Is anyone worried about living in Newark and traveling into the city each weekend to visit people, go out, etc and coming back late at night or in the early AM? It almost seems like it would be better to live in the city and travel to Newark. Then, the trip would be made in the morning. Has anyone thought about this, seems to be the downside of the school? Althought rent in the city is obviously a major downer.

I am a second-year at NJMS, and find that as long as you take proper precautions at night, as I hope you would in any major city, you should be able to go out in Newark and come home safe and sound. Just like any other city, there are areas to avoid, but the bars and restaurants are predominantly in safer neighborhoods. There is also a free bus shuttle service between the school and the PATH train, which takes you into NYC, and that provides both an extra level of safety and convenience. Also, remember that with an urban city like Newark comes a tremendous patient population, which you may not find in more affluent areas of the country.

That being said, a good percentage of students live outside of the dorms, either in Newark or neighboring cities (Montclair, Hoboken, etc.), and it is usually a simple commute each way. I live in Hoboken, and that provides a nice separation between school and home life. I encourage you to PM me if you have any questions about NJMS.

I've heard that they are much more expensive than the alternative housing options, but are generally a good idea for the first year. Ridiculously safe and convenient, although I've heard there are fairly strict rules.

Safe, yes...provided you don't go outside at all. The campus is not exactly in a safe neighborhood. There are housing projects across the street from the dorm. Convenient, yes. It's a 5 min walk to class without going outside. Generally a good idea for first year....I'd say no. You will have plenty of opportunity to meet and hang out with classmates no matter where you live, and for less rent you can live in a safe, nice neighborhood in a neighboring town. They are charging Hoboken rents in central ward Newark. To me it wasn't worth it.

Got an email today saying I was placed on a "priority alternate" list, which is the first group of students they review if any seats become available. The email states they don't begin looking through the list until June.

Does anyone have an idea of where this puts me? How much of a shot do I have of getting off of this list?

When did you interview? Usually the list will start to clear out as students drop acceptances to other schools. Obviously this can cause a chain effect that I assume could get pretty big.

I interviewed in December. Do you think there's a decent chance that I'll get off the waitlist? And any idea when they might start going to the wait list? Is that something that'll happen in May/June? I've heard of people getting acceptances off of waitlists through the summer. Not sure how hopeful to be here.

Also I realize I just asked you a string of questions that are completely unreasonable for you to answer haha, but thanks for any help you can give me.

your chance of getting off the waitlist depends on how many accepted students rescind their offer by may 15. you can check last year's thread for info about WL movement. i think most movement, if any, will occur during the middle and end of may. as for hope, people have gotten acceptances the week before orientation, but those are rare cases. GL.

hey does anyone know of good areas to live 10-15 min away from newark that's not hoboken

I've heard Montclair mentioned a bunch

Both pricey neighborhoods though 🙁

Has anyone been successful in withdrawing their acceptance and getting their deposit refunded? I was accepted in October and sent in my deposit, but then indicated to the dean that I wanted to withdraw in mid January. Haven't gotten the refund yet. I emailed them yesterday- no response yet. Anyone know how long this should take?

I was also accepted in October and withdrew (last week), but have not yet gotten a response. However, I do know that our deposits weren't actually "deposited." Med schools simply hold onto your check, and if you matriculate, they cash it and apply it towards tuition. At least, this has been the case for all of my acceptances. Not sure if they just mail the check back to you or shred it...

i could have sworn they deposited mine..

They definitely deposited my check. My copy of the MSAR says the deposit if refundable by May 15th. I haven't actually seen this confirmed in any NJMS materials though.

they sent me a confirmation letter saying they received the deposit.

Are acceptances still going out?

I've been wondering the exact same thing. Seems like no one on SDN has proclaimed an acceptance in a long time, and looking over the same thread for the previous two years, no one got acceptances this late either.

Granted, SDN members are a relatively small sample size, but it's still disheartening. Is there anyone who has been accepted in the past month, or knows anyone who has been?

I don't think so... I seem to remember Dean Heinrich saying that interviews ended right around Christmas/New Year's and that people would be notified by the end of January. Could be wrong, but that's what I remember...

you're right, he said they should be all done with initial acceptances by jan.

For those discussing housing, as the urrugby mentioned - there are definitely some same bits of Newark that are fine to live in. My brother has been at school in Newark for 3 years now, and he is going to help me find a better part town to live in (Ironbound for example).

I fully intend on living off campus as the dorms seem majorly overpriced considering the rental rates in Newark

😀

In all honesty, the perception in the ironbound is that it's a tight-knit community and safer than the bad areas of Newark, (north ward, west ward) for sure.

I haven't had many issues in Newark these past few years, save for my car getting broken into and the ignition ripped out when I parked across the street from the dorms one day last summer 😡 Glad they couldn't hotwire my car. I recommend buying a hangtag to park in university lots for this reason, obviously lol

Are there problems in Ironbound? Yes; Is it perfect? No.

But its sure better than some other parts of Newark as you mentioned lol. Your link indicates 3-4 shootings between 2008 and now. One a year? In Newark? Seems pretty good odds to me considering

I think as long as your smart about it, it shouldnt be too tough. I live in West Philly now, and havent had a problem in the 2 years ive been here

I received a letter of regret and a survey, along with my $100 deposit refund check, yesterday from NJMS. (Apologies about my earlier comment in error - my dad confirmed to me that the deposit check had indeed been deposited by NJMS)

I mailed in my letter of withdrawal two weeks ago (2/5). The letter of regret was dated 2/16.

anyone else having trouble deciding between dorms or off-campus? i wouldn't respect myself for paying ~$900/mo to live in that area of newark. decisions, decisions..

leaning towards off campus...

Definitely off-campus.

There are some really nice three bedroom places for $1500 total. there are a few on CL as examples

I can't justify paying double to live in the dorms

the only thing stopping me is the social aspect of the dorms. it's so much easier to meet people when you're right next to em

you'll meet people in class and on campus....

And everyone knows that is not the same thing.

we'll aren't the people in the dorms the same people on campus? I would reckon that you would know as many of your dorm neighbors as neighbors in an off campus setting....just sayin'

I am just saying waving hello to people on campus is a little different than living in the same place.

had my second interview in december. has anyone who had a second interview gotten in recently?

3.6/34 in-state

I had my second interview towards the end of december, and they got back to me 8weeks later with a wait list. Did you hear back from them yet?

are all acceptances called?

I remember hearing that they called and mailed all acceptances when I interviewed (12/20). I called the admissions office this morning and was told that I would have a decision in the next two weeks and that acceptances are still going out. Hope this helps anyone trying to gauge about when they should hear back. It would be a total of 12 wks for me.

Hi all,

NJMS is my first choice and I wanted to ask those of you who are applying to NJMS what you think of my numbers. I will be applying this summer and I just got my MCAT score yesterday. PS-13, BS-13, V-7, Total= 33R

Do you guys think i have a shot at NJMS despite that low verbal? Do you recommend retaking?
Also does anyone know anything about Early Decision and if that will increase my chances? I would really like to do EDP to NJMS.

Thanks, and good luck to you guys.

Request a meeting with Dean Heinrich - I have a feeling he will tell you to retake, get at least a 9 on VR, and then do ED. Try to meet ASAP 🙂

Agreed with Bobow98 - I think you are going to have to re-take it with a verbal of 7

Thank you for the responses. I will try to arrange a meeting, hopefully I will be able to.

Btw - do you guys think that ED will have more lenient numbers in terms of MCAT. Although that 7 really looks bad, i really don't want to have to take it again and risk getting lower on sciences, or worst yet, getting the same score again on verbal. What do you guys hear about ED average MCATs scores?

-Thanks,

-Thanks,

The way ED was explained to me by my pre-med advisor is that it is for stronger-than-average applicants (for that specific med school's pool), and that you apply because of high grades/MCAT, not in spite of low ones. Therefore, I would think that ED is less lenient in terms of numbers (and has higher scores than RD)... However, some schools will superscore (I think), if you are able to raise verbal and sciences happen to go down.

ED is used for someone who would be able to get in RD but really wants to go to a school and risks it (ED is a risk because if you don't get in, you get submitted to the other schools in October - very late in the game)...

ED at this school is also strongly encouraged for re-applicants who have strengthened their resume in other ways, like doing SMP, research, etc. MCAT scores are not more lenient but I think undergrad GPA is, as long as you have a good Masters GPA or PostBac work (I say this from observing labmates getting into this school).

I tend to agree with Bobow98's interpretation of EDP - I don't think it will cover up for a low verbal score.

If you had a slightly low GPA or had some other minor hole in your application then I think EDP helps one overcome that

So in terms of ED...if you have a lower GPA but a high MCAT say 35 then do you recommend ED or waiting for regular?

its low...talking 3.0. Had one bad term and then just can't seem to bring it up. So you think regular is the way to go?

THank you all for the responses,

on that same note, how about GPA of 4.00 with the MCAT previously mentioned PS-13, BS-13, V-7, Total= 33R

Would you recommend ED?

I don't think I would recommend ED, but do you have a pre-med advisor you can discuss this with? Someone with years of experience might be better equipped to answer such a question (unless you are here just seeking additional feedback?)
