I got an email from residential life saying room assignments will be emailed around June 7th and that up to that point, which was around a week ago, people have been getting their first preference as long as their forms were in on time 🙂

Hey, congrats on getting into DS! We exchanged a few words 2 years ago on MDapps.

That's interesting, I didn't know they had a communal kitchen for the classic singles. I'm a big cooker and have already created a menu for the year , so for me, the studio is worth it (cooking is "me time").

Haha *scratches at door like a hungry homeless dog*

Worst case scenario you just diagnose them with obstructive sleep apnea and put them on a CPAP 🙂

That's horrible. For their early birthday present, I'll just gift them an elective Laser-Assisted Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty. My treat.

::likes where this is going:: I can provide test advice!

I'll let you know what room I'm in so you can harass me to make it and possibly expand upon how you make your supplemental income (just kidding about that last part, sort of).

Now THAT'S an idea! We can do it right?....we're 3rd yrs

anyone start looking for jobs?

JOBS? Hope you're kidding...the only job it would be remotely possible to hold down during med school is working the front desk at the dorms or gym...you are signed up for hours of studying per night...and double that studying at least during test weeks...add a job on top of that and you get no sleep.

The admission study style inventory thing can be found in one of the emails sent to us by Downstate's admissions office, or here: http://spelunker.downstate.edu/surv...entory/revisedversion5studystyleinventory.htm

In regards to the White Coat Form, haven't received it yet..so no idea. Have fun with that thing above! 😛

@vulcan, do you know any current students at DS that have cars and how do they deal with parking near campus? Street parking or get a space at a garage for ~$150? Also, how much do they pay for a space at their apts? Would you mind asking for me? Thanks in advance 😀

I hope you have a more "modest" car, so that it doesn't become a target of crime. I've heard horror stories from friends about parking struggles and break-ins at areas that are nicer than the area around our school. Vulcan would probably be the best person to ask though! 🙂

Also, does anyone know if Downstate offers subsidized MTA Metrocards, or are we stuck with the $104/month bill for a 30 day unlimited ride card? 🙁

I might have a car this year and I'll be parking in the garage near the dorms. There's rules for parking there though...I think its only allowed from 2PM-8AM and its $1 for 12 hours, and then $1 an hour after that. Weekends you can park all day.

Other than that...I personally am not an advocate for the car at Downstate...there's always the risk of a break in, the people in the area are horrible drivers, and....well where are you goin with it anyway...yall gotta study 😛

It is doable though, if you still wanna have it.

No they don't subsidize🙁

If anyone has been listening to the news or even visited the downstate website, you may have heard about the merger with LICH. Does anyone know how this may affect us as MS1s?

I don't know whose it is, but someone has a black car that parks in front of the school almost every day and its got the bat symbol where the car logo usually goes. Hasn't been broken into yet...somehow

It won't. It only affects the 3rd/4th years, as we will be rotating through there. As for how it will impact us...all I know is that supposedly there won't be anymore SGU students there.

Out of curiosity, are they any requirements about who can park there? $1/12 hours seems toooo cheap!

It'll probably mean we get to rotate thru there in the coming years, which I thought we already were able to as it was listed in the list of hospitals through which we rotate. Also, its new name is supposedly: "SUNY Downstate Medical Center University Hospital of Brooklyn at Long Island College Hospital."

My cousin did his residency at that hospital, so I'm sure he'll be interested to hear the news when I tell him!

Lol, hmm...I should just WEAR the bat symbol so people don't mess with me....although that just sounds like a joke, considering I'm about as scrawny as they come...

The hours restrictions are why they let people park there for so cheap, but apparently those are the parking rates. The only people who can park there all the time are employees and students on rotation at UHB and possibly KCH.

As for the LICH thing...we were able to rotate there before, but there were complaints about SGU students trying to gunner us out of cases and surgeries. Now theyre gone. I am likely doing a rotation or two there this year.

Has anyone here gotten an e-mail about the criminal background check? I haven't heard a peep.

Whoops, never read the hours restriction. Makes complete sense though, 2PM-8AM would be ideal for housing guests and whatnot..which is probably rarer than say, full time students that insist on driving. It's funny though, I always hated parking at my school, but who knew parking at Downstate would be even worse (well, I take that back...it's a school in a huge city in which most don't even have cars..)

Has anyone here gotten an e-mail about the criminal background check? I haven't heard a peep.

I never gotten an email about the CBC, then again, I already had mine done, so there is a green check by it. Do you guys have red X's?

For those who took the BLS for healthcare providers, how much did you guys pay?

$50 for the class, $15 for the manual...so 65 in total. I think prices are lower in Cali for some reason...or maybe just my area. I say that bc I noticed prices in NYC were about $90?

I don't know if you noticed, Vulcan, but someone's been gambling with chance and parking their Ducati black/red motorbike numerous times on Lenox Rd and so far it's unscathed. 🙄

I thought I saw a bike like that a few times...brave souls they are...although my RA parked on the street all year and nothing happened to her car...

In conclusion, my RA is Batman 😎

I have a check by my background check under the application checklist, although I had it done for the school I was accepted at before I got of the waitlist here, assume they just used that

+1; pretty sure they can just pull it out of the Certiphi database.

accepted 5/13 and got the certiphi email yesternight (yes, I said yesternight).

got financial aid, all loans, mostly unsubsidized and grad plus loans... terrible -_-

it's okay, it's just money (I am not bragging. My family is poor, and I am going to take out full loans) . We need to focus on the fact that we got into medical school. Tfhat's what matter the most! And congraz or acceptance!!

They are super fast! I got the email yesterday afternoon, finished it last night, and i got the confirmation today afternoon. Nice! But i did feel a little bit nervous once I saw how they have gone through every single database to search for my criminal record. It's a relief that I am clear for all.

so that is not final aid? it will be updated later? i submitted my form after 3/31 so i might be disqualified anyway -_-

It's "final" for the most part; some will receive institutional aid from DS as the Fin aid office sees fit (if there's any money to go around). The hint I was given was "don't reallly expect much, if anything"

Does anyone else here feel really lucky? We got into (arguably) the best state school in New York and we're paying half as much as those in private schools. We're extremely fortunate.

Love the enthusiasm! And you haven't even gotten here yet....wait until you check out the ER. For the half tuition that we're paying, we have the opportunity (even in first year!) to be trained in an ER that's been #1 in penetrating traumas for almost 2 decades. The KCH ER is so good they actually train combat medics there.

Just visited the dorms and loved it!

Like crazyboy said...*high five*, it'll be one hell of an experience going to school here (in a good way)! Even though I'm paying out the ass for M1, it is no bigd deal considering it's still cheaper once I add in M2-M4) 🙂

:luck: to everyone and I look forward to meeting all of you in the Fall! 🙂 Yay for 2015! 🙂

Ive been to DS many times, worked there 1 summer and also kings county 1 summer. The conditions of KS is not very good but thats y there are stuff to see =\

I'm kind of disappointed in the type of loans i got. ~85% in unsubsidized and grad plus loans...
