2010-2011 PhD/PsyD Interview Invite thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I actually live in NYC and I just bought a pair of rain boots because my snow boots have been pretty useless over the past few weeks. There are literally pond-sized puddles in the middle of the streets and my feet are soaked if I wear snow boots (because they are fabric based and not water proof). A nice pair of rain boots with thick socks or liners will definitely be all you'll need.

As for the umbrella, I totally used one during the last snow storm. The snow was falling so hard and at such an angle, that it was flying directly into my eyes. Without the umbrella to block the wind/snow mixture from my face, I would not have been able to see. For just light snow storms, though, I would not suggest using an umbrella... 🙂

I second this. I live in NYC as well, and would have died of hypothermia if not for my fleece-lined Hunters.

This 24hr. blizzard warning in Chicago and up coming snow in Boston is going to make travel for INS a joy!👍

Yep... my flight is supposed to leave Thursday morning for an interview. Was going to drive up to Chicago (two hours away from my home) the night before and stay in a hotel... yeah that does not look like its going to happen. I hope I don't miss my interview!:xf:

Thank you for all the snow advice. 😀 I never thought New Orleans floods would come in handy, but at least now I am well equipped in the footwear department.

I'm not qualified for any of these research assistant jobs on the website posted (higheredjobs.com)! They want years of experience, or experience running an MRI machine, or a Master's. Where have you all gotten your research experience?

Hey, can you PM me your POI for the University of Rhode Island? I'd really appreciate it! Congrats on all the interview!

I just received an invite to the VA Consortium's PsyD program, as well as to the University of Rhode Island's PhD program. So I'm up to 3 invites and 1 waitlist. I may have a chance yet!

Also, I called GW (PhD) and the lady I spoke to said they should be sending out interview invites via email within the next few days, if not today.

I called Baylor (PsyD) and they should be sending out rejections and interview invites within the next 2 weeks. Interviews will be on either 2/25, 2/26, and 2/28.

I've seen a few people mentioning that they emailed their POI to find out if their status. Should this only be done with POIs you've had a good amount of communication with? Most of mine were none or only a response to asking if they were taking students.

Also, is it okay to call and ask directly with your name? I called two places and was told that if I would be invited, I would be invited soon. I wasn't... but I'd like to know if that is a rejection or if there is a waitlist at all.

Can anyone who got an invite at UF please pm me with details too (was the email for all tracks, etc.)? Thanks and congrats!

So University of Florida (clinical) is now up on gradcafe. The person there noted that it was a mass email, so it looks like it's all over for that one. I'm so bummed! If anyone on here got an invite to University of Florida, would you please send me a PM with the details, just to confirm that what's on the other site is true?

I think the wise thing to do once you've had the interview, you should leave it alone and wait. If you have not had the interview yet, then be sure to have at least a week between making contact. No one should be contacting programs/professors/admissions people of interest every couple of days. Just relax, if it's for you then it's for you. I allowed for space and they told me when they would be contacting me and they actually did.

ok so I had an interview ad I'm just going to send brief thank you emails to those who interviewed me. I think it went well, would it be inappropriate to tell them they are my first choice since it's honest and I would cancel all my other interviews if they gave me an offer? Or should I just tell them that I was really impressed with the program? Or would saying any of that sound desperate or something and it would be best to just say a simple thank you?

Yay! Made it past the phone interview! Going to have my campus Interview for U of Kansas sometime in March, exact days pending.

Does anyone know if GWU, Denver, and Widener are still extending interview invites for their Psy.D programs?
I called them today after seeing that someone else had posted that they were done extending invites. The person that I spoke with said that they are not done reviewing applications and, therefore, aren't done extending invites!

Are you talking about Denver's Clinical Psy.D program? I called them after I saw your post because I got really nervous- they said that they haven't finished reviewing applications yet and AREN'T done extending invites. Did you call them, too?

Thanks for all your suggestions on how to delete spaces in 1st post. I think when I copy and paste it adds space, so I went through and changed it directly in the post itself instead of copying and pasting from word.

** If anyone sent me an update in the past 3 days that is not reflected in the newly updated post, please send it again**

Thanks for your patience and congrats to recent invitees:luck:

In my opinion, it would be OK to say that they are your top choice & wwere impressed with their program, but I wouldn't say the part about cancelling all your other interviews. That second part does sound a little off for a thank you note. I read that the thank you note should NOT try to bolster yourself as an applicant, rather thank them and let them know what you took away from the interview. Good luck 👍

Would the person who heard from the civilian program at USUHS please PM me? Thanks, and congrats to all who received interview invites today!

Haha ok thanks, I actually wasn't planning to include the part about not going to my other interviews I was just saying that here on the forum since it was the thought I was having and I was half talking to myself. i agree that would sound weird. 🙂

I'm pretty sure that when I called the GWU Psy.D. program, they told me they'd be extending interviews through Jan. 31st. The person I spoke to was really nice - I bet they would be happy to give you accurate information if you gave them a call. Best of luck to you!

Hi-
Today I was a little nosey and decided to ask schools when they'll be sending out invites.
Rosalind Franklin said within 10 days
UMKC said late this week or early next week
Denver Clinical Health said within 2 weeks
I called Nova but they weren't very helpful. They said sometime in February.

Hi everyone,

I was just wondering if anyone has found it at all helpful to have their laptops with them at interviews. I couldn't think of a reason I would need to have it with me on-site but wanted to see what others have found useful.

Thanks!

Just got a rejection email from Michigan State University.
Also heard from University of Denver.. they are done sending out interview invitations.
Anyone else invited to SUNY Binghamton? I have a feeling it's going to be VERY cold & snowing, & I've only seen snow falling twice! I don't even know how to prepare!
I already posted a response to this, but I forgot to quote you 🙂 Where did you hear that University of Denver was done extending interview invites? I saw your post and called them late yesterday afternoon- they said they're not done reviewing apps! Were you talking about the Clinical Psy.D program?

I could definitely see why you'd want to bring it along for the trip, but I've never seen an applicant bring a laptop to the actual interview day itself. Heck, there are people who would argue that you shouldn't open up an old-fashioned notepad and take notes during interviews, so I can only imagine how poorly it would go over if you were typing away on a laptop.

In all honesty, you probably wouldn't have time to get much use out of it. At least in our program, they'll try to shuffle you through your 4-6 interviews quickly and then take you on a campus tour ASAP so that you can eat lunch at a humane hour.

Based on the 2 interviews that I've been on so far I wouldn't see any need for it. They give you a good amount of info about the program, but no more than a page of notes, which I usually just write on the back of the agenda or something in the packet the school gives you. Also, usually they do campus tours and then you would have to lug around your laptop the entire day.

I definitely brought mine to the hotels with me though because other wise I would have been super bored.

voyeurofthemind, Pepperdine's Clinical PsyD just popped up on gradcafe, FYI.

Just thought I would throw it out there one more time. Anyone hear from Pepperdine? Interviews are apparently scheduled individually through February, it is about that time...

I contacted the Washington State University (Pullman) Psych Dept. and they said that the faculty are still meeting to select interview candidates. Yet, people on this site and grad cafe report receiving invites weeks ago.

Would someone who has received an invite please post or PM me to confirm that an invitation was made for the Clinical Program?

Thanks and congratulations!

Georgia State clinical PhD invite through mass email :soexcited:

I called the program and received an email about the Clinical PhD program. They are currently making decisions about applicants at the moment.

Hey all,

There has been some talk about the fact that UIllinois (Chicago) is still reviewing and won't be contacting until this week-next week, etc. Did anyone find out exactly WHEN their interview weekend is being held? Based on last year it is potentially looking like the 25th-27th, which is a very popular date 😱

I contacted UIC last Friday and received the same generic information. Also, Harvard said that there is no department wide interviews (interviews depend on the faculty and that applications are still being reviewed).

Any chance gsu is still inviting ppl for the 25th? I saw on their website that they had 2 interview days..and my app status still says my letters haven't been received. I'm super bummed about this one

I made it out of Chicago yesterday on the last flight coming from an interview. I know the majority of their flights for today were cancelled. They're apparently expecting 2 ft. of snow today through Thursday, so I wouldn't hold my breath for anything coming out of schools in that area either....😱

To those who got invites from GSU- was this just for clinical general, or was it for clinical general, clinical community, and clinical neuropsych?

Jet Blue just cancelled all of their flights out of Boston for today and tomorrow.

I received this email: Unfortunately, yes the offers have been extended. Sorry for the news, but thought you would like to know sooner than later. Thanks, Paula

Hi,
I wouldn't expect anything to come out of the Ohio area as they received a great deal of ice. I just talked to a friend of mine who lives in the area and they said that the schools around her are closed. This weather is really getting on my nerves!

Also, wondering if I have an interview in Chicago on Monday would you book your flight or not because of the blizzard they are going to receive? Also, have you been flying in the night before or a couple of days before? Also, have you been leaving right after the interview or staying for a day? I'm just worried if I should try to go on a Saturday instead of Sunday (due to snow) or if I can leave the day before.
