How hard is it for a person that goes to a DO school to match into pathology?

Rotate at the right places and get a couple of letters from pathologists and I m sure you will have no problem. If you re set on path then just make some connections and you ll be set.

I don't think pathology would be too tough for you. I don't know their scores, but two of my classmates prematched into Pathology are large university hospitals in Philadelphia.

It is a Harvard affiliate. Not MGH. That has a big say. While it is still impressive, we don't know much about the anesthesiology program there. The best programs aren't always what we think of as the "best". I'm sure that person is also a very hard worker.

Beth Israel Deaconess, Massachusetts General and Brigham and Women's are all pretty much equal. Maybe Mass General has a slight edge but I've always been under the impression they are all equally strong training sites. Definitely a great match just purely based on name.

Pathology is quite "easy" to match into, relatively speaking. From my DO institute, I believe two people from one class matched at USC in pathology; not too shabby. I was interested in pathology initially; however, the job outlook is just horrid. Anyone interested at this point should read the Pathology board next door. The market has simply been flooded/inundated with new grads to the point that locum tenens have become the mainstay for most new grads. In the end, many end up working for 3-6 months and are forced to leave. If one is fortunate enough to land the steady path job, it can become quite cush; 9-3/4 PM with no call and easily $250 G +.

Good pre/clinical marks, high USMLE, good LOR, high class rank, away rotations, rinse repeat ... would be my guess. It's impressive, but DOs are very well represented in Anes, and matched in all ACGME fields impressively this year.

That LECOM match list is really good. They landed some of the heavy-hitter programs in the osteopathic world, including some very competitive fields, and some very good allo programs too. A pair of grads headed to St. Luke's-Roosevelt. It doesn't get much better than that.

The list could have been even stronger if it weren't for regionlization towards Buffalo, NY. There are numerous people that had the chance to train at top 10-20 programs in various fields that simply wanted to stay home or near a significant other. May I also add that University at Buffalo is not DO friendly and in fact one of the applicants was told "we don't look at DO surgery applicants. There's 1000's of IMG MD to consider before the DO's."

You are right. I think DOs need to stop "low-balling"! Go for what you want. If you are a good student and work hard, you will be recognized. Im elated to have matched at Johns Hopkins for Anesthesiology, but I also recognized if I had "low-balled it" and not applied simply because I "wouldnt be considered", it never would have happened.

Bottomline folk...GO FOR YOURS! Dont close the door on yourself! Work hard and it will be recognized!

Thanks man! It was a hard decision for me as I ranked Mayo #2 and would have been elated to go there. Actually Nish and I are facebook friends now! Thanks for all your advice! Maybe I'll do fellowship at Mayo...who knows?

Im curious to know why would it matter?

A few reasons:
1. AOA derm matches as PGY-2, ergo you never see derm matches on DO lists, which is part of the misconception that DOs can't be dermatologists.
2. Matching ACGME as a US MD with 260+ step I, great research, and great LORs is still a crap shoot (go look at the derm boards to see the heartbreaking stories of fantastic applicants who still didn't match). Ergo, matching as a DO would be crazy ... let alone two matches from one school.
3. The army is 'generally' considered easier to match for derm than ACGME. This isn't saying much though because it's a huge accomplishment altogether.

... This is why I want to know. Not being offensive, or anything else, simply curious.

anybody have a complete list for PCOM-Ga yet? Have read and heard of a few spots but just wondered if there was a complete list floating around there somewhere?

they said the PCOM lists wont be posted for a couple of weeks (are administration).

my bad, they listed internal med/derm, but they meant transitional year of internal med pre-req + derm

Must be the program in FL where it's a year or 2 of internal med linked to derm. All other DO derm programs are unlinked as far as I know.

TJ: I talked to Dr. Evans the other day, and I think he's got it all together now. I'm guessing it may only be a matter of time before the list is released. But I don't know for sure.

I talked to Patience and Aisha today and they said there are a few people who matched into traditional rotating slots who are still attempting to scramble into open spots. they are holding off on releasing the list until then, but they said it should be out before may.
