This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Well, Harvard was just her example. She has also been on the board of admissions at CCOM, so I'm sure she recognizes the diversity in D.O applicants vs. MD applicants. I think her point was that a B at one school does not necessarily equal a B at another school, and that they recognize that. Her "modifier" details were in response to a student's questions about how they distinguish grades between a student in a more difficult science program than another.

I understand, but my point was more that such methodology is filled with pitfalls. They're basing the modifier on reputation, but that doesn't take into account the factors I discussed (and a whole host of other factors I didn't). For example, you can take my CC vs State U to the extreme: you might have an adjunct who lectures at both Harvard and a CC in the Boston area. They may teach the exact same class (it is a real pain to prepare different lectures for the same class) and might, in fact, grade harder at Boston Community College than at Harvard (less admin pressure for grade inflation). The student who did 2 years at Boston CC and then transferred to U Mass would be pegged down relative to a Harvard applicant despite them both having the same classes the first two years from the same profs.

That's an extreme example, but it illustrates the potential difficulty in applying modifiers to grades in order to standardize them. Now they may well take into account CCs that have high transfer rates to top universities and weigh those differently than CCs with poor reputations. They might weigh grades from state Us with top notch research programs equally to Ivy Leagues. And maybe, on average, this methodology captures most of the does an adequate job. But I tend to suspect it is based on reputation more than anything. And reputation matters--it's been earned in many cases. But it may not be terribly objective, nor exhaustive.

I'm a fourth year student at the University of Toronto, with a CGPA of 3.78 and a SGPA of 3.79 and OOS or International (Canada). I scored a 25Q on the MCAT, have lots of leadership experience (student councils, board unions, college councils), volunteered a lot (>500 hours throughout three years of undergrad, at my university), volunteered at a hospital and a medical clinic, shadowed a DO and MD doctor, employed as a biology teaching assistant, and have a summer research experience.

What are my chances? I'm absolutely terrified of my MCAT score, but I have read that's the median for DO schools...

Oh, and I'm applying to:

PCOM
PCOM-Georgia
ATSU-KCOM

My first 1 1/2 of college i had no clue what i wanted to do and slacked in school and got horrible grades now i know i want to be a doctor and have gotten good grades since i have realized that. Currently my GPA is a 2.9, i sometimes dont even know if i can dig myself out of this hole i dug. If i do good on the MCAT's do i have a chance. I have a lot of shadowing experience and work in a lab. thank you.

How much time do you have left before you graduate?

It is definitely possible to dig yourself out of a hole (I did), but it is a lot of work. Also, some schools will still hold your initial poor performance against you, but don't let that discourage you. Keep getting good grades in your pre-reqs, do well in some advanced courses to display your aptitude for medicine, and do well on the MCAT.

Reevaluate your total application in a year and two (post-MCAT) and see what kind of chance you have. It's still too early to dismiss the possibility of going to medical school.

I always say that in a situation like yours, which was similar to mine, that you will also need to prove it yourself and not just the ad comms.

Good luck.

I'm loving the support....I thought this was supposed to be a cut throat kind of thing??

You might appreciate my position. After 1.5 years of college I had a 3.0 gpa, almost exactly. I pulled myself together and am now accepted to PCOM and will be attending in the fall. I have absolutely no doubt in my mind that you can do it.

It's actually pretty amazing how close your #'s are to mine. If you have any questions pm me.

I'm loving the support....I thought this was supposed to be a cut throat kind of thing??

That's the impression I got when I first came to SDN, but there are actually a lot of people on here who are quite supportive. If not for some of the people here, I'm not sure if I would have applied this cycle. I don't go for cut-throat, myself. ^.^

Your chances aren't fantastic, as many have pointed out, but there is a chance, and I only wish I had your GPA. Best of luck! 🙂

So i am appliyng exclusively to DO schools after shadowing one.
I have a 3.46science and a 3.019 overall GPA undergrad and a 3.00 graduate GPA in biochem.
I got a 31O on my MCAT and I was wondering what my chances are of being accepted to a DO program.. any and all thoughts are definetly appreciated.

Thanks for reading.

Hi everyone,

I would really appreciate some feedback if anyone can help...

I have a 3.88 GPA but only a 24Q (6P, 9V, 9B)

GREAT extracurriculars- President of TriBeta, founding Treasurer of Pre-SOMA, Senator in Student Government, shadowing a D.O. Director of Anesthesiology (meaning I get to shadow surgeons every week!), volunteer work, research, and I even work full time. Great LORs too. The anesthesiologist is going to personally talk to the dean of admissions at both NSU and PCOM.

I'm so scared of my MCAT score though. Will I even be competitive with that 6 in PS? I know if I take it again in January I'll do much better (I didn't take Org Chem 2 before taking the MCAT), but will it be too late? I'm sending in my AACOMAS app this weekend. Does anyone know which schools I might have a good shot at? I'm definitely going for NSU and PCOM but I heard NSU wont even look at my app with the 6 PS. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!!

This is in the wrong forum but I'd say your chances are pretty good although your overall GPA is pretty low I think your MCAT will make up for it. Applying this late though might hurt you if you haven't even submitted your aacomas

Def get your primary submitted ASAP, if you haven't done so yet. Your GPA is great, as well as your Extra curriculars, and you MCAT is only slightly below the average so I think you have a very good shot. You might wanna add a few more schools tho to better your chances. Good Luck!!

Truly the most helpful post. I was starting to feel like I didn't belong on this website. I'm getting all my app. sent off this weekend and then I'll hope for the best. As getting accepted is slim to none, this will be plan (b)...plan (a) maybe grad school

Good luck! And I am guessing what you may have meant with the plan a & b bit is that if you don't get in this cycle, you'll do grad school in the interim before you re-apply for med school? That is a very common thing people do, though your gpa isn't the factor needing improvement. Either way, good luck with what you decide and I hope it all works out for you 🙂 (and you should apply to WVSOM! Great school, great staff, great students...to top it off, an avg MCAT of 22-23...I'm only a LITTLE biased, I swear...😉 )

Need some advice. All my info is in, but I haven't paid to begin the verification process yet.

I have a 4.0 science and 3.43 overall GPA. I have a good upward trend. I repeated about 10 classes from many years ago and got As in all of them. MCAT 26M (V11, P7, B8). I have a liberal arts degree, good work experience, and about 800 hours of volunteer work.

I would like to go to TUCOM-CA. What are my chances this late in the game? My MCAT is weak, but I never reviewed or took a single practice test, so I think I could improve this area significantly if I waited out another year. I understand it's late in the application cycle anyway. If not at TUCOM-CA, would I have a good shot at other schools? Or should I just wait until next year?

I would wait, I know its tough to do but its prolly late enough in the game. But you could probably get accepted this cycle if you tried. If you up'd your MCAT you would have a shot at MD too if you wanted in all reality, unless your a CA resident.

Not applying this cycle but the next.....

Applying this cycle:

Current: BA in General Science; cGPA 3.74, sGPA 3.64 should graduate magna cum laude (if that means anything)

Associates degree in art; cGPA > 3.0 (I think 3.4 or something)

MCAT (7/31) VR 8, PS 9, BS 8 = 25L
(9/10) VR 9, PS 8, BS 10 = 27M

I did not finish the BS section in 7/31; I did not answer the last passage and set of discrete questions. PS on 9/10 bugs me, but happy with a bump in VR.

I have a letter from a DO, 1000 hours of shadowing in primary care, additional shadowing in sub specialties, and current research in both bench and clinical settings. Volunteer experience as well.

I submitted my application on 9/8, so verification around 11/3👎. I applied to 13 (DO) schools hoping one picks me up.

So, what do you think:

PCOM both
LECOM both
PNUHS
OUCOM
WC (the new one)
WVOM
NYCOM - touro as well
UNEOM
UMDNJSOM
Pikeville

Make sure you have the LOR requirements for some of these schools so that when you get your secondaries you can supplement those quickly. Do the secondaries now too. I think that you should be able to get in somewhere tho. Dont short sell yourself tho and just try to get in anywhere. You could probably get into your TOP choice if you applied early. Best of luck.

Thank you for the quick response. I have a committee letter and several LORs from MDs, but I don't want to inundate the schools with several LORs. I have been trying to get most of the prompts done ahead of time - just cut, paste and pay - :xf:

No Do LOR tho? Make sure that doesn't cut you out of contention for some of those schools.

And no MSU?!?! Bad taste. tsk tsk tsk. :meanie:

(Just kidding the OOS tuition is ludicrous)

So I know this is for 2010 but I plan on applying next May and there is no thread for that yet haha.

Cum GPA = 3.2
Science GPA = 3.4
MCAT = 33S
Undergraduate degree: BA in Physiology

Extracurriculars:
-2 years volunteer research at an Alzheimer's Research Lab (2 publications pending)
-1 year paid research at Pharmacology lab at the medical school of the state university
-300 hours volunteering in Emergency Department of local hospital
-50 hours shadowing Physician Assistant in Emergency Department
-100 hours volunteering in critical care unit of a local hospital
-Officer and founding member of Undergraduate Physiology Club at my university
-1 semester as a TA for upper division Genetics Lab
-member of All Campus Elections Commission (General campus student election stuff)

Letters: A few from science professors, a clinical researcher, a Psychiatrist (MD), PA, and pre-health adviser

I feel that my MCAT and extracurriculars are pretty good but I am really worried about that GPA because it includes some retakes also. Damn freshman year! 👎

Think if I get my AACOMAS in at the beginning of May of 2010 and apply broadly and early that I will have a chance?

Are you planning on applying MD? or D.O? Definitely apply as early as possible, but I would say overall your application sounds like a shoo-in for D.O school. For MD, I know people that have gotten in with lower GPA's who have shown upward trends in their grades from Freshman through Senior year, so you have a shot if you apply early.

Goodluck! Don't stress too much. You still have a lot of time to work on your application/resume. If you have the time, and want to go MD, maybe you could retake a few classes you didn't feel you did that great in to improve your science GPA? It may take some stress off of you in the long run!

Hey thanks for the reply. I am heavily leaning toward applying for DO because I am starting to get the feeling that I might like the way these programs are run a little better.

I was considering doing a strong linkage SMP like EVMS or USF since I will have a gap year anyway so if I got in to an allo school I wouldn't be against it but who knows I guess.

Hey guys. I am new to this thing and just wanted to get a feel for what others thought of my chances for matriculation in 2010.
My Stats:
cGPA: 3.70
sGPA: 3.8
MCAT: Bio 11; VR 10; PS 10; WR M; Total 31M

I have worked for over 3 years as an ER tech and i worked on an ambulance for 6 months. I did a 2 year mission for my church in Venezuela and speak fluent Spanish. I was also a collegiate All-American water polo player. I have a great DO letter of rec from a doc i work with.
I know my stats look pretty good but i have some issues. I took gen bio and gen chem at a community college but got all A's. Ochem and physics i took at at a UC and got all A's, so I showed that i can score good grades at a four year. I have 3 w's all of which are well explained. For the classes i got w's in and retook i got A's. I am really worried because i submitted my primaries in early sept and dont expect to verify for another while. Will the late application and my other red flags keep me from admission this cycle? Thanks for your help.

Hi guys,

I would really appreciate some feedback cuz I'm reaching that point of deep-well depression (in which case I might end up coming to one of you for some meds 😉)

cgpa (Univ of Toronto): 3.62
MCAT 08: 27Q:scared:

reasonably good extracurrics and am currently volunteering in a hospital. I was shell shocked. My gpa is an upward trend with the last 2 years being the best. I have a PS done which I used for my AAMCAS but there's no point in me going thru with those apps anymore. I haven't done my AACOMAS yet though I did send in a transcript a few weeks ago (no confirmation on its receipt..I'm not sure IF they confirm). I haven't shadowed a DO because I can't find any here. I don't know if I should take a shot with DO for Fall 2010 because I did apply to allo schools last year albeit REALLY LATE (like Nov!) And thanks to the abysmal score, I wasted more dough on the primaries. I don't know what my shot will be like for DO so .. in your wise judgements, what would you do? Is it worth it to shoot for a DO? I was going to apply to DO anyway this year but I dont know why I kept holding off on it....

I'm currently in undergrad and not really sure what to do now or even next year 🙁

I am also worried as well as I have a 27q and I had a 6 in PS, 10 in bio, and 11 in verbal. Will the 6 severely affect me?

Can someone tell me about my chances if i apply now:

24N : 8V, 9B, 7P

I have 3.3 Overall and 3.6 science.

Normal Extracurricular: ER volunteer, shadowing DO, reaserch etc.

Honesty, you are competitive for D.O schools even with your new MCAT score (but i'm sure they'll ask why it went down), however, there are only a handful of schools who don't require D.O letters (but they still strongly encourage them). In my opinion, you really need to shadow a D.O and get a letter of recommendation to remain a strong applicant. If you could shadow a D.O and get a rec letter, and were willing to spend some money, you could apply to a few schools. Your primary won't go through if you were to do it tomorrow until probably the beginning of December at the earliest (pretty sure it takes 6-8 weeks), which means you wouldn't get secondaries back until the middle of December (but you could fill them out now it they are available). It's definitely possible to get accepted in Febuary, I just personally wouldn't spend a lot of money on applications if you are serious about starting school in 2010. If you are willing to take off another year, I think the best bet is to save your money and wait, and then apply as soon as possible next May.

Definitely a tough decision, just because of the timeline you would be on. I would also get in contact with your pre-med advisor and ask their opinion. I know mine would say to wait...but she is very serious about applying as early as possible. You do still have a shot! Good Luck!

CAn anyone give me advice to whether i have a decent shot at DO school with my stats listed above? I am non-traditional and will be retaking MCAT in Jan 2010 as well

I would say you have a shot. But it all depends on where you are applying to. Your cGPA and your MCAT are a bit low. But still good enough to get you in somewhere I would imagine. It also depends on how much and how you can describe your EC's. The LOR's will also come into play. You would have a much better chance if you applied earlier but you already know that. Let me know if I can do anything else for ya. Best of luck.

Hey guys I submitted my primary application back in September but I was waiting for was my MCAT score. When I was submitting my application I selected the schools I was applying to and paid the fee. Today I entered in my MCAT score on accomas/clicked on save. What do I do next? Do I click on pay and submit again or is saving just enough (how do I know if my application went through???)!?!?!?!?!

You have to get your official score sent from AMCAS and not just type them in for one. Go to where you got your score and send it over. After this as long as you have the rest of your information in you just wait to get verification. Get started on your secondaries and compiling all of you LOR so you can submit ASAP when you get secondaries back.

Hello everyone!

I know it's pretty late in the application cycle but I'm hoping to get my AACOMAS application done within the next couple of days and I wanted to know what you guys think my chances are with these stats:

Highest MCAT: 27 b8 p10 v9
Cumulative GPA: 3.67
Science GPA: 3.60

I have a lot of extracurriculars and leadership experience. Also, I've done about 600 hours of volunteer work...unfortunately, though, only some of it was in a hospital. Do you think I have any chance of getting in somewhere at this point? I'm not very picky about where I want to go either!

Thank you so much for your help and time!

Def get that primary in ASAP, since even if you submitted today you won't be complete till the end of November at the earliest. You have strong numbers and excellent volunteer work, so I'd say you have a good shot at getting in somewhere. Good luck!

hey!

So i sent my primary to a bunch of DO schools but at this point i want to decide ~4 schools to send my secondary too. I live in Dallas, TX and am deciding on schools based on a: quality/reputation of school, b: location of school (is it easily accessible, near a major airport), c: tuition, d: out of state friendly. So far i have received secondaries from the schools listed below. anyone have any recommendations on which ones i should choose to send secondaries to??

LECOM Bradenton

CCOM (Chicago)

PCOM (Philadelphia)

MSUCOM (Michigan)

Arizona Midwestern

UMNDJ

NYCOM

NOVA southeastern

ATSU-SOMA (Arizona)

LECOM-B: a great schools with low tuition. You will be near a airport and it is very OOS friendly. The only problem is that it is pretty new, but it has established a solid reputation already.

DMU: Very established school with a great reputation. They have a wonderful campus here and are somewhat friendly to OOS student. Flights here are ungodly expensive though for some reason.

CCOM: My personal top choice. It has a very solid reputation with great rotation sites, I mean its Chicago. Airports are close of course but the tuition is pretty dang expensive here, so 😡. As far as I can tell so far they are OOS friendly, Im from Mi and I got an interview.

PCOM: Not sure about an airport here. But I'm sure there is one close. They are fairly OOS friendly here so if you have decent stats you prolly get an interview. It is in Philly tho so thats sweet, as you can tell I like big towns. Tuition is less expensive than CCOM here so I think this would be a good second choice if you dont wanna do CCOM.

MSUCOM: Are you kidding? Did you look at the secondary for one and for two (more importantly) did you look at the OOS tuition. Go burn this secondary, you have better choices. No offense to MSU though, but the OOS tuition here is crazy high.

NYCOM and UMNDJ are both gonna favor instate or have a regional preference so you can keep that in mind. I gotta run, Ill do the rest later. But if I had to choose 4 they would be: CCOM, PCOM, DMU, and LECOM-B (Substitute LECOM-B if you dont like the thought of PBL)

Submit your secondary to Nova! No essay, which makes it a breeze to fill out, and they are OOS friendly... Also they are only a few miles from the airport and have a solid reputation. Good luck!

CardioPlus...How many schools do you think I should apply to? I was thinking like 13?

Earlier in the cycle you could probably have gotten away with less, but I agree and think at this point you should def apply to 12-14 schools because you never know what is going to happen and it's better to have a few too many options than none at all! 🙂

Number wise you are a pretty competitive applicant, but there is much more to a COMPLETE application than just numbers. You need strong LOR's (DO Letter), EC's, PS, etc. What you gave is not enough to truly estimate your chances.

Hey guys, thought I'd get your opinion on my chances. I didn't realize that it took two months for my AACOMAS application to get processed, so I'm a little bit worried about that. I've already applied to several allopathic schools and am on hold for the MD school I applied early decision to, so I'm about to apply osteopathic as well, hopefully I'll still have a chance even with the ridiculous processing time (why does it take that long anyways?)

cGPA: 3.524 (from an Honors College)
sGPA: 3.43
MCAT: PS: 7, WS: K, VR: 11, BS: 10 = 28K

-Research: full time job, 1500+ hours during undergrad and after graduation.
-Physician shadowing: 125+ hours
-Good LORs (don't have a DO, but am working on that now)
-Good Personal Statement
-Heavily involved in extracurriculars
-Studied abroad in Spain

What do you guys think?

What do you guys think?

In my opinion, you're in good shape for applying to Osteopathic schools, stats, ECs, and research wise, however it is getting late in the game. Some schools that require the D.O letter won't look at you until you get it in, so that is crucial. Also, a physician on an admissions staff at a D.O school once told me in her opinion, D.O schools take the writing portion of the MCAT into consideration pretty heavily (not sure to the extent of which this is true). Even though the K isn't great, the overall score is, as well as your Verbal (which is always a plus!). I think if you can get the AACOMAS processed quickly and return the secondaries ASAP (fill them out before you're offered the option to fill them out!), you have a good shot getting an interview at some of those schools.

Just a heads up: PCOM-Ga only has an entering class of 80 students so it might be hard to get an interview later in the season, considering when you would be submitting the secondaries.

Good luck! Just move fast! You have a good chance.

Thanks for the response! I just submitted my AACOMAS, but still have to get my transcripts sent in.

I'm bumming, I thought since most of the programs have later application deadlines, I'd be fine turning it in now (had to wait until Oct. 1 to apply anywhere because of the early decision contract). I feel like I screwed myself, especially for PCOM-GA (my #1 choice) 🙁

Just wondering if anyone could give me an idea. Thanks

You have a great shot even with the late application. You seem to be a well rounded applicant. If you have a DO letter that will help you even more. I'm not sure if your interested in MD but you would probably be competitive in some of those schools too. If you apply a bit broader than you would have with an early application then I'm sure you'll have some good success.

Hey Everyone!

So i know there have been tons of threads asking the same question as I am, but i feel like posting my own, may make me feel better 🙂 I would appreciate any help anyone could offer me!!

Im applying to M.D and D.O Schools

We almost have identical stats but I applied a lot earlier than you. You have a lot more volunteer experience than me though. Take that for whatever you want. I have 4 interviews though so far (CCOM, AZCOM, LECOM-B, and DMUCOM) and have not heard back from (NYCOM, PCOM, MSUCOM, and NOVA)
