What do people think about rescheduling interview dates with sites?

I already agreed to some dates but it would be easier if I could swap one or two of them. Can I email a place to change the interview date after I already set it?

I did that last year. Some may think it's a bad idea to switch but I say give 'em a call. The worst thing they can say is "no." They have been through the process before as students as well so surely than can empathize with the need to coordinate in order to preserve sanity. If they can't work with you just keep that in mind later on.

I would agree with IsItOver. I called her twice and in the second message I just said something like "I apologize for calling twice in a short period of time but I remain extremely interested in your site. I am hoping you can respond with my interview status" etc. etc. Go ahead and call again. I was one of the people who heard from her at 7:30 pm so it is definitely possible that she will call you late today. I'm crossing my fingers for you!!!

Thanks so much to you and isitover. I went ahead and called again and left a voicemail. I appreciate the advice!

Hi, has anyone heard from Metropolitan State College of Denver? Their notification date was 12/15 and I still have not heard anything. I have emailed the TD once and called twice but have not received a response.

I agree with Manko7. As long as they still have openings on the other date I don't know why they'd care if you switch.

Hi RandomPerson... I had to switch my dates with 4 different sites and they were all very nice about it! I was a little nervous about asking but none of the DCT's seemed to mind at all.

I'm so glad someone posted that question and people have responded. I just may switch one of my NY interviews so I only have to travel that far once. 🙂

Thanks!

I asked to reschedule and they were perfectly fine with it!

Also.... I received a rejection from a site tonight at 10:30 PM.

I guess they work around the clock, so you never know when to expect your response!

Sorry you got bad news 🙁 You didn't want them anyway, right?! 😉 Do you mind if I ask where from? Just being nosy.

Question: On the APPIC directory, are the "current activities of past interns" updated yearly, or are they a reflection of the immediate post-internship year (i.e., would the current 2007-2008 activities listing be reflective of what those individuals are doing NOW or what they were doing in 2008-2009?)?

Thanks!

I don't see "current activities" but do see "Summary of Post-Internship Employment Settings of Each Internship Class" and assume that is what you are referring to? If so, I am going to context-clue my answer. First, since the title is "Summary of Post-Internship Employment Settings of Each Internship Class" I believe it is where the interns sought employment following internship; meaning, as soon as internship ended as opposed to later years. Since it does not say "current activities" I believe it is ONLY referring to post-internship employments, not current employment. Following this same vein of thought, the years refer to the "Internship Class," i.e. the year the interns were at that placement. So, what you see under each year would be where the interns from that year ended up after their internship was over.

I can't be positive, but feel pretty confident in my rationalization 🙂

That's the right way to view it. Where were they the year following pre-doc internship. Those numbers are entered once and I don't think can be changed. It is a great question to ask on interview however: Where are your interns from 5 years ago now?

That is a great question to ask, though the answers may be a bit scattered. Some sites stay in touch with their past interns better than others. I wanted to see a solid history of placing interns, as post-doc can be really important to people who want to work in speciality areas (neuro, health, etc).

Yeah, that's it--I couldn't remember the exact title of the section. Thanks!

De nada 🙂

Has anyone gotten any news this morning? I haven't... wish Manhattan would let me know either way and Hudson would schedule my interview!!

Hi everyone! I wish I found this forum just a teeny bit earlier 😉 Congratulations to all that have interviews thus far, and hang in there for those who have not. As my cohort keeps saying "you only need one." I saw a post earlier about The Children's Assessment Center. Has anyone heard from them. I have not since I sent my application, though I have emailed multiple times. I never called, since so many other sites responded so well to email. But I did notice that their APPIC page says you will be notified "sometime in December" If anyone has heard from them pleas let me know. Thanks!:xf:

Just heard from Hudson! Sent my interview for the 13th. Anyone else set their date yet?

Believe it or not, I'm still waiting to hear. I have left two voicemails and sent an email. I've been trying not to assume its bad news, but I'm not sure what else to think at this point....

That is very strange. I see that the last few years they interviewed a LOT of people (like 70-something), so it could still be coming! 🙂 :xf:

I called again today and she called back, I got an interview!!! She thought she had already emailed me. Woohooo! 🙂

Did someone call or email you to set the interview? She mentioned on the voicemail that it wouldn't be her doing it. She gave me the number for the other director, but I was unclear whether we were supposed to call or email them, or wait? For those of you who scheduled your interviews at Rockland, what did you do?

Thanks for the support, I am really excited!

I called Dr. T at Rockland last week and she called me back this morning to schedule the interview. I called her back about an hr and a half later to try to reschedule (trying to save money). She did change it, but sounded really annoyed with me. To make matters worse, I was originally just asking if it was POSSIBLE to change, b/c I hadn't heard back from the other site I was trying to coordinate with, but ended up actually changing it because she sounded so annoyed and I just wanted to get it over with. And, of course, the other site called right after and said it doesn't look like they can move my interview. If I stick with the new date with Hudson it will cost me even more than it was going to initially, but I am (irrationally) afraid if I call back to change it again she will just tell me not to come! :bang:

I'm sorry you went through that! My guess is she was overworked trying to get everything done before the holidays and that she won't hold something as innocent as changing an interview date against you.
On the other hand, not sure what to tell you about sticking with the new date or not. I'm sure she wouldn't tell you not to come anymore, though. But, like you, I worry about whether it would leave her with a bad feeling about me and hurt my chances there. It really shouldn't, but if it was me, I would probably also be scared to change again. Sorry that happened!

Hey LuvPsyd, I have heard from them. I think they have notified most folks of their interview status so perhaps give them another try? Best of luck.

Note the extended deadline dates. Also, a very good NYC internship site adding THREE spots and is still accepting applications.

Hi everyone

I saw on a much earlier page of this forum that someone has an interview at the hudson valley va. I applied there as well and the deadline was 12/15, with a listed notification deadline of 12/31. Has anyone else gotten word from them?

Well, I haven't heard back yet for interview scheduling... in Dr.N's message, she did mention that Dr.Tosado would be contacting me to schedule, but I have not heard back yet.. Just parused the site to see if I could find Dr.T's number to schedule, but not seeing it. In mid-dial-finger mode, lol, but don't want to "bug" Dr.N... must schedule, losing mind...

Same here! I have Dr. Tosado's number if you want it. I left a message yesterday but haven't heard anything.

Also, I heard from Manhattan Psychiatric today, by phone. I got an interview, yay! They were pretty flexible with scheduling and have two open houses, Jan. 5 and 19.

psychdive, welcome to the forum! It may be helpful if you provide the city/state where the placement is located, as the name sounds similiar to some other sites out there.

Thank you! Sorry, that would help. It is The Children's Assessment Center in Houston, TX. I still have not heard back from that site...I think I will email them

Congrats! I am still waiting for Manhattan. I sent them a friendly e-mail asking about their interview dates (explaining I would lie to tentatively include them in my plans in hopes of an interview offer). No response. Fingers crossed!

Dr. T e-mailed me my confirmation today, so she must just be making her way down the list. Last year the Hudson program interviewed over 70 people, so I guess that would take some time. I am now interviewing on the 5th, spending the night of the 4th in the NYC area. If there are any females who would like to share a room on the 4th, let me know!! I am also unsure what I will be doing about transportation, so there's a possibility of sharing that with others as well (any gender).

Yay interviews! :soexcited:

Rejection from Manhattan. That's it for me! Got two interviews total, but it only takes 1, right? 🙂

BTW, I am so glad you told us the interview invite was by phone because the rejection e-mail was titled "Internship Applicant Interview." I def would have been expecting good news from that if I didn't know they were calling!

Has anyone heard from UMDNJ-Piscataway (Child Track)? Or Mount Sinai Adolescent?

My friend got a phone call for an interview yesterday for Piscataway but I think it was for the adult track so that isn't necessarily bad news for you!

I got one similar! It was titled "interview letter," except it was the opposite, lol. Sorry about Manhattan Psych. You are right, you can only go to one place, so just concentrate on the interviews you have and you'll do great! I haven't been able to schedule my Rockland interview, but when I hear I'll let you know. Maybe we will be there at the same time!

Happy holidays everyone!

...no matter the outcome of our interview statuses...I hope that we can all take time out to reflect and be grateful for what we do have...Here's to wishing everyone the ability to enjoy the holiday...

Hello, friends...
I have heard nothing from 3 of the sites I applied to. I thought it was frowned upon to contact them in any way -- Am I wrong? Should I email them and ask if they received my applications?

Thanks so much.😳

If the notification deadlines have passed, I would contact the sites. Its hard to plan if you know nothing at all.

Work Ethic is right. You definitely can, and probably should contact the sites if the notification date has passed. Especially if it was back on the 15th or earlier. I gave my sites two days after the deadline before contacting them, because I was nervous 🙂 They may have e-mailed you and you may just not have gotten it, etc. You can find the notification dates in the APPIC directory and often in their brochures.

Good luck!

I don't understand why sites have vacancies after hosting interviews. Obviously they pour over apps and selected the best of those apps for interviews, so how does a site still have an opening after all that work? If they didn't like the best of the best what are they hoping to find with candidates that come into the Clearing House? (no offense to anyone that will use Clearing House) Isn't the assumption that they had selected the best match and interviewed candidates. Enlighten me please.

the "process" is explained on the match's website http://www.natmatch.com/psychint/

Basically, a site could rank their applicants 1-30 but say their applicants don't rank them or rank them very low ontheir list then there is a spot that is not filled once the match is complete ... that is the spot that is filled in the clearinghouse. So it is a good idea to reapply to a site that you didn't get an interview because you may get a spot in the clearinghouse. Some people say they got a better site in the clearinghouse than any they applied to or interviewed at but didn't match with. , again, as someone else said IT IS A FLAWED and sometimes NOT UNDERSTANDABLE process. 😎

I know the Boston Consortium had a spot go to Clearing House 2 years ago (or they may have gotten some late funding for an additional spot?) either way, quality site that landed in CH....so there are good sites to be had.

Speaking of CH....here is a message that went out on 12/23 that I thought was interesting:

The APPIC Board would like input from students who used the APPIC Clearinghouse last year regarding a proposed change to the Clearinghouse procedures for 2010. Please note that this is only a proposal; no decision has been made as to whether or not to implement this proposal.

Specifically, we propose to implement the following policy change:

Proposal: The Clearinghouse will open for exchange of information On Match Day, at 11 am Eastern Standard Time. However, all offers for internship positions will be postponed until one week after Match Day, on Monday, March 1, 2010 at 11:00 am Eastern Standard Time. A complaint process will be in effect for offers made before this date, and violators will be prohibited from using the Clearinghouse the following year.

The APPIC Board is proposing this change based on numerous complaints and concerns by students, internships, and doctoral programs. The purpose of this delay is to allow both programs and students time to put forth and collect information in a more considered fashion. We plan to propose further changes in the process gradually over time.

We would appreciate your feedback about this effort to slow down the process and give all involved time to think and plan ahead, as well as reduce the perceived chaos often associated with the Clearinghouse process.
