I am debating declining my interview and withdrawing my application because I got accepted to my state school, which I will almost certainly attend bc of cost. Thus, I don't want to take an interview spot from somebody else who wants to go there.

But before I decline, I was wondering if anybody knows anything about scholarships? I know the inaugural class got 20k a year, but what about the second class? Does hofstra have merit scholarships? I checked their website, but most of it was info for need-based fin aid. My stats aren't stellar, but if there is hope that I don't have to pay sticker price for hofstra, I would still like to learn more about this innovative new school.

You might also want to look into the North Shore-LIJ loans the school offers:

Med school is expensive, but that and the scholarship you would get could make it closer in lifetime cost to your state school. Or not, but it could be worth looking at the difference and seeing if you could live with it.
 
Hi!!! I am interviewing at Hofstra on Thursday, November 3rd. I was wondering if there are any other females who are willing to split the cost of the Marriott Hotel Room the night before (Weds night). Please private message me asap!!! Thank you!!
 
Ok guys, I'm gonna be in Hempstead on Nov. 16, and I'm interviewing on the 17th. Long Island Marriott Hotel, who is down to split a room, I'm talking packing as many of you in and get the cost down!!! Guys and girls welcome, PM me if you want or reply here. SERIOUSLY want to minimize costs.
 
I'm interviewing tomorrow (II on 10/11, In the Area Request was approved), and my opinion is that the Marriott "discount" offered by Hofstra is a ripoff. It's the only hotel their website officially endorses, and there are plenty of other cheaper hotels in the surrounding area. I'm staying at the EconoLodge for about $80, while the Marriott "discount" is about twice as much.

Somebody can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think they said they were interviewing around 700 people and trying to create a class of 60 students. So, that's roughly less than 10% of interviewees will be MATRICULATING, but the ACCEPTED number of interviewees should be higher (I think I read somewhere that it was more than double the number of accepted students).

For those who have received interviews- is anyone having trouble with the "schedule your interview" calendar on their site? It says that "green dates" are available...but I have no green dates and no functional links on Nov, Dec, or Jan calendars...

Keep checking later into the year. I don't think that there are any Nov/Dec/Jan dates available at the moment. I think there are for February and later. If you need or would really like an earlier date, I guess you could try calling admissions and asking if anything has opened up?

Hmm, well, Feb is way late, lol.
 
Recently interviewed here. Hofstra has a great curriculum and early clinical rotations that other schools cannot compare to. If you matriculate here, Hofstra will definitely take care of you as long as you work hard and take initiative.

Yes it is. Feb 17th is the earliest at the moment. I'm going to call tomorrow though cause I"m going to be in the general area first week of december and since I"m coming from 2000 miles away, maybe they'll be able to fit me in.
 
interviewed here 10/7..

super chill place, and awesome innovative curriculum!

definitely hoping for an acceptance..i think they said sometime in Nov or Dec.. not sure tho

Nov or Dec?? They said they weren't sure but last year they started Mid-January. I hope you're right though because I'm anxious to hear back.

did they say mid jan? i dont recall hearing that..

i mainly remember them saying that they dont know exactly when, cuz its a new school and they are basically figuring it out as they go along.. lol

so now im doubting myself if i heard that.. (been a lot of interviews so it blurs together..)

heres for hoping its november/december!!!!!

loved hofstra..thought the school was awesome

When I interviewed on 10/20... they said January too... but I saw last year that folks found out by december.

ALSO... the LIJ loans seem awesome.. from what they explained... they are fixed rate 4-5% interest rate... which is AWESOME. because federal loans are ~5.6-7.9. (forget which one is the unsub %)
 
Will interviewing in Feb be worse than interviewing in Dec?

Would either of you be willing to elaborate? Given that it's a new school, I'm reticent to be a guinea pig...What did they say that made you feel so excited about the school?
 
Still looking to split a room at Anastasia's Bed and Breakfast on the 16th before interviewing on the 17th. Guy here, do not care who wants to split the room I just want to cut costs k thx bai.

I personally learn better through small groups and their curriculum is centered around small-group learning. The facilities are all brand new and reserved exclusively for the medical students' use, the faculty I met there all seemed genuinely excited about the school and about teaching the students. And the students I met seemed really happy with their choice to attend Hofstra. Augh I wanna goooo

We were just making conversation with the director of admissions when I interviewed back in early October and I asked which interview group we were. She said we were the fourth, "so still early, so we still have energy and are excited... But just wait until February, we'll be tired by then." Sorry to disappoint, but then again, only 10% will be accepted from the interview groups. It is what it is.
 
Judging from last years thread, I would just say expect crazy things from admissions.

I wouldn't want to be a guinea pig either, but people last year didn't seem to mind since they got a full ride. Money fixes everything I guess.

Plus, the LIJ loans don't accumulate interest until after residency, and if you end up working for LIJ, there is debt forgiveness.

Correction. 10% matriculate - they'll accept far higher than that to fill the class. If I were a betting person, I'd say they'll fill their waitlist at least once and a half, or accepting 150 people out of 600.

Two corrections: The inaugural class received a 20k scholarship, which is a half ride. Also, I was there on Thursday, and they admitted that they learned a lot from last year's waitlist and how to do one, and that they held on to far too many people. It was their first time, so this year should be better.

If you got an interview, you have a chance. We only interview three days a week (some weeks one or two or zero), with 12-15 per day, so even by February, there will have not been a trillion people interviewed. No one's wasting time interviewing people with 0% of getting in.

People with winter interviews last year are in the class now; take that for what you will. I got into the first and last schools that I interviewed at last year, so just do your best, get excited about the school and try to get the most you can out of interview day.

This seems like a reason to invite less people. Has Hofstra invited a lot more than other schools?
 
Interview Invite! It was a pleasant surprise after awhile. Unfortunately all the dates ate are after mid-Feb...

on my interview day, the admissions lady said they were only interviewing 650 this year, compared to 800 last year.
 
II today. complete wayyyy back when. Have we figured out this year's odds? Only spots in feb available. i am going to call and try to get earlier.
 
I have an interview scheduled for 11/11/11. Does anyone want to trade this interview date for a date in December? I know it's extremely last minute, but I have had an emergency come up and won't be able to make it. 🙁
 
I'm hoping someone more familiar with the area might be able to answer this.

I'm going to be staying in the city with a friend and for my NYU interview. What's the best (least complicated ideally) way to get from the city up to Hempstead?

I'm sure Hofstra's going to get annoyed with me continually redoing my interview date. I had originally scheduled for Feb 6th, then Jan 27th opened up and I switched cause I didn't want to be traveling on my fiance's birthday then switched to Jan 20th when it opened because I'll be in the city the 14th for another interview 😛

Also interviewed at NYU and stayed in the city. Get up mad early, take LIRR get off at hempstead (6:47am train) and cab it that morning to hofstra. I was able to make it on time. No need to call ahead for a cab, there's a taxi hub right in front of the station
 
Woke up at 5:30am from brooklyn to get to the interview via train LIRR and cab.

I think if you're within 5 days of your interview you're supposed to call the Admissions office if you want to reschedule though; there's a number on the scheduling portal. Good luck!
 
There's a free shuttle from Hempstead that leaves after the LIRR arrives. I didn't want to risk it and took a cab ($6) but other people took the shuttle and made it.
