This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I was in the same boat more or less as an undergrad. I stayed at my school, did a masters and rode that GPA into school. It will haunt you though... every interview except NYCOM asked me about the UG scores. Just say what I said "If me doing better as the difficulty of classes increases is any indication of my performance, i'll be even better in medical school" 😉

ya it should be intense but since your taking all classes that the mcat covers you should be able to do well on the mcat if you take a couple practice mcats in between and see what you need to work on

Judging from your grammar, I'd say adding a couple English courses wouldn't hurt either. It may also prevent you from bombing the MCAT Verbal section. Is English your first language? Some of foreign students I know have a diffucult time with this.

Its SDN not an english class. GEEZ.🙄

I did BS in Biology in Canada. Graduated with a ~3.12 average.

Right after I went to school in the U.S. for an MPH degree and am about to graduate with ~3.88 average.

I have been repeating undergrad science courses in excess of my MPH degree and earning A's (Anatomy, Physio, Organic 1 & 2, Biochem, etc.) in classes where my grades were originally C and lower.

I wrote the MCAT in Aug 2005 and Aug 2006, and did terrible both times.

I will write it again in July 2009, and hope to somehow crack the 30 mark.

I have research experience in breast cancer and also animal behavior & endocrinology. Beyond this, I have standard ECs like community volunteering, hospital volunteering, and many leadership positions from my undergrad days.

So what are my chances at DO schools?

so i was going to retake some classes over the summer (i've decided upon retaking orgo 1, which i got a c in, and retaking physics 2, which i'm like 99% sure i'm going to drop this semester), and i was wondering if it would be too late to apply as soon as i got my physics 2 grade. that would be august 15 according to the website. would i be able to apply earlier and then update with the physics grade? or would my application be considered incomplete since i'd be missing a pre-req grade? thanks.
aaaaaaaand in the fall i really wanted to take spanish, but was thinking that perhaps i should take anatomy or physiology instead. i only have space for 1 elective since i have to finish up stuff for my major, and they wouldn't even find out about my fall classes, would they?

As long as your pre-reqs are done before school starts you are fine. I believe UNECOM wants everything done before you apply (I'm not 100% sure on that though).

Hi,
I was wondering if anyone can help me out. I am currently a senior at RU, but will not be graduating till next Fall (AKA January 2010) I plan to take the rest of the time off, and want to apply for school for Fall of 2010, when should I apply? And am I too late to even apply?
I had a really bad experience with the school advisors, since I am not the best DO school candidate, but I do not want to let that get in my way of at least trying.
Currents stats-
GPA 3.1
MCAT - low 20s; retaking in July
Got volunteer work, involved in activities, have work experience, and 6 letters of recommendation. Now I am confused as to when to apply, since the advisor basically told me to not bother since I will never get in.

If anyone could please direct me / help me to know when I should apply or if I'm too late for this cycle I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks !!

i can't be of much help since i'm here trying to get help from everyone else, but jeez your advisor sucks. never get in? really? what a mean person to say that. if i've learned anything from reading around here it's that you'll get in if you try hard enough, even if it takes a while 🙂.

Which schools will i be competitive at and which schools will be reaches?

3.5cgpa, 3.4scigpa, (from the top research uni in Canada) 10/11/13/Q, honour thesis research, loads of clinical exposure in various hospital departments, meaningful leadership positions throughout undergrad.

also, which DO schools are known to have more non-primary care matches than the avg DO school?

The current cycle is for classes starting in Fall 2009. Applications for Fall 2010 cycle comes out in May at AACOMAS.

What is your science GPA? Is there an upward trend in your GPA/grades?

Yeah, definitely try to score 27+ on the MCAT to make yourself even more competitive.

I do not know what your advisor was thinking but he/she/it is definitely wrong about you having no chance to DO schools. You definitely have a shot at DO schools.

You are competitive at many schools. Your MCAT is VERY good and your GPA is right there on the average GPA for DO matriculants. Apply wherever you want.

Here is a list of schools with match lists from previous years:

I was originally pre-optometry but I am now having second thoughts and looking at other options. I've been searching this forum for quite some time now but I cannot find anything regarding my specific situation.

I am scheduled to take the MCAT on June 18.
Taking summer classes (9 credits of retakes) which ends ~Aug. 7.
18 credits of retakes for the fall.

Now DO schools have rolling admissions so it is in my best interest to apply early which I will be doing after my summer transcript is finalized BUT since I will be taking 18 credits of retakes...all C's and shooting for all A's...and I want the schools to see these grades.

Basically I want the schools to see my fall grades and I want to apply as early as possible. If I turn those 18 credits of C's into A's I am looking at a science gpa increase of 0.48! But I am worried that if I were to apply without those retakes I might not even get an interview. Is there anyway I can send an updated transcript and application after fall semester?

Let me know what you guys think!

YEah you can definitely send an updated transcript after fall semester. I sent updated transcripts both to AACOMAS and to the schools directly.

Didn't end up doing me a damn bit of good, but sounds like you'll have a much more substantial GPA change than me.

Hi, I made a thread in What are my chances forum and I was referred to this forum to get the answer to one of my queries.

I have 11 Ws and I am concerned about this in DO application process.

I have three withdrawals. One was in a science lab. They didn't ask about them in any of my interviews.

That's comforting because I have 11.

I have one withdrawal and in my interview at Nova, it was asked about. They basically wanted to know what happened. So I'm sure it varies from school to school. The withdrawal was in a science class. 11 Withdrawals sure is a lot, and if many of them are science classes I am fairly sure this would raise an immediate red flag.... If there is a good reason for these withdrawals, even if they don't bring it up in an interview you should still probably explain yourself... just because they might not ask you about them in an interview does not mean that they don't see them.

The only excuse I have is that I was having problem transitioning from High school life into College life. But, We will see what the future holds, I may have to do an SMP since I graduate in August and I'll have close to a 3.0 cum (currently 2.72).

As long as you have a very good reason for your withdrawals, you should be fine. If this all happened in your freshman year, you may be able to get away with it easier.

I've had between 8-10 withdrawals on my record. I was never asked about it in my interviews, but since I had academic problems I had to write a academic statement and it explained everything in there.

what is considered a competitive MCAT score to get into most D.O. schools, right now i'm in the low 20's, and I am planning to retake soon, but wanted to know what the benchmark is, so that i'll know to aim higher, thanks for the help guys!

Anywhere from 25-28. Schools like Western and DMU are around 28/29. Aim to get the best score you possibly can.

I could say shoot for a 45 so that you will be trying extra hard, but I would say that the average MCAT for DO schools is around 28. A few schools are higher, a few lower.

Of course, you haven't stated your GPA or EC, so it you are really lacking in one area you need to be higher in another.

thanks for the quick responses, I have a 3.4 undergrad, 3.2 bcpm, tons of EC's, including research, shadowing, hospital volunteer

Amazing, do you mind I PM you to ask some simple non-obtrusive questions?

3.2bcpm...for AACOMAS math is not included in your science GPA--just so you know.

I agree that the after Fall 09 GPA would be very good for you applying to DO schools. Applying in Dec would definitely be risky, but there have been success stories with people receiving acceptances that late in the application cycle. If you do decide to apply that late, go into it knowing that its a possibly you won't get in this cycle. Have you taken the MCAT yet?? or How are you doing with the practice tests?

Definitely apply early. Look at it this way. When your primary is verified, most schools will automatically send you the secondaries because you will meet the minimum GPA cutoff (i believe minimum is usually 2.7 overall).

From there on, you can wait until the grades are posted in Aug and update the schools with summer grades and then submit the secondaries. This will be around end of August, and that is NOT late at all. For what it's worth, I was only verified primary at the end of September and received plenty of interviews around December.

I'd advise you to mention somewhere in your personal statement (and/or secondaries) that you are "determined" to "improve" and are taking action towards achieving that attitude by retaking classes. That, along with your updated summer grades, will put you in a good position with adcoms. I wouldn't be surprised if lot of them put you on hold until they receive your fall grades. This way, they KNOW that you weren't just blowing smoke up their asses and you do what you say. After this happens, I would be very surprised if you didn't get any interviews/acceptances.

If you can manage to score 30+, you're in GREAT shape. But anything better than 27/28 makes you very competitive.

Yeah, I don't think you'll have any trouble getting in anywhere. Just apply early, send in secondaries with your summer grades, and you're good to go.

Thanks Rollo for such a prompt reply,
I was so discouraged for awhile that I literally lost track of time, and then got nervous for applications. But since the fall 2010 Apps come out in May, that takes a weight off of my shoulder, since I am polishing up my personal statement, and have my recs.

Thanks a lot again.

I have another question,
since applications open in May -- what should I have by then so I can apply early / be ready right away?
any tips for a jump start ?
My stats aren't the best, but I really don't want to give up on this.
Thanks a lot !

Send out your transcripts the first day AACOMAS opens since it takes a week to two weeks for transcripts to be sent from your school to AACOMAS. Have all your recommendation letters ready to send them out as well. You can also finish up your PS so all you have to do is just copy/paste it in AACOMAS. Start working on writing descriptions for work experience, extracurriculars, volunteers, community service.

And of course have some money ready for the fees.

thanks again rollo
i have work / volunteer experience as well as extracurriculars

should i try to shadow a DO as well ?

I am graduating August 7th, 2009 (after 5 and half years) with a Major in Biomedical Sciences and a minor in Public Health and Biomedical Physics.

Here bellow is my transcript totals as it stands:

2 Fs 1D, most the drops I recieved were in classes that I retook.

Total Institution 117.0 120.0 2.72
Overall 117.0 120.0 2.72

Yes, thats 11 Withdrawls, I got most of them at the beginning of my high school career with the last 2 in the Summer of 08 which I let other circumstances get in the way. I got the initial Ws with my inability to transittion from high school life to college life expecting that I could go through college with reading the book a few hours before the test and still get a 3.9. However, I just started realizing what mess I put myself into after reading the topics in this forum. Also, I got the 2 Fs and Ds so I wouldn't have to get more Ws; thinking that Grade Forgiveness removes it from the transcript, which I now know does not remove it from my transcript.

I am ready for your complete criticism, if you chose to give it to me.

Also, for ECs all I have done is be one of the founding members of a non-health related club and a Poker Dealer.

I plan on getting some shadowing in soon...

So besides the criticism, I was wondering if you can fill me in on my choices of Carribean school or DO school (I doubt I have the chance to make it into a stateside MD school). Also, is SMP my best bet to recover from my horrendous undergraduate progress?

I am taking MCATs in May 2nd, but I may extend it seeing as how when I graduate will make me out of the running for most programs in the fall, etc.

Any advice at all.

Need some advice....Im concerned about my sci gpa. Im a non science major with an overall gpa of 3.44 non sci- 3.66 and sci- 3.21. Im taking my mcat in four weeks!!! even if I do well what are my chances even with a low sci gpa? I have solid extracurricular and letters of rec. My top choices are UMDNJ-SOM and PCOM. What are my chance with an MCAT score of say a 26?

should i try to shadow a DO as well ?

YES! Please go ahead and do that as soon as possible. If there is a teaching hospital in your area, try to shadow someone there. That way, you can shadow the attending/resident/intern/med student and get an amazing experience/preview of your medical career.

Even if you find a private practice DO, then it's fine. Try and solicit a LOR from them too.

I think you will be competitive with those stats and MCAT 26+. What is your major, anyway? Don't sweat too much about your sci GPA. Counter the low sci GPA with 10+ on BS section of MCAT.

I think you should apply broadly though. Not saying that you won't get into UMDNJ/PCOM...it's just that this whole process is a crap shoot sometimes. Places where you expect to hear from never get back to you and places that you never thought would take you are the first to accept you!

Question.

If I'm retaking a couple classes this summer that wrap up in early August, should I wait till August to trigger my primary AACOMAS application? Alternatively should I put everything in motion in May and then update them with the retake grades?

These two classes will boost my undergrad sGPA by about 0.4 (retake 2 C's) and I'd really hate for my primary application to be filtered out because of a desire to rush out of the gate in May. Anyone have any thoughts?

I am kinda worried, i have a a Bachelor of Science, I have two really bad years, 2.9 GPA and 3.5 really good years, 3.6, my overall adcoms average is a 3.42 science GPA and a 3.52 non science GPA.....so I have a huge upward trend, I am worried though, I have a C in Biochem and a C in cell bio ( I was taking my EMT program while taking these classes and I was WAY to overloaded) I dont really want to retake them since I have alot of other upper level science classes I did well in (histo, developmental, micro, A and P, paristilolgy, animal phys etc.....) I am taking the MCAT in August, I am also an EMT and have worked and volunteered with an agency that supports handicapped people. do you think that my two C's I got in the last 3.5 years of my undergrad will affect me? Im planning to apply in May and I really want to get into a school.......thankx in advance

Thanks Rollo for the quick response.

My sciGPA after spring might not be quite at 2.75...hopefully it will be i might be a little under like a 2.7ish and since my preffered school is CCOM I'm afraid I might get screened out. Hopefully I do get it to atleast a 2.75 so I won't have to deal with waiting until after summer. So you recommend that I send my primaries in May? Im planning to take the MCAT on June 18..is it ok to send MCAT scores later? Then send updated transcripts after summer semester and after fall semester? How do I have my sciGPA and cGPA recalculated with the retakes?

Your overall GPA's look pretty good so I wouldn't worry about 2 C's. Good luck!

So your GPA is 2.72? What is your sci GPA? How are you doing on your practice MCAT? Which schools do you plan on applying to?

Rollo, I'll take any school that will take me at this point. I do not know which classes I should include as my science GPA since I've got a minor in public health and if I should count those classes in the GPA. My complete cumulative GPA is 2.72 with the 2Fs and Ds included, I haven't filed for my 3 grade forgiveness as of yet. I haven't taken my first practice test, but I've gotten through college with the knowledge I obtained from lectures in High school, I shouldn't have a problem scoring high on the MCATs.

something tells me this isn't quite the right mindset for the MCAT...

Let me get this straight. You have a 2.7 GPA because you got through college with the knowledge you got from high school and you don't think you should have a problem scoring high on the MCAT?

Go take a practice test and then we'll talk.

  • BS Bio (Canada), ~3.12
  • MPH (US), ~3.90
  • Have repeated some undergrad courses (OC 1&2, Anatomy, Physio, etc.) and earned A's this time rather than C's & D's (which would increase the 3.12 quite a bit)
  • Two poor MCATs (2005, 2006), will repeat in late July/early Aug, hope to score >30 :xf:
  • Research experience in several labs, health system research, hospital volunteering, student leadership, TA class, etc. no shadowing (yet)
  • Not a citizen or PR of the US (from Canada)

Sounds like you've got a lot of good things going for ya. Get shadowing, do decent on the MCAT, and write a good personal statement, and you should find yourself getting interviews and acceptances!

As long as you meet the minimum GPA cutoff (which is usually around 2.7 overall), then you will not be screened out. Anybody that meets the minimum cutoff automatically gets sent out a secondary (this is the case with most schools...some schools do screen...check one of the sticky threads in this forum for info)

You will be fine because you have an upward trend and you have other upper level classes that you did well in. Go ahead and apply in May. If you get asked about your C's at interview, then mention that you were overwhelmed. Otherwise, I would not talk about them at any point in your application process (PS, secondaries, etc.).

When you fill out the primary, you can indicate that you plan on taking MCAT in June. When you get the scores, then you can forward those scores to AACOMAS and they will be updated.

As far as your classes, you can indicate that you plan on taking certain classes in summer/fall. When you get the grades, you will have to get your school to send an official transcript to AACOMAS. At my undergrad, you could put in a request for official transcript BEFORE the grades are posted, and you would just have to indicate that they send the transcripts AFTER semester grades are posted. I'm sure your undergrad would let you do the same thing. Might as well go ahead and take care of it in May after you submit AACOMAS.

But of course, if your GPA isn't 2.7, then you will definitely want to wait until summer grades are posted. Best thing to do in that scenario would be to submit AACOMAS for verification 2 weeks before summer grades are posted. Verification takes anywhere from 4-6 weeks so you will have plenty of time to send the transcripts.

This is straight out of AACOMAS Application Instructions which you will see when you register for AACOMAS in May...I'm posting it so you understand how it all works:

Repeat: Courses repeated for academic improvement or grade change must be listed each time taken. Courses repeated for additional credit, but not for a better grade, such as physical education or chorus, are not considered a repeat. Applicants should list the original class as a repeat i.e. "Repeat" and then list the final time it is taken as "Last Repeat". All repeated courses should be coded in sequence. Please see the examples below:

Repeat Example 1

Fall Semester 1999 ENGL 1113 English Composition I: Code as "Repeat 01"
Spring Semester 2001 ENGL 1113 English Composition I: Code as "Last Repeat 01"

Repeat Example 2
Fall Semester 2000 CHEM 3153 Organic Chemistry I: Code as "Repeat 02"
Fall Semester 2001 CHEM 3153 Organic Chemistry I: Code as "Last Repeat 02"

Please contact the AACOMAS office ([email protected]) if you have any questions about repeated courses.

Repeat/To Be Completed: If you are repeating a course but have not yet completed it, code RNY in the type column.

Check the sticky in this forum for detailed list of which courses are considered science by AACOMAS.

You are taking MCAT in May 2 and haven't taken a practice test yet? Have you been studying for it? I want to warn you that MCAT is very challenging, you can't just "wing" it. Take an official practice test this week and see how you do (a free one is on MCAT website).

Your best bet is to ask in international student forum since most of us here are US citizens or permanent residents. You should also think about shadowing some US DOs. This is VERY important for you. Make sure you shadow them in US. From the looks of it, you should be fine as long as your MCAT is 26+. However, ask over at international student forum if you want reliable, and not speculative, advice.

I guess I should have phrased that sentence correctly. I have great long-term memory and concept comprehension that allowed me to wing it through college.

I have the capability of scoring high on the MCAT if I were to study hard like I am (I have the complete Exam Kracker's set (all 4 1001 books, all Examkracers review and audio osmosis, 1 TPR book, and 2 Barrons books and also the DVDs of the gold standard).

The reason I mentioned the MCAT in that manner is, I believe I can score well so I would really like to know my chances or paths I should take to get into DO school with a 30+ mcat and my gpa.

Grade forgiveness grades must still be reported as far as I know. I'd repeat the 2Fs and 1D.
