Does anyone have any good leads on scholarships/ways to get med school paid for besides the military route?

I've read on some school websites, including Stony that have some scholarships you can apply for, but not much. It would be great if someone had a source for this.

Got wait-listed today 🙁((((((((((((.. I really wanted to move to NYC

so im interviewing...and hopefully it's not just for a waitlist spot 😕..but i was wondering if anyone that interviewed already had any advice..would be greatly appreciated it

Honestly just stay relaxed on the interview. Both of mine were just conversations, they just wanted to get to know me better. Just make sure you are prepared to talk about things you put on your application because they will probably come up. Everyone is so nice there, and really helpful so dont be nervous. Good luck!

The only thing that my second interviewer asked me about was my attendance at NCAA Nationals. Her daughter was an athlete in the same NCAA Sport. Seriously, that was all we talked about.

Be yourself and have fun!

ditto. really great school. I hope I get in...

this thread is so slow...

hey guys. i had an interview here set for feb 8 but i withdrew my application a couple weeks ago so i hope the spot goes to one of yall 🙂

thanks guys for the information....let's hope it goes well!! :xf:

I hope it was cross country! 😛

No, sorry, swimming. But they seemed to appriciate the time and committment that is involved in being an athlete during college.

Has anyone heard anything recently, i.e. acceptances, waitlists, rejections?

So I heard that most students are waitlisted here after the interview...can any of you confirm this?

I personally have no idea

I do know that last year they had a "High Priority WaitList" (basically students who interviewed later in the cycle after the class was already full who would have been accepted otherwise) so I am not sure if they are having that again this year or if they are accepting less students outright so they dont have that problem

Either way I'm on the WL and would freaking love to go here and be able to stay in my home NYC

Trying to find out more by contacting the admissions office today

That seems to be the case based on SDN but this isn't a representative sample.

And commuting from nyc is a bad idea. My interviewer told me some students commute from Queens, but even that is not a good idea.

well 50% are accepted after interview including those that come off the waitlist so if you do the math then yes *most* will be waitlisted after interview since it seems that outright rejections post-interview are rare

those who commute long distances usually have important obligations (wife/husband/kids) ....if you don't fall into that category then you shouldn't even consider it

I think the previous poster meant something more along the lines of 70%+ getting waitlisted. SDN is a biased sample where applicants rarely post rejections and under-report waitlists. Even so for SB, it seems the vast majority on SDN was waitlisted, which makes you wonder if they hadn't given out too many acceptances.

So far, according to them, they have given about 175 of about 350 acceptances. Each class is usually comprised of 15 to 20 percent of people that matriculate are from the waitlist for a class of 124 (20-25 from the waitlist).

These are all rough numbers, but probably a good estimate. They didn't really say how many people are initially put on the waitlist though. For some reason though I want to say they said 10% of the waitlist usually is accepted later which would mean 200-250 people on the waitlist (about a third of interviewees).

This really doesn't mean much, but if you like stressing over numbers, there you have it.

i hope you're not planning on commuting from NYC if you get in because that's a horrible idea.

No haha Im not planning on communting, but stony brook has like 95% match into NYC which is where God willing I want to do residency and live my life...

I would of course get an apt in or near stony brook for med school

I'm just hoping I get in ah:bang:

OK I have a crazy theory...

so we all know last year they over accepted early on and created the High Priority WL (people who scored high enough to get in but class was full)

OK so bare with me - in order to avoid this situation this year - it seems like they are underaccepting - doesn't it? I mean 175 out of 350 by Feb 5 and they interview through March 15 only???

Am I right?

I sure freaking hope so - in which case - hopefully those of us on the WL will be used to fill the class...

haha I have no proof for this theory and its totally biased bc I'm on the WL but...

WHO KNOWS

Hey guys so i just talked to admissions and the revisit date is April 8th. Hopefully I'll see some of you there!!

A few questions for updating stony brook after an acceptance:

Do we have to send in our transcripts from this past semester or just after we graduate? And if so, do we send it officially through the clearinghouse again?

Do we have to notify them of course changes (deviations from future courses listed in AMCAS), or just of changes in our academic plan (majors, minor, graduation dates)?
