2010-2011 PhD/PsyD Interview Invite thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Has anyone gotten any invites from

CAU in MIA general PsyD track
Nova PhD & PsyD track

I got an email from Nova asking me if I wanted to consider the School Psychology PsyD program as well. Did anyone else get this message?

I look forward to everyones response

I got that email too, kinda confusing. I'm pretty sure it was a mass marketing email because school psych is WAYYYYYY off from my interests (corrections). I haven't heard anything else from them except that they received all of my app. materials. Still waiting...

Anyone hear from Texas A&M Clinical PhD? Just tried logging in to Howdy (twice!), and there was an error in the Applicant tab (twice).

I was interviewed last week and accepted this week from CAU. The Nova email is strange...hmmmm. I did not apply to them, but I had thought about it, Nova is wonderful! Let's keep in touch through this process. I am looking forward to hearing about your experiences.

I received the e-mail too. I just ignored it. I guess they haven't started contacting people beyond this e-mail.

Has anyone heard anything from Spalding's Psyd program? I saw that emails went out last friday, but I haven't anything at all.

Sorry to tell you this..but A & M has done sending out invites.

Hello all,

Are Temple, University of Pennsylvania, and Widener officially done with sending out interview invites?

Has anyone heard anything about La Salle, Rutgers (PhD), or Hofstra?

Good luck, everyone! Hang in there! 🙂

Hi everybody. I have been a silent fan of this forum for the last 6 months now.
I have been lurking around reading all your messages and learning a great deal from all you guys.
I am an international med grad and this is my first year applying.
It was great to see so many of you invited for interviews.
I was starting to lose hope as I even got a rejection today from Loyola.
But incidently, I received an interview from Yeshiva today. But, looks like it is going to cost me a fortune $16,035 per semester. I being an international student, will not be eligible for the student loan as well. So, I am in a dilemma now about attending the interview. So, please advice. Also, when is the latest I can reply to mail invite in case I decide to go.
Congrats to all who have got invites and for the rest, hang in there as my experience tells!

Thank you all in advance.

Here are some FACTS all students should know. Clinical psychology is probably the most difficult graduate program in terms of how long the training takes and how many requirements you must pass (it will take you 8 years after college to become a licensed psychologist)

1) After completing your bachelor’s degree, a clinical psychology PHD or PsyD will take you an additional 5-7 years of full-time graduate study.

2) If your program is not funded, this may cost you $200,00 in loans.

3) There is a HUGE imbalance and shortage of internship positions (this is a requirement to graduate) and the stipend is $25,000 at best if you get into a super competitive position. There are currently about 100 applicants per 1-2 positions. Look at the APA MATCH RATES for each program before you apply. They should be close to 100%. THIS IS HUGELY IMPORTANT IN YOUR DECISION TO GO SOMEWHERE.

4) If you land a post-doc AFTER graduating, this will pay you between 25,000-45,000 on the high end.

5) After you graduate, you will still need 3,000 hours (this includes internship hours) to be licensed. You will need to take a demanding exam and some states have further regulations, such as an oral exam and case formulation, which may have very low passing rates (50% in NJ). This can delay your ability to practice after you graduate for several years!

6) Salaries in clinical psychology are among the lowest compared to other professions, particularly given the extensive training requirements you must pass (yes, its longer than medical school and much more competitive). Current salaries are very low for clinical post-docs (between 25,000-35,000). Average mid-career salaries can range from 60,000-85,000 plus depending on where you work.

GOOD LUCK EVERYONE.

Bahahaha. Thank you for posting this.

Widener is not done. And I don't believe that LaSalle and Hofstra have sent invites. I applied to both and have heard from neither.

Temple and UPenn are interviewing this weekend, so yes, they are definitely finished, I'm sorry to say!

Congrats on your invite! ..I am also an international student...according to Insider's guide, Yeshiva clinical Phd has 33% of students who receive assistantship/fellowship, although I am not sure how much. Sometimes scholarship may qualify you for in-state tuition, which will be much lower. I think you may want to check with the department and international office about the details before you accept and attend the interview. Good luck.

Thanks ClinChildPsy13! Haha, I'm so stoked about it 🙂. I think it has to do with the number of posts that you make. I realized that after I made about 100, I got the "Senior" status. 🙂

Congrats. I was always wondering what the statuses mean, do you happen to know?

Hi aspiringphD2011 and welcome to SDN! One option is to attend the interview and ask about financing there. If you'd rather not spare the expense to go to the interview when you may not accept a position if offered, you may want to call/email a contact you have at Yeshiva (POI perhaps?) and ask them the best person who would be able to answer your question about this. It's a very good question, I'm sure they'd be glad to help.

Regarding how long you have to respond, some programs are more pushy than others. It sounds like you want your question answered before you attend the interview, so I would first ask your question and get an answer your satisfied with before responding to their invitation.

I love this forum for always helping out others!!!!!!!!!!😍

Hypothetical question.. if University A invites people to interview, some get accepted, but they all turn it down. I'm assuming they'd go back to the pool of people they interviewed. Is this correct in thinking?

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. One of the schools to which I am applying appears to stick to their top choice. If that person does not accept, they generally do not offer to the others who interviewed or dip into the waitlist pool. Your POI is the best source of information on this; s/he can tell you how interviewees are ranked and how second offers are made.
Best wishes!

Agreed; it definitely does depend on the program. Most seem to develop a wait list from which they will begin pulling applicants when the top choices do not accept. However, much of this can depend on the setup of the admissions process--whether it's the program as a whole who accepts you, or an individual POI; in the case of the latter, some POIs may invite many applicants to interview, while others will only invite their top choices and will not have any form of wait list.

Hi all-

Just e-mailed loyola (maryland) PsyD... not all invites have been sent out yet! They said that they won't all be out until Wednesday of next week. Hang in there!

do schools not feel the need to send out rejection letters? or do they wait until one of their interviewees has accepted a spot? Sorry to sound bitter, I'd just like to know either way.... I just received two emails from separate grad administrators, one stating that "i was not selected for an interview at this point in time..... i should hear something official in 4-6 weeks" (is that even a rejection, or a "postponement"?) and another one stating "all invitations have been sent out." could you just add the line there, "and you've been rejected!" what does it all mean? i just want some closure...

still waiting on a few schools though, but losing hope....

Sorry to hear that. It is strange because I had good feedback as well, that's what I don't understand. Yes, I'm sure we will both end up somewhere we're supposed to, even if we don't understand it now 😕

I have even heard stories on here about students who went to interviews and were told that they were basically shoe ins for a spot. Then, they were rejected.

Two of the best pieces of advice I have heard over and over again on this site: 1) take what professors say (their feedback) about your fit with their program with a grain of salt; 2) don't count on anything until it is in writing.

It all depends on the program. Some schools do a first screen (based on the paper info...GPA, GRE, experience) and rule applicants as good enough to consider for acceptance...or not. If you are ruled out in this first cut, you may get an early rejection letter at about the same time interviews go out. If you are ruled in, but not ranked high enough to get an interview, schools using this approach may not 'reject' you until they have seen the interviewees and have decided whether to invite more folks to interview. You'll then hear about rejection once offers of admission are sent out and positions are accepted. Personally, I would reply to the first email (that indicated you were not selected for an interview at this time) and state my continued strong interest in the program (listing out the reasons you feel you are a good fit AND mentioning all your POIs). Emails like this generally get forwarded on the the POIS and admissions committees, and may help you secure a second shot at an interview, if there is a second round. Hang in there....several schools are still in the process of reviewing applicants and you may still receive invites. :luck:

Thanks for doing that and sharing the info!! I am waiting too. I know that rejection letters went out already.

thanks lifesanillusion. i hadn't considered replying to that first email, but now i think i will. it really doesn't hurt at this point....

I'm really wondering what my chances are at one school because my POI invited me to come meet with him a month before the application was even due. He was really nice, showed me around the school, and took me out to lunch. He even looked over my personal statement. Interviews won't be sent out for awhile since the app wasn't due until Jan 15, but I'm still getting really nervous. 🙁

Could the person that received the rutgers invite, please message me who you POI was?

Just tryin' to pull the band aid off

:boom:

Just wondering if anyone knows if all the invites for the School Psychology program at UMaryland, College Park were extended? Thanks for any feedback!

Any news on Pepperdine's PsyD yet? I CANNOT stand the wait anymore. I am wondering how many people on this thread applied considering they require a MA to apply. In regards to people who applied to LaSalle, their deadline hasn't even passed (Feb 1).

So I have a dilemma... I applied to a school and got rejected in a mass email for an interview because apparently my application was not completed. However, they had messed up my application so I was told that my application would be considered to see if they would offer me an interview. But that was like two weeks ago and I still haven't heard anything back. In the beginning of this week I finally emailed the coordinator back and asked what the interview day was and when I would be notified if I was invited. But I still haven't heard anything back... what should I do???

Just emailed UVA (not Curry) to find out if all invitations have been extended. According to the program coordinator, faculty are still reviewing applications and extending invites. Interview day will be Feb. 11 for most areas, but apparently other areas "do their own individual thing."

I'd really like to hear from the person who received an invite from Rutgers too, please!

I emailed asking if all invites have been extended at UPenn or Virginia Tech. The response was yes, they have.

(Sigh.)

Edit: Add Boston University to that list as well.

Edit again: Add UCLA to that list as well.

Just received an interview invite for the University of Akron's Counseling Psychology PhD program. They will be hosting an interview day Friday, February 25th. Invite was sent via mass email from the chair of the admissions committee. Never been so excited to be going to Ohio in the winter!!!

Nothing yet from Pepperdine's PsyD...:xf:

Hi, I just registered with SDN, but I've been reading this forum religiously for a while. Just wanted to share, I contacted UIC today about interview invitations because I noticed someone recieved an invite earlier this week, and the graduate coordinater responded "faculty members are currently reviewing applications and will be reaching out to applicants regarding interviews soon." :xf:

+1

I corresponded with a professor at one of my top choices this fall before applying, and was told I would definitely be invited to interview. Needless to say, I haven't been, and I wish that I hadn't taken the statement at face value because I was much more disappointed and discouraged than I otherwise would have been.

Hey everyone,

Has anyone heard from George Mason, Boston University, or UMass Boston yet?

THe suspense is killing me!

I just contacted U of Cincinnati about when interview invitations would be sent, and the graduate coordinator responded "Files are being reviewed at this time. I can tell you our interview day is 2/25."

Could the person with the Texas Tech interview PM me the information? I know schools' interview dates change, but 2/4 is a lot earlier than last year so I just want confirmation to know whether I should keep on hoping for an invite or not.

Hi All!

I've been reading this forum for a while now too and am so happy that so many of you help each other out with great information and support. I've been seeing so many new members join and it gave me the extra push to join and start asking and answering questions.

So, my first question is...Can anyone who's been invited to the in-person interviews at Washington University in St. Louis (PhD Clinical) please PM me their POI? I had a phone interview with mine and haven't heard back yet and am getting pretty nervous. Thanks so much!

Woah wait, was this a mass email or a response to you specifically? Last time I applied, I didn't hear ANYTHING until I got my rejection letter in... September. Very lame. And I haven't heard anything this time around either.

Sorry for the confusion samusb, it was a response to me specifically. I emailed BU asking if any more invites would be sent. But it looks like if we didn't get an interview invite, we're not going to.
