And that's matriculated, not accepted

My apologies! I had the wrong site open when I quoted the class info. I've edited it to the correct info from Hofstra's FAQ page.
And, yes, I meant matriculated. Thanks 🙂

Interviewed on 10/13. It's a very up and coming place with friendly admissions staff and happy students. Not a traditional medical school in any regards though. There are NO multiple choice exams, ALL essay questions. No traditional lectures either.

Is hofstra receptive to in the area interview? From what i been seeing in the thread, it seems like most of the spots are filled to January already?

I have no idea, but it's definitely worth a shot. There seem to be a few open spots earlier as people have canceled, so you might get lucky.

It's wishful thinking on my part - I got excited for a minute at the thought of tracker, then saw the url. More schools should have trackers.

around what time was your day over?

Does anyone think the 33 MCAT average for the inaugural class has something to do with the scholarship that's given to every student of the inaugural class?

The interview day ended around 2:30pm. The financial aid officer also said they were considering an award package for the 2nd incoming class of around $10000/yr. Not as much as the 20k the inaugural class got, but still something...

This is true. Our "lectures" revolve around some kind of team-based learning case where we use what is presented to solve problems in groups of 5 or 8.
We also have two weekly cases used to study the basic sciences, instead of straight up reading and lectures. Thinking, not memorizing!

Enjoy your interview days.

Aww, sorry! And I agree, the interview tracker would be nice for more schools. The only downside would be to see interview slots getting filled up while your inbox remains empty...

The shuttle (Blue Beetle) will get you there on time. It runs through the night, but it picks up at Mineola after 7pm and before 7am. Call if you're not sure which one.

A cab is also possible. There are generally one or two that hang around the train stations, but if not, there are many many taxi numbers that you can look up.

EDIT: And Hofstra finally sent my invite. My possible dates are late January/early February, but I got a call yesterday saying that there are extra spots earlier and to call to set one up.

Any idea how much a cab from mineola would be? That bus schedule is making my head spin.

There is a taxi station right next to the station. Cab ride is about 10-15 dollars. If you're going from the station straight to Hofstra, you can just take the Blue Beetle, because it's timed to arrive just after the train. To go back to the station, though, I highly recommend taking a taxi because the timing gets weird.

I interviewed last wk and took a taxi from Hempstead to Hofstra only $6! No one in our interview group got there that morning via shuttle because people didn't want to risk the close timing. However, the shuttle is provided to all interviewees at the end of the day who are going back via Hempstead or mineola.

In that case, definitely use the shuttle. I was not aware that they did a special run for applicants, but that actually does make sense.

Hempstead to Hofstra is closer than Mineola to Hofstra. Is there a taxi station at the Hempstead station? I'm not sure because I always use Mineola. It also depends on what time you arrive.

Without a doubt.

Just an observation. It amazes me what free money can make people do. I wish I could just make a 50-100k "donation" 😉 and just get in. It would be worth every single penny.

Yes there is a taxi station right in front of Hempstead station.

I really dont think a donation would help. I think it might be affective for undergrad but I dont think 100 grand or more would help with med shcools. they want students who can do the course work and suceed. And then there is the ethics in medicine issue. Am I naive?

You are right.

But if given the opportunity, I would buy my way into a medical school that is on the top of my list. That would just mean I would have to drain my Porsche funds and wait on the new 991 a little bit longer. It may not be ethical, but I have no shame admitting that I would if I could.

Ethics in general is a big issue especially with students abusing Ritalin.

And I was talking about a donation 😉. There is nothing unethical about a donation, right? 😀

What train were you able to catch? 2:11? 3:11?

I decided to rent a car... does anyone know how bad the traffic is near hofstra ( I should be taking the northern state parkway and then the Meadowbrook parkway) .

Also any interviewees on friday are welcome to get a ride to JFK with me after the interview! haha

Depends on when you're driving. Traffic is pretty much always bad, but it gets terrible at rush hour.

Going to Hofstra in the morning, you should be alright. I've driven around 6, 7am, and it's fairly clear. Around 2:30 (if that's when you get out), it will be getting heavy, but true rush hour hasn't hit yet.. Are you coming from La Guardia or JFK? It sounds like (if you're taking Northern) you're coming from LGA. It's about 30-40 minutes without traffic. With traffic, probably an hour. With a lot of traffic, who knows?

What you have going for you is that you'll be driving against traffic. Never try to drive west in the morning or east in the afternoon/night, unless you like sitting in a parking lot on the highway.

Any home-grown LIers here? I'm from out of the area, so please chime in if you agree/disagree.

Thanks for the info.
I'm flying into jfk the night before and staying with a friend who lives in locust valley. I was thinking of leaving her house around 645/ do you think that is sufficient?! Luckily my flight home on Friday Is at 830pms so I think ill be able to make it to jfk 🙂

You should be fine - that's doubling the minimum time, so I would think you'd be alright. And going back you'll be fine, especially even if you don't wait until rush hour to leave for JFK. I always believe - better 3 hours in the airport terminal than 3 hours on the highway!

Do be aware that on the Meadowbrook, the exits come up very quickly, so don't be surprised and don't miss it. (I don't speak form experience... not at all). Driving on the island is not fun.

I may take you up on that offer. You should PM me.

Can anyone talk a bit about the curriculum here? I know students do EMT training right off the bat and that there is focus on the integration of basic science and clinical practice, but my question is: in what format is the basic science material taught? I seem to remember something about small group learning? But I can't find this info for some reason! Thanks!!! 😀

Do any current Hofstra students (or anyone, really) know anything about residency options for students at Hofstra? I would LOVE to be accepted here and I really love everything about this school, but I'm hesitant because it is so new.

I'm not a Hofstra student, but I recently interviewed here. I actually asked about residency options in my interview.

So, Hofstra's med school is a part of the North Shore-Long Island Jewish healthcare network. This is like the 3rd largest healthcare network in the U.S. (if I remember correctly). My interviewer indicated that Hofstra students will have a pretty good shot at doing a residency at one of the hospitals in the NS-LIJ network.

Overall, the school seems SUPER committed to making a name for itself. I have no doubt they will be well recognized in the medical community upon receiving board scores and graduating their first class. They have the most unique curriculum I have ever seen. Basically, there are a lot of short answer questions the students answer each week. Tests are short answer. There are essentially no formal lectures as the entire curriculum is based on group learning via discussion of case studies within each body system. There is also a lot of time for self-directed learning.

If any of this information is incorrect, please let me know Hofstra students!

I am at Hofstra for UG, but today there was a presentation by a member of the medical school faculty. The curriculum has no official lecture time, just group learning. There are 20 hours of faculty face-time every week, and students have to do fairly substantial prep work. I assume this is not unusual for most med schools.

There is also once a week, an afternoon with a GS, FP, OB, and two other general specialties, for two years, keeping the same doctor and switching off every week. You go to their practice/hospital.

There is EMT training, but I'm not sure how often they are required/choose to go. There is also something special with gross anatomy, but that didn't come up at this meeting. Ask about it when you interview. Also, apparently the sim center is sick.

Interviewed recently. Basically the main focus of the curriculum is the PEARLS cases which are worked on in groups and have all the basic science and clinical science learning objectives embedded in them. At least in the first two years, there are two of these per week plus one afternoon a week in "Structures" lab plus meeting with physician preceptors (each student gets five). Thursdays are off/time for students to catch up on material from the PEARLS cases that they didn't understand. There's a huge focus on students teaching each other. Also, the sim center is indeed awesome, although it's about 20 minutes away from the medical school.

Advice for future interviewees: The traffic is no joke. Although the GPS had my trip back to school at around two hours, it actually took over four, most of it spent sitting on the Islands (Long and Staten). Take the train if you can.

I just interviewed here today and I was thoroughly impressed. Their curriculum sounds awesome and everyone at the school seems in love with Hofstra. Here's hoping for an acceptance! PM me if you have questions about interview day.

Just interviewed and was very impressed with their facilities! Seems like they're spending a lot of money on their students!

The curriculum is really different too! PBL + clinical contexts for all basic sciences + no lectures + EMT training in first 9 weeks and a kind of clinical rotation for first and second years.

Luck all! Maybe I'll see you in July!

+1. I interviewed with you as well. I agree. awesome resources. VERY similar curriculum to Cleveland Clinic (which is <5 years old and has an awesome match list). Hofstra has so many resources and funding its crazy 🙂

Has anyone been rejected? My application has been complete for 2+ months and I haven't heard anything from them 😕

Been complete since 7/21 and have not heard anything. Anyone who was recently offered an interview remember what month they are up to? Since they seem to be on a quicker schedule than most schools, I would imagine that they are just about finished offering interviews.

I was complete mid september and am interviewing at the beginning of february.. There's still a few spots left I believe.

Interviewing this Friday- very excited!

About the traffic thing tho, if I leave the interview at 2:30pm, I should be able to make a 5pm flight from Newark right? I can't imagine its that bad...

I don't know (and don't want to scare you), but that is really close. It is about a 1 hour 10 minute drive, and if you hit traffic (it is rush hour), then you might be sol. I would say you should be there by 4:15, but that may or may not be enough time to get through security and check-in.

If you're lucky it will take 1h 30m with traffic (I think the quickest/ only(?) way is through the city. I would re-schedule if you can.

I'm a student there now. If you were flying out of JFK / LGA / ISP, you would make it no problem. It's gonna be close out of EWR. I would probably try to bump it back if it all possible.

Question about scholarships:

I am debating declining my interview and withdrawing my application because I got accepted to my state school, which I will almost certainly attend bc of cost. Thus, I don't want to take an interview spot from somebody else who wants to go there.

But before I decline, I was wondering if anybody knows anything about scholarships? I know the inaugural class got 20k a year, but what about the second class? Does hofstra have merit scholarships? I checked their website, but most of it was info for need-based fin aid. My stats aren't stellar, but if there is hope that I don't have to pay sticker price for hofstra, I would still like to learn more about this innovative new school.

Thanks!

At the interview day they said everyone in the class of 2016 would get some type of scholarship but it would be nowhere near the 20k the first class received. They really stressed this point and made sure we knew the scholarship would really not be anything substantial.
