I got accepted to UIC, I quickly withdrew because financial situations changed and no way I could afford 63k - 85k/yr for tuition alone. Also, UVM, which I loved, but the area is less diverse and is a small town esp. coming from LA. I should hear back from MCW in a few days, but the rest won't tell me until December-January.

That's a cool bus service though. It looks like I would have to really coordinate the details of public transporation from Baltimore to Washington DC to Phillly. Google maps is showing it as about 2 hours. It's not so bad, considering I did almost 3 hrs to get from JFK to the Bronx for AECOM 🙂

Btw, I LOVE boy meets world, which is set in Philly. I still watch it and have all the episodes! It's one of the factors I'm considering whether I should still go. Stupid, I know

Boy meets world!
Great show!

Well, if you withdrew your only acceptance and have none so far, then I would definitely go interview at Temple. Usually people like a particular school better when they get the chance to visit and experience the atmosphere.

UIC is really expensive for OOS, and I understand your withdrawal. But if I were in your place, I might have wait out a bit longer to see what financial aid I might get. Maybe you'll get a 20K+ scholarships!

But sounds like you have quite a few interviews, so I'm sure you'll get in somewhere more reasonable and you'll like very well too! Good luck!

The bus line is just a suggestion. If it's inconvenient for you then you don't have to use it. Though I think it's a lot cheaper than Amtrak. You can look for other bus lines, too. Greyhound is pretty famous, and they're more ubiquitous.

In addition to UIC, I got into UVM, and today into MCW 😀

Not to mention looming tuition prices, funds for traveling is looking bleak nowadays, so it looks like I'll be taking my name off of 11/12 in a couple hours - and it wasn't an easy decision. Best of luck!!

Let us know what they say! I contacted them a few days ago and they just told me "no decision has been made for you yet" and was told I would hear some time next week, but i doubt it since the adcom is not meeting this week. Hopefully soon... like you I have been waiting a month and am trying to make decisions on future interviews since airfare is so expensive 🙁

Thanks for your input. Yeah, I could tell we're both in the same boat on Temple SDN. Hopefully we'll get our decisions soon. I'll post if I get any sort of answer.

Congrats! So jealous of you! Vermont and MC Wisconsin are great schools! MCW has great tuition rate too! Congrats on such great choices! I guess Temple will miss you.

So I interviewed at temple early october, and my status changed to "correspondence mailed"... since all of you that got accepted, the status said "accepted"...so I'm assuming mine probably means waitlisted or rejected? =(

Did any of you guys get this status? I know i'll prolly find out if it is a rejection or waitlist in a few days in the mail, but i'm just curious.

Unfortunately, you're right. I had that status and am waitlisted, sorry🙁 For all the people who were accepted it just says accepted and the "correspondence mailed" status means waitlist or rejection. Hopefully it's a waitlist though and then you'll have a pretty good chance of coming off in May.

Temple Student Shot While On Cell Phone

Gulp. This could be the place I end up getting accepted. I know I'm worrying myself too much, but this is pretty scary stuff. Who wants to study all day for 4 years to end up getting shot? :scared:

I'm a Temple Undergrad student. The med school is in an area similar to the undergrad campus. Here are a few things that will hopefully ease your mind:

- This incident happened near Temple's undergrad campus, not near the med school.
- There's a lot of security on the campuses themselves, as well as a lot of lighting. When you're actually on campus, you're pretty safe. It's the surrounding areas that can be dangerous.
- As a Temple undergrad student, I can tell you that the area is a bit sketchy and that you have to be alert. Use common sense. We are always getting emails from Campus Safety warning us not to use our phone or mp3 player while we're walking around the areas directly off-campus.

I won't deny that it can be scary but it's part of being at Temple.

Interviewed here this week. We sat in this fishbowl lobby, which is all nice and fancy. Then the secretary opened the blinds where I saw abandon apartment buildings with shattered windows. It looked like the grim reaper swept everything, but Temple away.

I don't want to scare anyone but the med school is blocks away from the main campus and is considerably more dangerous. The main reason the undergrad is usually safe is because security there is EVERYWHERE. That cannot be said about the med school. Commuting from your housing to the med school is the biggest obstacle. I am from Philly so I am used to it and am still applying. Advice to anyone who goes from OOS..... Do not wander off of Broad Street.

You're absolutely right Overfloater. I didn't mean to understate the difference between the two campuses safety-wise.

Advice to anyone who goes from OOS..... Do not wander off of Broad Street.

This is very good advice.

I asked my faculty interviewer how safe the campus was and he said "if there's anytime Philly is considered safe, it's now. It's like any other cities with crimes." I'm still skeptical of his answer.

Btw, traffic is horrible (probably due to the world series?), but everyone honk at each other for no reason.

Well said! The school is a quality school with a nice new building and excellent clinical oportunities, but, that being said, the location is horrible from a safety aspect. I would only go there if I had no other safer choice to attend.

Do you think a full year of physics would be enough or do the units have to total up to 8? I go to a school that is on the quarter system and when i convert the units (with labs) to semester units its like 7.3. Do u guys think this is ok?

Did you apply to Temple, they required that you finish your pre-req before applying, not matriculation.

If AMCAS give you 7.3 units and Temple requires 8 (do they?), then you're kind of in a bind.

You should still take the final quarter of physics anyway, in case problems later with your other schools. Take it ASAP!

Edit: Oh wait, I remembered for Temple, if you have AP Physics credit listed on your college transcript, then they'll count that. Hopefully you do!

my app is under review since 09/30 - how long does it usually take to review?😕:scared: Just tired of waiting😳

so my interview is thursday... flying in tomorrow...

philly transit workers on strike as of today...

fml?

were you planning on taking the subway all the way to TU? just take the taxi

for those of you who have interviewed already or are familiar with philadelphia area, any recommendations on hotels? what areas are best to stay in? do you recommend downtown/city center?

Thanks.

I don't know areas beside downtown/city center. City center is pretty safe, and you just have to take a subway straight down Broad st to get to Temple U SOM (past the undergrad campus).

You can look at your Temple application website and it has student host list, also Holiday Inn Express (1305 Walnut st) and Hampton Inn (1301 Race St) in Center City (downtown) that offer reduced rate for Temple students/interviewees. I called in Sept both and they're both about $120/night + tax.

I stayed at Holiday Inn and it's not bad for the price. There's free breakfast, which I love the cinnamon buns and there're free juices too. They provide iron for clothes, I didn't know so I brought my own, lol! The AC can be a bit loud, but if it's just a drone, so slept fine with it anyway.

When interviewing, you can leave your luggage at the hotel counter or bring it and leave it at Temple Admissions Office lobby.

You can park at the hotel garage at some fee/night (call them). The neighborhood seems all right, it's right next to the city hall (you can see looking down on Broad St), so the crime shouldn't be too rampant/out of control.

I just took the R1 rail (I think R2 works too) from the PHL (airport) to Market East station, walked 10-15 min to the hotel. To go from Holiday Inn to Temple School of Medicine (or hospital, which is across the street), the subway is straight shot down Broad St. Take Broad Street Subway Local (BSL) north from Walnut-Locust station to Allegheny Avenue. Current fare is $2.00 (exact change). Do not exit at Temple University stop – that is for the
undergraduate campus. Exit subway train at Allegheny Avenue and after
climbing stairs to street level, walk north on Broad Street toward red Temple flags three blocks to corner of Broad and Tioga. Cross Broad Street to get to the new Medical Education and Research Building on the northwest corner of Broad and Tioga. Enter building, sign in at the security desk and proceed to Suite 124 on the first floor.

The Temple website directions say to exit at Allegheny Ave, but I would exit at Erie station, which is one station after, b/c it's closer to Broad & Tioga, where the Med Edu and Research Building is.

I think it's pretty easy getting around by subway, so you don't need a car. Also, Broad st around 9 to 10 AM is a bit busy, so I would think going by subway is faster.

To help plan your trip in Philadelphia, use their public transportation website SEPTA:
http://airs1.septa.org/bin/query.exe/en?

Anyway, check your Temple application website, it has many info like student host list, Hampton & Holiday Inn info, and directions to and from Temple by car or public transportation.

There're plenty other hotels in the area, I think I saw Marriot. Just check on google or yahoo map. I wasn't able to get a student host b/c they're all busy studying for the Anatomy/something exam or away for their 3rd/4th year rotations. But the med students live away from the campus, so staying with them is likely not closer to Temple SOM than staying at a Center City hotel.

Yeah, you can always take the taxi, just stop them as they're passing by on the streets.

Mine took 2 months when complete at 8/4. Since you applied late, maybe it'll take longer, like 2+ months.

i withdrew today so there should be a spot open for 11/11.
good luck everyone!

Interviewed on Tuesday.

Tough luck for me with the transit strike. I took the Temple shuttle to Broad and Arch and walked 15 min to 30th street station. Please note that the R trains and Lucy Loops still are running).

One thing that bothered me is that the only 2 options for housing are Center City ($$$) and some suburbs (car required). How about west philly near Penn, Northern Liberties, Italian Market. I wonder why students dont live in any of these other places and I find it hard to believe that there is no public transit from Northern Liberties.

Also, my interview with Dr. Abed did not go well. He wasn't very conversational and didn't seem to like me (he asked me why I got good grades as though my motives were suspect). Do you think that my chances of getting in are killed and has anyone else had a bad experience (with him or someone else) and gotten in?

Good question. My interview was completely disinterested in me, and was actually falling asleep. I was waitlisted..

I've been under review since mid-September, and I also am wondering this...

Has anyone from the last round of acceptances received the acceptance packet from Temple in the mail? I'm itchin' to put down that deposit.

nope, not yet! my status changed over a week ago and I still haven't received anything in the mail.

idk if this helps but i was just able to click on the stethescope on the status page and put down my deposit...we may have been in diff rounds of acceptances tho

So, I wonder if they are in the adcom meeting right now figuring out whether we get in or not 🙄

would be cool to find out today rather than monday =/

No one heard anything yesterday? I interviewed so long ago I just want an answer!!

It doesn't seem like anyone heard. Most likely they will be posting mon.

Got rejection letter today! Only other interview/chance of acceptance left for me.

I'm glad at least they let me know. Interviewed 9/24. Funny they didn't update my online status to "Correspondance Mailed" and the letter I just received was unexpected. It's a bit odd letter is dated Oct 30 (day of building opening ceremony?) and I received it the Sat a week later.

I probably didn't do well in faculty interview, b/c I can't really hit it off with the faculty and he didn't take any notes on what said (disinterested?). I guess it's good practice and I know now what I need to work on.

Good luck to everyone else!

Complete in late July, 33/3.85 OOS, still haven't heard anything. Are there a lot of others in similar situations? Should I be assuming that if I haven't gotten an interview invite by now that I probably won't in the future?

Probably, I was complete 8-4 and got an interview invite 1 month later. Surprising b/c your stats are decent and higher than mine! But my rejection may mean a spot for you!

My situation was similar to yours when I applied and I didn't receive my interview invite until very early january

has anybody who has gotten accepted recieved the CBC(background check) email yet? The mail we recieved said we would be getting an email from them...is it just too early?

Just made my flight plans. $1000+ for the flights. 😱

It would really suck to get rejected after spending this much just to travel there.

omgosh are you going around thanksgiving?! you should tell them that when it comes to 'do you have anything to add' at the end of the interview 😛

If you're in NY, why not take the train?

I never thought of that. I probably would have gone that route if I had to pay for it. My dad gets flights through his business and has points or miles or something so he booked it for me and gets price reduction. The base price is crazy though.

Also, I wanted to fly in during the AM and then fly out at night (the same day) as this is right before finals week for me and I don't want to miss classes.

Zona, I think you hit your 1000th post on this thread!
