* * 2010 - 2011 Application Season * * Post AACOMAS Questions Here !!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
For those of you applying both MD and DO, are you using the same PS for both applications? Is there an expectation that our DO PS should somehow talk about osteopathic philosophy? Or is that something to write about in secondaries or talk about in interviews? Thanks in advance!!

I used the same personal statement for both applications (I think the AACOMAS word limit is a little shorter though). No, there is no expectation for your personal statement to discuss your interest in the osteopathic philosophy - You're right, that's something that you will need to answer in secondaries and during interviews.

theres a whole thread about this somewhere in the pre-do forums... the md one is 5500 spaces vs 4500 for do i believe. the question 'why do' will come up in secondaries and interviews so not much need to address it in ps unless you really feel it boosts your ps. 4500 spaces is not much room.

AACOMAS just listed my transcripts as received. Does that mean it's verified? Do I have to submit my app before it can be verified? Thanks

in my application i wrote: Received certification from Red Cross for first aid/cpr. is there a better way to word first aid/CPR? or are dashes ok? like i also used doctor/patient relationship. is it better to say doctor to patient relationship?

if you have been on the dean's list more than once, should you put in your app more than once?

i shadowed a DO at a family practice, but also shadowed a MD at a nuclear medicine department. would shadowing a md not be a good idea to put in your app because you want to be a DO?

thanks for the help!

Under what part of the application did you list the certification?

Info. from AACOMAS instruction manual:

Processing begins as soon as the application is submitted and payment is received. No refunds are made after processing begins. Preliminary information from the College Designation section is computer processed and made available to your designated colleges. AACOMAS verifies that all required transcripts have been received. Once all official transcripts are received, AACOMAS will review the Colleges and Coursework section of your application and verify it against transcripts.

bolding mine

We know it says this, but many of us were verified in May well before we submitted and paid, so this information is not entirely correct.

If you are verified, it will say so on the first page and you will no longer be able to edit your coursework.

Sorry to ask this twice. Does anyone have any experience with schools being listed wrong under the verified application? They verified my SMART transcript school as "Babes-Bolyai" University in Romania.

Hey guys quick question, did a forum search and couldn't find the answer.

Do you list shadowing under EC's/Volunteering/Community Service? If so, what do you put as title? Shadow, volunteer, or what?

I put my shadowing under EC's, and titled it as "shadow".

Would a certification (pharm tech, CPR, etc) go under "extracurricular, volunteer, community service" or "awards, honors, scholarships"?

I put my EMT cert under EC's so I could say a few things about it.

In the CIB I saw only two of the schools I want to go to screen for secondary app based on GPA (CCOM, AZCOM). It doesn't mention MCAT screening. My GPA is fine but I haven't gotten my MCAT back yet and if it's not where I'd like it to be, I don't want to apply and get rejected before my 2nd set of scores in August. So for these two schools, can I still apply with my scores I get back later this month, but not turn in the secondary until the August scores are back (if necessary) so I won't be complete there? Do they send the secondary based solely on GPA, not MCAT? Do they reject anyone who is not complete or will they wait for the secondary (which I'd hold off sending until I had satisfactory scores) and 2nd set of MCAT scores (completion) before rejection?

For the ones I'm applying to who send the secondary to everyone, will they reject me before they get my secondary if my first set of MCAT scores aren't where they need to be?

So basically I want to add all the schools at once to save on money, my MCAT should be good enough for some, but I'm worried it won't be as high as I'd like it for CCOM. That's why I'm wondering if they'll reject me pre-secondary instead of waiting post-secondary which I'd wait to send in until I had new scores.

Plus, you can always contact the schools and ask if they screen based on MCAT scores. Most schools will screen you out if your MCAT is not within a competitive range, but there are a few that will screen based upon MCAT section score (most of the time with a score less than 7 per section).

Anyone else have a problem with their applications. Mine were completely messed up. (They have been verified and released to schools and now it shows the date and allows me to look at exactly what was sent). They left out 8 of my EC's, instead of hours per week for work experience it just lists a MONTH, and they counted my Physics 1, 2, AND lab 1,2 as 6 credits instead of 10 and forgot to list the grade! Then, said I never took physics 2 and was deficit 2 credits. Going to have to call tomorrow, but still nervous some schools will see it. :scared:

Should we wait until secondaries to send our LORs, or should be submit those around the time we submit the primary? And how do we know what addresses to send the LORs too?

i'd wait til you get the secondary. you could probably send the LORs as soon as you get the secondary, even if you're not ready to send in the secondary yet.

interesting... they left off 6 of my EC's and pretty much all of my awards/honors... i guess a call is in order

Submitted yesterday, then this issue cam up:

I am re-taking courses this summer, so I entered them as "in progess". Problem is my AACOMAS application the verification process will not begin until my transcript is sent. (These courses are being re-taken at a new school, so I have no prior transcript to be sent).

It looks like I can still change items on my application, should I enter a transcript exemption for that school?

Thanks.

well if it happened to everyone, perhaps its ok.

Hey it happened to me too that they didn't send a lot of my extracurriculars.😱 They sent 3 of my work experiences, 1 extracurricular, and 1 awards, So 5 things. Did your guys application get sent with just 5 things?

Yeah same here, 4 work experiences and 1 EC for a total of 5. Well i'm not as nervous knowing it happened to everyone, but tomorrow will be a pain.

i sent an email to them asking about it. i had 4 work exp and 1 ec too.

they're probably just watching SDN and laughing about us freaking out when they already know what to do to fix it.

Can you use Interfolio for both DO and MD schools? Do I have to create to separate accounts (one for MD and DO programs) even if the majority of the letters I am using are going to both types of schools (except for my DO letter)? How does this work? Thank you!

i have the same problem with the month being listed instead of hours per week... let me know what they say when you call them

Yes, they have none of my volunteering, left out a leadership position, and my honor roll. They only included a total of 4 work experience/EC's/awards. And as I keep looking over it I find more quirks. They said my hours per week was September.😕

I'm in exactly the same place. My sGPA is .3 points lower than it was when I filled out the application (GASP!), and several of my ECs/awards are missing. Hopefully this is rectified tomorrow.

I also don't know why, but, upon further review, they changed some of my courses that were listed as health science courses (but not to be calculated) to count toward my science GPA. I don't have any idea why that happened. It seems fairly arbitrary, but I guess they can change course classifications. What I don't understand is that I was marked as having a sub-3.0 sGPA in my freshman year, but I have no grade less than a "B". How is that possible? If I got all B's (which I didn't) my GPA would still be a 3.0. Hopefully someone can get this fixed. This is really kind of frustrating.

Anyone know if we submit our app with our MCAT score on its way from Thx?

Question: Why would AACOMAS change courses that are taught under the umbrella of Occupational Therapy to science courses? They changed my Anatomy and Physiology course, and my Pathology of Psychiatric Conditions course to science courses (I know the handbook calls them science). These courses were not taught by biological science professors (as they were created solely for OT students). They were taught as Occupational Therapy only courses, which carried no credit when I transferred to another university.

why does it matter?

Just to put everybody at ease. My application was also screwed up in the same ways described above, so it is apparently a problem with everyone.

So it looks as though I can still make changes to my application, even though I submitted. I forgot to add a few things under "extracurricular" activities, so can I add them myself, or do I have to contact AACOMAS to add them for me?

all this $ we spend and they make countless and important mistakes on our released apps...how aggravating is it that we have to patrol our own application! everyone call and give 'em HELL! 😡

They all sound like science courses to me, regardless of who taught them.

relax. its june 6th. there is plenty of time.

Well, it didn't seem very clear to me because of the way the application handbook is structured. While those courses are considered science courses, Occupational Therapy courses are not. These classes were taught under the Occupational Therapy heading, making them, in my opinion, OT courses. They don't have BIO classifications.

I have Medical Technology courses which cover chemistry/bio type material though they are not labeled chem/bio I expect them to be categorized under chem/bio.

If you really feel your courses were rearranged incorrectly you should make your case over the phone tomorrow (trying to correspond with them more than one way electronically, is painful).

Yeah, I probably will give them a call. It's just a bit frustrating. The course names are certainly science sounding. I guess we'll see what happens.

it is early, but it would also be nice to have some kind of confidence in the people "handling your future"...

Agreed. The earliness of the date is not the issue. The fact that we spend hundreds and thousands of dollars on a service that requires us to be amazingly precise when entering every single academic/work related occurrence of the past 4-6 years but still makes these kinds of errors is the issue. There is no excuse for it. I completely agree that I shouldn't have to watch the service so closely when I paid exhorbitant amounts of money for it to do its job.
