I'm lucky to be accepted. I have EVERY reason in the world to attend Howard and I am very confident I can accomplish my academic and career goals after an MD from Howard, but the financial aid package isn't the best and money is huge for me. So there is a strong probability I will withdraw if I get into some of my other choices as they have better financial aid packages. So money is the deal here.

Congrats! And I definitely understand your situation. I was accepted here too and sent Howard my financial aid forms but I haven't gotten anything back as far as a financial aid package. I'm just curious as to how much HU will cost me. How long did it take Howard to send you a financial aid package after you sent out the forms?

I haven't sent out anything yet, so we'll see, but from my interview day it didn't seem as generous as other schools.

HUCM really rewards you if you have stellar numbers otherwise you can still save on tuition by doing great in your first yr of med school... During the interview they talked about the "board of trustees scholarship" which is an academic based scholarship and it rewards you quite nicely. Personally, I do not think that it gets any better than that. 🙂... If you decide to go somewhere else that's also fine. The objective is to go to the medical school that best fits you so that you can get the most out of it and become the best physician that you can be. I really hope that you are accepted to more schools than HUCM so that you will be able to make that decision... Hopefully HUCM will still be the best choice but if not I still wish you the very best 🙂.

Hey LB, Howard cost roughly $36K per year

Good afternoon everyone! 🙂 I just spoke with a nice lady from admissions. They said my application is still in the running. Alright guys, there's about 7000 applications and about 115 spots. I gotta request you all, please keep me in your prayers.God hears all our prayers. I mentioned this earlier, 😍😍😍I love you Lord😍😍 Dear God, provide us a way. You open doors that no man can close.

That's always a good thing. Have you sent something in to indicate your interest in the school and any possible updates highlighting recent activities?

Hi All,

I'm really excited and really really nervous about the interview :xf:. I got my invite on the 3rd and I almost cried. My application was complete in November and it took this long to finally get the okay, but I am not complaining! I really hope I get in. Is there any advice you guys can give about the interviews for those of you that have already had one??? Overpreparation may be my best bet.

Feb 28th here I come!! Interesting tidbit, my birthday is the 29th so provided I leave feeling positive, I will have a really nice birthday.

Congrats! And happy early birthday! 🙂 Let us know how your interview goes!

It's been 3 months since I interviewed and I was not forgotten... Howard has opened their doors for me and for that I am grateful. I have options and I have made my decision to attend Howard University. I can't wait to official join the family at Howard. The comments on this page is remarkable and very inspirational. To my future classmates accepted and waiting let's not forget are roots and the tribulations we have come from. To the 7000+ who applied to Howard University my heart and prayers go your way. To the spectators who are applying for the years to come, I must say an early application is THE application.

See you guys at orientation then MOLECULES AND CELLS!!!!

HUCM Class of 2016... We made it!!! (Actually not at all... as a matter of fact we have a long way to go )

Congratulations to the both of you.

Good luck on your interview. I would suggest the usual be yourself, they really don't try to stress you.

@lilcguy congratulations on your achievement your post keeps the fire of hope alive for the rest of us.

Hey everyone,

I've been keeping up with the thread for quite some time now. I remembering going through the process of applying, interviewing, and waiting last cycle. Its tough but worth it. HUCM interviewing season ends late in the cycle. A good majority of my classmates interviewed in April and were accepted, so there still plenty of time. Anyways, thats my 2 cents. Good Luck 🙂🙂

Hey Cmaster, hope you studies are going good. Thanks for your words. I hope that myself and many on the thread are accepted! Stay strong and keep the hope strong! 🙂

Hey sweetness34 I was wondering who you sent your update to? Was it Ms. Walk?

....tuition ~$38K + fees =$43K/yr. Expected total FA budget = ~67K-70K/yr range. Very pricy!

http://medicine.howard.edu/finance/costs.htm

tuition $36K (this yr), Fees definitely not $5,000 lol, and the Budget MAX is $66,500.00 (based off of actual numbers). you do not have to take out that much money, but they give you the option to take out that much if necessary. Most ppl I know do not max out but it's always good to have that option. DC is expensive but you could live in Maryland which is a whole lot less than the estimated cost of living (especially if you get a roommate or two). At least that's what I have done. Me and two other MS1's are roommates and its the perfect situation...

Kaji: I appreciate your response as an insider. I posted that in an attempt to be as realistic as possible. However, I would add that for all incoming students, tuition would be $38K/year per HU website and this is without including all the associated fees etc etc. The fact that tuition and fees increases each year, I think it's fair to estimate a yearly budget of $68-70K/year range or even more. Are there available scholarships? Wondering if you commute from Maryland everyday? Mind to share how (car, train, walking lol)? Personally, I would like to thank you and others for your contribution on this forum. This forum is one of a kind!

There are a lot of scholarships available (mainly in the range of $3,000-5,000) but there are a few coveted ones that are solely academic based and they range from $10,000 - $40,000. There are also need-based scholarships for those that are financially disadvantaged. Im not sure of the range but I was told that they are determined on a case by case basis.

The commute is not bad at all. It's roughly 20 minutes in the morning (with traffic) and 15 at night. I car pool and we all chip in for gas so the cost is really beneficial. The Metro (train) is approx 25-30 minutes but that's only because you have to switch trains midway through the trip. Otherwise it's more like 15-20 minutes. I'm not a fan of the metro solely because of the cost. I'm from Philly and public transportation is really cheap (approx 24/wk for an unlimited bus pass) but it cost nearly $35/wk (for only 10 trips!) to travel to and from school during "peak hours" (which is when I travel since I try to make the 8am class daily). Parking is also cool bcuz there are always free spots near school. the only problem is that they are 2 hr metered parking spots. The school offers you yearly parking for approx $250 (approx $6.25/wk) which is what I have. Its a great investment...

"Personally, I would like to thank you and others for your contribution on this forum. This forum is one of a kind" <-- No problem.

Hey everyone, I am still praying that I get an interview at Howard, Do you think an additional letter of recommendation from a physician that I am currently shadowing would help???

Thanks

If I was you, I'd send it in.

Ms. Walk is to whom it is directed to and you could also give the office a call 🙂
Happy Monday everyone. I sent an update to Ms. Walk a few weeks ago too. Did anyone who sent an update get a confirmation that it was received and added to their file? I'm afraid to call the office. I'm living by "no news is good news", but I'm definitely losing hope. I hope everyone else is doing better!

I sent it to her as well as cc'd the two people in the office. They sent me confirmation that it was received.

I sent in an update letter last month and waited a week and a half before calling the office since I hadn't received confirmation on whether the letter had been received. I spoke to Ms. Walk and as I was on the phone with her she went ahead and downloaded the letter. I would say that if it has been a while since you sent the letter and you still haven't received a confirmation, just go ahead to call. They're very friendly and nice; don't be afraid!

I think it may help, call the office just to confirm it. 🙂
