My PsyD program also requires APA-accredited internships as well -- we've had a high match rate for many years now (100% for the past 4 years, 88% overall). Even still -- panic rules the program this year.

My counseling psych program doesn't REQUIRE APA sites but VERY STRONGLY encourages APA sites so as to avoid problems with licensure later. I don't think anyone in our program applies to non-APA sites unless it's their 2nd-3rd time applying and they are restricted geographically.

My program allowed APPIC, but you had to submit a waiver for the site to the DCT for consideration. It was mostly for NYC and FL sites, since some people were geographically restricted. I personally think APA acredited sites should only allow APA internships (and let attrition happen), but that is an argument for another day.

It is still out there, though most sites understand that counseling and clinical students receive similiar training. School psych applicants still are pretty limited, though there are sites that strongly prefer them, so hopefully it works out.

College counseling centers are pretty known for rarely selecting people to interview without prior experience in one. I've had the same experience this year with the five I applied to, even though I had significant outpatient young adult mental health experience. Sorry to hear about your friend...

I have University Counseling Center experience and applied to 10 UCC sites. I've been rejected by 6 of them so far, have 1 interview (it's a consortium, but the primary rotation is a UCC), and am waiting to hear from 3. I think this process is just really difficult for everyone...

My program requires that we apply to APA accredited sites for licensing purposes. Most states in my region require that you come from an APA accredited program, and attend an APA accredited internship.

I have a similar experience. I have a year of CC experience and one of my recommendations letter was written by my supervisor there and still didn't receive any CC interviews. I'm just confused by this entire process. 😕

Luckily I've got some great hospital/va interviews so I'm pretty happy at this point.
 
I have not had any UCC experience, but thought I'd give it a try. All of them rejections (i'm in a clinical program). Even though it's not necessarily my interest to work in a medical center or VA-- that's where I'm getting interviews from.
 
has anyone received interviews/rejection from UNC (any track) today????

I am a clinical student with a year experience in a CC. In addition, I have experience at a CMHC, inpatient, adolescents, families/couples, and substance use. Last year I applied to a lot of different types of sites. Without any exception I received interviews at CC or CCs located in consortia. This year, with no additional CC experience, I applied to 1 med school, 1 CMHC, and 23 CCs. So far I have interviews at 6 CCs and I'm waiting to hear back from 8 CCs. I really think how you market yourself and have planned your graduate training matters when it comes to getting a CC internship. They usually want someone with more of a generalist training and/or is looking for generalist training during internship.

And for those of you who are waiting for notifications from a lot of places: There will be plenty this evening and tomorrow for programs with deadlines tomorrow. Some will be interviews, others will be rejection. Same thing happened last year.
 
Just got my UCSD/VA rejection which I figured was coming... blargh :bang:

Also, I know someone had the Ann Arbor VA on their list of interviews... I thought they just had open houses? Did anyone actually receive an interview offer from them or was it just included as a place that you would visit because of the open house?

I received a rejection email today in which the body of the email was completely blank, but an attached document was entitled "RejectEmail."

Don't think I need to open that one, thanks.

On a more serious note, I think this forum is a great idea. The application process hit my program particularly hard this year and it's helpful for me to realize that a lot of other people are going through the same thing.
 
Thanks all for your advice. I received communication from the training director that the rejection letter (after the interview invite) was sent in error. PHEW.

I'm glad I found this forum. Thank you guys.

Hope the supply/demand of APA accr. internship site somehow balances. Somethings got to change here. But you are right... this is for another thread/topic.

I got one with an attached document that said Letter for Interview... but it was a rejection letter. Bit misleading.
 
Ha, I received a rejection that misspelled the word internship. That made me feel slightly better about the bad news...
 
I received one rejection that was about 300 rambling words and ended with "We will not be offering an interview at this time, but encourage you to keep us in mind. We may re-contact you at some point. However, in fairness to you, this rarely happens." It was very bizarre. I prefer the short and sweet, or even not so sweet. Just rip off the band aid!

I got a similar rejection email. "Please think of us for future training and employment."

Ummm...I did think of you for future training! Was that not clear in the internship application??

Me too! And to think I spent so much time proofreading every essay and cover letter I wrote...
 
And they continue. Tough day today. 4 rejections (well 5 if you count both of the rejections UCSD/VA sent me), no invites, 6 left to hear from.

Most recent rejections: Pacific Clinics and San Bern. Cty Dept of Behavioral Health.

What a day. 👎

Your post made me chuckled the first time today. 3 rejections today and I thought late/no news meant good news...not so much.
 
yes... I am seeing no clear evidence of "no news is good news" or that rejections comes before interview invitations. Seems random at times...

While I haven't necessarily seen sites that indicate that Counseling is preferred while Clinical is not, there are many university counseling centers that have not taken any clinical interns in the last three years. So there may be a selection of sites that are biased in favor of Counseling students even if they don't state it explicitly. Although I guess that is only helpful if you were interested in counseling centers in the first place.

No rejections today. No acceptances either. Just... nothing!

I keep checking my email in between sessions with my clients. This is crazy-making! 😱 If only there was an icon of a smiley on a roller coaster...

I'm still waiting to hear back from UCSD, UW, and the Pacific Islands VA.

Best of luck, everyone. This system is seriously flawed (to put it nicely). There really needs to be more funding for sites so that they can offer more positions.

In regards to "safeties," I have to agree that there doesn't seem to be any... I applied to sites that other people in my program have been successful at. I was told (and I believe this) that I would only be competetive for certain sites because of my research focus and relatively low number of face-to-face hours. Every site is competitive for different reasons. The same is true for us as applicants.

On a happier note, I have a new puppy who keeps me occupied! She's an early Christmas present and she doesn't care at all if I receive rejections. 👍
 
I heard Pacific Island VA started looking through the applications 2 weeks ago and they have many applicants this year.

Sorry about the "RejectEmail"...seems like they could have at least called it something else....How are others in your program coping?
 
Hi Everyone-- After reading posts on this thread over the past few days, I just wanted to post info about something that just happened to me that will hopefully lift the spirits of those of you waiting to hear about interviews or coping with having received a lot of rejections:

I applied to 22 sites (mostly university counseling centers), and starting last week, the rejections started rolling in. It was a real blow to my ego to see one rejection after another (even from sites I thought of as "safety" sites), and I started wondering if there had been something seriously wrong with my application that I overlooked or if I just wasn't as strong of an applicant as I thought. By the weekend I had TWELVE REJECTIONS and ZERO INTERVIEWS. Talk about feeling crappy about myself! I spoke to my advisor about what other options there might be in case I don't match, etc.... so I was definitely starting down that road of worst-case scenario thinking.

This morning two more rejections came in-- and then I opened an email from Duke (which I had felt was a real long-shot)-- and saw that I was INVITED FOR AN INTERVIEW!!

My point in sharing this story is to tell you all not to get too discouraged if you get a lot of rejections-- and that I definitely believe now, as many others have written on this thread, that the process is all pretty arbitrary-- to be asked to interview at Duke and rejected from other much less competitive sites makes no sense to me-- so I guess it is true that these decisions are just about the specific needs of the site for next year and perhaps personal preferences, etc. of the specific people reviewing applications.

I have also heard that sites try to interview candidates that they think will rank them high in the process so you can actually be overqualified for "safety" sites.
 
Just an update: I got a rejection from SUNY upstate Medical today. I got an interview at Cornerstone (phone call)

I need some feedback about calling a site. When is it appropriate to call a site to see if you could schedule an interview (if they haven't responded).... I will be in Utah for an interview about 30 minutes from a site I have not heard from yet..... Should I call them? 😳

I personally found it hilarious because of the extent to which other sites have gone to sugar-coat their letters.

I think I have the mean number of interview offers for my cohort--two. A girl whose geographic range was literally double mine has three. Last year, less qualified applicants from our program had up to eight interview offers, so it is a bit disheartening.

We have been coping by making an effort to socialize after school/practicum hours. We used to do that often during the first two years, but allowed it to fall by the wayside with dissertations, marriages, etc. We also have plans to all show up in our department after match day to help peers who don't match go through clearinghouse. This is kind of a tradition in our program that even students from other cohorts regularly participate in.

I know that Greg Keilin responded to the Intern Network listserv to this same type of question. Look up the interview notification day for the site, and call the morning after if you haven't heard from them. Apparently, some training directors will wait till just about midnight to get in touch with you on their interview notification day. Congrats on your interview in Utah!

all advise i have received from faculty is that you do NOT call a site regarding your interview status until after their posted notification date which is either in their materials or on the APPIC directory. hope that helps.

The morning after their posted notification deadline is the advice that I have received...
