2010-2011 PhD/PsyD Interview Invite thread

I inquired about statuses at these two universities (they replied refreshingly fast compared to some other programs..) --

Wisconsin: No formal interview day (mentors arrange individual visits). Different timelines, but pretty early, so many have not reviewed applications yet.

From Washington's website: 1/19/11: Interview invitations have started to go out across most areas of our program. They are extended by the faculty. The Grad Program Office does not have advance knowledge of who will be invited or how many are being invited out. Thanks for your continued patience.

I did see that on the main page, but it was only one invite. From what I heard the process is rolling per POI, and that interview for potential international students went out towards the end of Dec/early Jan, not domestic. I have yet to hear form one person though that received an invite, so I honestly don't think many if any POI have contacted anyone.

Invites went out quite a while ago, sorry🙁 If you check the main list you'll see it. I think it was maybe in late December or early Jan. I contacted them around that time and they said that they have a rolling process and would be contacting people over the next couple months, so there is always a chance I suppose. :xf:

Yeah, there hasn't been much chatter, that is true. I did PM with someone in December or Jan (I honestly can't remember) on this forum who received an invite. I'm not sure if they were a domestic applicant though. I can't even remember who it was! I'm brain dead at this point. Good luck either way. I'd be pleased as punch if it wasn't over.🙂
 
Hi Everyone 🙂 Very glad I found this forum!! Has anyone heard anything for the Counseling PhD program at University of Texas at Austin? I saw a post on gradcafe that someone was waitlisted recently. About 2 weeks ago I had contacted their department secretary and she said they had just begun looking at applications that week. She also said that invites had not gone out then (2 weeks ago) and that the interview date would most likely be late February but that she did not know the exact date at that time.

It's taking some MAJOR restraint keeping myself from contacting them again! I really don't want to be a bother. If anyone has any information, please let me know! Thanks!
 
Does anyone know if BU has finished sending out invites or not? I would really appreciate hearing from anyone already invited who their POI is! Congrats to those who already have invites there, and thanks!
 
How appropriate is it to email the grad coordinator at a school (Ohio State, specifically) and ask my status? Will that be seen as pushy? I'm a little afraid to know, but it's killing me not knowing. 🙁
 
Pitt is done extending interview invitations 🙁

Edit: Let me clarify.. Dr. Pogue-Geile, Director responded to my email which asked if all interview invites have been extended. He said yes. He also said we'd be receiving formal "letters" in the near future. I interpreted this as rejection letters.

Does anyone know, on average, how many people get invited to interview with the same POI?

I didn't get it so join the crowd if you didn't either! But if you applied to Clinical-Community, there may still be hope for you 🙂.

I'm not sure about the posting on Gradcafe. I called DePaul today, they said they were a little behind and e-mails will be going out tomorrow to those they are extending offers/interviews to.
 
That's a good question, PsychGrad1! I think "it depends" is the best answer, unfortunately. For example, a couple of years ago when I interviewed, one other person and I were interviewing for the same POI, but that was kind of a bigger department. As another example, pretend that there's say, 4-5 faculty in a department and 20-25 people are invited to interview. In this case the ratio would be around 5 people interviewing for the same POI, assuming each faculty is accepting the same number of students, which they may or may not be. Sheesh.

For my interview at LSU, there will be TEN people total interviewing with my POI. He has room for 2-4 students.. not the best odds..

Interesting. Do you know by chance if they were referring to the child or community track... or both? Either way thanks for the info!!

And just a side note, thanks to everyone who posts info about phone calls they have made to the various schools, that info is super helpful! 🙂
 
My interview went very well last week and was very pleasant with two faculty members, one of whom was my Professor of Interest and they said that I would hear back in about 2 weeks. Today I got an official letter of admission in the mail from CAU in Miami for the Clinical Psy.D program! Looks like I am moving to Florida!

To all who are waiting, keep hope alive and never give up! I applied only to 3 schools. Got accepted to 2 and rejected from one. 🙂

Thanks UhOh! I know that around 50 people got invited for an interview I am going to, and when I filled out my application, it said that 16 of the faculty would be willing to take on a new student..so, I really have no idea!

Yikes - 50? Wow. But 16 is a lot of faculty accepting too, so that should make it potentially like 3 people per? Not so bad. Is that a PsyD program?

But, anticipating I get A's in all three courses this would only raise my overal GPA from a 3.64 to a 3.66....and raise my psychology GPA from a 3.62 to a 3.67.

Do you think this small increase in GPA will be worth the money of taking all three of these classes? Or is this increase too small to make a difference to PhD admission committees?

No, a PhD program. I heard it was 50... But, I guess I can't be completely sure.

This is my second time applying. I still haven't received any invitations yet when 6 out of 7 universities that I applied to have popped up here and/or on gradcafe.

Does anyone know whether the process is different for international applicants? Should I be worried that I haven't been contacted yet or could the fact that I am an international applicant have something to do with this? Thanks in advance. 🙂

International students usually have to provide proof that they can speak English, like a TOEFL score... did you do that?
 
Wow, I guess I'm an amateur - never heard of that many people being invited to a PhD interview. Whatevs, hopefully you get in! Good luck!

According to the APA Graduate Study book, in the 2009-2010 application season they had 16 applicants to the School Psych PhD program. From there, they accepted 9 and enrolled 5. Hope that helps 🙂

Yes TWU is doing interviews this year. I don't know if we've sent out the invites yet though. We're not a back-up school though. 😡
 
Already had my interview with University of Toledo on Monday... I think it went pretty well but now I just wait! They are having one more interview day on 2/4, but applicants have already been invited. After that they will make admission offers.

I'm also waiting to hear from three other schools. I would be happy to get into any of the four I applied to... I just wish I knew already if I will get in anywhere!!

Sorry to hear that. It is strange because I had good feedback as well, that's what I don't understand. Yes, I'm sure we will both end up somewhere we're supposed to, even if we don't understand it now 😕

Hypothetical question.. if University A invites people to interview, some get accepted, but they all turn it down. I'm assuming they'd go back to the pool of people they interviewed. Is this correct in thinking?

Here are some FACTS all students should know. Clinical psychology is probably the most difficult graduate program in terms of how long the training takes and how many requirements you must pass (it will take you 8 years after college to become a licensed psychologist)

1) After completing your bachelor’s degree, a clinical psychology PHD or PsyD will take you an additional 5-7 years of full-time graduate study.

2) If your program is not funded, this may cost you $200,00 in loans.

3) There is a HUGE imbalance and shortage of internship positions (this is a requirement to graduate) and the stipend is $25,000 at best if you get into a super competitive position. There are currently about 100 applicants per 1-2 positions. Look at the APA MATCH RATES for each program before you apply. They should be close to 100%. THIS IS HUGELY IMPORTANT IN YOUR DECISION TO GO SOMEWHERE.

4) If you land a post-doc AFTER graduating, this will pay you between 25,000-45,000 on the high end.

5) After you graduate, you will still need 3,000 hours (this includes internship hours) to be licensed. You will need to take a demanding exam and some states have further regulations, such as an oral exam and case formulation, which may have very low passing rates (50% in NJ). This can delay your ability to practice after you graduate for several years!

6) Salaries in clinical psychology are among the lowest compared to other professions, particularly given the extensive training requirements you must pass (yes, its longer than medical school and much more competitive). Current salaries are very low for clinical post-docs (between 25,000-35,000). Average mid-career salaries can range from 60,000-85,000 plus depending on where you work.
