Anyone accepted got a scholarship offer? If so, how long did it take them to tell you after you were accepted? And for how much was the amount (if you don't mind sharing)? Thanks.

Is it me or does it feel like everyone and their grandma applied this year?

I honestly don't think the wait list is going to move very much, although I'm praying that it does! It seems a lot more people are applying so I don't think too many people have multiple acceptances.

There's always a greater number of applicants when the economy is in a downturn. Students see all sorts of successful business people losing their jobs and turn to medicine for job security.

However, I do think the wait list will move only because I heard Wayne (as well as several other schools) over accepted last year and are trying to be more prudent this year.

I'm OOS and planning to matriculate. I just found out on Wednesday that I was waitlisted at my state school. I really like Wayne state but it would have saved me a lot of money going in state! Oh well I guess. I'm super excited about moving and attending WSU though. Are you OOS or IS?

I'm going. The price is daunting but I know i will be happy here. I'm waitlisted at my state schools as well and my wife needs to find a job so I'm not going to wait and see.

Congrats and maybe I will be seeing you guys in a few months! Yeah I'm OOS and while I liked the school the price tag and the number of students that are not only IS but from the area and therefore will not be moving for school are both definite turnoffs (needless to say $ is #1). I felt like this school more than the others lacked a medical student community feel, which was surprising given its the largest, but again it's probably because of what I just mentioned about people living at home and streaming. Is there a second look for accepted students here?

January 27 was my birthday . . . unfortunately, it was not as happy as I would have liked.

Here's hoping your birthday is very happy, for you and for the rest of us!
that's so weird, i got waitlisted on my bday too haha.

There's a second day look for Saturday, April 10, 2010, beginning at 8:30 a.m.

Nice. I never even got this information. Is this in the packet they send with the acceptance letter because I have not received mine yet.

What are you basing this on? From what I understand of the situation, this year is pretty much the same as in previous years. That means there probably will be movement off the waitlist, starting after May 15.

Here's something else to think about: In addition to the people who are holding multiple acceptances INCLUDING Wayne, there are also people holding multiple acceptances (or just one more) and are ALSO waitlisted at Wayne (a friend of mine was waitlisted but was accepted at Case . . . guess where she's going).

Unless you know something that we all don't, keep your head up.

I received my information with a notice that explained I was being offered a "second look" because AMCAS had notified the school that I was holding multiple acceptances. If you are holding an acceptance at Wayne only, that may be why you didn't receive the information??

Spankz - Second look day is a day to re-visit the school. From my email,
"...we would like to offer an opportunity to revisit Wayne State University School
of Medicine and speak with our faculty, staff and students before you make your
decision."

That's exactly it!
The reason I'm hesitating to go is that at this point the only thing they could say that would make me choose them over the other school is that they're giving me more scholarship/grant money... and if that's the case, then they'll tell me regardless of whether I visit again.

Anyone have any idea how many they're interviewing this year? Last year they interviewed 1007 but I remember reading somewhere that they didn't want to interview so many this year...

Maybe they'll hold another one later on then?

All invites have been sent out already if you're trying to gauge your chances of getting an invite.

Is May 15th a standardized date for all med schools or is just Wayne's date?
Do they start calling waitlisters on the 16th? Or do you think they send out emails?

May 15th is universal... I'm not sure about the 16th.

I read the thread from last year and they started calling on the 1st Monday after the decision day, which was May 18th. I'm assuming if they follow last year, they'll start notifying people on the 17th. It didn't seem like too many got notified til later on in the cycle, lots more movement in June, some even happening well into July!! 😕

Think about it this way... Student A is waitlisted at Michigan and has accepted an offer from Wayne. A few spots may open up for student A after May 15th at Michigan, which notifies student A on May 17th at the very earliest. By the time student A is sober enough to withdraw acceptance at Wayne, it will already be May 19th. Wayne gets word, then proceeds to take what should be an illegal amount of time to notify waitlisters of their acceptance.

Last years day was also May 15th... However, I also did read that one girl got the phone call on the 14th. Yea, I guess they call... no emails, so make sure you have a good contact number for wayne to contact you. If you don't like the one you had put on your AMCAS, you can call Wayne's admissions office to change your contact number.

God, I hope I get in.

About the calling....Last year, they called for everything and there was no email correspondence with wait listers. I knew a lot of people on the wait list last year and they would have to call every decision date, not wait for an email, so I wouldn't assume that they will be calling after May 15th, but I'm sure its a possibility so if anyone wants to call them and find out, let us know.

So I emailed Admissions and asked if I can send in an additional LOR and the person replied with "yes we'll put it in your file, however, I don't know if the committee views these files often..."

What does that mean? It sounds like that they already ranked us or something and they won't be returning to look at our files (makes sense with 200 people on the list).

I feel kind of jaded now for sending them LOI that they aren't going to read

This is going to be a LONG spring and summer.

I'm trying to gauge the chances of getting in post-interview. I have on April 21st 🙂

They don't have rolling admissions so your chances should be the same as anyone else that interviewed 👍

Good luck!

k Im planning on writing a letter of interest to attend WSU, does anyone know who I should send it to and what I should include in the letter?

Did WSU come up with a drastically different EFC on the finaid page vs fafsa for anyone else? My fafsa EFC is 0 but WSU came up with over 15k. I believe my fafsa efc was so low because of the simplified needs test, but even when I run my numbers in an EFC calc without using simplified needs my EFC is much lower than 15k.

How do you find out the EFC for Wayne specifically?

Log into pipeline and from there click finaid and then I believe award overview. It shows CoA and my EFC but no award info yet.

Wow, you are quick! My EFC is $0.0, so no, it is not more than FAFSA. I've also been out of school for 1.5 years. Maybe that is why?

Dumb q but what is EFC?

Thanks! Yea I knew that the admissions wasn't rolling. I should have been more clear, what I meant was, what are the absolute odds of getting an acceptance once getting through the interview stage. i.e. in 2008 apparently 754 people were interviewed and 588 were accepted, so the absolute probability was 77%. But last year i know that 1000 ppl interviewed. So, using 588 acceptances as an estimate, I just need to know the number of interviews this year to estimate an absolute probability 🙂

I haven't even interviewed yet lol

Wow. From ~750 interviewees to ~1000. An increase of 25%? Are you sure about that? Where did you get that information?

UPDATE: Nevermind. I see where you got it from. And it looks like the 25% increase came from out of state applicants. The number of in-state applicants appears to have remained the same.

I do remember reading somewhere, however, that they were trying to cut that number back down this year. Here's to hoping!

Are you IS or OOS? I think that is where it makes a difference. IS still have the same chances they always had. It's the OOS who are affected.

Yea I'm OOS (Canadian). Fingers crossed.

The EFC (Estimated Family Contribution) you see on Pipeline is your EFC for need-based aid including parental income and assets. The reason your FAFSA EFC is 0 is because you are independent for FAFSA purposes. Need-based calculations for scholarships and Perkins loans requires parental information, and therefore, is determined based on parental plus personal EFC as if you were a dependent. In order to be eligible for need-based aid you need to have a calculated EFC of less than 18,000. Otherwise, you'll get subsidized staffords, unsub staffords, etc. like everyone else.

If your calculated EFC is 0 then you probably didn't enter parental information and therefore are not eligible for scholarships.

Just checked out the 08-09 thread. I think they send out letters to people who are waitlisted around May 15th, and it tells you if you're in the top-half or bottom-half of the waitlist. Dr. Foxwell calls people who are accepted. That's what happened last year at least. There were something like 130 people on the waitlist and 20-30 got in. I'm not sure if anyone was accepted directly out of the hold.

EDIT I MEANT TO POST THIS ON A DIFFERENT SCHOOLS WALL...DISREGARD DISREGARD

That's what they told you? Because, I have to tell you, that doesn't make a whole lot of sense. In 2008, for example, 588 people were offered admission.

They definitely take more than 20-30 people off of the waitlist by the summer. Now, if you mean OOS, that, again, is a different story . . .

Only 20-30 people 😱. I'm OOS (Canadian) and am really really hoping for an acceptance! If not, there is always the next application cycle...

Here's a question though: are there any other factors other than academic and residency (IS vs. OOS) that influence decisions? Like reapplicants, maybe . . . ?

guys im so sorry i meant to post this on the umaryland thread.
Sorry for scaring you all

To set your nerves back at ease, the stats from THIS school, (not my stupid error), some 250 people get in off of the wait list!!!

Yay!

So only 50 students who are accepted outright actually attend? That seems a little low.

Good point. I based that on the fact that around 550 ppl end up being accepted but I forgot to take into account that they over-accept at first. It's probably closer to 100-150 ppl off the waitlist. Good point. I shouldn't bother posting anything lol

Phew! I got scared there for a second 😛 GOOD LUCK at your interview!

According to the numbers in 2008, the acceptance rate for IS and OOS is the same, actually OOS was a little bit higher.

My impression is that Wayne interviews less OOS state people so there are less of us on the wait list anyways. However, acceptance rate is about the same for both, it's just that OOS applicants have a harder time getting an interview.

I had a dream last night that they took everyone off the wait list! It was pretty sweet 🙂🙄

Funny, I had a dream that I was sitting for the MCAT again and the computer monitor proceeded to try and eat me. I like your dream better.

OMG your dream is horrible! Yes I dreamed that I called them and they told me that they were going to take everyone. Then I remember being super excited hahahha!!!

I haven't had a MCAT nightmare since before I took it :laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh:

Do you have any other acceptances Spank?

I constantly have MCAT, orgo, and physics nightmares . . . even though I've long since taken them (except for the MCAT).

No other acceptances. I've determined it's Wayne or bust.

SpAnKz89X is my AIM screenname. It comes from one of my nicknames from high school: Spanky.

You know the one school related nightmare I have is that I didn't somehow graduate from High School or College and I have to take like all these classes. The dream of me in HS is weird because I'm really old and like taking Chemistry and I'm always telling the teacher I already graduated from college. It's sad how school really prays on our anxiety!

Don't worry I don't have any acceptances either, just 2 waitlist. So same here, but if I don't get in I'm going to SGU so hopefully I'll get off!!!!

Wait list season is just around the corner 😍😍😍
