Does anyone know what the US New ranking for Downstate is? I looked on the website and it just says N/A for research and primary care. Anyone know if this is because its actually unranked or just because its unavailable?

Unranked. SUNY Stony Brook is the only ranked SUNY SOM....I think.

Not that these rankings matter.....whatsoever.

All of the SUNY schools have perks and downsides. Pick the one that fits you....if you have the option.

Good luck. 🙂

Are you sure the rankings don't matter. I thought I had maybe seen the SUNYs ranked somewhere around 60, but I could be wrong.

Also, what would you say are the perks and downsides of each of the SUNYs?

I'm trying to decide between them (except for Stonybrook where I was waitlisted) and the impressions I get are:

Downstate: old/limited resources, but great clinical population
Upstate: Newer facilities, more clinically focused
Buffalo: Blend of clinical and research, the administration realized the program is struggling and is trying to fix it so it could go either way in the future.
Stony brook: Big emphasis on research

I don't think Downstate even participated in the US News Ranking. I have this book from the US News for 2007 Medical School data and the data for SUNY Downstate is unavailable. In other words, I think Downstate turned down the US News offer to have their stats/data published. If you go to Eduers.com, clearly, Downstate wasn't one of the school listed with data for 2007 published.

Deadline for priority filing of fin-aid is March 1st. You need to give yourself time to draft letters, make copies of papers, get things notarized if necessary and mail everything in. I would start this ASAP. It takes a lot of time to fill out FAFSA, TAP, each school's forms, ect.
What if you get accepted in April? Does that mean no fin aid for you? I've an acceptance from Buffalo so far and I've received no fin aid info from them. Why's that?

I found Buffalo's financial aid info on their website.

If you interviewed but have not heard back yet, go ahead an submit the financial aid stuff now anyways, and then when you are accepted their financial office can work on your package right away.

Also, if you cannot get in stuff by March then it doesn't mean you will get 0, it just may put you at a slight disadvantage.

I'm not sure, but I was under the impression that Buffalo's facilities are newer than the rest. Either way, I know they're sinking $500,000,000 into a new downtown medical campus over the next decade so it'll be pretty interesting to see what happens.

I was wondering if anyone suggests a rescheduling? I have an interview here at 3/17, but that's during my spring break and I'm heading on a week-long community service trip at school. Downstate said interviews are difficult to schedule, unless for legitimate reasons they may accommodate. Does anyone know how this can affect my candidacy? I also don't know if I'd be interviewing for a waitlist position, and their class is full.

Help please???

I have a similar question: anyone know how receptive Downstate is to "in the area" pre-interview emails?

anyone interviewing here this coming tuesday??? (possibly willing to split a cab to JFK afterwards?)

i was given an interview on 3/8 but i am in a post bacc and we have an exam that day. i asked if i could make up the exam and wass told that if i missed the exam for an interview i would get a 0 on the exam. soooo i explained this to downstate and the lady that does the interviews was really helpful and pleasant about the whole thing. im sure if you explain your situation it won't be a problem. i was dreading rescheduling but i really dont think it will affect me too much (i hope!) sooo my new interview day (which was given to me about 20 minutes after i asked for a reschedule) is 3/17!

Hey everyone,
Just wondering if anyone was planning to live in the residence halls their first year?

are you sure about this??

The people who were waitlisted got letters that said the class was full (look at the last 2-3 pages of this topic for reference). It's possible that those letters are mistaken or lies, or that the users are mistaken/lying.

Congrats. My alternate list letter states the class is full. Are they interviewing for alt list spots?

My letter came in a large manilla envelope. Thought it was an acceptance, but no such luck :-/

Here's the person who was waitlisted I was talking about. No one has been accepted since he/she made this post, so I assume it's not false information. I think the alternate list is basically an acceptance though.

It would take one poster saying "accepted" to falsify it though.

can somebody who is interviewing soon ask them if you guys are interviewing for an alternate list spot?

Hey everyone! I just got my tour dates!

If you are interviewing on 3/4 or 3/25 I'll be seeing you!

Previously in the thread:

This is NOT true. I interviewed there today and was told by someone in the admissions office that there are still many open spots and that they will be interviewing through April.

But I take this with even more of a grain of salt than the people who received letters stating the class was full because I have no clue who "someone in the admissions office" is because there are many people that work there that have no idea what's going on.

Accepted snail mail:soexcited::soexcited::soexcited: that big large brown envelope never looked so beautiful😍

1st acceptance:highfive: (interviewed early Jan.)

Chemokine posted this about a week after I got waitlisted (the letter said the class is full).
I interviewed mid Dec.

congrats by the way!

thanks Ferien!!

softmed, when did you interview? Are you waiting to hear back or on waitlist/rejected/accepted?

I had a bunch of mysterious red 'x' marks appear on my status page...with a bunch of things I supposedly need to do. Have yet to get anything from the office. Interviewed mid December

i believe that's a good sign! i got accepted and that's what my status page looks like!

There are four possibilities: Accepted, Alternate List, Hold for Spring Consideration, Rejection

I'm on the hold list, which could be worse or about the same as the alternate list.

So those who have been waitlisted received a letter saying that the class is full, although others who interviewed after received an acceptance letter. Is it possible that waitlisted letters just by default say that the class is full?

this is what I'm assuming as well

Well, I think I'm going to stick to my original date. I kind of want a spring break, and I decided not to spend the money to my West Virginia trip. I guess I'll see you on 3/17 lol!

I'm not so thrilled that I might be interviewing for a waitlist position =(

I interviewed 2/17 and was told by someone in the admissions office that it is still early (they interview through April) and that there are plenty of spots left

see you then!!! i am super excited to interview here! 😀

My status page went from being all green under the "Med" banner to a new additional banner under the med labeled "GMCB" and all of the GMCB options being red. I did apply MD/PhD, I feel it went well. Is this good?

For those who were accepted (even MD only) what did your page look like afterwards? A new Section open up?

Talk to me Downstate!

I believe that's a good sign. I saw in previous years they changed that page for medical stuff right around the time of acceptances.

Actually, I talked to my pre-medical advisor and she said that we should be fine. If a student is spectacular, of course the school will not just put him or her on a waitlist. And the bulk of acceptances are coming in around March, so since some of us will be interviewing in this month, we have some glimmer of hope 🙂

Great! Good luck on your exam then, as I have one on 3/11. At least I'll have some major tests out of the way before my interview DURING SPRING BREAK... aiya

i'll be there march 8! realllly hoping i don't get lost on the trains. i dont even know how to deal with snowy weather, coming from california

lol we just got a big dumping overnight (~12 inches?). But it should be mostly gone by 3/8.

Heeellz yea we did! 2nd snow day in 2 weeks! I think thats a Downstate record. Now I have the whole day off to.....study inguinal hernias =/

so i'll be coming from california as well on 3/17
...dumb question: what do people wear over suits in ny weather around this time? i assume a ski jacket wouldn't cut it.

As a Buffalo person (which is a much colder city) I just wear the suit. In fact, today it was snowing and I wore flip flops, shorts, and a t-shirt outside to walk to the store. It was up to 32 degrees so it was beautiful out.

Is anyone planning on living in the on-campus housing next year? I'm trying to decide if I want to or not...

yeah, i saw a bunch of red crosses under "gmcb" on the status page too. anyone else has that?

Yeah, I believe a new section opens up for health forms and stuff once you're accepted. I've seen it happen to a few people here, and I know I saw it a few times in last year's thread. It sounds like either acceptance or waitlist.

I don't have a new section or any red crosses and I'm on hold. So yeah.
