I used AP Credit for Biology I course. I am pretty sure you can. I just put what it was processed through my institution. Hope this helps and I am not wrong. ahha!

Hey thanks for your reply. I called the office yesterday and they said we could use AP credit as long as our schools accepted our scores to fulfill their requirements.

Hey MWB,

In the first year at HU Med, my classes are broken up into five blocks over two semesters:

First semester (2.5 blocks) I'm taking Molecular Biology (Biochemistry), Cell Biology, Tissue Histology, Nutrition, Basic Microbiology, Genetics, Immunology, Clinical Skills, Health Care Systems, Gross Anatomy (I get my body In October :-D), and Structure & Function 1 (Bones, Muscles, Skin). <11 classes>

Second semester (2.5 blocks) gets easier because you have fewer classes. We're taking Structure and Function 2 (Head, Neck, nervous system), Structure and Function 3 (Thorax area - Cardiopulmonary systems, Abdomen, Pelvis), Gross Anatomy 2 and 3 (more with the same body :-D), Nutrition 2, and Global and Environmental Health. <5 classes>.

Wow, thanks for the comprehensive answer!!!! Amazing!

Btw, I love that they expose you to clinical skills and health care systems as an MS1! I feel like that really gives you an edge in the long run. 😍 cool curriculum.

Hello All! Im in my first year and LOVING Howard. Please let me know if I can be of any help to anyone. Good Luck applicants!😀

Hey supermomMD, congrats on making it to Howard. 😎

Question: if you're a mom like your sn says, how's that working out? In other words, what's life like balancing between med school and family? I plan on becoming like family with my classmates, hopefully. But at the same time I wonder how it changes one's existing relationships. Thanks!

Beeweew, Kaji, and others...feel free to chime in on the topic of balancing hucm with other activities such as family time.

Btw, good luck on your exams!!!

With much prayer and a good schedule I'm getting things done. (Not to mention my super great classmates and family are wonderfully supportive) If I have to study one weekend, I make it up to the family during the following weekend. All in all nothing is being neglected.

Hey everyone,

As a school that really stresses the importance of care in underserved areas, I was wondering if there are any opportunities to volunteer at a clinic or community health center. I really want to do that even as early as first year, but also throughout. Thanks guys!

There are alot of community clinics in the area (Unity, Mary's Center) I am pretty sure that you can use your first summer to do some volunteer work. Or if your feeling fancy 🙂 you can try to find something at Children's National Medical Center which is up the street from HUCM.

I have been looking at my personal statement for the past three weeks and I just cant seem to press the damn submit button. Something doesnt feel right about it. If I keep this up, I will be super duper late in my applications.
Is mid-September too late to apply?

Honestly, no matter how many times you keep looking at your personal statement you will always find ways to change it. However, that doesn't necessarily mean it will improve. I would get others to look at it for any critical feedback (flow, theme, etc) and then just submit it. While it is a big part of your application, it's not the only component. Let me know if you want me to read it...I won't mind and hope I can help. Also, I wouldn't say you're "late" but you are risking being at the bottom of the application stack, which we all know can get pretty tall. Not to be a bummer, but remember it also takes SEVERAL weeks to verify your app and even get it to the adcoms door! The later you submit, the longer verification takes. I'd estimate 5-6 weeks...confirm on SDN's verification thread. That doesn't TOTALLY suck because you can still start writing your secondaries and just submit them upon invitation (which for most schools is sent after they receive your verified app).

If you wanted to know if that's late for Howard, I'm not sure and can't comment on that. Sorry if I that wasn't your question! But I bet others (Kaji, DoctorDang, Beeweew, MissDeeDee, etc) can discuss when they submitted their primaries and whether that puts you at a disadvantage.

Submit soon and good luck!

I bet there are interest groups run by students that can direct you to shadowing opportunities. I'm excited though, I feel like shadowing/volunteering as a med student will be totally different haha because we'll be closer to the real deal. Maybe I'm hyping myself up too much...lol

The complete email suggested that interview invites start from September. Good luck to everyone!

I think you really do have to balance it out. Im from Philly, so every once in a while I like to drive back home (2.5 hrs away) and this takes away from my study time. Normally, what I do is study really hard during the beginning of the week so that I can go home with little worries at the end of the week.

you are definitely going to form a family bond with your classmates and our class. Its really a camaraderie here. I love the interaction amongst all of us 🙂. Me, Beeweew, and Dr Dang hang out all the time and as a class, we go out after each test (once every two weeks). If ppl are having a hard time, we make sure that we reach out to let them know that we are here for them.

there are students here that have their families in DC with them. Im not sure how they manage their time tho... SuperMomMD is REALLY super mom lol. she's amazing... she'll probably be the best person, that comes on SDN, to give you a clear perspective of it

There are plenty of opportunities to volunteer during your first year. you could get more clinical exposure by volunteering in the Freeman's clinic (free clinic started by one of the HU med students a few years back) and each of the student groups offer volunteer opportunities within various underserved areas in the DMV area.

Is mid-September too late to apply?

normally I would say no but I was talking to admission's about incoming applicants and possibly being a tour guide for the interviewees and Ms walk mentioned to a phone applicant, "if you're just submitting your AMCAS now then you're already late".... hit submit...

Shadowing in med school is great!!! Its actually apart of the second block curriculum and is called a Preceptorship. you get to do vital signs, patient history, and a case work up. the bad thing is that you are graded on your presentation (at the end)

SIDENOTE: I'm nervous that I'll mess something up and lose easy points lol (we start in October). you also get to choose your doctor and learn about a specialty that you are interested in.

That's awesome that you get hands on clinical experience really early. It sounds pretty challenging though, with only a couple months of med school under your belt. But I'm sure you'll do great Kaji!

I love Howard! This is how I envisioned the classes would be! Thanks for sharing Kaji! I pray I get an interview here and soon too!🙂
By God's grace, Howard will give us the opportunity we have all been praying for!

Aww Shucks! Thanks Kaji!!🙂🙂! If anyone has any questions feel free to shoot me a PM.

I sent mine in a while back as well but don't call in until it has been four weeks. I called them and the lady said "it hasn't been four weeks since August 15th which is when we sent out invites...be patient, we are working on it and will inform you of any updates via email" I knew that but my nerves got the better part of me. Good thing I didn't introduce myself..phew! 🙂

Just wanted to say hi to everyone. I am applying this year and Howard is my number 1 choice. Just in case anyone has not visited the school during the monthly admission office tour: YOU HAVE TO VISIT!! This school is a great environment not just because of academic excellence, but more so because of the committment to serving the underserved, the family-like environment, and so much more that should be discovered through a visit. Good luck to all of us and keep the faith!

No prob Bethvai 🙂.... I hope that you're interviewed here as well! You're going to love it here 😀 the camaraderie is amazing!!! And my class (co 2015) will make sure the you guys (co 2016) make the transition into Med School as smooth as possible. We really are a family here. That's really what convinced me to choose HUCM over my other choices and I hope that you feel the same way as well, when that day comes

Interviews are starting a couple of weeks and I just wanted to say good luck and God bless to everyone! It's a long process so If you arenot selected for an early interview please don't get discouraged. HUCMinterviews candidates until the end of April. I wasn't offered an interviewuntil the first week of January then I had to reschedule it until the firstweek of February and I was still able to get a seat.

I remember being anxious about the entire process but theone good advice that I was given when Christmas came and I didn't have anyAllopathic School interviews or acceptances was, "you only need one." 🙂remember that... In the end, I was accepted to two MD, two DO, and a CaribbeanMD (I had to cover all my bases lol).

👍 true, that's all that really matters. The amazing thing about HUCM is that even people who interview as late as March or April were offered acceptance! (according to last year's thread). This shows that they really go above and beyond in selecting great candidates for their school...we aren't just numbers to HUCM.

I'm really hoping HUCM shows me some love with an II soon...it would be an amazing blessing and that is what I prayed for after the noon prayers.

Im so mad I missed the September Information Session 🙁. For some stupid reason I thought it would be this Friday. I will be at the October one though...so hopefully I get to meet some of the c/o 2015 SDN peeps.👍👍

Congrats to those who got interview invites! Praying that the rest of us also get invites. And thank you Kaji for your encouraging words, that makes me feel a little less anxious lol

Hello! To those of you who received invites when was your secondary applicatiom complete? And congratulations!!!!

We'll be here 🙂 It seems like the SDNers are always in the building 🙂

DrDaz and docdonny congrats on the early invites 😀

Does anyone know the stats of those interview that eventually get accepted? 🙂 Just curious...

Does anyone know the stats of those interview that eventually get accepted? 🙂 Just curious...

5635 applied, 328 interviewed, 261 were accepted, 114 enrolled

So that's about 79 % acceptance of those interviews. That's pretty high compared to other schools which tend to accept 35-50 % of those they interview.

Hello! To those of you who received invites when was your secondary applicatiom complete? And congratulations!!!!

Hi 180019! My secondary was complete Aug 18th. Thanks for the kind words, hang in there you will get the good news soon enough!!

The email said to submit the secondary within 30 days of receiving it. Does it mean postmarked before the deadline, or when they actually receive and process it?

Thanks 🙂

I'd guess postmarked because that = submission commonly. :luck:

Thanks! I didn't get a complete email, but I mailed the secondary on Aug 13. Good luck!

Wow..congrats on the early invites and best wishes on the interview! Hopefully the adcom will extend some love to the rest of us who are anxiously waiting! 🙂
