I was browsing craigslist.org, and came across this job opportunity for a DO with OMM experience ($100 per hour is approx $200k):

Brooklyn rehab facility is looking for a DO full or part time position. DO must be able and willing to do Osteopathic manipulation . Very nice and friendly staff, facility, location .
$100 p/h starting salary

100 an hour as a physician is actually quite mediocre. In addition, I question most any facility advertising jobs for a physician on craigslist. There are A LOT of things to look into with jobs aside form an hourly wage.

I think in some cases it's so hard to recruit a PCP that some offices are looking everywhere. Physician job postings are quite common on Atlanta's Craigs List. Who knows.

I'm sorry but there are lot of doctors such as pediatricians, internists, hospitalists, psychiatrists, etc, that dont even make close to $200K. So I dont think $200K is mediocore, I think its pretty high esp for OMM.

100 per hour gross. Also does not mention benefits.

From what I've heard on the interwebs ... OMM can be extremely lucrative if you are good at it. A lot of people open cash based practices because the insurance companies don't reimburse properly, and do quite well. Search 'OMT' in the osteopathic threads and you'll hear people's stories of docs they knew in NYC and such places making very good money doing cash based OMM/NMM.

Is it possible to do that +1OMM fellowship after a NON-DO Residency?
MD Residency and then the +1 OMM fellowship?

Do you have to have a residency in OMM to do a cash-based OMM practice, or can you do a family practice/OMT residency instead?

Nope ... you just have to be comfortable with OMM to do OMM. If you get enough of it in school and rotations and you keep up with it, you can just do it (assuming you can get the volume needed to sustain a practice). I wish there were more attendings on the site who ran OMM/NMM practices. A few weigh in on some of the old threads, but aren't regular posters. A fam/OMT residency should be good and remember you can always add a +1 year.

I just got the bill from my DO for my last OMM session. $184 for about 30 minutes of OMM. So $100/hr. is just over 1/4 of what she gets for OMM treatment. So yeah, you could get $100/hour doing OMM, or you could make $360/hour doing OMM.

$ 360/hr * 8 hours a day * 5 days a week * 48 weeks a year * probably around 80% of gross due to very low overhead - one receptionist and low malpractice = a rich doctor.

Don't know how common it is/what this doc's volume is like ... but that is a really sweet gig.

That's my thoughts too. Especially with the craightlist listing. I'm sure most overhead is going to be covered.

I hadn't thought a whole lot about the mal practice thing, but that's another great point.

If that craiglist job is legit and with a large(ish) group, the 100 bucks an hour probably includes perks like mal-practice coverage (which I have to assume is super low for OMM/NMM guys) + overhead covered or deducted in a way not to really mess with your bottom line too much.

Well she has no receptionist, so even lower overhead. Her patient volume seems to be pretty low--something like 1-2 patients an hour. But even at $160/hr with low overhead, she has a pretty sweet deal. She does just OMM, she is never rushed, and works very controlled hours. I should also mention that is very, very good at what she does.

But that said, I think there is certainly a niche market out there for people who want to specialize in just OMM treatment and you can make a very comfortable living at it.

The fact that she's able to charge that much makes me think she has the volume. The fact that she's good at it makes me think word of mouth/referrals will allow her to keep that volume. That + no overhead = nice. It's cool to know that niche is out there as an option for DOs who do like OMM. Do you mind sharing what state/city the practice is located in?? Or if the doc just has a website?

Her practice is in a suburb of Minneapolis.

I wonder if there would be enough support on the boards to open an NMM/OMM board??? I know there are a small number of straight NMM/OMM residencies, but I think there would be more people doing plus 1, people in FP + OMM residencies who use OMM, and pre-doctoral fellows. Hopefully enough to get a board?????
