2010-2011 Internship Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I believe there is musc in sc and the wvu internship in charleston. I also heard you should email if you are interested in visiting rather than there being official interviews... CBTClinPsycher was your WVU interview for a different placement or did you ask for a visit and were granted one today?

I got it now 🙂 The MUSC one also goes by Charleston... That's the one that I am waiting to hear from 🙂

I probably missed this! Is it in their brochure? Was the letter an invitation?
I thought I read on here that several people had received invitations from MUSC. Are we talking about the same site?

No, sorry. Meant WVU-Charleston. I received an invite from MUSC last week. I received a letter in the mail from WVU-Charleston on Friday, but it was not an invite or rejection. If you look at their website, they explain that they don't "invite" people, as interviews are not necessary to be ranked. But if you are interested in visiting, you are supposed to contact the director.

Has anyone heard from:

West Virginia U (robert Byrd)
Miami Children's Hospital

i know some ppl have already heard from Rush, Baylor, and Henry Ford which i'm still waiting on.

THANKS!

Henry Ford began reviewing applications upon submission...so they started calling people in for interviews early and are going to also be interviewing people through January...so hold out hope until their notification tomorrow!

I applied to Charleston as well, but have not heard from them yet. I heard from someone that they are a bit slow in notifying people, so I hope we will both get some good news from them tomorrow!

Well, the charleston site is pretty competitive...They only interviewed 18 people last year and had 118 applicants. Their notification is not until JAN 15

WVU has 3 different tracks in different cities

I hear Starbucks has benefits and damn good coffee...Plan B!

Thnx! It must have been a different one. I was thinking whoa what I jerk I must look like emailing and asking if I can come visit!! But I double checked and that's what I was supposed to do for this one. Whew! 🙄

I think I have 15 rejections (I've stopped taking diligent notes)

I have 1 interview... I am really pleased as this site was a site I found prior to making it into the doctoral program. What's strange is that I had forgotten about the site (5 years later) and it literally was the last site I applied to, and I added it on for nostalgia, remembering earlier how I had been so excited about it.

Interview invite from Long Island Jewish (ZHH) adult track by email this evening. 🙂

Sorry, I was talking about the Charleston, South Carolina, site.

I'm still waiting to hear from VTCC. Is the Gildner Institute in Florida?

No, it's a site in Rockville, MD. 🙂 I'd rather it was in FL, for the sunshine and beach though!

I applied to both of those sites and haven't heard anything back from them either. Waiting....

Here's to hoping we are in the "YES!" pile, as opposed to the "Maybe..," or "Hell no!" ones.....

Rejections from Montefiore and UC Davis today. The UC Davis rejection came through snail mail. I almost didn't even notice it!

was this UC Davis Counciling center or the childrens hospital??

thanks!

15 rejections, 1 interview, and only 1 left that I haven't heard from...this is honestly so shocking--and scary! I know most of us have had a bunch of rejections but do you all think this is representative for most people out there?

I wonder what Clearinghouse is going to be like this year. Do you all think it's going to be any different than past years? I guess that will be more competitive too because I can already tell that really good and qualified people aren't going to match (present company included!)

By the way, I was told by a reputable source that 300 internship positions were cut this year--I think because of financial issues. Three hundred is a lot!

Good luck all. I agree with everyone else that has said how comforting this site has been in knowing I'm not alone in all of the rejections and in the degrading feelings. I doubt many of us are used to rejection, especially by so many people (sites)! I especially love the grammatical errors and misspelling the word, "internship"! I love it! 🙂

I'm in the same boat as you...one interview and it's a nonapa site and my last choice. So I'm trying to decide if I should risk it for clearinghouse or even try next year...but will I even do any better then? I mean who knows. It gets harder every year.
As far as clearinghouse, I feel like there will be some good sites in it due to the fact that it seems like a lot of the same people are getting the majority of interviews at certain types of sites...and all these people can only match at one site.
It's hard to know what to do. I really don't want to have a limbo year next year, but a non apa site might prevent me from getting to do the work I really want to do. Did I really pay 100,000 for education to have to make a choice like this?

Just a piece of information to consider, and you might already be: Don't use this forum as a gauge for where people are getting interviews. I have a feeling there is a very select population using this forum. I had not heard about it until yesterday when an announcement was made about it on the APPIC listserv. I've been a psyc grad student for 5.5 years. As for taking a non-APA internship.... That's a tough one. I would talk it over with your faculty and look at licencing criteria in some of the states you would want to eventually live in. You have until Feb 3 to decide whether to rank a site or not, which should give you some time to do the research you need to make an informed decision. Good luck.

I would also like to add that depending on your goals, an APPIC internship really won't hurt you. If you want to work for the federal govt. or a VA then you NEED an APA internship. There are also a handful of states that require and APA internship and you can go to asppb.org, to find out what the licensing requirements are for the states you are interested in. Now I am a person talking from a clinicians perspective, for those of you looking into research it may be different. If accepting an APPIC internship won't knock you out of the job market you are hoping for then I say a match is better than no match. Who the heck wants to voluntarily go through this again?

It's helpful to me. I like counseling centers. 😍

Oh I like counseling centers too. In fact, 90% of the places I applied to were counseling centers.

I agree- I didn't know about this until someone posted it up on the APPIC Intern Listserve the other day. Also, there are many applicants who just lurk and read the postings without contributing their results. I think there is a stat where you can see the number of times the threads were viewed and it is far different from the number of posts.

This forum can be helpful, such as it's a little nice to know if a site has begun notification. Some people might view things on here as more anxiety provoking. Goodness, did I just describe group therapy?

Hey all. I just wanted to say that knowing whether or not other people have heard from a particular site may or may not be helpful. For instance, I have read so far this morning that one of the sites from which I am still waiting to hear has already sent out both rejections and offers. Knowing that gives me absolutely no indication as to my status until I get a letter myself, and I cannot call to find out until the 16th. I know we're all just wanting to know SOMEthing, but sometimes this guessing game makes us more anxious than we need to be. For what it's worth.

Good luck to all of us! :luck:

I just appreciate knowing that others are suffering with me and I am not the only one who can't concentrate or be productive. Misery loves company!

University of Washington just sent out invites to their open house!

I got one, too (for the general adult track)! It was totally unexpected based on my previous rejections from similar sites. Interestingly, every site I applied to on the east coast and in the midwest has rejected me. 👎 If I do match, I guess I'm staying on the west coast. 🙂

Tomorrow is going to be a busy day on these boards.

Good luck, everyone. Thanks for everyone's support, as well. To be honest, I've gotten more support on these boards than from my own program!

On a happier note, I have a new puppy who keeps me occupied! She's an early Christmas present and she doesn't care at all if I receive rejections. 👍

Awww that is sooo sweet! That makes me smile 🙂 I wish I had a puppy to distract me. I told my boyfriend how yours is helping you and said I should have one...he just laughed.

I think APPIC should advertise as a remedy for confidence..."Are you confident in your abilities? Do you like yourself? We can take care of that! Join the APPIC Match process. Slaughtering self-esteem since 1968!"

Hahahahaha omg you are hilarious - and it's so true!

But just think what people next year will go through if they don't find a way to cap/control this: they'll hear about the ppl who applied to like 20 and only got a few interviews and apply to 35, and then sites will have even more apps to sift through and more people will get rejected who would have been a good fit, and the yr after, in panic, people will apply to 45! So...maybe we're getting out of this easy? lol

I'm really trying to spin this as a positive... lol 🙂

Given that today is a popular notification date HAPPY TUESDAY AND GOOD LUCK!!!

i know i'm waiting on 5 fingers crossed that even just 1 will be an interview!!

GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!!

I just want to wish everyone good luck today. I hope most of the sites we're waiting on respond with good news :xf:
