from SUNY Downstate!

Just wanted to wish you guys good luck and to COME HERE! It's awesome😀

I'd be happy to answer any questions...I'm just a lowly MS1 but I will offer what I can!

And to those on spring deferral (Elmo i saw), it's better than a waitlist. I know some people who were accepted right off of that deferral.

Hope to see y'all next year!:luck:

You just made my night. This was after another day of getting nothing from Upstate and accidentally pouring a bag frozen ravioli on the floor.

Vulcan, so when in Spring exactly do they look at us Hold people again?

Happy to help 🙂

I think they start looking through the apps of the deferred people again sometime in April, although they keep at it for a few months into summer.

And for all, an encouraging story:

A friend of mine who is now a classmate was deferred and waitlisted in july...he got in 5 days before orientation.

DONT GIVE UP HOPE!🙂

Vulcan, so when in Spring exactly do they look at us Hold people again?

It looked like a TON of people got in off the hold list as we got closer to summer. I don't think I saw anyone off the wait list. So it looks like if you're on the hold list you're either waitlisted or accepted 🙂

EDIT: This is based on many of the posts in last year's SUNY Downstate topic. I have no insider information, I'm just speculating.

how do you know?

It's worth the wait I promise...we may not be as well known as other schools but we have much to offer...what'd you post-interviewees think?

Can anyone comment on the neighborhood and facilities that Downstate has to offer?

Can anyone comment on the neighborhood and facilities that Downstate has to offer?

As I'm sure youve all heard, Downstate is not in the best neighborhood. We are in the middle of Brooklyn, so its not really a place to be wandering around in at night. There was, for example, a drive by 2 blocks from the dorms 3 weeks ago.

That being said, I find the area to be fine during the day. I've wandered back to the dorms with a case of beer in hand with no problems when its light out.

As for facilities, Downstate is old but good. We have 2 dorm buildings which have regular singles and doubles, studio single and doubles, and 2 person apartments.

The Student center has a gym, weight room, 2 squash courts, a pool, and a giant TV.

Each dorm building has a lounge with a big TV, and one of them has a pool table, air hockey, and foosball.

There are 2 main hospital here: University Hospital and King's County. I am personally very partial to King's, but they are both great hospitals. The doctors here are friendly and very open to shadowing.

The gross anatomy lab is BRAND NEW AND AWESOME. LCD screens all over and spiffy new tables and counters.

Each person gets a study space in what we call the carrels. They have a computerized whiteboard in each carrel (which holds about 25 study spaces).

I hope this helped. I am happy to answer any other such questions. Feel free to PM me as well.

Hooray, Just got an interview invite from Downstate. Complete 9/25 apparently, though I'm sure I sent off my materials earlier.

I'll be there Dec 2 but its conveniently about 30 min away from my Grandfather's apartment by bus so I get a mini-vacation too.

Just my luck, I bet the rest of Downstate will be great too. Hopefully not too cold, I haven't seen snow in a few years.

It'll still be cool...theyll show you everything. The students here are really friendly too so dont be afraid to ask them things...we still remember what its like to be in your shoes.

I however, will be enjoying that day seeing as I have off that whoooole afternoon (a rare occurrence)...i do hafta come in at 9 though for radiology...=/

Interview invite!!!! Complete 9/17

I AM SO EXCITED!!!! This is my dream school- financially, location-wise, and clinical experience. YEAY YEAY YEAYYY!!!

Sorry was out of town the last few days in Stony Brook.

I will be there on Thursday of this week

Unfortunately, the MS1s have the Musculoskeletal written final on friday morning, and the anatomy and histology practicals in the afternoon. We get thursday off to study/scream/hit things/study/study so any MS1s you see will be frazzled and in a bad mood.

There will, however, be plenty of (relatively) happy-go-lucky MS2s since they just finished the most difficult preclinical block at Downstate.

Good luck on the interview! Feel free to ask any questions you have about the school. I will still be checking this thread despite it being a test week.

Hahaha well I definitely will not hold that against the school as I'm sure I would feel the same way. Good luck on your exams! 👍 And thanks for representing your school in this thread!

Thanks!🙂

November 18th. A Wednesday. Its so soon!! I am so excited but so nervous. It will be my first interview as well. Ahhh!

Greetings from a slightly drunk halloween vulcan! Congrats again yk! Wednesday's schedule is a bit tricky:

9-10 AM is Gross lab review
10AM-12PM is Gross lab for the whole class: Interior of the skull and Cranial fossa.
That afternoon I will be going to my preceptor and the other half of the class is off.

There is a small chance that they will bring you guys down to see us digging into empty skulls. If they do, you can come say hi! I am the tall guy in the back right part of the lab in black scrubs ^_^

Go rawk that interview!:luck:

So...has anyone else here interviewed in early September and not heard back from Downstate as of yet?

Oh man, I wish we could go see you guys cut into skulls. That would be awesome!!! If I do, I will definitely be the one waving like a silly goose, just excited to be there. 😀

Hahaha...oh I miss the days when gross lab seemed like fun 😛

We just had a practice musculoskeletal practical exam...192 questions spread over 149 stations comprised of cadavers in strange positions, Xrays, arteriograms, photos of bodybuilders (with the prof's faces on em 😀) and individual bones. 30 seconds per station (and some stations had 3 questions each). I am exhausted!

Something for all you hopefuls to look forward to!

I haven't heard back too from early September. They said they were mailing out my decision last week but nothing came. I called yesterday and the lady said she doesn't know when I will hear back. You will get different info from them depending on who you speak to. Back to limbo for me.....

yup,

I interviewed lateish sept. and haven't gotten anything either.

Gah, I would love to go here....

Yeah, I interviewed mid sept. and still haven't heard back =X...waiting is more nervewrecking than the actual interview process

I completely agree...I interviewed at Downstate in early September, and I called the school this morning like someone suggested in one of the posts above...the nice lady in the admissions office said they just made a decision and a letter should be sent out later this week or early next week...so I think we all might hear back in the next week or two.

Good luck to all you guys receiving decisions this week!

If you get in, they'll tell you about coming in to shadow a first year some time this year. I am likely signing up for this! Come follow me and see the life that you will soon lead...::evil laugh:::luck:

Does anyone know if Downstate gives decisions over the phone. whether it be good or bad? Just called and got a weird response

Also does downstate usually send out rejections so early? The lady I spoke to in the admissions office said the next round of letters are being sent out this week or early next week. I interviewed on Oct 7 and mine is being sent out.

They won't tell you over the phone, The was the first thing they kept telling me everytime I called to check why I hadn't heard back anything yet.

Just checked my status page and there's a new section with all the vaccinations and transcripts and red X's next to them. No official word yet about an acceptance, but I think/hope this might be a good sign.

Mine has the exact same thing now too! Fingers crossed! :xf:
Can anyone else who has gotten an acceptance comment on this?

Thanks! What's MS1 MSQ?

Also, How does one become CPR certified? Do all med schools require this or just Downstate?

Once the app cycle is over AMCAS will send you a questionnaire so that you can help them gather statistics. This is sent to your school too. Its a required thingy so they put it on there.

And the CPR cert is required for all schools. You are working with real patients this year and if you are alone in a room with a patient in a cardiac clinic and they keel over, you should know what to do.

Look for the AHA CPR for Healthcare Provider course.

Just thought I'd chime in and give this out:

https://www.training4life.org/regindiv.php

This is what I used to register for my BLS course. If I remember correctly, they give a discount. Although SUNY Downstate will say to use the American Heart website to register, trainning4life works fine as well since they are under American Heart.

I don't need to bring a photo of myself or passport copy for this interview correct? I guess it's too late anyways I am already in NYC and did not bring them but the email did not say to do so. Hopefully I am fine.

nah, you're fine. good luck!

So can anyone who've been accepted state whether or not their status page changed to one with health requirements and admissions deposit?

This may sound like a stupid question...but how do you log onto the admissions checklist website? I was never given a user name or password.
