Talk about worrying...I only applied to one. When I saw that people were applying to 10, 15...I think even 23 schools I freaked out for a minute, but then remembered everyone's situation, requirements, needs are different. Now if there's a NEXT year I might do things differently lol!
 
One program! wow, I would be stressed. I hope you got an interview :luck:

I applied to many schools because I know it is highly competitive.

I have been freaking out feeling that 9 schools isn't enough!! I admire the people who applied to 20+ I would not have the energy!
 
I'm curious if anyone has gotten invites from any of the schools I applied to. As of now, I haven't heard anything at all. 🙁 I'm waiting on Duquesne, CUNY, MSPP, Antioch Uni. New England, Antioch Seattle, Fielding, U. La Verne, and Wright. I'd also love to hear (if ppl have time) what other schools they applied to along with any of these through PM.

I haven't heard anything from them personally (I applied to OSU but not UNL), but they're both on the list on the first page. OSU's interview is this Friday, so I can only assume all of their invites have gone out.

Also, it looks like everyone here applied to more than 10 schools--should I be worried that I only applied to 4? Do you seriously want to go to all 10 programs? I'm not trying to be rude; I was just wondering. 🙂

You don't necessarily need to be worried about only applying to 4 programs, but given acceptance rates and the possibility of things coming up unexpectedly throughout the application process (mishaps with application materials, potential supervisors losing funding or deciding not to take a student the following year, etc.), it's advisable to apply to more if you have the means and can find programs that are a good fit for your interests. That said, it only takes one, so don't get discouraged. 🙂

I'm applying to 14 programs this year, and while there are certainly programs I would prefer to attend, I'd be happy to go to any of them if accepted.

I'm married with children and didn't want to relocate so there was really only one school in my state that I was in love with. I decided that if I were going to do this I needed to be in love with the faculty's research. I did get an interview so...we'll see!

Hey - I got a call from my POI today at Binghamton inviting me to interview - dates are Feb 18 or Feb 21 and you have a choice between the two.

Yes you're right. (And for the record, I wasn't calling up a faculty member multiple times; it was a graduate dept secretary/coordinator). I did what you said and emailed the department and got a reply right away. 🙂

I just get paranoid each time I get an interview invite that I've imagined it or that they made a mistake. I got nervous when I didn't have the confirmation, but now I do 🙂

I was told by my research professor that I wasn't accepted into the clinical psych grad program here because they don't like to take undergrads from here... great to know that i got cut just cause i happened to go to school here already XD

It's also important to remember that schools like Harvard, Yale, and UIUC (and I'm not sure which others), don't do a normal interview weekend. They may hold phone interviews, and then they will make their actual offers (no waiting list either if their offers don't get accepted), and *then* they will have a 'visiting weekend' (potentially) for admitted applicants. This is partially why you won't always hear about schools like this on SDN etc, because you're talking about a handful of applicants who are being made offers or getting phone interviews. [As far as I know, individual faculty decide who they want, but then the group has to approve (they have a set number of offers they make as a program, which is why there's no waitlist normally)].
 
just got an email for an interview date on 2/11 (same as penn state, ****) from CUNY neuropsych program😱😀

Its not uncommon that schools prefer to take students from outside to gain more diversity.

Got my first rejection letter before any invites. Really tough on me. Loyola Chicago, so letters are on their way out either way. Trying not to lose faith, still have 6 schools to hear from.

People generally apply to lots of programs because it is a competitive process. The number you decide to apply to depends upon a number of factors (whether you are willing to move, the competitiveness of your application, etc.). The odds of getting in obviously vary depending on how competitive your application is. But, if you want to know the odds just based on probability alone, you can calculate it using the following formula where Q is the proportion of applicants rejected at a school:

Ca = (1 &#8722; (1 &#8722; Q1)(1 &#8722; Q2)(1 &#8722; Q3)...(1 &#8722; Qn)) × 100

So for example, let's say you applied to 10 schools that all accept 5% of applicants (just as an example, this will vary). The odds of acceptance (while ignoring other factors) would be 1 - (.95^10) = 40%. Thus, you can see why many people apply to lots of programs.

Sorry to hear this! 6 more is way too many to give up hope yet.

This post and the ones on gradcafe literally sent me running to my mailbox. I think I am getting a little too obsessive.

I thought that the formula to calculate odds is (p/(1-p)), with p being the probability in favor of an event...? In other words, odds is (chances for/chances against) and probability is (chances for/chances total)...

Also, wouldn't the probabilities of being accepted into individual programs be independent of each other?

Regardless, I applied to 19 programs. Just wondering about this math. 🙂

I would think if you have a 5% hypothetical chance of acceptance at any one school and apply to 19 schools your chances of not getting in anywhere would be...

(.95)^1 = 95% for one school.
(.95)^2 = 90.25% for two schools.
(.95)^19 = 37.74 for nineteen schools.

Of course, without taking into account other factors (GPA, GRE, Subject GRE, Personal Statement, etc.), which indubitably are extremely important moderators of the outcome at most programs in varying combinations and thresholds...

I got that same letter from Loyola Chicago today too... I feel your pain. Don't worry though, 6 schools left is a lot of chances 🙂
 
Does anyone have any idea whether LIU is done extending invites? I submitted my application pretty close to the deadline and was trying to remain optimistic, but it's getting harder...

Last year they sent out invites over a 15 day period, which stretched across three separate business weeks. Assuming they follow a similar schedule, and accounting for the numerous snow days in the last few weeks here in NY, I would say it is possible they have not finished yet. At least I hope so... 😱

I'm hoping the same; although I'm starting to lose hope. I had my application in for when the deadline was Dec 1...its my top choice school!

Someone was called on the 21st according to today's update, so I wouldn't lose hope yet. Even after initial invites go out there is still a chance that people chose other programs and have left spaces open that need to be filled.

I can't decide if this site is keeping me sane, or making me crazy. I check it about a million times a day even though I know that it isn't updated until later in the evening, but if I'm out of the running at a school, I would like to know instead of just waiting and waiting and waiting... I just thought that we could ponder the madness of it all 😀

Does anyone know on average how many people actually physically GO to the university for the interviews (when there is about a 30 people pool)?

I feel like it is so hard sometimes for the out of state students and it makes me wonder if they weigh more on your application if you actually DO go to the interview.

Any information would be helpful 🙂!

I can only speak from personal experience--with respect to my own interview experiences a few years back, and those related to seeing things from "the other side" as a graduate student. At our program, and at those at which I interviewed, it seemed/seems as though the vast majority of individuals who are invited definitely do attend in-person interviews. If I had to put an actual value on attendance rate, it'd be somewhere around 90%. And yes, I would say that not attending an interview would, in general, decrease your chances of being ranked highly by the program (unless there were significant extenuating circumstances).

With the competitiveness of applicant pools nowadays, POIs and program directors need to look at every available piece of data when deciding to whom they'll extend acceptances. They know that the process is stressful and expensive, but they also know that if you REALLY want to attend a program, you'll find a way to make it there for the interview.

I don't believe Drexel is done sending invites - I received an email from a poi 1/24 saying the faculty was not done reviewing it's applications, but hopefully by the end of the week......

that being said, anyone with Drexel invites, please pm me your poi! thanks!
 
FYI--I e-mailed Dr. Rosenfeld (the program director) at Fordham, who told me that they have already extended all interview invites, and that I was not on the list. So--chances are that if you were not already invited, might want to work on the rest of your schools. Fortunately I have 9 others, and Fordham was at the bottom of my list. Good luck!

Tell me about it! I just checked my e-mail first thing this morning, and found that I had received an invite to interview via phone with my POI at Texas Tech, time stamped from 1:00 in the morning! I was bordering on obsessive-compulsive before that, but had at least managed to tone things down after 8:00pm or so...now I have justification for hitting "refresh" pretty much around the clock...

(Thrilled as can be to get the invite, of course...so I'll take the spike in psychopathology that comes along with it 😉).

I don't know if it would qualify as psychopathology; it likely isn't causing you significant distress. Perhaps if it is lighting up the mesolimbic pathways it could qualify as a future category of addiction NOS (along with other symptoms). 😉

I know the feeling though. The same thing happened to me when I received an invite the other day!

I was told they might be. 🙁 Someone got an invite, and apparently their travel information had to be confirmed by this last weekend. But maybe they're staggering them? I hope! O_O
 
I've been offered an interview at a school that does multiple interview dates and we're able to choose which one (out of three possible) we would prefer to go to. Do you think it would matter at all which one I chose to attend?
 
Has anyone heard from University of Southern Fla, Cincinnati, or U. of Memphis?
 
Does anyone feel as though the weekend of February 11th and 12th is the magic day? Seems like a lot of schools are all choosing that day...
