2009 MSW/MA/MS Programs Applied/Accepted

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Received my first rejection today via snail mail from Cal State Long Beach :-(

I was accepted to go to Smith College's MSW program. I'll be going to a clinical psych Phd program tho, so I'll be declining, so if there's a waitlist, someone gets to go!

I got a phone call on 3/18th after my interview on 3/13 that I was accepted in the Masters of Clinical Mental Health Counseling program. It seems like a great program but I am still waiting to hear from LaSalle, I got an interview for thier Psy.D program and am so anxious to get the letter.

Got into the MSW programs at Hunter and NYU (and Columbia). NYU gave me 12K a year.

What would make spending the extra money worth it? Hunter is a good school and the price is right for me as a state resident. But I am a little sad to be turning down the fancy programs...

Accepted to both Washington University in St. Louis and University of Washington for MSW programs. Which one should I go to? I know both are top ranked programs (#1 and #4 respectively), so knowing I will get a good education, I don't know what to do. I keep switching my mind on the two choices thinking it is the best choice for me.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I am visiting Wash U the first weekend of April for the open house, and have visited UW several times since I live in Seattle.

Don't worry, CSULB is surprisingly competitive. Last year I got into MSW programs at UC Berkeley, UCLA, and USC and was waitlisted at CSU long beach. so much for them being my backup!

Also, a big congrats to everyone who's gotten into schools so far! If anyone has questions about Berkeley's MSW program feel free to PM me.

Turned down NYU today, so someone off the waitlist can get in!

I was pretty surprised too as I thought my application was more than competitive. I e-mailed the program secretary to see if she could give me any info as to why I wasn't accepted and she told me that I had made the "first cut" but the professors I identified in my personal statement weren't able to accept any students this year. Oh well, they weren't one of my top schools anyway.

I do have good news though! One of the POI's from another school called me for an impromptu interview later on that afternoon. After the interview he told me that I should be "cautiously optimistic" and expect something in the mail by the end of next week.

I'm hesitant to name which school it was until I get the actual acceptance in the mail but I will say that it wasn't EMU.

i interviewed at umass boston yesterday for the MFT program, and it was basically a waste of my time. the program didn't wow me at all, and the faculty was underwhelming. not to mention being in a horrible building. if i went there, i would need therapy too!

I applied to Villanova's master's program. Did anyone else? Heard anything yet?

Accepted to Western Kentucky University's Experimental Masters Program today via snail mail!

Extremely excited as they are one of my top choices but I was thrown off a bit when they told me that I needed to make a decision by April 15th even though they won't make funding decisions until late April. ??!!??

The funding that they do or do not give me was going to be a fairly major part in my decision-making process. Anyone have any advice on how to handle this? I'll probably wait a week or so and see if I get any more acceptances or information from other schools before contacting them.

Thanks!

Congrats to all of you on the acceptances! That's fantastic! For those who get to make a choice- isn't that a nice feeling? 😉

Waytogreen, that's a tough situation.. perhaps let them know they're your top choice, and ask them if either an extension of the decision date can be done, or whether there's a way to expedite funding decisions?

In non-MSW acceptance news, I just got offered a position working as a med student summer researcher at a top-10 psychiatry department on a NIH-funded child psych project. 😀 This, btw, is an example of how networking will be extremely important throughout your careers- the PI is a psychiatrist who used to refer to my private practice.

They sent out acceptances more than a month ago.

The deadline for the program was March 15th, so how could that be? Are you sure you're talking about the Master's of Science in Psychology?

Wow, congrats pingouin! That's fabulous!

I just got an acceptance email from the Dean of admissions at Boston University. rock.

Simmons accepted me about a month ago and I got an acceptance letter today from Boston College. As BU is my first choice, it's time for me to tell Simmons and BC to screw. 😱

Strange though, to be accepted to all that I applied.

College of William and Mary-M.A. in Psychology- rejected
Wake Forest University- M.A. in General Psychology rejected
Villanova University-M.S. in General Psychology-accepted-waiting to hear about funding
Western Carolina University-M.A. in General/Experimental Psychology-accepted
University of Hartford- M.A. in General Psychology-accepted
Ball State University - M.A. in Social and Cognitive Processes-waitlisted
University of South Alabama-M.A. in General Psychology-had phone interview-waiting for a decision
Indiana State University-M.A./M.S. in General Psychology- waiting to hear back

I found out that I've been accepted to my top choice 2nd year MSW internship, with funding. This year my internship is unpaid so I'm looking forward to the financial help!

Smith finally told me what my FA is...5K. Boo.

I've been accepted to counseling MA programs at Portland State University, Lewis and Clark College, and WSU.

Does that affect your decision at all?

As much as I wish I could say it didn't, it does a LOT. Which is a pity, because Smith was my first choice, but I don't really like the idea of going in debt 20K a year if I don't have to. Especially given that there are other excellent programs.

Such is reality.

It couldn't hurt to let them know they're your first choice and that it would be cost-prohibitive with the current financial aid package. Sometimes schools find more money for candidates they really want to join them.

I got accepted into the following MSW programs:

Washington University in St. Louis ($35K for two years)
The University of Chicago ($23K each year)
Columbia (Will receive award letter in the coming weeks) => will be able to commute

At the moment, I am still wavering between becoming a private practice therapist and/or a professor. Which program would you say is better for me?

Yes... I'm currently doing two lines of research. One is how to contact the correct people about the cost of the program, and the other is whether or not I can withdraw acceptance (bad form, I know, but in my defense they are SLOW at getting the FA stuff out. And sent it to the wrong address.. among other things).

Thanks and congrats to you too. I hope things work out for you. Now, I have to make a decision. Two schools want to know by the end of the week.

Are you guys all getting funding through graduate assistanceships?

Congrats to everyone.

Congrats!🙂

congrats. I received my undergrad in psych. from PSU and I know quite a bit of people who are in that Lewis and Clark program; they all really enjoy it.

Congratulations everyone!!!

I was hoping you guys could also give me some advice:

Accepted:

San Diego State University: M.S. in Marriage and Family Therapy
University of San Diego: M.A. in Marriage and Family and Therapy
NYU: M.A. in Counseling in Mental Health
Columbia: Waitlisted
USC: STILL WAITING for M.A. in Marriage and Family and Therapy

So I have narrowed down my choices to USC (even though I'm not accepted, I'm thinking IF I do.) vs. SDSU vs. USD for a MFT degree.

Does anyone have any advice with regards to which MFT program is better? Which graduate school do you think is better? The only thing is, SDSU is a Master of SCIENCE, whereas everywhere else it's ARTS. do you guys think it matters?

Anything would be helpful, thanks so much!!!!

CONGRATS again to everyone!!🙂

i would definitely let NYU go and Columbia if you do get in and stay on the west coast.

haha thank you!!! My thoughts exactly.

Still debating though, trying to figure out if SDSU has a good grad school reputation?

Accepted today via email to Morehead State University's Experimental Masters Program with funding and partial tuition waiver!

Also removed myself from consideration for Marietta College's Masters Program.

I applied to villanova as well. I e-mailed them and as of Monday they are still reviewing applications and they didn't have an estimate as to when offers will be made. They are my #1 M.S. program, but another program wants me to let them know whether I want their offer or not but I want to hear from Villanova first....

I applied to Villanova's master's program. Did anyone else? Heard anything yet?

and yes I am neurotic enough to immediately call the department to find out why I was told on Monday that applications are still being reviewed yet someone posted that they are waitlisted...turns out they had just recieved my entire application (I apparently was missing pieces) and my (along with others) application is still being reviewed...

Accepted to Villanova M.S. General Psychology. No funding initially offered. It sounds like they have offered some people funding, and they're waiting to hear back whether those students will be coming and accepting the funding (or whether they can offer the funding to someone else). Apparently they started making funding offers in early March. Why would they do that if the deadline wasn't until March 15? Just goes to show ya, always get your application in early...

MHC programs in NYC:

Columbia: Accepted 🙂
NYU: waitlisted 🙁
Fordham: waitlisted
Brooklyn College: Accepted 🙂
Hunter College: Waiting

Ahhhhh I don't know what to do!!! But I am excited I got into Columbia even though I really really really wanted NYU.

Hey everyone,

I received an offer of admission at Eastern Michigan University's Clinical-Behavioral MS program via postal mail on April 4 and just declined it. So, if anyone is waitlisted, maybe that will help (the letter said there was a waitlist, anyway).

Hi all. I've taken a spot at the University of Chicago and declined admission at Smith (they are inflexible, y'all). Has anyone heard from the Hunter or Boston College MSW programs?

I'm heading to Hunter in the fall unless one of the other schools comes through with some miracle scholarship, I was accepted around march 15, with an interview a week before that.

Accepted to WCU. Trying to decide whether to go or wait and apply to PhD programs next year😕

Applied to several schools, but the one I'm attending is Fordham for MHC. Congrats to everyone!

I received an acceptance letter from BC about two weeks ago. And I just this week notified them that I declined.

In addition to my acceptance at the Counseling M.Ed at Loyola University Chicago a few weeks ago, this week I also found out I got into the following programs:
Northwestern University - MS in Marital & Family Therapy
UMass Boston - MS in Marital & Family Therapy
Columbia Teacher's College - MA in Psychology & Education, Personality & Psychopathology Track

Originally, the program at Northwestern was my top choice, but then I realized how expensive it is (like twice as much). I also am wondering if the MFT degree may ultimately be more limiting than a more broadly generalizable Counseling degree. I'm leaning towards the program at Loyola. The program at Columbia is pretty much out because it doesn't offer licensure (I didn't actually apply to it, I was rejected from the PhD program so this was their olive branch to me!). Although I do later want to go on to PhD study. I originally applied to Clinical PhD, but now I'm leaning towards Counseling PhD.

Any thoughts??

Accepted to East Carolina University via email from POI on 4/17 and waitlisted at Eastern Kentucky University via snail mail, also on 4/17.

accepted to CSULA
waiting for CSULB

Has anyone heard from CSULB--MSW? 😕 and can anyone give me any feedback about CSULA's MSW program? 🙂

Thanks...
