I am up at 7am on my day off b/c of this anxiety! And I had a dream that my boyfriend chose some other woman over me. After being mad at him (b/c we all know men are responsible for what they do in our dreams), I got to wondering why I would dream that. Then I realized, this process has completely undercut my self esteem and now I'm paranoid about people (sites) choosing other people (applicants) over me. I can't even dream in peace!

Try to keep in mind that they are choosing some Applications over your Application--it is only numbers and letters they are seeing, not You.

Don't worry, you are not paranoid.

I'm suprisingly calm today, must be the insanity kicking in.

I am wondering if those of you that have interviews at the VA sites, have VA experience or publishing under your belt?

What I would have to do to be a good "match" candidate for the VA. I have over 7 years direct client work experience with all populations, I am writing my dissertation on PTSD, I have worked with PTSD clients for years and I am really wondering how I could have received a rejection from every single VA site. I have very low face-face hours (practicum), however, my DCT kept encouraging me to apply.

Does anyone know some of the criteria that makes you a good match for the VA? Is it required that you must have the 500 face-face hours? I'm just trying to figure out a stratergy if the Starbucks thing falls through.

I did a practicum at a WONDERFUL VA and yes, face to face hours are important as are the number of assessments. If you are really interested in a VA, but have not done a clinical practicum at one I would suggest increasing your face-to-face hours and assessments. I don't know how much detail is appropraite, but I was WOWed by the numbers the interns had there while I was on practicum. Hope that helps.

I believe the volume of applications at most VAs mean they would be likely to do an initial screen out based on numbers of hours in certain categories--so your lower number may well have been a factor. Your school should do some research on this if they are encouraging students to apply to VAs

One intern had been seeing patients since her first year and so had over 1000 face-to-face hours and a LOT of assessments (I think it was definitely over 50 but memory wants to say closer to 100).

I did a practicum at a WONDERFUL VA and yes, face to face hours are important as are the number of assessments. If you are really interested in a VA, but have not done a clinical practicum at one I would suggest increasing your face-to-face hours and assessments. This is good to know. It confirms my logic all along. It's terrible that after all that hard work your friend still received VA rejections.

I wish I would have known that counseling centers were so stringent on counseling center experience, I would not have applied to the ones that I did. However, I'll be sure to 'warn' those who follow me in my program.

I had over 2100 practicum hours at application - 800 face to face assessment 400 face to face intervention almost around 350 supervision. I have had three neuropsychology prac's. My research experience is within neuro - my final defense of my dissertation is complete. I've had at least 5 people read my essays - all of which had great feedback about everything, no major errors or ommissions. I had over 60 reports written. I had experience with children, adults, and geriatrics. My therapy experience was working with severely psychiatrically ill as well as with school-aged children. I have two phenomenal letters of recommendation and one very good letter of recommendation.

My weaknesses: My assessment experience is in neuro, not projectives or personality assessment (although some personality assessment was conducted with neuro assessments). I have no publications, but three poster presentations at national conferences. My last experience with therapy was in 2006-2007, and was mostly with acute psychiatric illness. Probably most importantly, I attend a Professional School (although I am in a Ph.D. program - not psyd).

Is research THAT crucial to get into these Neuro track programs? I have 3 interviews and 16 rejections. What else can I do to bolster my application? I don't get it - am I not getting consideration because of my professional school education? I better match this year, I can't go through what I did last year.

It sounds really frustrating! I'm not in neuropsych but there are quite a few neuropsych students in my program and they usually match well. Research has never been a huge issue actually...most of them do quite a few posters, but having pubs for them seems rare for some reason. I remember a few years back a student didn't match and we figured it was because her interest in neuropsych was almost too generalist and she didn't focus on one main thing (e.g., geriatrics, TBI, rehab). Although obviously you don't want to just pick one thing and not be flexible it was almost like she spread herself too thin with everything and sites were confused what she actually wanted to do. I can't speak to the fact that you're coming from a professional school, but am guessing maybe it impacts some site's decisions. However, what has match rate been like for former students at your school in neuropsych? If they've had good luck, then I'd feel more confident applying to those programs myself... I don't think there's a clear cut answer for this though, but I will keep my fingers crossed for you 🙂

Based on the numbers and how similar my sites were this process is quite arbitrary and actually makes minimal sense. In the past people in my program have receieved 7-10 interviews. Those of us applying to mostly VAs are not doing well. The rest are doing quite well (i.e., child or counseling centers). I wish I had applied to fewer VAs, but oh well. At this point I will take my interviews and try to be positive. To all of you out there remember this is quite random in that each site may or may not reject you for some small experinece or lack thereof.

Hey Johnson42 -- Hang in there. What I've learned from this forum is that a lot of this application process (at least pre-interview) seems to be pretty arbitrary. Your numbers seem excellent. I couldn't begin to imagine why you haven't gotten more than 3 interviews. However, you do have 3, which is more than a lot of people. Last year, people who had a lot more didn't necessarily match, and people who less than what you have now did -- again, more ways in which this process is totally arbitrary. I'm hearing your frustration. Again, just hang in there, and rock the interviews that you do have. Congrats on those, and best of luck!

For everyone getting mostly rejections and feeling discouraged: Don't lose hope until all is said and done...I only had one interview at a site I wasn't crazy about and was getting all rejections from children's hospitals I really wanted, then this morning I got an interview at umiami/jackson memorial. I was shocked. So you never know which site might appreciate something about your application that other sites didn't. I only have 2 interviews and don't expect to get more, but am still happy because it really could've been worse.

Current status: Two interviews (Hutchings in Syracuse and Wichita State University as part of WCPIP), nine sites at which I am no longer being considered, and three sites from which I have received no news as of yet.

I just wanted to share: As the e-mails come in, I am texting my parents (who are probably more anxious about this process than I am) to keep them posted. I sent two this morning: "Rejected by Albany" and "Rejected by University of Pennsylvania." My father responded: "I would say passed up not rejected; their loss." Yay to my dad for maintaining positivity and bolstering my self-esteem in his own little way. 😍

Places I didn't think I'd get an interview made offers and places that I felt I was spot on in terms of fit did not offer me interviews. I was starting to worry because so many had heard from UNC already and I didn't hear anything. Some places make calls as they review over time while others sit down in a big meeting and comb through all applications. Different processes, different personalities, and different times (compared to the last few years).


I just heard from CHOP, CHOC, and UNC...waiting on OHSU and The Help Group.

I was invited to one of their open houses (which they do instead of interviews). However, I don't think yesterday was their first round of invites as one of their open house days was already full, so they may be doing yet another round of invites today...

Because you are all so awesome at giving support, I am going to post non-internship news on here. I found out this morning, right after reading my UMiami rejection email, that my horse (ex-horse? he now works with handicapped kids) has Cushing's Disease which is caused by a tumor in the pituitary gland. With treatment they can live comfortably for years, but it is sure to shorten his life span and with it my hope of one day taking him back and reuniting him with the sister I was forced to separate him from 🙁

In short: today blows, and it's only 9:30am on the left coast! Here's hoping SOME good news comes my way...

From what I know, MOST people match through the clearinghouse the first day, a few more the second day, and then it drops DRAMATICALLY after that. So, you can take off two days just to be safe.

I hope you don't have to go through the clearinghouse but if you do remember that it is a mad rush. From what people at my program tell me, basically you send your info out to as many programs as possible and if someone calls you with an offer, the only thing that should come out of your mouth is YES!! Because if you say let me think about it, they basically call the next person on the list and offer it to them.
