at least for wayne, the self assessment guide clearly states that if you have a subpar undergrad gpa and have at least 20 units of postbac/grad work in sciences, they will use that as the science gpa.

Well, I'm just sharing my situation. Maybe I'm wrong with some schools, but I was just referring to my general application experience...not just my Wayne application.

Obviously med schools are not ubiquitous in the manner that they look at applications.

Anyway, calling the admissions office of your top choices and asking them how to improve is a much better idea than listening to me or forums. I'm just as perplexed by this process as everyone else.😕

oh, i definitely agree with you cd4plus. a lot of postbac work is overlooked in favor of undergrad gpa. not sure why, especially if undergrad gpa could be many years old for some applicants. i just wanted to point out that for wayne, it's (probably) not the case. but then even though it's stated in the self-assessment guide, it's hard to think that a low undergrad gpa is completely disregarded.

Got the email at 12pm and called....accepted off the waitlist OOS!!! First acceptance!!
Good luck to everyone else waiting, your turn is coming!

I did a post-bac at Wayne. They told me to do the whole 20 credit thing and get a 3.5 or higher and at least a 30 on the MCAT. I did 25 credits, all science classes, 4.0. 32 MCAT. But I'm still on the waitlist. I think they are pretty promising about weighing your post-bac GPA heavier. I'd disagree with a previous poster about Post-Bac programs not having that much clout. It obviously depends what program you go to. A post-bac at Wayne won't carry you very far outside of the state, let alone outside of Detroit. But if you get into a reputable program, the post-bac will definitely help. Especially if you have been out of school for a while. As he said, ofcourse, the MCAT is the great equalizer.

Whatever program he/she was doing where most of the classes are more difficult than a difficult science course at Michigan.. he/she should have no problem getting into a medical school. I'm sure many of us have gone to/still are at U of M. I can't imagine too many courses out there being more difficult than Orgo 2 or genetics at U of M. These courses aren't impossible, but from what I've been told, if you can get an A in those classes, you can get an A in most - if not all- medical school classes. Anything more difficult than those courses, and its probably at a top 20 program/ivy league and getting into a medical school shouldn't be a problem.

Congrats! Thanks for posting, it's good to hear that people are getting off the list.

thanks, may you be next!

Lets hope this movement keeps its pace.

Wow! The waitlist keeps getting smaller and smaller!! Congrats to all who have been accepted, I hope to join you soon! :xf:

P.S.

Just called admissions, they said could be about a couple hundred people on the wailist. 13 people got admissions today, about 20 this week all together. Seems like a good amount of those acceptances were members of SDN!

Indeed. The woman I spoke with said there has been a steady stream of declines going on, and whether that is good or bad, I don't know. Anyways, waitlist keep on moving!

Congratulations JMJ, that's great news!

Re: Seanshah's comment. Not sure if you read my post correctly, but more so what I was saying is that there is no way to know how hard it was to get those A's when post-bacc programs have the "inflated grade" reputation. Most of them (post-bacc programs) are young, and opinions about them seem to be general rather than specific. This can also be detrimental if you don't get the "A's", because they may assume you really slipped up when in fact you were just competing in a rough playing field.

But yes, most of the student body was from Ivy league schools...not that I think that makes an appreciable difference from public schools. A smart kid is a smart kid no matter where he/she went to college.

Never took genetics at MI, but yeah OCHEM 2 was rough but interesting. Our teacher was hilarious, which also helped.

I interviewed and was accepted at Wayne this February. Will be attending in august.

I came out of Umich with a pretty atrocious GPA and found my way into the Wayne BMS program.

I finished the BMS (got my master's, 30 some credits) with slightly better than a 3.5 (take out my first semester of 8 credits of B's and it is substantially better). All didactic master's level science classes, taught alongside other master's students/PhD candidates. Did well in the "hard" classes in the program. 33 MCAT.

I think what was said earlier in the thread "your numbers get you the interview, then the other stuff matters" is especially true at Wayne. I know my LORs helped a lot, and my interviewer was very impressed by my extracurriculars.

The program allowed me to get to know some of the Wayne Med professors, and I got two great letters, which I'm sure helped. It also didn't hurt that one of my profs was a colleague of my interviewer, and that a member of the adcom did research with my essay adviser. You can make the kind of connections that will greatly help you get into Wayne Med from the BMS program.

Wayne in the past few years has taken a good amount of it's own students from the BMS program, so if you really like Wayne state for med school, take a look at their BMS program.

I would definitely have to agree that that is a solid plan.

Congratulations and good luck next year brother!

Assuming the Office of Admissions works something resembling a typical 5 day a week, 9-to-5 job, the withdrawals that come in this weekend will be taken care of this Monday, and Monday will be the big day to wait for acceptances. This is what I surmise will happen.

Hmmmm I don't know if 20 is a good thing or bad thing. Seems like a lot of people already!

I'm hoping that not all 20 is chosing to go. Given that last year only 50 got off the list, we are almost half way there and 5/15 hasn't even hit!

Once again is this good a bad? Can someone enlighten me because I'm confused today 😕

i imagine it's good. definitely a better sign than no movement!

It's F and my brain stopped working around Noon. Okay so I guess it's good because it's not even 5/15 yet (well close) and the wait list is moving pretty fast. So that means most likely next week more spots will open up.

Since 20 people already got off, it is safe to say that this year the wait list is moving pretty well? Probably another 20 will move off next week.

Well I guess it doesn't really matter unless you are actually in the top 1/3 of the wait list. See this is why I'm hesistant to be excited because what if I'm ranked like in the last 10 people...I'll never even have a chance to get off!

i have the same lingering thought in my head. nobody knows if they're at the bottom of that 200. being in the top 1/3 would be awesome, even in the top 1/2. i guess the only thing we can do is just try to sit back and hope for the best.

But when Monday comes, aren't they supposed to tell us if we are in the top half or the bottom half of the waitlist ? That's what I understood from previous posts at least.

I sure do hope I'm right. At least we will have an idea of our standings

Really? That would be awesome! But I always thought Wayne doesn't tell u anything. I hope some of us will get good news next week 🙂

It is definitely a good thing! Since we have no idea where we are on the list and can't REALLY predict how many people will come off (since it has much more to do with the people accepted, not really last year's numbers), the more the better.

It can obviously be discouraging if a bunch of people get off the list and you don't, but that only means you must be closer and you weren't gonna get off any earlier anyway.

I am really nervous for next week and trying hard to not get my hopes up but I feel like we have all been waiting MONTHS and MONTHS for post-May15th acceptances and it is finally our time!

👍👍

I'm glad it's a good thing! You are right, it's more less person in front of us right? 👍

I've been wanting to be a doctor since I was 5...I think I've been waiting for 20 years now

what difference does it make if there is already waitlist movement? that doesn't necessarily mean it's a "good sign". all it means is that people who have already been accepted elsewhere are informing wayne of their decline before may 15th.

it doesn't mean more people are going to get in off of the waitlist just because it might be moving earlier than previous years.

either way, good luck to everyone. this summer is (potentially) going to be a rough one!

Congratulations! I hope more of us will hear good news too 🙂

Well it is a good thing because since it's not 5/15 yet, these are people who most likely have other acceptances. Around 5/15 it will be the same situation. However, a little bit after 5/15 it's mostly people who are getting off the wait list at other schools so they are 2 different types of people withdrawing.

If it were only the people who got other acceptances then ya it doesn't really matter. But right now we are still waiting on others to decided and others to get into other schools off of the list.

Well this was how I thought of it!

No matter how you frame the situation. WL movement is good...all I do is pray that it continues to move.

Yea, I feel you. For some reason I feel like I am like the last person that didn't get the boot when they rejected the bottom of the waitlist, but I guess that's just me being paranoid. I realized through reading posts by other people on the wailist that there is NO way to wager where we are on the list. The only way we will know for sure is if we get that magical email or phone call. :xf::xf::xf:

That is sooo true. I think everyone kind of feels like they are the last person on the list. More than likely though, you are not the last person (you just need to keep reminding yourself that). Keep your head high and stay positive...everyone keeps telling me that and yes I know that its hard to follow those words of wisdom but it is really in everyone's best interest to do so.

I don't know if this has been answered already in this forum but does anyone know if there is a separate list for IS and OOS?

I know its been mentioned before but just can't find the answer

I am pretty sure that there are two separate lists...but I am not positive at all. So don't quote me on that one hahah

Hello everyone,

I just declined my offer a few minutes ago, best of luck to whomever picks it up.

Big day tomorrow ladies and gents. Once accepted, congrats, and be sure to post your stats so we can pretend to guess where we are on the waitlist. Also, if you call the office to accept your offer, could you please ask how many students were pulled off of the waitlist tomorrow? 🙂 Thanks and Godspeed

HAHA i thought it was really cool too. i hope i had something to do with JMJ's acceptance 😀 😀
May YOU be next, u deserve it!!!! and you too, The Messenger (I know who you are- we met thru mutual friend F.Y.)

Tomorrow is so close! Good luck to you Sean :luck:

I'll call tomorrow and ask how many people have been pulled as well as how many people are left. I'll even attempt to ask where I possibly am on the list, at least top 1/2 or bottom 1/2...

Anyway, will keep you guys updated!😀

officially may 15th..good luck to everyone. i hope to see a lot of waitlist movement starting soon 👍

Good luck tomorrow for everyone ... All fingers crossed for A LOT of movement

I'm going to guess that they'll start notifying a lil later than the 9-10AM usual time since they'll first want to process all the withdraws from the weekend.

I don't think people should get there hopes too high for today. They might space out the acceptances through the week.

Ya that probably will be the case. But it shouldn't take too long since we are already ranked.

The waiting is killing me! I'm about to have like a heart attack today!

good luck you guys!!:luck::luck::luck::luck:
