Just wondering if anyone has heard from SUNY yet who was waitlisted for spring consideration, pre-interview, pending fall grades??

Anxiously awaiting them, my #1 choice...

From last year's thread I found that they hadn't started accepting people from that list until April. The waitlist was also formed around the same time. So in a few months we'll all probably be either accepted or waitlisted.

So we have to wait to find out whether we have more waiting to do 🙂

If someone that wants to be a doctor ever asks me, "what's the medical application process like?" I have a very simple answer in one word form: waiting.

Heard back from my 12/2 interview a few weeks ago via snail mail on the 11th. Snail mail stuff gets lost in the shuffle, keep trying them. :luck:

It's also really common that they look at the applications out of order for various reasons usually having to do with the interviewer. So do not go thinking you were rejected just because you haven't heard back. They don't take any more time to send out rejections.

So does that mean that applicants who are on "hold for spring consideration" cannot be rejected.

I dont think that is true...I was put on hold for spring consideration pre-interview (I am assuming this was because I was just starting a masters program in September). So I can definitely be rejected...I'd rather not be rejected, of course 😛

I have sent all sorts of updates though, and I am thinking of doing an in the area email in late february if I haven't heard anything! :xf:

I was talking about "Post-Interview" hold. I am sorry, I should have made it clear in my earlier post.

Anyhow, anyone know for sure if one can be rejected after being put on Post-Interview "Hold for Spring Consideration"?

Just to clarify, I haven't been invited for an interview yet, just put on hold for spring consideration...so I have no idea where I stand?
Quick stats MCAT B 13 P 11 VR 11 WR R cGPA 3.3 sGPA 3.7 non traditional who ended up being a little late (mental note...always apply early unless you feel like throwing away 3000$)

Im in the same boat--didnt apply terribly late, but in first semester of a masters program. I think we are not in the worst situation--if they didnt like our stats they would have rejected us straight out, we got the "hmm, maybe" nudge I think. Not the best situation, not the worst. From reading last years thread though, people on hold for spring consideration heard back from the school through June, yuck! Most at least got interviews.

Anyone go through this last year?

Hey guys
Is the status update page broken? I was able to access it last week and saw that all my materials had been received, but now nothing happens when I try to log in? Is that just a glitch or is that an ominous indication of rejection???

I was just reviewing the 08-09 thread, and a couple posts mention applicants being accepted from the 'hold for spring consideration' list...so I'm curious, these people had already had an interview right?
Because I'm twiddling my thumbs with a PRE-Interview Hold for Spring Consideration...whatever that means...

For acceptances or hold snail mails, are the letters differentiable? Checked last years thread and it seems the acceptances came in a manila colored envelope?? Can somebody clear this up please?

Manila is correct.

....fear the thin white envelope.

If I understand it correctly, acceptance letter would be in a big manila envelop and waitlist/rejection would be in a thin whilte envelop. Correct me if I am wrong.

Please understand this is very important for me to know since my parents who will be receiving the decision in NYC don't speak English and I live in Philly.

Thanks Zona, that's all I need to know. Rejection would also be in a thin white envelop from my experience last time.

Hi! First time poster, long time lurker. I will be interviewing on Thursday 11th of Feb, Vulcan will you be my tour guide? Will you be still wearing the sox cap? Anyone else that time? First interview for me. :luck:

Sorry I am signed up for one tour in early March and one early April. There were a lot of tour guides this year. I will, however, be wearing the sox cap! Unfortunately, you will not be seeing me anywhere, as I have histology lab that day, which is upstairs.

Since I only have 2 tours, the best odds of seeing me and my pretty face would be at a student shadow thingy. Those are up for grabs. Even if you don't get me specifically, I still may see you around!

Zilla congrats on the interview and best of luck!:luck:

To all you other people, onward and upward!

Invite! (for 3/3).

Hi Vulcan--

how would you describe the sense of community at downstate? Do you feel the students are more focused on landing a great residency than enjoying medical school?

Thanks for your insight!

I am considering downstate 🙂

Hello!

I was pleasantly surprised at the close knit community here. The students in each year really get to know each other and feel like colleagues. Plus, you undergo the same torture together, which makes it far more bearable.

Most people have no idea what kind of residency they want, and it will change a million times anyways. We all are just focused on passing our classes. After each exam, we have a big block party in a bar. We have lots of dorm events (potlucks and meetings with dinner and stuff). In fact, just the past monday we had karaoke to celebrate the end of cardiovascular/respiratory!

If you'd like to see how we all fit together, please come visit. We'd be happy to have you.

Do most students live on campus dorms or off campus housing?

i think when i interviewed they said ~55%-70% of first years live on campus depending on the year.

It's sooo much easier to live in the dorms especially when it's really cold out, since most days class starts at 9AM.

I can vouch for this, for what it's worth.🙂

Out of my interviews, I felt that Downstate had one of the most close knit student bodies.

I actually would like to come visit Downstate prior to my interview next week. How can I coordinate this? 🙂

well it depends on how you want to do it. Officially, you can contact Ilana in admissions and she'll arrange something for you (probably depends on how early you want to get here). Unofficially, you could probably stay with one of the peeps on this forum if you're not creeped out. Depends on your comfort level I guess
🙂

My stats are pretty high, average ECs. The reason they put me on hold is probably because I had one more prereq to finish last fall.

Try calling to see if they got your update. It definitely won't hurt.

Actually, they put me on hold even though I had finished all my pre-reqs and had above average stats

Does any NYS resident who has gotten into Downstate need to send in a residency application?? I was looking at my status page an noticed a red X all the way at the bottom where it says residency status. then next to it, it says "residency application". Any idea what that is?
thanks!!

I received a manila envelope when i got waitlisted.
my envelope contained a form i have to fill and send back to remain on the alternate list, and a letter asking me to send my final transcript before July.
Although it wasn't explicit it seems as though I shouldn't expect to hear from them until this summer (e.g. they asked for a contact info "after June").
Is this indicative of where I'm on the list?

hold for spring here...looks like its worse than a waitlist. my chances at med school are dwindling away...

Not necessarily, you still have a decent chance for an acceptance. Better than a rejection which I got 2 years ago. If you don't mind asking, how long did it take you to get the decision since your interview?

Does anybody that goes to the school have a car? Whats the parking like?

Just interviewed today. How long did it take everyone to hear back? Does downstate only notify via snail mail? thxxxx!

Alternate list. A large yellow envelope came by snail mail yesterday. Interviewed 12/15.

Wait wait wait, from previous posts I thought the alternate list came in a white envelope and acceptance came in a manila envelope? can someone corroborate this?
