I currently only have three interviews and about nine rejections. When is it appropriate to start panicking?
@concernedms4
Thanks for bringing up the inaccuracy of the DIGA Interviews Calendar.
The DIGA Interview Calendar does NOT reflect the current year. The interview dates are those associated with the 2009-2010 academic year. We are currently in the process of making the transition over to the new academic year. We are still waiting to hear back from a few programs regarding their interview dates (even before ANY invites are sent out). You can imagine that some programs are hesitant to share such info. Either way, we will be putting out there what we have to this point very soon. I will be sure to post a link here when that change has been made.
Don't panic. I would guess 80% of interviews are held by 20% of applicants at this stage of the application process. Of course, I just made these figures up but the point is there are several applicants sitting on 15-20 interviews already. It is just a matter of time before these select few start cancelling and sharing the wealth. Try to stay positive. If you really really love derm you will match..whether it is this year, next year, or a few years from now it will happen!
For the most part, does no invite = rejection for places that have already sent out invites?
It looks like the much anticipated Thanksgiving week has come and gone. Seems to have been pretty anticlimactic. All I got was one more rejection....
Well, I would guess that SDN catches pretty much all the invites offered by programs. If you count, the post is at 53...that's not even half of the programs.
There are still many offers to come. Everyone keep your chins up. I'm currently on a waitlist for an alt date for a conflict. If I don't get the alt date, I'll have to give up one of the conflicting spots...so what broadbasedbud alluded to will happen in general. It's the nature of Dermatology since we have so few dates/program all packed into basically two months.
I agree with this completely. At this point in time last year I had 3 interviews total, and ended up with 9.
In addition, if you have a legit reason to touch base with a program of particular interest (new publication/presentation//honor/award, new AOA status, etc) I wouldn't hesitate to send an email or even make a quick phone call to the program coordinator as an opportunity to update them and reiterate your interest.
This technique got me another interview invite last year.
As a note, this is not a suggestion to start cold calling programs for no reason, as that technique always has the opportunity to backfire.
No wonder Dermeriffic gets so many interviews.... he can see the future!
