2010-2011 Internship Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Anyway... I wanted to ask for advice here... I got an invitation to interview last week. In the first email I received, the training director wrote that she sent out an invitation to interview (the week before) and had not heard back from me. Guess the first email did not go through... so I emailed back to the training director to explain that I did not receive the first email, and immediately, her secretary called me to schedule the interview - date set!

Just a few minutes ago, I get an email from the same training director with a rejection email. "After we have reviewed your application materials, we are unable to offer you an interview.." what? I hope it's a mistake... maybe the interview offer was a mistake lol. This is a respectable APA site. Just hoping that this year has been busy-chaotic and not a red-flag.

So should I email the training director to clarify?

ABSOLUTELY! I would definitely NOT assume you are rejected after they already set an interview date. I would call, if you have a number, to avoid the confusion that can come from the hundreds of e-mails they are likely sending and receiving.

Fingers crossed the rejection was a mistake!:xf:

email rejection from Franciscan just now.....

I got one earlier today as well.

I called about the phone call that I missed on Friday. I thought it was an interview, so I emailed about the confusion. But, apparently, they were calling to reject me. I'm glad I didn't answer the phone.

Does anyone think that many sites are waiting until the 15th to notify us? I am waiting on 12 (none of which were mentioned on these message boards)! 🙁

If you tell us who they are, maybe someone will know something?

Still holding out hope for all of us...!

That happened to me as well, only they had tried to email me though i guess my email was bouncing their letter back (hope that hasnt happened with other sites!!) and they called and left mea vm saying they were not asking me for an interview. i think it stung a little more getting the phone call.

sorry it didnt work out for you!

Thank you guys. I will contact the training director. I remember reading in last year's internship thread that someone got invited initially then disinvited. Ouch.

Jeannebean... If I remember correctly, you were waiting on BU multicultural? Did you hear back from them?

The APPIC regulation states that sites must send out responses to all applicants who submitted complete applications by the notification date. With all the applications in this year, it's probably not likely but I wish I got rejections early so I could have applied to more sites!

I hope that sites could notify us of our interview status through the APPIC application portal/website... it would be a travesty if a student does not get an interview because the TD typed in the wrong email address and never received the invitation...

I'm almost terrified to write this post because I'm not sure I want to know the answer, but I'm gonna bite it and post --

Has anyone heard from Trinitas, UMDNJ (Newark), or Greystone Psychiatric yet?

Thanks in advance for your response -- I will now go back to refreshing my email inbox and this forum.:scared:

I didn't apply to any of those sites. I just want you to know you're not alone in refreshing e-mail. I'm driving myself crazy today. Even though I have an IM program that automatically notifies me when I get e-mails, I've been going ahead and checking my inbox(es) periodically anyway. Argh! I almost want to put myself on a no-internet restriction until midnight tomorrow! 😱

I am also waiting on those 3 and UMDNJ Piscataway plus a bunch of others. I'm pretending no news is still good news.

Has anyone gotten interviews at college counseling centers without prior experience in a counseling center? Someone in my cohort applied to several and has significant teaching experience, experience supervising undergraduate research assistants, and has had multiple undergrad clients in our university training clinic but has gotten rejected from every counseling center he applied to. Is this typical?

that is correct they have to notify you by the date THEY post. i just wanted to make sure that was clear as i know some people have assumed the 15th is universal when in fact it is not (its popular and suggested though i know a few friends who are waiting on notification dates around the 20th).

i agree about the appic portal though, it would be great if they came in that way.

I applied to UMDNJ-Newark too and haven't heard anything back either. I know of at least one other person who also hasn't heard back from them. They required so many supplemental materials though I could understand it taking them awhile to read through them all!

lol my fingers have been crossed since November... it's going to permanently stay that way the longer this thing goes on!:xf:

Thanks!

Hey all. I just wanted to say that knowing whether or not other people have heard from a particular site may or may not be helpful. For instance, I have read so far this morning that one of the sites from which I am still waiting to hear has already sent out both rejections and offers. Knowing that gives me absolutely no indication as to my status until I get a letter myself, and I cannot call to find out until the 16th. I know we're all just wanting to know SOMEthing, but sometimes this guessing game makes us more anxious than we need to be. For what it's worth.

Good luck to all of us! :luck:

a) i'm supposed to be scoring a rorschach right now and this whole D-day feel to today is really messing with my concentration. 😱

b) i am still waiting to hear from BU multicultural. I think there were a couple of people posting earlier on the thread about hearing from them already with offers. are any of you out there still waiting / got rejections from there?

c) also, napa state hospital. has anyone heard one way or another from them?

here's my updated list. still waiting on 6 sites...

interviews:
Vanderbilt
UAB
Lexington VA
James Quillen VA
NF/SG VA
South Miss Psych Consortium
SE LA (NOLA) VA

rejections:
James Haley
Bay Pines
Emory-neuro
UF

I know that Gulf Coast VA (in Biloxi) has until 12/30 as their notification date for those of you still waiting to hear.

Jeannebean... If I remember correctly, you were waiting on BU multicultural? Did you hear back from them?

I haven't heard back from them...but I really don't think I will get an invite so I am anticipating a rejection. But it would be nice to know either way....

PS, or D) it is my understanding that sites are not MANDATED to contact us by their stated notification date. it is only a suggested practice by APPIC to set a date and to notify by that date. There have been many cases where sites have not contacted by their prescribed notification date - so it's not all a lost cause after the 15th.

I read on this thread that there were two interviews in December...

From past accounts of those who interviewed there, they interviewed in January. I don't know if they interview people based on distance... or so I hope...

after all the wait...rejection from Cambridge Health Alliance 🙁

that is rough! i hope that your frustration and possible emotional exhaustion doesnt inadvertently elevate their SCON, WSUM6, or perceptual reasoning indexes!!

good luck though!!! (on the interviews and the rorschach)

It's amazing how unproductive this waiting is making me (and many others out there). It's so hard to get work done when you're anxious, and there doesn't seem to be any way to lose the anxiety until we all find out.

Thanks everyone for your support -- fingers still crossed!

Just received an email rejection from BU multicultural. Hope you have better luck!

It depends on the site, but I would say counseling centers tend to require experience with the exact population, moreso than a place like a VA or a CMHC. I applied to a couple of consortiums that happened to have counseling rotations and I received 1 counseling interview, though it was clear early on that I had ZERO shot, since everyone else there had extensive experience working in college counseling centers. I was more interested in a non-counseling center position they had....but that too was ridiculously competitive, so I resigned myself to enjoying some good local food and entertainment.

I haven't heard from Trinitas either. Ach. Cambridge and BU rejections.

Rejection from UNC....at least I finally heard, I suppose 🙂

Was hoping for some good news today, but none yet. First thing this morning, I got an email rejection from UCSD/VA. It was strange, with a subject line of "nonselection notification" and it was from "Internship application"... needless to say, I knew it was a rejection but didn't know who it was from until after I opened it. Then, just a few minutes ago, I received a second email from UCSD/VA... another rejection. The difference was that this one identified that it was from UCSD/VA--but it was the exact same rejection. As if one was not enough!

I also got a rejection from the VA Sepulveda. One of my peers received an interview there, though. That's all the news I have for now... so wishing I would just know, so I could focus on finishing up this semester's work! 😱

Rejections from UMD CC, Springfield Hospital, & D.C.VA

Rejection from UMASS Worcester just now. I'm not at all surprised--it really wasn't the best fit for me, but the location was too good to pass up (my parents live about 30 minutes from there). It was worth a try. 😛

Frick. You know when after applying you realize that maybe you applied to too many competitive sites? But you still like the not-as-competitive ones also? But then you get rejections from some of them too? That just happened. 😡 Obviously there are no "safety" programs but... I'm ready for this to be over now.

I haven't heard from Greystone or Ancora for that matter....

Yeah, I tried to apply to more programs I felt would be less competitive and have received rejections from just as many of them as the more competitive ones. That's the way the cookie crumbles sometimes....

Can I ask why you think that would matter much in terms of rejections/acceptances for internship sites?

I was just curious and wondered if the types of sites that counseling psych students typically apply to are a different type of site than clinical psych students...and if there are differences in the type of competitiveness that counseling versus clinical students experience...just trying to make sense of it all.

People are probably tired of me saying it, but it really is about fit. When I applied, I was contacted by a site that I considered a "backup", and they told me that I was a great applicant....but since I had no experience with their speciality population, they couldn't recommend me for interview. It was one of my first rejections, so it freaked me out. I ended up doing fine, but it was still a shock at the time.

I completely agree. First a round of rejections from "safety" programs. Then a round from competitive ones. There were sites I didn't even know were competitive-- I guess they were too good of a fit to be true. 🙁 Still crossing my fingers for those that are out! Good luck. At least in a couple of years we'll be able to NEVER think about this day again. In fact, I think today is going into my top 10 most stressful days in my life.

gotten rejections from UMASS/Worcester and BU Multicultural today so boston is completely out 🙁, and an offer from Southlake CMHC. still no word on several.

Do your programs require you to apply to APA accredited sites? There is a PhD program in my state that requires students to apply to APA accreditated internship sites and their match rate is about 65%, on average, whereas our PsyD program allows APA and APPIC and our match rate is about 85% consistently.

Hi TobyToby -- I heard from Ancora on Dec. 7 (interview). I don't know what this means for you, but I thought you might want to know... (also, I heard today from a site that others had gotten interviews to a week or two ago, and I also got an interview -- which means you never know).

Best of luck :xf:

For me personally, even though I'd like to get more varied experience with new populations (e.g., inpatient, community mental health, child/family, forensic assessment) that would best be obtained at more clinical psych sites, I cannot deny that I am a much better fit in terms of both experience and personality for counseling centers. I applied mostly to counseling centers--in fact, the non-university sites to which I applied were done primarily due to where they are located, to be frank.

I can tell you that in the APPIC directory, there are many sites that list Clinical as "preferred" and Counseling as "acceptable," and some that indicate no desire for Counseling Psych interns. That narrows the list for us Counseling applicants, whereas I don't recall seeing any sites that indicated a preference for Counseling over Clinical. That's really all I know about that distinction.

I totally agree with you on the fit factor, I was just especially bummed about this less-competitive one because I thought I was a fantastic fit from a clinical and research standpoint too. One of those things where you like, "What do you people who fit with this program look like?" because I really thought I was one of them.

Hello all 🙂. I'm there with you all on the anxiety and disappointments. I am so glad tho that these rejections don't define who I am and what I'm capable of. The two rejections I got were from sites that I wasn't excited about, and I'm so glad they did. The problem now is waiting for the other sites to respond!

Anyway... I wanted to ask for advice here... I got an invitation to interview last week. In the first email I received, the training director wrote that she sent out an invitation to interview (the week before) and had not heard back from me. So should I email the training director to clarify?

ALSO - anyone applying to Gouverneur? Did you have to send work samples? nowhere on their website or the APPIC site did it say that they required work samples.

Gouverneur indicated in their brochure they required sample reports of both adult and child. Haven't heard back from them.

My counseling psych program requires APA sites for internship.

I just received a rejection from Hefner VA. Good luck to you.

Thanks for the info... gee how could I miss their brochure.

Best of luck!
