Hey beerog2003 and BlackDr2b, is Howard really selective on who will get interview??

Can anyone speak about the LGBT presence on campus? (Maybe current students?)

I've been debating for the past several days about whether or not to tag this school onto my AMCAS because, although I love their mission (it fits exactly what I want to do with my life), I know how minority communities tend to respond to us. 🙁

Obviously there will be open-minded people in the student body, but is this sort of acceptance emphasized in the social life of the school? I tried to do research on student organizations on their website and I couldn't find a LGBT group, but I did find a Bible Study group. While I know they are not mutually exclusive, I hope you can see my concern. Thanks for any input! And good luck to everyone! 🙂

To those who have an interview, when was your secondary complete? Thanks!

I'm not beerog2003 or BlackDr2b, but I can say for a fact that "Yes, they are very selective"... this is can be a really good thing because you don't waste money flying over there if they are not going to offer you an acceptance... so if you get an interview here, you have an almost 80% chance of being accepted... and if you are a woman your chance goes to ~97% (per the numbers below)... so if you are a lady and you got an interview here.... you are pretty much set on an acceptance unless you say something absolutely stupid at the interview (so you should be good).

As you can also see from the numbers, the chance of getting an interview is pretty woeful i.e. about 5.8%

The number also says, if you are not a minority, don't apply as your chances are even more woefuli.e. 2 out of 1553 (and only 1 of those eventually got accepted - therefore, you have about 0.06% chance of getting accepted if you are not a minority).

DancingThruLife, Don't let that deter you from applying here. If you genuinely like the mission of the school, apply. I'm a member of the class of 2014. I was a little apprehensive about my decision to attend, but now that I'm here, I wouldn't wanna be anywhere else. I feel very comfortable and love it here. And regarding not having an LGBT organization... some schools have it and some schools don't. It's just that no one has stepped up to start one here yet. If everything works out and you do decide to go here, it might be an opportunity for you to step up, and I'm sure you would get a lot of support 🙂. I hope that answers your question. Good luck with applications.

Does this "minority" include Asians?

USCTrojan11 I was thinking of the same thing!
I'm asian too 😀

Sending in my secondary a bit late, planning to send it in tomorrow. I have had the secondary for almost 3 weeks already. Is it bad to turn in the secondary late ?? 😕🙁

I realized my secondary was in my spam from Howard. I am about to complete it now but how will this affect my application? It was sent to me 8/24/10. Someone help please!

Interview coming up on Oct. 5th!! Any tips on how to prepare? 🙂 Thanks!

I just found this in the secondary email:

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
1. You must submit the secondary within 30 days of this email.

So, maybe you should call and explain your predicament and ask the staff for advice? I don't know how strict they are about the 30 day deadline, but it seems like you have a pretty solid excuse, so maybe they'll be lenient? Worth a shot! :luck:

How about middle eastern, are they minority? 😀

Dress appropriately and dont go in with a live-Bong in your hand.

In all seriousness though,

This page should serve as a guide, it's from previous interview years...

NOW GET TO WORK :meanie:

I think you should be okay.. i really dont think they're strict about this... I know that last year when I interviewed, the adcom was only stressing about
people who turned their secondaries in like ON THE DAY of the deadline in January.

Thats funny cause I'm pretty sure I can guess your ethnicity and its probably the same as mine. My dad actually has a GP who is Dr. Dang, is that you? LOL

ahhah if it's me..then I wouldn't be applying to medical school now would I ? lol...mhmmm but it could be my papa : D

Although you're late, try it anyway Doctora Lockett!

Try to email [email protected] ( Judith Walk) and let her know the situation.

I called the office one time because I had Letter of Rec issues, but they couldn't really do much for me and ended up telling me to email Ms. Walk. So give it a try 😀

Good luck, let us know how it went!

According to "the numbers", 114 total enrolled, 108 of which were minorities. That means 6 people who enrolled were non-minorities. However, this data also suggests only 2 non-minorities were interviewed. Sounds like a contradiction. Am I correct in my interpretation?

There may have been individuals that sat on their bid and matriculated the year following acceptance.

Yeah, you are right... the numbers do look kinda crazy....

There may have been individuals that sat on their bid and matriculated the year following acceptance.

That may be the reason, it's quite a large number of people that deferred until the next year then.

know your application. if you've been totally honest with yourself and the school about your reasons for wanting to be a doctor and attend howard, the interview will be very stress free. as far as mine went, i tried to make it as much of a conversation as i could, rather than a disjointed question and answer type of deal. i don't know if it worked in my favor when it comes to decision time, but it felt a little more natural and allowed me to relax a bit. more than anything, BE YOURSELF. they just want to get to know you as a person rather than ink on a paper. 🙂 good luck!

Hey Guys..I have a problem. I tried calling admissions yesterday but no answer...Idk what to do 😕

When I got the secondary I noticed that they were very strict about 2 science letters so I went to 2 of my Pharmacology professors from my post-bacc program to get letters from. After my AMCAS was verified I realized that they didn't consider my pharm class as science so my letters won't fulfill the requirement.

Soo...About a month ago I asked my Immunology teacher and Comparative Anatomy teacher from Post Bacc for a letter. They both said yes but I still haven't received a letter from either of them. I've been e-mailing them and they haven't been responding to my e-mails. Looks like I probably wont be getting the letter any time soon 🙁

The other letters I have are from 2 research PI's, 1 from my graduate advisor (who is also a dean of admissions at another med school) and a character letter from a former living president (which I happen to know through crazy connections). Obviously none of these fulfill my Science LOR requirements, what should I do since my science professors (immuno and anatomy) aren't answering my e-mails!!! I graduated college in 2008 so It would be kind of hard for me to ask an undergrad professor for a science letter...

Sounds like you had a good time. Any idea how many people interviewed with you?

i did! there were 10 people in my group.

Thanks for the help!! I'm hoping my interview goes well 🙂
no probs. i hope it goes well too!:luck:

email works much better than calling. contact Ms. Walk, and ask her if the pharmacology letters will be okay for howard. she will usually get back to you within a couple of hours.

any out of state applicant recieved an interview invite?

Just wanted to join the conversation.
I submitted my Primary in July, took my MCAT Sept 11th (no score yet) and completed my secondary late September. I received an e-mail from Ms.Walk stating that my secondary was received followed by an e-mail to ignore the previous e-mail because she accidentally sent it to 1800 students rather than 40. I am assuming it was received. I will contact her after the MCAT scores have been released. :xf::xf::xf::xf:

Hey Guys,
I am preparing for my interview at Howard on the 18th of this month. How did the interview process go for anyone who has already interviewed this year? Any tricky questions?

Don't stress. Be prepared to answer questions about your application and know specifically why you want to attend Howard. Also if you want a morning interview (they interview throughout the day) arrive early, as they scheduled interviews according to arrival order.

When did you turn your secondary in?? a while ago?? 🙂

Does anyone think it is necessary to send a thank you letter after interviewing?

No, but I want to send a "Please, interview me letter" to Howard.... do you think it's necessary?

I would be stoked if Mrs Walk is reading this thread, and says... you get an interview for pouring your heart out on the infernet~! 😀😀😀

In all seriousness, a Thank you letter isn't necessary, but if you send one, it wont hurt your chances but enhance them... hope that helps...

I don't remember when I mailed it but I was sent an e-mail from Howard on 9/14 that said my secondary app was received and I was asked for an interview on 9/22

For those that have been interviewed this year or invited for one, would you all mine sharing what your were stats were...(MCAT/GPA)?

Thanks in advance

Does anyone think it is necessary to send a thank you letter after interviewing?

some would say yes, some would say it doesn't make a difference. i sent one because i felt like it.

By the way, does Fela stand for Femi's dad? i.e. Fela Anikulapo Kuti??

Yes it does. He is my favorite artist. Thanks for the help by the way. I had been on edge about whether to send a thank you letter or not.

Do you receive an email to fill out the secondary? Or do you just automatically do it after your primary has been received?

For Howard stats don't really matter. The average mcat for students accepted is a 25. There mission is to train minority physicians and physicians who want to work in minority environments. You are asked for an interview if you can honestly show your passion to work in underserved communities. As long as you can do that, and have an mcat over 22 and bcmp gpa over 3.2 then you should be able to get an interview.

What did you write about in your personal statement? did you show a passion for wanting to help the underserved?

good Luck, I retook my Sept. 3rd

Howard's really dragging this process out. Has there been any more interview invites since early September?

Hey y'all. And congrats to everyone who got an invite!

I've been away for a while (not away, more like myopically immersed in my quotidian existence), but I was wondering if people could help me out.

I'm an OS with par to sub-par stats, and my Supp. was "confirmed complete" on 10/5. I still haven't heard anything back, so I'm starting to feel nervous.

Thoughts? Reassurances? Well-meaning but ultimately hollow platitudes and condolences with regards to a dream deferred

The worst part about all this is that you can't even CALL the school and speak with someone! I have a crazy fear my application just got lost or something bc I submitted my secondary 2 days after getting it in august but my AMCAS wasn't verified until mid sept and my MCAT scores didnt come until end of sept. I just wish I knew for a fact whether they had everything or not!
