Thanks! Do you get to choose/list your preferences for your sites?

If you aren't signed up for a whole year at a single site, you take part in the lottery. It can be a simple or a complex process depending on how much you care about specific sites and how anal-retentive you are.

The lottery system lets you plan out when you want to do your rotations, and where you want to do them (except for Family Medicine. The time is assigned in the normal lottery, but since there are so many little sites for it the location is its own separate FM lottery). You can assign different priorities, and leave sites blank if all your care about is the timing like doing Medicine first to give you a good foundation, or leave time blank if all you care about is doing Surgery at Easton.

Or you can leave everything blank if you give 0 craps, and the system will just chuck a random schedule at you.

In general, depending on how specific your requests are, you may get one or two. I got psych, surgery, and medicine when and where I wanted them. Psych at Friends, where I did it, was a pretty hot commodity but I aimed for the lowest hanging fruit with surg/medicine, asking for Philadelphia area stuff which has a lot of slots since I didn't want to move away for them.

Ultimately, if you are truly dissatisfied with your schedule, you can engage in horsetrading with your classmates. "I'll give you peds at St. Chris if you'll swap surgery with me so I don't have to do it first."

As long as everyone comes out of the process with a functional schedule, the school gives you a thumbs up.

The lottery has changed a little bit since we've done it. Students first enter the lottery to get the order of their sites. A few weeks later they do another one to find out exactly where they're going.

That should cut down on the labyrinthine lottery forms covering every possible contingency that some folks spend weeks crafting.

Which is good, because when all of that explodes in their faces I assume it is really disheartening.

xanthomondo and QuizzicalApe, thanks guys so much for your help! It was really helpful.

Quick question... I have gotten a final decision message but no letter yet. I just now got an email asking me to file my FAFSA, so I'm wondering... does that mean I was accepted? Are there any other applicants that have not been accepted/waitlisted that have gotten this email? Thanks!

Exact same situation and was wondering this as well. Hope this is a good sign and not a huge troll! :xf:

I'm in the same boat as you as well! Still waiting for my letter and I get this email.

When did you get the final status? I think I got mine of 2/17 but not really sure. I am OOS so that's why I'm thinking it may be taking the letter longer to get to me...

I'm in PA in the same boat and still no letter. Hope this email is a good sign

Same day as you as well and I live in PA. Hopefully we can get our letters tomorrow or Saturday!

Well, let us all know if any of you get and good news in the near future! Good luck to everyone and I think it is a good sign... why would they ask us for FAFSA info if we were rejected? Hum... :xf:

i got the FAFSA e-mail before i received my letter-and I was accepted! so it's looking good for you!!!

I've been "under the review by committee" now for 4 weeks. Has anyone had that status for that long? edit, never mind....just checked..." a final decision has been made"

I was with the committee for around 11 weeks 😛 Hopefully all of us get good letters in the mail!

For anyone who was accepted, is it a big package that comes in the mail or is it just a small envelope with the letter?

Also, just called to confirm my address because I got the final decision on Friday 2/17 and still didn't have a letter today... The person I talked to was very nice and told me that the letters didn't go out until Wednesday. Hope that helps ease anxiety if anyone else is still waiting on a letter!

ACCEPTED!!! woohoo!! Love the school! :soexcited: Hope you all get good news today as well👍

yellowpwr, did you receive the FAFSA e-mail immediately after the committee updated your status to final decision? or a few days after? thanks!

I got the change in status on a Friday and the FAFSA email came the next Thursday.

I have a deposit for a DO school due this week for a ridiculous amount of money. Since I got the final decision status this past Friday, is there ANY way that Drexel would tell me if I was accepted/rejected over the phone? I really don't want to have to waste money if I've been accepted.

This predicament seems eerily familiar to that ethics essay we wrote, LOL.

I see two options. Call Drexel, explain your predicament not using school names, and politely ask for your status. If they are unable to tell you, at the least you can gain more info about when final decision letters will be sent out (It looks like it took about 8 days from final decision status for the last batch of people).

Option two: pay for saving the D.O. spot and wait for Drexel's letter. Best case scenario: Drexel Acceptance (and you're out the D.O. money). But who cares! You got into Drexel! Yay!
Worst case scenario: D.O. acceptance! Still very awesome! It's a win-win 😀

Option three is that ethical gray area where one could theoretically call up the D.O. school and ask for an extension for replying to their offer. That would require some delicate diplomacy (and perhaps outright lying about your need for an extension) that could backfire later down the road.

I would stick with option two. Borrow some money from parents/ grandparents/ credit card and save your D.O. spot. Pick up a summer job/extra hours, if necessary, to work off this debt during the summer.

My attitude is that you've already spent thousands on dollars on this process and are headed into owing hundreds of thousands of dollars more for school itself. In the face of that, what's an extra thousand or so added to your bill? It's a necessary evil for success later down the road. Good luck, man.

Yea, it's a tricky situation 😛 I'm not sure what I want to do. I'll probably just hope for that financial aid email because it seems like that means acceptance. It seems to be coming a little less than a week after the final status was given.

I would call and ask for an extension. Tell them your next paycheck is like 1 week away and you will have the money by then.

accepted in early december but never got this "FAFSA email" that we are speaking of. what did it say?

Don't quote me on this, but I think there is some sort of law in PA that prohibits them from giving you your decision over the phone.

However, definitely e-mail the director of admissions explaining your situation. They may be able to work around this. Good luck.

Yeah..ive heard of people getting faxed their decision though....it cant hurt to call and ask

Thanks for the responses everyone. I'll give them a call tomorrow morning. I'm so nervous to know!!

Hey dlouis,
Yea I agree with most people, first contact Drexel to see if they can let you know a little in advance considering your situation, if not I would definitely ask for a 1 or 2 week extension if at all possible from the D.O. school b/c I think it's ridiculous to make a large deposit, like the $1500 deposit many schools require, to just be accepted to another school a few days later! That's a lotta $! Def. doesn't hurt to askkk 🙂

Unfortunately, I tried asking for an extension and it was rejected. I emailed the director of admissions at Drexel so we'll see if I get a response! Thanks

I guess Drexel would have come back to you before now if only that guy who's been hanging on to a Drexel acceptance and some other acceptances would make up his mind and free you from this dilemma.🙂

My status went from "Your interview has been scheduled..." to "under review by admissions committee". Granted, I finally broke down and called to find out what was going on... Sounds like they're pretty behind in terms of updating our online statuses.

Also, I wanted to mention that every time I've called their admissions office (to ask an annoying, frantic question that I'm sure a hundred other people have already asked that day), everyone has been very understanding, patient, and kind. 👍

🙁Does Drexel do silent rejections, status still says your file has been reviewed and will be re-evaluated later in the season for a final decision,

I'm so sorry to hear that dlouis! I know how rejections can sting. At least you've got a DO acceptance. You're going to be a doctor!! I'm sorry again. I know Drexel was your top choice.

Thank you. It's true about the DO acceptance, plus a few other MD waitlists and one more MD decision in April which I'm really excited for.

I think what really pisses me off is that I interviewed in NOVEMBER. I feel that I got undercut because a good portion of the class has already been picked. If I went to committee a few weeks after, who knows what would have happened.

Maybe that's just an excuse and I would have been rejected either way. Good luck to everyone else waiting!

I just canceled my interview for March 6. Good luck everyone!
