Hey guys, I made a facebook group for everyone who was accepted to Stony Brook Medical School. I named it Stony Brook Medical Class of 2015, so you can join if you want to meet other people attending Stony Brook next year.

Does anyone know if there will be any changes to the curriculum for this years incoming class?

Ya....I was wondering about the same thing about this school... do most people get waitlisted after the interview??? So far from people I know who interviewed and SDN this seems to be the case..

doesn't seem like anybody has been accepted lately...:scared:

Yeaaa i was just going to ask if anyone has gotten accepted lately...=/ but i guess soon they should be making final decisions because the last day of interviews was march 15....

I searched FB and cannot find the Stony Brook page, can someone please post a link.

Just received the email for revisit day.

Thanks!

Here's the link... http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Stony-Brook-Medical-Class-of-2015/207517369264631

are you planning on going to the revisit? From what I have heard it seems like a lot of people are planning on attending. Hopefully I will see you there. Congrats on your acceptance!

Thank you for posting the link!

I am undecided about second look. For me, it is the first week of class and coming from the west coast this would be a three day trek, with two days out of class. Tough decision!

I wouldn't come out all the way for second look from California if you've already decided on coming to the school. When I went to second look last year, it wasn't any helpful and if you're looking to meet potential roommates, they send out a list later on of all the students who are looking. Orientation week is where you'll learn everything that you need to.

Does anyone have any insight into stony brook?

I have already written 2 update letters in the fall and winter - I haven't sent them anything since I was waitlisted in late november...

Not very much has changed - are they receptive at all to letters of interest? This waiting is killing me

I don't know how much it helps-- but I don't think it could hurt.

Just know that one really good update letter with substance is probably better than 2 mediocre letters.

I wrote them a letter recently updating them with some extracurriculars, and plan to write another one closer to May 15.

It's my top choice, but I have other acceptances and more waitlists known to move, so I'm grateful for what I have.

Anyone know where to find this year's match list?

Anyone know where to find this year's match list?

May not be posted publicly yet but they emailed them out to accepted students with our revisit day invite so if you want it, you could probably email Nancy for it. In my opinion, they did really well in matching this year. Only made me happier to get the chance to go here.

Good luck to all those still waiting to hear back.

It's also posted in the popular "match list thread" in the general pre-medical forums.

anyone hear back yet from a interview decision? It's been a little over 4 weeks since my interview and i'm getting anxious.

I know what you mean. I interviewed almost 6 weeks ago and the timeline was between 4-6 weeks. I really liked the school.

For all those still waiting, I feel like you will probably hear very soon. I mean the revisit day is on the 8th so I would assume that they would want everything released by then. Keeping my fingers crossed for you guys. Good Luck!

ditto to everything you said - im at 6 weeks too and waiting anxiously for any kind of communication from them.

+1; this wait is agonizing 🙁

I hope so; this school is my one of my top 3 choices and I hope to get in. Best of luck everyone :luck::xf::luck:

Just emailed them and they said they were in the process of making all applicant decisions.

Just received this email:

I am writing to inform you of the status of your candidacy for Stony Brook University School of Medicine. You are one of a select group of individuals (High Priority List) whose candidacy generated a great deal of enthusiasm with the Committee on Admissions. However, at this point in time, we have accepted significantly more applicants than available seats. We anticipate that by May 15, 2011, some of the multiply accepted candidates may withdraw their acceptance to Stony Brook. As those seats become available, we will likely be making offers to those on the High Priority List. Please let us know by May 1st whether you are still interested in attending Stony Brook and want to be considered for the High Priority List.

Is this just a nice way of saying that I'm on the waitlist, or is this really a separate list?

Wow, this sucks. I think this happened last year too. They over-accept and they end up HP waitlisting applicants later in the season. I think, similar to last year, no one that interviewed early on were put on this HP waitlist because they weren't sure if they accepted too many students.

I hope I still have a chance of getting off normal waitlist. In the end, I guess it doesn't matter. If you were going to be on waitlist, you probably would have went to waitlist. If you were going to be accepted, you either are outright accepted or HP waitlisted.

When you guys speak of being waitlisted, are you referring to the high priority list or another list?

i got regular waitlist...🙁🙁🙁 completely bummed out...nancy acevedo said "in the past, approximately 20% of the applicants were accepted into the entering class." first they pick off the high priority then regular waitlist..and of course waitlist is ranked and confidential...

She said 20% off regular waitlist, or 20% off HP and normal waitlist combined?

"the waitlist is ranked and confidential. We don't always have a High Priority Wait List. Applicants on that list will be selected first. At this time, we cannot predict how many applicants will ultimately be accepted off of the list, however, in the past, approximately 20% of the applicants were accepted into the entering class" It seems of HP and Normal....the movement of normal seems to depend on how many they put on HP

Thanks, good luck to everyone on waitlist.

On a past Stony Brook thread, some people even got off waitlist before high priority waitlist! I just wouldn't be too optimistic, or pessimistic about this ordeal.

Thanks for being so available! The one thing I was wondering about is the amount/depth of clinical experience in the 3rd and 4th year. I got the sense that medical students don't really get to do much at the school's affiliated hospitals and aren't really a part of the care team. Can you speak to that? Also, how many away rotations are you permitted to do in your fourth year?

My interviewer also mentioned that Stony Brook doesn't have the option for med students to do a sub-I in their 4th year. When I was looking on the website, it did seem like you could do a sub-I as an elective. I wasn't sure what the real deal was, so I was hoping someone could clarify. Thanks!! 😀

Awesome! Thanks muncher. This is very much appreciated. I get the sense that students at The Brook are pretty collaborative. And to top it off...the administration is super supportive. Some questions off the top of my head: 1. What made you choose Stony Brook? 2. Can you comment on the highs/lows of preclinical preparation for Boards? 3. Are you satisifed with your clinical experience? 4. What are your favorite and least favorite aspects of Stony Brook? Thanks so much for doing this.

anyone else been waiting 5+ months to hear their decision after interviewing...

When did you interview / have you learned anything from calling admissions?

I interviewed in late october. I called numerous times but they only said it is still under review. They did not give me a reason for the long delay. Not very helpful but they were still nice.

Sure! The day was from 11:30-3:30. We started off with an overview about the school. I guess I received a little bit more information than what we received on the interview day. They really emphasized that an education at Stony Brook is excellent and affordable. Dr. Fuhrer, Dr. Jordan, and Dr. Agnetti welcomed us. We then headed over to lunch. Basically about 10 students a table and a med student sat with us and answered all our questions. That was helpful in terms of putting things in perspective from the student end.

Then we were able to see the simulation center. The coolest part..something I have not seen at other schools... is a surgical simulation center. So there were like dafts of skins and even blood vessels so you can practice your surgical skills. Two accepted students also role-played for an OSCE and that was cool.

We then headed back to the auditorium and heard a lecture on global health. Stony is really increasing the opportunities for students to serve abroad. They had several programs that would fund this opportunity!

Finally, what I thought was the best part was the Med Student Panel. They were all happy to be at Stony and couldn't see themselves anywhere else! Off the top of my head, I remember that the student panelists consisted of students matching into emergency medicine, plastics, and anesthesiology. Overall a decent day. I just wish there was more opportunity to interact with fellow students...

Anyone else want to chime in...

Hey can you tell us how it was?
